Xbox 360 DivX/XviD Playback Test (Verdict: Almost Perfect)
gizmodo.com — The Xbox 360 supports DivX and XviD as of today, which may make some of you with big file collections (like us) as giddy as a kid in store with puppies made of candy. We threw our entire collection of movies, TV shows and random clips at it and found that the 360 can play back pretty much anything. Here are some notes.
- 2527 diggs
- digg it
- Beesoc, on 12/04/2007, -10/+194This is great news. Divx was what I was waiting for to buy an XBox 360. I just ordered an Xbox and Mass Effect!
- ncr100, on 12/04/2007, -5/+36Mass Effect is fabulous. All its visual glitches are completely forgiven by me because of how good a game it is.
- Kurisuku, on 12/04/2007, -46/+8I disagree. It's a generic run-n-gun 3rd person shooter with poor graphics, generic if not drawn out boring gameplay, and a storyline that revolves around a choppily animated lesbian sex scene -- The game's *only* sellling point. Oh yeah, and the gameplay is still boring and drawn out vanilla bland with a very poorly adjusted stat system thrown in for bloat.
- Kurisuku, on 12/04/2007, -16/+7Wow, apparently digg will buy any terrible crap shoved down their throat just because of hype.
- popfrogs, on 12/04/2007, -15/+2Note to self: don't ***** with X360 fanboys.
- Hawkeye05, on 12/05/2007, -6/+3Kurisuku, I totally agree with you although you were kinda trolly, I am a X360 Fanboy, but I hate Mass Effect With a Passion as well.
- BRODEL, on 12/06/2007, -0/+2Nope, you're not alone... Mass Effect either takes way too long to get started or it's just boring through and through. I gave up on it. Glad I was just borrowing a friends copy. No need to aim, just make sure the enemy is within the gigantic aiming circle and they'll die. Oh, then watch an interactive movie or the next 10 minutes.. whatever. I went back and finished off Assassin's creed which despite it's faults of being repetitive is a much more enjoyable experience than Mass effect was. If it gets better someone tell me because I got bored with it so fast I just gave it back to my friend.
- incubusnb, on 12/05/2007, -1/+4so what your saying is that you havn't played it.
Yes, its a very much a 3rd person shooter, but the "poorly adjusted stat system" as you refered to it does an excellent job of ensuring you can't hit anything at the beginning, but your a perfect shot near the end regardless of how good you actually are at "run-n-gun" gameplay. The graphics aren't fantastic, but I've had a number of wow moments through my journeys. The generic gameplay really isn't generic at all, the main storyline is really polished and has the epic feel i've been looking for in a good game and the side quests usually have a good little plot themselves, sometimes directly influencing the development of your charactor and/or the main questline, the game still feels new to me, even after 2 playthroughs. As for your "storyline that revolves around a choppily animated lesbian sex scene", it really, really doesn't, the storyline is very unique and is nowhere near your typical Sci-fi storylines, it has a route all its own and the backstory in the codex is immense and interesting, I spend a good 2 hours last night just reading and listening through the files.
sure, its not perfect, but really, what is?
- Kurisuku, on 12/04/2007, -16/+7Wow, apparently digg will buy any terrible crap shoved down their throat just because of hype.
- MiDri, on 12/04/2007, -1/+17I've played mass effect through almost 4 times now, will do a 5th before I take a break -- it is a great freaking game... the texture pop is kind of stupid though, hopefully they release a patch to fix the LOD.
Note however, on Noveria (really anywhere you fight biotics) SAVE A LOT the physics have a habit of getting you stuck in places you character can not get out of -- and you can not use any buttons other then dashboard when it happens...- louiedog, on 12/04/2007, -0/+5Seriously? I hope you aren't doing every side mission every time. I'm on hour 26 right now of my first play and I still have quite a bit of game left.
I didn't have that problem on Noveria.- dclowd9901, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2I had issues with my squad mates getting stuck places. The elevators usually relink everyone, but if you head into battle with your two squad mates 4 rooms away, you're pretty much asking for a death sentence.
- louiedog, on 12/04/2007, -0/+5Seriously? I hope you aren't doing every side mission every time. I'm on hour 26 right now of my first play and I still have quite a bit of game left.

- DBNKR, on 12/04/2007, -2/+3I bet we can make more out of this than what we think of right now. I for one have a Linux box with all my media on. I want to access that one with my 360.
- MiDri, on 12/04/2007, -2/+3I built a Ubuntu Server to serve as a media hub for my network, works great! Apache/uShare/Samba/openSSH -- I can access my media from anywhere!
