The 25 Best Videogames of the Last 25 Years
ew.com — These are the "new classics" - GTA 4 makes the list!
- 1836 diggs
- digg it
- dbldn, on 07/03/2008, -1/+125Oooops. HALO: COMBAT EVOLVED was on the XBox originally, not the XBOX 360.
- Reap, on 07/05/2008, -24/+4Nope, origionally it was on the PC.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribes_2- Kosher1947, on 07/05/2008, -3/+6Nope. Originally it was on the Mac.
- Duncast, on 07/05/2008, -0/+11Nope originally on my abacus.
- Allender, on 07/05/2008, -0/+8Nope originally it was for YOUR MOM!!!!
- seabass341, on 07/05/2008, -2/+2wtf, tribes 2?
- panteradactyl, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1Marathon FTW
- applemachome, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2It was originally for mac, then microsoft bought bungie.
- moo2u2, on 07/05/2008, -14/+1should have put Halo 3, that was the best of the three + was on 360
- hmunkey, on 07/05/2008, -0/+9Maybe, but H1 was the original, and was the most creative one which jumpstarted a wave of space shooters.
- goonbaggins, on 07/05/2008, -1/+3Don't know what in the world makes you think that. As the graphics got better the gameplay got worse. I'd say gameplay is a bit more important.
- GoatMonkey2112, on 07/05/2008, -0/+9They also used Doom instead of Doom 2 or Doom 3. I think they were looking at the version that showed a somewhat groundbreaking concept instead of the the most polished version.
They've got most of the right games in the top 50. The order is all wrong though. I would put Starcraft and WoW much higher.
I guess you have to remember that this list is in Entertainment Weekly instead of a dedicated gaming site.- SolarUpNote, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1Found a "challenge" to that list where you can add your own:

- SolarUpNote, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1Found a "challenge" to that list where you can add your own:
- FuckXboxx, on 07/05/2008, -8/+1Wrong...it was originally on PC and Mac and then Microsoft stole it and put it on Xbox.
- enignock, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4Yeah, MS has nothing to do with PC's or Mac's for that matter.
- Reap, on 07/05/2008, -24/+4Nope, origionally it was on the PC.
- JMitch42, on 07/03/2008, -15/+228No Super Mario 64? Something's wrong here...
- AwesomeMonster, on 07/03/2008, -4/+12I think they tried to put what they thought was the best in certain series rather than the most groundbreaking. That's why they have galaxy instead.
- internetcoward, on 07/03/2008, -3/+30Wait what... they have 2 mario games on here already... and I think Mario 64 was better than Super Mario World.
- Zalyster, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1Actually 3...
- SolarUpNote, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1Found a "challenge" to that list where you can add your own:
http://digg.com/xbox/Challenge_to_EW_com_s_Top_25_ ...
- navster15, on 07/04/2008, -3/+23I agree. Super Mario Galaxy is great, but it was nowhere near as groundbreaking as Super Mario 64. For shame EW.
- ZenMojo, on 07/05/2008, -0/+8This list is booty. If you want to get testy, realize that 50-26 is kind of insulting.
http://www.ew.com/ew/gallery/0,,20209879,00.html
Really? Silent Hill 2 is at #44? fail.- jgtg32a, on 07/05/2008, -2/+1I agree it should be higher.
- ohmahgawd, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2SH2 should be at least in the top 25 for the masterpiece it is.
- Inflammo, on 07/05/2008, -2/+24Guitar Hero also ranks above Goldeneye. *****.
- Sornos, on 07/05/2008, -8/+1As it should. Guitar Hero invented a new genre. Goldeneye just polished what was already there.
- Seemefearme, on 07/05/2008, -0/+7Buried for thinking Guitar Hero invented anything 'new'.
- Jugador12, on 07/05/2008, -0/+5Sornos you fail, a new genre? There have been games such as DK Bongos, DDR, all of the singing games for ages...if anything Guitar Hero polished what was already there
- Sabin, on 07/05/2008, -1/+4No virtua fighter? How is it that Tekken and Soul Calibur made the top 50 but the game that created the genre (not to mention that VF5 is better than any Tekken game) didn't even make an appearance.
