Man claims Subway baked knife into sandwich
uk.news.yahoo.com — A New York man claimed in a lawsuit filed on Wednesday that he found a knife with a 7-inch (18-cm) blade baked into the bread of his foot-long "Cold Cut Trio" Subway sandwich.

- checkacheck, on 07/18/2008, -14/+30maybe the knife would have added something to a Subway sandwich? A little plastic/metal to go with the usual cardboard flavour?
- chillypacman, on 07/19/2008, -6/+3'what's this hint of metal I'm tasting?'
- maximize, on 07/19/2008, -1/+51this is insane. i work at subway and the bread arrives in cardboard boxes as little breadsticks.
we then pan the bread so its soft. it comes from the freezer.
then someone makes four lines in it with a knife. how the ***** does a knife fit in the bread? it can't be a franchise employee. it must of been someone at the company who makes the breadsticks (unprepared).
after the four lines are made, they go into the baking center, then get pulled out and put in the sandwhich unit.
but still, how does a knife get frozen inside of a small breadstick. the guy panning it would make four lines and feel the metal while cutting. the person dressing the sub for the person would notice while cutting it to open the bread firstly, then while cutting it in half.

"I found this finger in my chili!"
"I'm going to sue you because that is so disgusting"
"Oops. I actually put that finger there. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding. Please don't arrest me for trying to cheat the system" - EvilFerret, on 07/19/2008, -0/+18I worked at Subway while I was going to school and max is correct. There's just no possible way this could have happened... Besides the fact that the un-proofed bread sticks are not large enough to hide a knife, when cutting the sandwich in half they would have discovered it. I can't think of any possible way something like this could be possible. Most likely the guy was unaware that although Subway "fresh bakes" their bread, the bread itself isn't made from scratch at Subway stores.
- linagee, on 07/19/2008, -1/+2Subway employees use a knife in the last step of making the sandwich when it's "folded" (especially if you ask for a lot of ingredients and they have to smash it closed).

- tidu, on 07/19/2008, -1/+1I'm surprised they didn't see the knife, I mean it's hard to miss considering they put .01 oz of meat on your sandwich.
- djholybolt, on 07/19/2008, -1/+1@linagee:
You're stupid. It is claimed to be *BAKED* into the bread, not rolled into the sandwich.
@tidu: I don't know about you, my sandwiches are filled with plenty of meat. I'd actually have subway instead of quiznos.

- An800lbGorilla, on 07/19/2008, -0/+0Maybe I'm missing something , but where does it say that the knife was baked into the bread? The article says, "he spotted the knife jutting out from the bread's crust," but that doesn't mean it arrived at subway that way. Couldn't the worker have prepared the sandwich, accidentally placed his knife in the sandwich, then wrapped it up? The knife could still poke through the bread.
- nomadxx7, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1Sort of true. But everytime I've gotten a sub (usually footlong) they cut it in half. I don't know how you could forget a knife when you have to use it to cut the sub in half. Or if he got a 6" sub, the article stated it was a 7" long blade. Still gives you 1" of a knife blade or handle sticking out one end or the other of a sub

- Spuy767, on 07/19/2008, -0/+7Did he sustain any injuries from this, if not, no lawsuit, unless you try to claim malice against the person who baked the bread. I don't think that this happened because every subway sandwich I have ever had the misfortune to consume has always been cut in half by the counter employee before it is bagged. I find it very unikely that a knife is going to be able to hide out in a subway loaf unnoticed.
- mattlohkamp, on 07/19/2008, -0/+4Yeah! Hey, you know, that's a fantastic point - a footlong is cut in half before being served, so how could he miss a seven inch knife? He obviously didn't think this through very well.
- FizixMan, on 07/19/2008, -0/+13I agree. 7 inches? This means he had to have purchased a foot long sub. But it also means he asked for it NOT to be cut. Otherwise when the employee cuts it (at the half-way 6 inch mark) he would have found the knife then before giving it to the man to eat.
- brogers810, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1I worked at subway for a little under a year and the dough for the bread is about 3/4 of an inch thick. An employee would have to have put it in there and when it was baked it would have stuck out a mile. Not to mention when you cut the bread open it would be pretty noticeable