- BearinG, on 12/07/2007, -0/+1I just put TVersity and everything worked great.. couldn't even get the damn Media Sharing to work through WMP11.. and it used to work fine with just Media Connect..
- dukeochutney, on 12/04/2007, -20/+1all 9 hours of it....
- louiedog, on 12/04/2007, -0/+16I'm on hour 26. What are you talking about?
- dclowd9901, on 12/04/2007, -0/+6I'm on hour 9, and I haven't even begun to complete the major plot. There's just too much to do!
- BearinG, on 12/07/2007, -0/+1I'm playing for more than 12 hours and have just started visiting planets.. barely scratched the main mission
- louiedog, on 12/04/2007, -0/+16I'm on hour 26. What are you talking about?
- Hoov, on 12/04/2007, -10/+4Ehhh, definitely a good game but the glitches and uninspired planets dragged it down terribly. Needed extra time for polish. Still, can't beat the storytelling and visuals - feels like you're playing a movie.
Anyway, yes of course now I need to start downloading DivX movies. Hooray for no more converting file formats! - MxM111, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3Question, can you stream mp3s and listen to internet stations and podcasts? If yes, I am buying it tomorrow...
- MiDri, on 12/04/2007, -0/+8Stream mp3s = YES
Podcasts (if they are in a supported format that WMP recognizes) = YES, otherwise there are a lot of trans coding options available as well. - salmonmoose, on 12/04/2007, -0/+6Yes and yes.
Although I don't think WMP supports podcasts as data source (it'll just play the file) - however Zune media player does.
- MiDri, on 12/04/2007, -0/+8Stream mp3s = YES
- Twoodge, on 12/04/2007, -1/+2One thing I have noticed is that my juicy HD Planet Earth seems to stream at a lower res than the original as if it was in TVersity. When my Xbox is on the 'native' setting it's way smaller than 1280x720. Just wondering if anyone else had this problem.
- superjohnyo, on 12/04/2007, -1/+10make sure you go into the options, then the transcoder section, and change the max resolution.
- moush, on 12/05/2007, -1/+1you waited til now to get a 360? since i guess it's impossible to watch movies any other way on your tv?
- ncr100, on 12/04/2007, -5/+36Mass Effect is fabulous. All its visual glitches are completely forgiven by me because of how good a game it is.
- mikesly, on 12/04/2007, -4/+207At least Microsoft is listening to us
- saleem, on 12/04/2007, -17/+11"It just works."
- dukeochutney, on 12/04/2007, -24/+6the funny thing is that it doesn't. only works when not using WMC.
- BearinG, on 12/07/2007, -0/+1Actually, no.
- dukeochutney, on 12/04/2007, -24/+6the funny thing is that it doesn't. only works when not using WMC.
- TheRedNewt, on 12/04/2007, -1/+38Microsoft seems to have adopted more of a "what the customer wants" mentality lately than in the past, which can only be good for us consumers. I have a few movies in XviD that I was almost to the point of transcoding for the 360, but now I have no need.
- RiverBelow, on 12/04/2007, -16/+5No, they definitely haven't. It's been two years and the #1 most wanted feature is STILL GROUP ***** CHAT. Yet, here we are, group chatless, but with that oh-so-astounding Friends of Friends! Oh my Gawd! You got your Facebook, on my Xbox Live! Guess what, don't give a *****!
Now I have to wait until spring for group ***** chat.- Shaflugi, on 12/04/2007, -1/+5Be happy that it's better than what us Wii owners have to deal with :).
Our "Sorry we didn't make the brawl release date" update on smash dojo was "yay, brawl uses its own friendcode instead of the global wii code". - itsthebrod, on 12/05/2007, -3/+5Who the ***** cares about group chat? A bunch of people talking over each other... Yeah, that sounds real useful.
- BearinG, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2That's what happens in games anyway.. at least if there was group chat, you could have your buddies ONLY in a chat instead of just ONE of them.. the point is not to chat.. its to exclude the retards that you don't want ot hear online.
- Shaflugi, on 12/04/2007, -1/+5Be happy that it's better than what us Wii owners have to deal with :).

- rossinio, on 12/04/2007, -3/+8Except quite a few of us have found that its a lot worse than Xbox Media Centre in terms of speed and compatability (and even interface). Is a real shame as everyone had high hopes for getting rid of the old xbox..
- mrboratsagdiev, on 12/04/2007, -6/+3A MicroATX machine running Linux with the new Linux port of XBMC will rock everyone's world.