- ummagummas08, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1I feel like this is some kind of cheap marketing ploy to get the digg audience to buy video games for their kids, maybe I'm just being paranoid. What age group primarily uses digg anyways?
At any rate, this list is crap. - MrFisty, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1Not sure if some of these have just been added for "contemporary flavour". And you've also got to decide what constitutes 'best'. Is it best sales, best reviews or best innovation? This is just my opinion, but I thought Mario 64 was more important than Galaxy and that GTA3 or GTA:VC as being better than GTA4 in terms of really cementing and refining the sandbox platform. Jury's still out for me on whether I'd call Gears among the best 25 games of the last 25 years. Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed it, but it didn't really bring anything groundbreaking to the table. Same goes for Halo. Was pleased to see Shadow of the Colossus on the list, a great example of how you take a sword swinging action game and feel genuinely remorseful about killing the bad guys, all through music and next to no dialogue.
- Elranzer, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2True. This has got to be the worst "Best Of" lists for video games I've ever seen.
- MizFresh15, on 07/09/2008, -0/+0i agree where is the super mario 64. what is a best games list without it?
- AwesomeMonster, on 07/03/2008, -4/+12I think they tried to put what they thought was the best in certain series rather than the most groundbreaking. That's why they have galaxy instead.
- PacoDG, on 07/03/2008, -25/+87Tetris at number 1, as it should be.
Good list!- jimminy, on 07/05/2008, -1/+8Yeah, I was surprised to see Doom that "low" on the list but Tetris at top gave me a nice warm feeling.
- FishHammer, on 07/05/2008, -22/+2Thank you for spoiling the entire list in the 3rd comment there *****
- theshizzler, on 07/05/2008, -0/+7Perhaps you should read the article before reading what people are saying about said article.
- djholybolt, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1You're welcome, *****.
- BedPost, on 07/05/2008, -2/+7Uh, I'd contest that - while Tetris is of course a timeless classic, Ocarina of Time is THE timeless classic.
It just doesn't get any better.- Acglaphotis, on 07/05/2008, -2/+3Majora Mask, if it weren't for that damned timer everyone would have deemed it the best Zelda.
- WallyAnti, on 07/05/2008, -0/+7I'm just happy that Goldeneye is on there. That game is the reason I got addicted to multipayer FPS. Well that and some Jedi Knight concussion rifle action.
- Flashtone, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3Goldeneye ftw. was happy to see it also.
- psykiv, on 07/05/2008, -2/+2I was going to bury it when I saw Starcraft at number 21, and Ocarina at 2, but now dugg it because tetris is at #1. Tetris is a perfect game.
- eliot2000, on 07/05/2008, -1/+5Tetris is always forgotten on these lists. Almost every person who has played Tetris has been addicted to it for a while. I know people that have never played a game before or since who gave themselves Nintendo plus-shaped thumb blisters with the game.
- iMoth, on 07/05/2008, -6/+1*****.
- Sirlolalot, on 07/05/2008, -4/+1FFS, thanks for the spoiler! :(
- erasermcfleafly, on 07/05/2008, -1/+2tetris is ***** gay as *****!!! the dude probably thought up the whole thing in like 20 seconds.
- samwproc, on 07/03/2008, -15/+183No Portal? Although Tetris at number 1 is good.
- dstz, on 07/05/2008, -18/+4Only got Portal a few days ago. The game isn't bad, but it's just an extremely short puzzle with the HL2 engine, nothing amazing. If compared with great games that went on sale at about the same time, like Stalker or The Witcher, Portal ain't in the same ballpark, at all.
- noumuon, on 07/05/2008, -1/+3stalker was horrible.
- 42Vindictive, on 07/05/2008, -2/+6Yes, because a brand new, conceptual game that breaks the boundaries of physics and game engines as we know it and compacts it into a small, cheap, intricate, descriptive and amazing package is obviously not in the same league as GENERIC RPG 1.2
- Elranzer, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Actually... Generic RPG VII.
- wilkinnh, on 07/05/2008, -6/+1there is no cake.