- RuisuX, on 07/19/2008, -5/+0That's a good way to cut fat.
- Hellman109, on 07/19/2008, -2/+56Here in Australia atleast, the dough arrives at the store looking like a tall candle, that is thin long and round.
There is NO WAY a knife could fit into it.
If the knife was added when they went to bake it, it would be stuck to a side and fall off.
And then, when they are cut in half, unless the knife was cut in half it would be impossible to miss some metal thing in the way.
And when they cut the bread open it would also be noticable.
I say the guy put it in himself, to get money from subway.- cobykryp, on 07/19/2008, -0/+6agreed, had a few friends who worked at subway when we were younger and the bread comes frozen in boxes not much wider than a knife definatly something fishy
- Jeffool, on 07/19/2008, -1/+3Bread comes that way in the US as well, but theoretically someone could've put it in the loaf after it was in the proofer and re-sealed it cut in the bread. It's more likely that, if he's telling the truth, it was dropped in the sandwich while it was being was made. He said it was "jutting through the crust," but it's a knife. It cuts through bread. As to how it made it to that point, often times employees don't cut them in half perfectly, and sometimes customers don't want them cut in half. So, it's not impossible that it happened, it's just, like you pointed out, not very overly likely.
- EbenMarks, on 07/19/2008, -7/+0It was a foot long sandwich. That's 12 inches.
- Jeffool, on 07/19/2008, -0/+13Typically in Subways they cut the sandwich in half before giving it to the customers.
- pe5t1lence, on 07/19/2008, -0/+4Also, a six inch sub would be 6 inches, the nine foot sub is 108 inches.
- quidpro, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1The knife handle is melted in places, as though it went through the oven at some point. It had to be either intentionally placed in the dough, or the cust found a knife with a slightly melted handle and put it in the sandwich. The guy seems to be gay, and his lawyer seems to me to be a lesbian, (none of this was stated, but I'm basing this from what I saw on tv) and I wouldn't be surprised if there were some other details to the story...along the lines of some subway employee acting out against this guy for who he was.

- chrisinsocalif, on 07/19/2008, -0/+3I don't know how this can happen. The bread comes pre-made in a dough like state. All they do is put them in the oven to cook for a fresh out of the oven, baked taste. This mans claim doesn't seem plausible and probably out for money.
- AchaIemoipas, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1Who the hell sues for what might have happened anyway? (Canadian, so this is foreign to me).
This guy lost half a sandwich. He should get half a sandwich. I don't believe his story. It's impossible to make sandwich with a piece of bread that contains a knife that's longer than the piece of bread and not notice. - linagee, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1Subway slaves/employees use the knife in the last step when they "fold" the sandwich. - waydee, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2The real problem is not his nationality, it's more to do with the legal system in the US that even allows frivolous lawsuits like this to be filed with even a hope of success on the plaintiffs part, encouraged by previous wins in similarly dubious suits.
- AchaIemoipas, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2To an outside observer, suing for things that didn't even happen is a very American thing. I don't know of another country that would allow that, they'd allow you to sue, but in the US it's actually possible to win.
If the same happened in Canada, and I'd sue subway, the best I could get is the price of half a sandwich.

Toward the end of the registration process you asked me if I would like to invite contacts from my comtact list to become members of 'digg'. Which I said no by clicking on "do this later" (which was indeed the only option available to me). The next page informed me that digg has already done this... 'we have already sent an invite to your contacts'. That's a straight up intrusion and violation of my privacy'. Perhaps, just maybe, I don't happen to want all the contacts in my private contact list to be aware of everything I do and everything I join. But that is beyond the point. How dare you do that. Further, I would be prepared to put money on the fact that that email invitation that was forwarded to my contacts was worded as follows... "tony has invited you to join digg...", which is a falsity.
I am sick and tired of people thinking that just because they conduct business on the interent they are entitled to push manners and respect for others aside and wilfully violate other people's rights and what is essentially the law, at will. - GenericFoster, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1I have a food allergy for knives.
- grungegbunny, on 07/19/2008, -0/+6I'm skeptical of the claim of the knife in the bread just because of the fact that they cut the sandwiches in half. The article says the knife is 7 inches and half of a foot long sub is 6 inches. Hmm.
- ravensfh, on 07/19/2008, -1/+0wow, i hope subway counter sues him for a million
- yaryarhumphump, on 07/19/2008, -0/+3Bullspit... as people point out. (used to manage a Subway in college)
Subway cuts the sub in half. - obviously longer then 7 inches.
and to add to the detailed explanation, even after the bread has been proofed if someone put a knife in it the bread would collapse and be useless. There is no possible way a 7 inch knife was baked in to the bread accidentally or intentionally.
Just another American trying to abuse the legal system.- mrgreenjeans, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2Wouldn't the employee, who handles hundreds of loaves, notice that this particular loaf weighed ~10oz heavier?
- komarovsky, on 07/19/2008, -0/+0The AP version of the story says it was just the blade, not the whole knife. He says he had "severe stomach issues" for hours, which he attributes to food poisoning.
- lead2thehead, on 07/19/2008, -0/+0I've seen this scam a million times. The guy put it there himself so he could sue.
- matt1988, on 07/19/2008, -0/+0Someone I know actually works at a subway here, and ironically someone at her store did this around the beginning of the summer. The girl that did it didn't even get fired for it either but the store was getting sued over it. (Not subway corporate, just the store).
I saw this on on the news the other day and thought it could have been hers for a second then I realized it was in new york.
Anyway, I can vouch that it is possible because I know for a fact it has happened, I don't believe it is worth 1 million though :-/. - jotate, on 07/19/2008, -0/+5"You wanna know how I got these scars on my face?"
- edebolt, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2what a puss. He didn't bite into it but has to sue. whatever