- louiedog, on 12/04/2007, -1/+7The speed kind of sucks and it's missing a TON of features, but the quality is better. I have my original Xbox and 360 hooked up to the TV. There was a noticeable difference in quality. However, since I don't have a remote for the 360 and it's slow and missing some important features (subtitles, bookmarks, a database for info, etc) I'll stick with XBMC.
- Nerfdude, on 12/04/2007, -0/+5i won't be able to check out the 360's capabilities for steaming media until after work, but i'm sure it doesn't really compare to good ol' XBMC. it's still great to have this, though, because i'm sure it'll work good enough for me to move my XBMC box to a different tv. streaming media on more machines > streaming media on just one.
- daridave, on 12/04/2007, -0/+4Yes. I complained a few weeks/days ago about the problem that was, with the child accounts, but they fixed that, too! I stand corrected -- Microsoft did a great job!
- pcflea, on 12/05/2007, -1/+4If only our government would listen to us...
- andyd273, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5Oh, but they are listening.
Just pick up your phone, call any random number, say bomb or iran or whatever... they'll be listening.- smiley2billion, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4If you say "Bomb Iran" they might give you a medal.
- andyd273, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5Oh, but they are listening.
- Tyrghast, on 12/05/2007, -2/+1ROFL if microsoft really listened to us they would release another service pack for XP removing the restrictions on the amount of RAM it supports as well as adding DX10
- sl123000, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2You cant just " remove the restrictions on the amount of RAM it supports" because that, my friend is impossible. If you need more ram, move to x64. There is nothing that microsoft can do (even with a trillion dollars) to make 32 bit support more than 3.5gb. It's impossible.
- saleem, on 12/04/2007, -17/+11"It just works."
- Dhalsim007, on 12/04/2007, -21/+69Now if Sony would just move their ass and put this in PS3. That would make my life wonderful....
- mywhitenoise, on 12/04/2007, -8/+31Soon enough. Hopefully we'll get it this month.
Good to know there's good compatibility with the 360.- JayD16, on 12/04/2007, -2/+17Seriously....I guess this goes to show what its like to have as many coder's as Microsoft does. DIVX support goes to PS3 dev kits and Microsoft signs a deal and puts it in a new update in what seems like a month's time. Maybe it IS just that easy and the PS3 will get it this month. I hope it does anyway.
- watership, on 12/04/2007, -0/+5MS has Divx in the works for many many months. The last dashboard update added mpeg4 support and that was in May.
- rpgmaker, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1It isn't a big deal to put DivX support into this things, is just that support divx is like supporting all the rips around the web, all that DRM-less content that they don't want you to use/have/get. But Microsoft is playing the catch up in the game consoles market share so here we are.
Personally, the Xbox is the best thing that Microsoft has done in years, I don't own one though.
- watership, on 12/04/2007, -0/+5MS has Divx in the works for many many months. The last dashboard update added mpeg4 support and that was in May.
- OwdenBowden, on 12/04/2007, -13/+4I think all of the next gen should have this but Not for Nothing - PS3 is still waiting on games to arrive for it - and it has been a year. Sony doesn't Think and that is the problem.
- bejayel, on 12/04/2007, -4/+12um, there are lots of games on the PS3, lots of good ones even. I own a PS3 and i have plenty of good games that i play lots.
Props to Microsoft to getting this update finally. Its nice to be able to just drag my media files over.- Rocketbird, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Hey dude, I'm just wondering which games you're talking about. I recently got sick of all the games (CoD4, GH3, Madden 08) I have and am selling them. Already played Heavenly Sword and Ratchet and Clank and am, at the moment, enjoying everyday shooter. Any recommendations outside those 6?
- DarkShroud, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2@ Rocketbird
Uncharted and soon Unreal.
- OwdenBowden, on 12/04/2007, -2/+2Was not getting into a fanboy thing sorry about that.
- bejayel, on 12/04/2007, -4/+12um, there are lots of games on the PS3, lots of good ones even. I own a PS3 and i have plenty of good games that i play lots.
- Destinatus, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2why did you capitalize "think"? I can't possibly Think of why you would do that.
- JayD16, on 12/04/2007, -2/+17Seriously....I guess this goes to show what its like to have as many coder's as Microsoft does. - estvir, on 12/04/2007, -36/+18Or you could buy an Xbox360, we have awesome games like Mass Effect too.
- mywhitenoise, on 12/04/2007, -24/+32Why the ***** would he spend $400 for a 360 when he already owns a PS3 and divx is coming to it?