- phorty40, on 07/05/2008, -4/+12tetris at number one is a copout , i mean come on , its just to appease us gaming fanatics.
and seriously guitar hero better than final fantasy 7? no , no ,no because let us all remember one fact
final fantasy never had an 80's edition nor an Aerosmith one
and Guitar Hero did.
Game.Set.Match.- AbsurdParadox, on 07/05/2008, -0/+7*Insert Final Fantasy victory music here*

- Bologner, on 07/05/2008, -1/+1@ phorty
3 Words: Dirge of Cerberus.
- AwesomeMonster, on 07/03/2008, -16/+252good list.... terribly organized. Also... wtf is guitar hero doing on this list?
- PacoDG, on 07/03/2008, -2/+9I personally would have chose Rock Band over Guitar Hero, but one can't deny the effect Guitar Hero has had on gaming right now, getting both those "casual" gamers and the "hardcore"... it is like DDR, but good.
- CoreyHalliwell, on 07/05/2008, -15/+4Here's an idea buy REAL instruments and make a REAL band...
- s3rgi0, on 07/05/2008, -2/+9Why? Those require huge time investments, which people don't always want to make. Guitar Hero lets people have fun easily. Isn't that the point of video games?
- Disease, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3Please not this again.
- Nath2k8, on 07/05/2008, -0/+13Yeah and why not join the army instead of playing COD4??
- Kanten, on 07/05/2008, -4/+3"one can't deny the effect Guitar Hero has had on gaming right now, getting both those "casual" gamers and the "hardcore""
Actually I think the Wii did more of that. - chaosblade77, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2Hardcore gamers on Wii? Beyond maybe four first party releases (Twilight Princess (even though it was a GCN port), Metroid Prime 3, Galaxy, and Smash Bros), I'd say hardcore gamers are avoiding it until some better games arrive.
Guitar Hero did a much better job of it than the Wii has, at least so far. - Coffeedemon, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2"Actually I think the Wii did more of that."
There were people playing Guitar Hero who hadn't played a videogame in years long before the Wii sold its first unit.
- KyjL, on 07/05/2008, -4/+15It's insanely popular and it's a music game that doesn't have the prerequesite of being a japanophile to enjoy it. Regular people can pick up and play it without fear of looking like an ADD-afflicted retard.
- lamiaconfitor, on 07/05/2008, -8/+4Seriously, DDR is the actual groundbreaking rhythm based game. Guitar hero/Rock band appeal to lazy, vain people who want to pretend they are Rock Stars.
- SilentSlayer97, on 07/05/2008, -4/+4I don't mind guitar hero being on the list, but #5, pfft.
- chaosblade77, on 07/05/2008, -1/+4I actually only agree with about half of that list. I don't see how a lot of those titles are better than Super Metroid or Chrono Trigger.
No way does GTA IV deserve to be in the top 10 either... - AnOMNOMymous, on 07/05/2008, -1/+1No kidding. I buried this article. Guitar hero doesn't even belong in the top 50.
- PacoDG, on 07/03/2008, -2/+9I personally would have chose Rock Band over Guitar Hero, but one can't deny the effect Guitar Hero has had on gaming right now, getting both those "casual" gamers and the "hardcore"... it is like DDR, but good.
- richman241, on 07/03/2008, -17/+131Guitar Hero? Ya that game was good, but it certainly wasn't better than FFVII....
- Ezxen, on 07/05/2008, -10/+2not that im not saying ff7 was not a good game but you ff fanboy's/girls over hype that game to the paint that the mire mention of 7 sends me into a rage, but i guess ff7 is to FF fans as OoT is to us Zelda fans .By the way OoT so kicked FF7 ass on that list .
also Gh was new and innovative- 42Vindictive, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4*cough* Dance dance revolution
- dungbeetle, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1Except large guys like me can actually play it. I could never get into DDR.
- Striss, on 07/03/2008, -15/+132Strange list...Mario Galaxy and Guitar Hero? Hardly the best games in the last 25 years...
Where the heck is TIE Fighter for PC?- Frozenfuryblade, on 07/04/2008, -5/+21Game reviewers beg to differ.
