Washington D.C Now Has Citywide Surveillance Like London
abcnews.go.com — Three years after London's ubiquitous hidden cameras helped capture the July 7, 2005, London subway bombers, Washington, D.C., is modeling the United States' largest and most elaborately networked city surveillance system on that British network. In Washington, D.C., there are some 5,200 surveillance cameras trained on citizens, and more on the way

So much for the Comstitution.- NuclearDruid, on 07/07/2008, -3/+1They're doing it in the public, I don't see what's being broken here other than a "beef up in surveillance". The government can do whatever they want for their own streets, it would be violating the constitution if they were looking directly into somebody's home, or anything of that sort. Of course, that could be by-passed by another bill, but that constitution has been violated many times throughout our Nation's history that I think most politicians see it as a 'checkpoint'. Once whatever their agenda was is done, they simply restore to that checkpoint. (Happened for just about every war)
- strangerzero, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2At least they can shot the cameras with handguns now.
- lisaawesome, on 07/06/2008, -0/+7When I read ***** like this it makes me happy to be living in the boonies. I can just imagine the interesting footage a camera would pick up out here. Twenty four hours of footage would go something like "squirrel...squirrel...deer...fox...more deer...birds...squawking birds...squirrel..."
- whaught, on 07/06/2008, -1/+5I'm not even as concerned about the privacy issue as the incredible waste of money.

http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Benjamin_Franklin- Angostura, on 07/07/2008, -3/+2I take privacy pretty seriously, and I agree with the Franklin quote. But what essential liberty is being given up here? I don't think there is any practical expectation of privacy while walking in a public place in a city.
- sodade, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2I think there is a pretty big difference between a lack of privacy and a systematic program of surveillance by the authorities.
- Angostura, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1...so the essential liberty is....?

- Veriander, on 07/07/2008, -2/+7Reluctantly, I believe we will have to give up anonymity in public spaces (and the internet.) I don't like it, but it's unavoidable. Already businesses are forced to surveil all activity on their premises in order to avoid litigation. If somebody goes postal and the company could have prevented it, they're screwed.
Personally, I think it's our responsibility to protect ourselves. We should all have a gun strapped to our hips. After the first few million deaths the rest of us would rediscover courtesy and civility. I'd gladly accept the consequences of a gun-toting society than the inevitable Orwellian police state to come. - aflaks, on 07/07/2008, -0/+4How did these cameras help catch the 7/7 bombers again? Maybe they caught them on TAPE, but the bombers did what they wanted to with much success.
- sk11, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2It basically gives ignorant people a false sense of security. It's a lot easier to appease them this way than to actually tackle/prevent crime effectively. A bit like a placebo.
- AnotherDiggGuy, on 07/07/2008, -1/+1Maybe this is what an overflowing crime wasteland of a city like DC needs.