And don't tell me exclusives, because most games on 360 are also on PS3 and PC.- dclowd9901, on 12/04/2007, -7/+5I'm no fan boy, but this year, I've enjoyed the company of Bioshock, Mass Effect, Gears of War, Halo 3, Forza 2, Viva Pinata, PGR4 and Crackdown to name a few. For $400.
Comparably speaking, for $600, I had a choice of Resistance, Ratchet and Clank, and the mixed reviewed Motostorm... Seems like the extra $-200 might've been worth it...- mywhitenoise, on 12/05/2007, -6/+6only Forza (which looks like ***** compared to GT5: Prologue), and I believe PGR4 are exclusives. Viva Pinata, and Halo 3 are coming to PC aren't they?
On my end I bought Resistance, Warhawk, Ratchet, Uncharted, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Heavenly Sword, Motorstorm, Tekken Dark Ressurection, GT5: Prologue demo, as well as a couple of multi-platform games. And the PS3 is $400/$500 now.
- mywhitenoise, on 12/05/2007, -6/+6only Forza (which looks like ***** compared to GT5: Prologue), and I believe PGR4 are exclusives. Viva Pinata, and Halo 3 are coming to PC aren't they?
- estvir, on 12/05/2007, -4/+1Wow, the internet sure is SERIOUS BUSINESS.
- dclowd9901, on 12/04/2007, -7/+5I'm no fan boy, but this year, I've enjoyed the company of Bioshock, Mass Effect, Gears of War, Halo 3, Forza 2, Viva Pinata, PGR4 and Crackdown to name a few. For $400.
- santasing, on 12/04/2007, -0/+28Man these door to door salesmen suck.
- Kurisuku, on 12/04/2007, -15/+6Mass Effect has been confirmed as a terrible hype game that doesn't live up to any sort of expectations asides from a lesbian sex scene. What?
- iruel, on 12/04/2007, -4/+7sounds to me like Mass Effect has wronged you in some way Kurisuku. With your constant reference to lesbian sex i would have guess that Mass Effect(the game of course being a female) has had an affair with your mother and torn your family apart. and now you feel that you are not loved and that it is your fault. i suggest you find someone to talk to about this, and i don't think you will find anyone here who gives a damn about your problems.
so take your god damned negativity somewhere else.
- mywhitenoise, on 12/04/2007, -24/+32Why the ***** would he spend $400 for a 360 when he already owns a PS3 and divx is coming to it?
- banmaster, on 12/04/2007, -31/+31You bought a PS3??
- bejayel, on 12/04/2007, -17/+20I bought one too. I personally prefer it to the 360 because i like the game on it, better than th eones on the 360. So shoot me (actually, please dont). Why is a thread about divx support turning into PS3 vs 360 anyway? In a months time they will both have divx support so whatever.
- Kurisuku, on 12/04/2007, -20/+20PS3 has games...?
- freff, on 12/04/2007, -5/+38Well, technically, he did say that he liked the "game" on it, so...
- bejayel, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1I make too many typos. Mostly cause i dont care unless i am doing something professionally.
Still...i laughed.
- bejayel, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1I make too many typos. Mostly cause i dont care unless i am doing something professionally.
- RedHawk911, on 12/04/2007, -4/+11Seriusly Kurisuku. That is just so much fanboy written all over it. PS3 is starting to get great games you cant deny it.... Well.. 90% of all people here on Digg is 360 fanboys...
- kris33, on 12/04/2007, -6/+5The 360 already has great games. PS3 have none right now, but there are some really interesting in development.
- Ramble, on 12/04/2007, -16/+13I have 3 PS3's.
- Bootes, on 12/04/2007, -9/+6I'm selling my 360 to buy a PS3.
- lime148, on 12/05/2007, -3/+9I'm sorry.
- schoate09, on 12/05/2007, -2/+6Don't. I did that 3 months ago, and just traded the PS3 back in. PS3 is very unstable right now, it's bleeding exclusives, and you might regret that. Wait until they sort out the SKU issues first.
The other part of me thinks you're full of ***** and never had a 360.- Bootes, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2I like to play games on the computer the most. And if you look at the number of 360 exclusives that aren't on the computer, you're basically left with Halo 3, which I couldn't care less about.
Without being able to pirate games on the PS3, I already have more than enough games I want to play than I can afford. =/
- Bootes, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2I like to play games on the computer the most. And if you look at the number of 360 exclusives that aren't on the computer, you're basically left with Halo 3, which I couldn't care less about.