Mario Galaxy was at a time the best reviewed game ever.- Kanten, on 07/05/2008, -2/+13Reviewers are INCREDIBLY reliable resources. Just ask Jeff Gerstmann.
- jgtg32a, on 07/05/2008, -2/+8Didn't they say Halo 3 was the second coming of Christ also?
- Greg535, on 07/05/2008, -1/+0Actually they said it was the third coming.
- Elranzer, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1I think after all of the reviews poured in, Ocarina of Time still rates higher than Super Mario Galaxy.
- sugarazor, on 07/05/2008, -9/+6Guitar Hero has completely changed the gaming landscape, it not being on here would be ridiculous.
- welliwonder, on 07/05/2008, -1/+11amen tie fighter was so fun
- ferrariman60, on 07/05/2008, -1/+5It's in spot 36. I'm actually serious here. Here's the list from 50-26:
http://www.ew.com/ew/gallery/0,,20209879,00.html
And here's TIE Fighter:
http://www.ew.com/ew/gallery/0,,20209879_14,00.htm ... - PurgueFlantar, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3Of all the hundreds of games I've played throughout the years (I'm old) Tie Fighter for me holds the dearest spot in my heart. And all the time I played it I had the WORST time keeping my joystick calibrated... anyone else had that?
- Frozenfuryblade, on 07/04/2008, -5/+21Game reviewers beg to differ.
- acero47, on 07/03/2008, -18/+11A lot of strange choices, and the order was a bit odd. My personal list would have a lot more RPGs on it (and no Halo), but to each his own.
- thebuggalo, on 07/05/2008, -6/+16i'm sorry, but this wasn't titled "Acero47's Top 25 Best Videogames".
Just because you personally don't like Halo doesn't mean you can deny the popularity of the game. It's one of the biggest new video game franchises out there. - ace429k, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1Halo wasnt bad. shoot it had me after i threw my first sticky onto someones ass. he looked like a bunny!
- thebuggalo, on 07/05/2008, -6/+16i'm sorry, but this wasn't titled "Acero47's Top 25 Best Videogames".
- Intensity, on 07/03/2008, -4/+77Deus ex, Starcraft, Half-Life, Chrono Trigger, Goldeneye, Ocarina of time, and Tetris deserve to be on the list, the rest I don't really care about either way.
- lennybird, on 07/05/2008, -7/+14I'm a Half-Life fan at heart, but you have to admit - Halo deserves to be on that list (only CE).
- Alex74447, on 07/05/2008, -4/+5What, no Doom?
- Dhalamar, on 07/05/2008, -9/+3Did you even read through it all? Doom is #3. Not surprisingly beating out Halo.
Give me Goldeneye and Doom over Halo anytime. Just never could get into Halo. - NotOptium, on 07/05/2008, -1/+2I think he was pointing out that it was strange that Intensity didn't put Doom on his list.
- Dhalamar, on 07/05/2008, -9/+3Did you even read through it all? Doom is #3. Not surprisingly beating out Halo.
- slightlygifted, on 07/05/2008, -9/+1half life is not that fun. yes no one ever says it but its just not. hours of creeping around corners throwing saw blades at crab head guys with the grav gun. its just a dark, long, and annoying game. especially the vehicles, worst vehicles ive ever seen in a game. half life may have started the fps stories or whatever, but halo did it in an awesome and fun way.
- potofgravy, on 07/05/2008, -1/+1Yes, I do enjoy spending 20 hours just to turn around.
And don't give me that PC port crap, the only port to out crap the Halo port was the Halo 2 port. The crosshair wasn't even in the centre of the screen. - pikelet, on 07/05/2008, -0/+7That gave me the best laugh I've had in weeks, cheers mate!
Wait.
You're serious :| - alexforcefive, on 07/05/2008, -0/+13Methinks someone got stuck in ravenholm....
- ThickGreenPuke, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4We don't go to Ravenholm
- 42Vindictive, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1If anyone happened to notice, he mentioned Half-Life 1, not Half-Life 2. You ***** youngins.
- FLarsen, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1@42Vindictive: Can you tell me where in Half-Life 1 you throw saw blades with the gravity gun?
Didn't think so. Read before you post.