- jester55, on 12/04/2007, -13/+9i have both
- Dracusis, on 12/05/2007, -1/+7Dude, you're so not allowed to be impartial on Digg. if you're not a fanboy you'll get dug down from the angry seething mobs on both sides of the fence.
- LuCiFer6, on 12/04/2007, -3/+8Hopefully this press release from Divx should please you..
http://www.divx.com/company/press/press_detail.php ... - supermanred, on 12/04/2007, -9/+3Doubt it. Sony owns a big movie studio... I think its called Sony. I doubt they want DivX on their systems.
- kris33, on 12/04/2007, -6/+1They don't even want to support MP3 (ATRAC anyone?)
- coheedcollapse, on 12/04/2007, -0/+7You can rip CD's directly into MP3 format straight on the system.
- mywhitenoise, on 12/04/2007, -2/+6that's funny, I have plenty of albums in MP3, and AAC on my PS3. ATRAC? Sony makes some pretty stupid decisions, but I don't think they're stupid enough to completely ignore MP3 for ATRAC.
To top it off, it's already been confirmed that Divx is coming to PS3. So many misinformed PS3 bashers.
"PS3 has games?"...yeah dude, I have 9 of them. - FredFredrickson, on 12/04/2007, -6/+3All 9 of them? XD
- WhereAmI, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1I guess Fred can't count. Go to Gamestop, count the games, and move on with your life.
- kris33, on 12/04/2007, -6/+1They don't even want to support MP3 (ATRAC anyone?)
- dubbleenerd, on 12/04/2007, -4/+2first, I am wishing for a program like Connect360 for the PS3.
- arcticblue, on 12/04/2007, -1/+2Mediatomb works fairly well and it is cross platform. It doesn't have transcoding yet, but the devs are working hard on it.
- Tahiri, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2TVersity. Cross platform with transcoding
- DarkShroud, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1WMP11 and Nero will also work.
- Dracusis, on 12/05/2007, -1/+4FYI...
"We are excited to work with Sony Computer Entertainment to bring DivX to PS3," said Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX, Inc. "Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format." - moush, on 12/05/2007, -1/+1i doubt they will, then people won't buy their blueray movies
- mywhitenoise, on 12/04/2007, -8/+31Soon enough. Hopefully we'll get it this month.
- idc5, on 12/04/2007, -6/+175the only good news for microsoft seems to come from Xbox 360
- Ataxia87, on 12/04/2007, -9/+3Once the representative from the customer hardware repair department has finished his weekly report.
- seraph582, on 12/04/2007, -8/+58WRONG! Zune.
Next.- Butros, on 12/04/2007, -30/+4Zune sucks. Get an ipod or a Zen if you want wma/wmv support (With Divx to boot)
- tokyomonster, on 12/04/2007, -8/+36I have in my hands a zune80, that I just got from zuneoriginals.net yesterday. i sold my ipod classic for it, and i'm glad i did. the packaging was astonishing. i can't believe the attention to detail they put into, not to mention the zune just feels alot better than the ipod classic. awesome screen + wifi sync make you dumb to use anything else.
- ronnsprocket, on 12/04/2007, -1/+13zune80 def the best player ive had. unfortunately I chose to sell it b/c running parallels just to use the software really put an unneccasary amount of strain on my macbook pro. i went and picked up the classic 80, and it is utter ***** compared to the zune. its interface is so slow.
- mustbepatient, on 12/04/2007, -3/+6I got a classic 80 iPod because my old 5G 30GB broke under warranty, and I wish I had my 30GB back! The interface is way too slow, I don't know WTF they were thinking.
- emperor799, on 12/07/2007, -0/+1Zune Desktop DOESN'T WORK WITH DIVX!!! STILL!!!!!
:(
- itseffinkasey, on 12/04/2007, -9/+18Don't forget Vista!
- Lythium, on 12/04/2007, -16/+7Many of us are desperately trying TO forget Vista -.-
- BoneStamp, on 12/04/2007, -8/+2Doesn't look like anyone found your sarcasm funny. I dugg ya.

- xXShadowstormXx, on 12/04/2007, -9/+48Microsoft Office, Vista, Zune, Xbox 360, - they're all doing quite reasonably well.
- nirav72, on 12/04/2007, -27/+5What planet are you on? Vista doing reasonably well?..HAHAHAHA..tell me you forgot the "/sarcasm" tag.
- DudleyInnocent, on 12/04/2007, -3/+37No one told you to install vista on your commadore. Leave your crappy experiences at the door.