- potofgravy, on 07/05/2008, -1/+1Yes, I do enjoy spending 20 hours just to turn around.
- Ayavaron, on 07/05/2008, -7/+4Out of curiosity, have you played Goldeneye lately? It's really suffered in the test of time. The FPS genre really took leaps forward and Goldeneye isn't very good in comparion. It's barely even average.
- Lith25, on 07/05/2008, -0/+5Yes I have played goldeneye lately and it's still pretty fun. Sure, the controls are a little hard to get used to after not picking up an N64 for years, but it deserves to be on the list.
- ThickGreenPuke, on 07/05/2008, -1/+7I think Half-life 2 deserved to be on there. A FPS getting everything right!
- homercles337, on 07/05/2008, -0/+10Not to mention that HL ranked lower than Halo? That was the WTF moment for me.
- jparkinson, on 07/05/2008, -1/+3Half life should definitely be higher than halo and every other shooter on there except Doom.
Other then that I don't have that many problems with this list.. - Tanath, on 07/06/2008, -1/+2Just because GoldenEye was more popular (due to the Bond franchise) does not make it better than Perfect Dark, which was a big improvement. PD should replace GE on such lists.
- Dhalamar, on 07/06/2008, -1/+1Perfect Dark was (and still is) awesome, it's just a pain to play multiplayer because of all the slowdown. Goldeneye wasn't awesome to me because of the Bond franchise, it's just an awesome game. Doesn't need the memory addon to be played fully, doesn't slow down to a crawl multiplayer and is insanely fun to play.
Saying that, I still play both Goldeneye and Perfect Dark to this day all the time. When one of my friends gets done stomping my ass in Halo on the very rare times I actually decide to play it, we play Goldeneye and I'll drive her nuts punching her to death. :P And pretty much the same thing with Perfect Dark. I wouldn't give up my N64 for the world.
- yargthepirate, on 07/03/2008, -6/+139Starcraft is 21? WTF?
- MattSFJ2, on 07/04/2008, -6/+55This is the US list, not Korean list...
- Pake, on 07/05/2008, -2/+15Even then, it should be in the top 10 easily, if not top 5.
- darkened, on 07/05/2008, -2/+12I said the same WTF, 2nd WTF chronotrigger LOWER than FF7? no way, buried as inaccurate.
- shawnanigans, on 07/05/2008, -0/+26I believe this magazine just declared war with Korea.
- mustang460, on 07/05/2008, -1/+21yea and no diablo
also WoW should be on there, whether you like the game or not, ~10,000,000 subscribers
I'd say a "few" people would call it a new classic
blizzardism at its best next we'll see flaming snowflakes at blizzard HQ's lawn- jimjchou, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3WoW is on there. It's in spot 49. Here it is:
http://www.ew.com/ew/gallery/0,,20209879_1,00.html
- jimjchou, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3WoW is on there. It's in spot 49. Here it is:
- SolarUpNote, on 07/05/2008, -1/+1Found a "challenge" to that list where you can add your own:
http://digg.com/xbox/Challenge_to_EW_com_s_Top_25_ ... - dukeochutney, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1half life at 18 is bollocks. considering it was a revolutionary masterpiece of an fps. and started the entire mod community for fps. but i guess that doesnt matter. buried for that *****
- MattSFJ2, on 07/04/2008, -6/+55This is the US list, not Korean list...
- thefangedrabbit, on 07/03/2008, -19/+47I like how they say that FFVII is unfairly criticized. They don't realize that that's far from the truth, and if anything it's overrated.
- ZenMojo, on 07/05/2008, -3/+3As proven by this list. When he says the game is "more than the sum of its parts" he means, "It's the sum of its parts PLUS the undue hype I am going to give it right now."
- Chadbr0chill17, on 07/05/2008, -8/+11ooo yeah, let's all jump on the "Final Fantasy VII is overrated" bandwagon. It's the cool thing to do on the internet!
- arobicha, on 07/05/2008, -3/+12Awe don't ***** yourself. It was a good game, and you played it to the end like everybody else did. There were 10+ games on that list however that you wouldn't catch me finishing unless I had a gun to my head.
- bakatrinh, on 07/05/2008, -8/+10FFVII is not overrated.