- GliTCH82, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3Seriously, it's not my problem if you don't have a decent computer to run it or can't figure out how to not ***** it up on a decent computer of your own, but just because you can't enjoy it doesn't meant that I'm lying when I say I do. My friends have decent rigs running Vista, and they think it's great.
- nirav72, on 12/04/2007, -27/+5What planet are you on? Vista doing reasonably well?..HAHAHAHA..tell me you forgot the "/sarcasm" tag.
- FutureGuy, on 12/04/2007, -0/+13MS has a lot going for it, not the best of times of MS haters. 2 of 10 top innovative products of the year as per popular mechanics were from MS http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/industr ... (Surface and Sync http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDiVWPtn010 ), Zune is one of the hottest gadgets of the season (who knew) and 360 is doing very well. MS also posted the best growth since 1999.
- GliTCH82, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1One day, your computer will be a big ass table.
- Shaflugi, on 12/04/2007, -0/+6The Xbox 360 is Microsoft's answer to Apple's iMac. With the 360, they don't have to deal with tons of hardware incompatibilities like with PCs.
/pcuser- IEatHamburgers, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2Imagine if Microsoft put Windows Vista on the 360, attached a keyboard (and maybe a monitor), and sold it for ~$600... it would wreck their standings with Dell, HP, etc. but a simple-setup PC that plays all their favorite games without any maintenance could bring in a lot of money for Microsoft. Of course, the PC manufacturers will ramp up their support for Linux to stay alive, and it might doom them in the long run. Makes for one hell of a scenario, though.
- keithcarberry, on 12/04/2007, -18/+4So I don't see any benefit for me because I use xbox 360 as a media center extender. When you have the xbox as an extender I can't go to dashboard. it's not available to me that way. Unless I am doing something wrong! I always get a message saying that I have a media center pc and if I want to see a video I need to go to the media center!
- j3oomerang, on 12/04/2007, -7/+1Im pretty sure this means suppoert through media center.
Ive deleted all my 700mb divx movies as ive become a high def freak. I even just built a HTPC with a combo hd-dvd/bluray player . But now i need a few terrabyte drives to back up, poor me- asskey, on 12/04/2007, -1/+17Thats a lot of porn...

- bejayel, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2I think the point is to avoid doing such a thing.
- Myonosken, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2You avoid the need to transcode, which is the main problem.
- bejayel, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2I think the point is to avoid doing such a thing.
- soljin, on 12/04/2007, -0/+5You just need to setup windows media player 11 so that it will index your content then get this update. I'm still waiting for video playlists.
- fiftyeggs, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3I'm in the same boat as you. I was all excited for this update, but my x360 MCE Extender feature will not play Divx. It will still play Divx in the dashboard, but I've gotten so used to MCE Extender's nice UI...
- theMurdocVolta, on 12/04/2007, -1/+3So whats the definitive answer as of now? no Divx playback for MCE?
edit: RTFA: I am a victim of n00bism :[ - keithcarberry, on 12/05/2007, -0/+0Ok after spending time on the phone with xbox support today, Soljin is right. Just setup the media player 11 to share with xbox 360 and it kind of works. Here 's the deal It works only in dashboard and it seems the video files need to be in the "my video" folder. I even created a short cut in the my video folder to link it to my videos that are located in a different directory. No such luck. Anyone have any ideas?
- j3oomerang, on 12/04/2007, -7/+1Im pretty sure this means suppoert through media center.
- ApokalypseNow, on 12/04/2007, -28/+12Not bad, MS, not bad. Still not going to make me turn off my TVersity server though. For those not aware, TVersity (http://www.tversity.com) is a UPnP server that you set up on your PC, which will transcode video to formats that your 360 (or other hardware, if that is your whim) understands, letting you watch damn near any video from your PC on the TV. When you're actively transcoding video, it is a bit of a processor hog (I mean, that's not an inexpensive process in terms of CPU cycles), but I've really enjoyed the results I got from the software.
- skifreak107, on 12/04/2007, -1/+64Not having to transcode is infinitely better than transcoding.
- ApokalypseNow, on 12/04/2007, -4/+3Oh without question - but Microsoft still doesn't support all the video formats in my media library, so I still need the capability to transcode to ones it does.
- BearinG, on 12/07/2007, -1/+1Ok.. and what's wrong with using transcoding ONLY for the trouble videos?
- thebaron2, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2Not to mention that - at least for me - transcoding HD video just didn't work well enough using a laptop and wireless network. I don't even own a desktop anymore so couldn't run the server from there and my 360 isn't near our router, so wireless is the only option. While TVersity was great for music, trying to transcode the video just proved to be too intensive and my playback stuttered.