- WallyAnti, on 07/05/2008, -3/+3I think you have to have a lot of patience to play FFVII. The gameplay experience was very very redundant to me, and I figured if I wanted to read a story I'd just pick up a book and use my imagination. The graphics are better.
- Shogi, on 07/05/2008, -1/+2Even if you want to argue that the game was not that great, the fact that is is so famous and loved makes it one of the best.
- kestrel7e7, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1*****
- SnakeLemma, on 07/05/2008, -0/+0wouldnt saying that its overrated be a form of criticism? just throwin it out there...
- arobicha, on 07/05/2008, -1/+0Yes it is, but it is also unfounded without evidence to support it. He could have said that the game was slow because of the summons, or that the story was poorly written, or that the graphics (when compared with some of the other games on PS1) have aged horribly, or that the characters were difficult to relate to... but of course all of those things are moot points, because the game was still great.
- Seemefearme, on 07/05/2008, -2/+2FFVII was alright. I caught onto Final Fantasy right after VIII was released, so VII was actually my 2nd Final Fantasy and I thought compared to the next 3 (8,9 and 10) that it was alright. I've read into a bit and VII was a lot of peoples first Final Fantasy because it was the first in 3d. I think no matter what personal opinion someone offers, those who played it before 8 9 or 10 will disagree. I personally enjoyed them all and couldn't pick a single one to play above the others.
- TheDeepFriar, on 07/03/2008, -0/+96....because this story wouldn't have gotten diggs unless "GTA 4" was in the description.........
- Ajajadude, on 07/05/2008, -2/+14I didn't think GTA IV was as great as I thought it would be. I still like Vice City over the past few versions.

- Disease, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1Dark-skinned gentlemen.
- kinseyincanada, on 07/05/2008, -0/+5Vice city had a way better feel, and vibe to it. It truly made you feel like a gangster rising to glory.
- Ajajadude, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1The overall feel to the VC was better than San Andreas and the rest of them, in my opinion. I didn't get very far into GTA IV before I sold it...I just couldn't get into the game. It wasn't a bad game, I just couldn't a feel for the game. I had a much easier time getting into the character of a gangster than a gangsta or a cliche of an immigrant that has a dark and mysterious past.
That and Rockstar has made it too damned hard to go on a killing spree when you get bored with following the plot. You can't kill one person in IV without having the cops get all over you. That and I miss buying up the city.
- RusskiGuy, on 07/05/2008, -0/+7Agree with above, except I prefer San Andreas. GTA 4 was good for storytelling, but it failed at the end horribly, when the player finds himself done with the storyline and able to do missions for $ while having nothing to spend it on. No city control, no rising up through the ranks, and so on. I found myself only playing through it once and putting away.
- Niubai, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2I really think they should have gone with GTA3 on the list. GTA3 was the innovative start of all.

- PURPLEDRINK, on 07/05/2008, -10/+4res evil 4 sucked. oh man...
Capcom came up with the brilliant idea of taking survival + horror and replacing it with adventure and action, then re-using the same platforming engine from the psx for something that played much more like a fps, just without the fps.
The whole point of RE was the exact genre it seems to have created and killed: survival + horror. In Resident evil 4, ammo was never a problem. the story was utter *****, so it was very hard to understand why any idiot would want roam around a spanish castle full of zombies wearing knight armor. wow... just wow, what a bad game. Semi-good list though.- Kanten, on 07/05/2008, -2/+2Dugg for someone who actually understands.
- Darkangel754, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2I agree with a lot of the stuff you said but it was still a very good game, just not a survival horror game.

Three of the biggest franchises of all time (GTA, Guitar Hero, Halo) and none of them deserve to be in a top 10? You're right, it's not a real video game unless it's some kind of foreign made RPG. You're buried for being lame.

- Prathik89, on 07/04/2008, -3/+53In my opinion KOTOR should be there. But seriously, why does everyone love GTA IV? I finished it twice, yet it left me feeling cold. I thought there was something wrong with me, but seriously, the games very short and has almost re-playability ( I played it through twice just to see so) they barely added anything new to the series except physics, and the "moral decisions" thing.
- mugicha, on 07/05/2008, -7/+3Why would you play through a game twice that you didn't like the first time? Go read a book or something.

- opmike, on 07/05/2008, -1/+5How can you possibly have this stance as a video gamer? That's like saying, "Well, instead of staying inside playing Gran Turismo on your little plastic wheel, you might as well go out and actually learn to drive on a track." It's a game, of course it's a waste of time. This whole mentality of 'I don't like it so it's stupid' is really childish.

What are you talking about? Anyone with some basic instruction can "play" a guitar and anyone with some basic instruction can "drive" a car. The difference is, not everyone is going to be a Hendrix or Senna. CoreyHalliwell, you are a ***** insane crackhead if you actually believe that. So with that said, don't lay your mundane intellectual inadequacies and generalizations of late 80's moms on the gaming community and then actually mention halo like you knew what you were talking about.

- hinmanj, on 07/05/2008, -5/+34Why was gears of war on here? I mean... It's good, but it didn't change the face of gaming like Doom or Starcraft, and by no means revolutionary. - AriaGloris, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3They should both be on the list.
- 42Vindictive, on 07/05/2008, -2/+2I loved Bioshock, hated System Shock.
- Reap, on 07/05/2008, -3/+3bioshock? What about it? It wasn't BAD, I suppose, but certainly not top-25 material.
- btschul, on 07/05/2008, -2/+8The atmosphere, the music, the story, the *spoiler* totally unexpected plot twist (atlas has been controlling you the entire time with a code phrase, making this the first game I know of to use the linear you have to complete this objective to progress game style as a major plot point), the integration of an entire philosophical school of thought into a game (objectivism), the characters, the weapons, the moral choice system, the big daddies, the setting, the voice work. That's what made it top 25 material.
- laconix, on 07/05/2008, -4/+1Oh man that plot twist sounds totally lame, just like the game...
To be completely honest though; the game was scary, though it got boring and I did not finish it.
- kineticarl, on 07/05/2008, -1/+3They made the bottom half of the top 50 (except for portal for whatever reason).
- KyjL, on 07/05/2008, -3/+6Don't you mean System Shock 2 instead of Bioshock?
- welliwonder, on 07/05/2008, -7/+1Jesus Christ crucified on a lollipop stick, I'm sure this list is ***** but... PUT IT ALL ON ONE PAGE ASSHOLES!
- ZenMojo, on 07/05/2008, -1/+9"Go ahead, hate us — FFIII is No. 29, if you're looking — but FFVII is far more than the sum of its (unfairly criticized) parts."
Done. Because it sure as hell ain't better than the sum of FFIII's parts. But what do you expect from Entertainment Weekly? The writer probably asked his 12 year old what games should be on the list.- PrometheusZero, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1Both games are fantastic, and largely go off nostalgia at this point more than anything, but I reckon FFVII just had more of that impact on gaming as a whole than VI did, despite how much you enjoyed VI over VII.
- sugarazor, on 07/05/2008, -1/+6I kinda have to laugh at the notion of "new classics" when console gaming has only been around for about 25 years. Of course there were video games before that, but these games on this list are all from the NES era and beyond, when gaming really started to become mainstream. Couldn't this list just be "The 25 Best Video Games?"
- superoven, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1exactly what I was thinking, this list is highly flawed anyway
- theragu40, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1It could be, but then it would be an even bigger failure.
- CoreyHalliwell, on 07/05/2008, -5/+67How in the sweet ***** did Halo get placed higher than Half-Life? These internet lists are all so ***** abritrary...
- ndnspongebob, on 07/05/2008, -1/+4and how did it get placed right above chrono trigger. halo is no where close to chrono trigger.
- Snoz, on 07/05/2008, -2/+8Half-life kicks the ***** out of Halo. Even Half-Life 2 with episodes 1 and 2 beats every Halo game.
- Zurahn, on 07/05/2008, -0/+8I don't like to argue with these lists since there's so many ways to look at it, but uh... Super Mario Bros. on the NES?
- Tyrghast, on 07/05/2008, -2/+325 games? They aren't really restraining themselves very much, huh...