Downloading, copying to 500GB HDD hooked to the 360 and playing everything directly from there is a VAST improvement.
I just want to test whether or not you can associate box art JPEGs with the movies on an external HDD now. If so this is all that I'll ever need!- ApokalypseNow, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2You might try again with a more recent version (better HD support recently, if I recall correctly) although the wireless part might still cause issues. Still, it sounds like you've got a good solution with your HDD copying.
- thebaron2, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2I think the wireless is the real issue, but maybe I'll give it ago again for ***** and giggles.
The only downfall of the HDD option is that it has to be FAT32, with comes with file size limits of 4GB, so HD movies are usually too big. It's a bummer, but I think I can live with the standard 700mb AVIs - I mean hey, the price is right!
- thebaron2, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2I think the wireless is the real issue, but maybe I'll give it ago again for ***** and giggles.

- TRUEPATRIOT, on 12/04/2007, -0/+4tversity no longer auto converts dvix/xvids(in my small test)and plays everything fine just like wmp11 would
- graemee, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3The guys over at TVersity will likely update allowing you to still keep using it, but with less transcoding required. You'll need it for those soft subtitled files and MKVs. I doubt MS will ever support softsubs or MKV at all. I wish they had DTS pass thru support, anyone test that?
- fgsfdsfgsfds, on 12/04/2007, -2/+3What's with all the digging down? Parent sounds like he was trying to be useful.
- nirav72, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2Also..you can't skip/forward through most transcoded video streams. So transcoding still sucks. I rather just run it off a large thumb drive for now or use WMP 11. Hopefully they might add support for SMB in the future to get video off a network share.
- deehlandes, on 12/04/2007, -0/+0Even with a large thumb drive, it needs to be formatted to FAT32, so your file size is limited to 4GB. In that case, transcoding may be your only option
- deehlandes, on 12/04/2007, -1/+3Don't understand why ppl keep digging you down - nice post, good info!

- ApokalypseNow, on 12/04/2007, -1/+2No *****, I'm just trying to point out some software I found useful for getting video from my PC to my 360 without using WMP11 or other *****-ass MS software. If you can't recognize the difference then I suggest you unplug your computer and go in search of something resembling a social life, as your skills in that area have obviously atrophied from disuse.

- sldSquirrel, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Awesome advise. Unfortunately, only 1 out of 3 of my test videos work. I can play a short, low-quality stage6 video, but not a 44-minute episode of House from stage6. Probably a problem with Connect360 (which is still just a trial version)
- eightballx, on 12/06/2007, -0/+4Nullriver updated connect360, now supports divx natively :)

- soljin, on 12/04/2007, -11/+12The real story is how much better it plays HD wmvs. I had downloaded some HD wmvs from the usual places and was disappointed that even in it's native format most action scenes choked. But this morning I tried them again after the update and playback was FLAWLESS of simple 11g. Put my old shuttle HTPC on ebay that very morning.
Although my really old simpsons and Starget SG-1s wouldn't play because they were too old but there are new DVD rips out I can snag.- eightballx, on 12/04/2007, -2/+3They most probably didnt work as they were DiVX >5.0 which werent mpeg4 based.
- vagarach, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1What?? Divx is an implementation of mpeg4....so you mean divx6 is something else?
- KillerSiafu, on 12/04/2007, -12/+1Definitely good news... Like Apokalypse, I will still be running my TVersity server, which I recommend if you have the computer horsepower to do so. Mainly the reason I will still be running it is for HD support (particularly markosa video files .mkv's) as well as the other random video files that you come across. It's also very good at streaming to other pieces of hardware and even through a web browser.
But, if you know that the file you're playing is a divx (or other supported format) and you don't want to use CPU cycles, it's very easy to turn off TVersity and just stream through WMP like normal. - seastobble, on 12/04/2007, -7/+2mine just says mixed media disk and doesn't let me play anything
- tanside, on 12/04/2007, -1/+5haha, you need to load them in the media blade, under video then choose current disc.
- XThunderStormX, on 12/04/2007, -4/+79Time for MSoft to tackle x/h264 and Matrosaka containers.
Mad props, Bill.- Gerz1219, on 12/04/2007, -2/+5Heh, even though I'm beyond shocked that they added Divx/Xvid playback, I sincerely doubt they're going to add support for a format which is used almost solely for pirating HD-DVDs and Blu-Ray discs. Although if they did, I could pretty much get rid of my HTPC.
Anyone think they'll upgrade the MCE extender software to look like Vista's? The lack of Divx/Xvid support now makes the Extender seem broken, and the MCE 2005 interface is starting to look really dated.- TrancePhreak, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3MCE 2005 has been surplanted by Vista's MCE capabilities.
- malhussaini, on 12/04/2007, -0/+5If you use Vista to stream you will automatically get the new Vista interface on the Media Center Extender interface.
- byronm, on 12/06/2007, -0/+1which unfortunately isn't updated to take advantage of the xbox 360 divx/xvid support yet.
- shredswithpiks, on 12/04/2007, -0/+7worth noting: matroska containers are extremely widely used in anime fansub releases
- RobotBuddha, on 12/04/2007, -1/+4That's what's keeping me away as well, for the most part. xbmc can't handle h264 very well, but it gives a great interface and can play mkv and ogm. Having to do without rifftrax mkv encodes is just too much of a loss. Not that I think too many others are in the same camp as me there.
- Nerfdude, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1eh, i'm not too concerned, i'll just watch my multiaudio anime eps at work now. thanks microsoft!

- bejayel, on 12/04/2007, -2/+1just going out on a limb here. I dont have my own 360 or anything. but would VLC not work? or did Microsoft tie it directly with windows media player 11
- gage006, on 12/04/2007, -0/+4WMP is pretty much your best bet. The 360 is quite finicky with the software it'll connect to.
- anononon, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1I'm betting Tversity will have a fix very soon.
- pixelate, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1This comment actually helped me out-- I have been using the Zune software alone to share media to my 360, and figured it would be the same deal for the new video files that were supported. I was confused when none of my computer's Divx/Xvid avi's showed up in my 360's video list.
Had to manually turn on sharing in WMP 11 as well, and add the videos to my library there. Now I have the choice of two 'sources', one is the Zune library on my computer, and the other is the WMP library. AVI's work fine from the latter.

/sarcasm - nirav72, on 12/04/2007, -1/+7correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't x.264 fall under the h.264 specs?..I think the 360 supports most flavors of 264, except for maybe some containers. You can't expect everything. Whats next?.People will want real video format? (ducks for cover).
- staticneuron, on 12/04/2007, -2/+2You're a slow one.
- tito13kfm, on 12/04/2007, -1/+5Yes, it will play stuff encoded with x264. Without getting in to the technical aspects of it, just use one of the Xbox360 presets in meGUI with the neroAAC encoder for the sound.
For media you already have downloaded in an MKV container if you demux the video and audio and remux it in to an MP4 container that works fine the majority of the time. It will have some problems with videos encoded with level 5.1, sometimes this can be fixed by editing the file header to fake level 4.1, most of the time a reencode will be necessary.
It's not perfect, but the x/H 264 support is pretty decent with the 360.- RiotMac, on 12/04/2007, -1/+1oh you just have to rig an x.264 file to get it to play. thats fun. like someone else said welcome to 2003 MS with the divx support.

- bikr, on 12/04/2007, -11/+5So does it work on a USB HDD or not!?!?!?!?! I can't find this answer anywhere...
- eightballx, on 12/04/2007, -0/+9Yep, no NTFS support though, a fat32 formatted usb hdd will work afaik
- Dochtuir, on 12/04/2007, -0/+5No NTFS? That's bent. all my HDDs are NTFS :(
- jordan1, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2use macdrive 7 to format a USb HDD as HFS+...the 360 will natively play 4gb and larger files from that file system for some reason. I read about this on thegreenbutton a few months ago and it works great.
- xXGeechXx, on 12/04/2007, -1/+6yes it does. Fat32 compression only though.
- DBNKR, on 12/04/2007, -0/+4Yes it does. I tried with a USB keychain thing and it worked. I also read somewhere that you can use a USB disk as well.
- NeoMatrixJR, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1works for other video formats previously...don't know why they wouldn't let you pull divx from USB hdd.
- dijital, on 12/04/2007, -3/+3USB HDD... No. USB Flash Drives.. Yes. I'm sure it's a driver issue. My WD-MyBook is read as another HDD and not as 'Removable Storage' - I think therein lies the trouble. Shouldn't be long before someone figures out how to make it work - if they haven't already.
- Farik, on 12/04/2007, -2/+5USB HDD and flash work in exactly the same way, as a mass storage device. There is something wrong with your setup if it doesn't work.
- weirdlookinguy, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2Your WD HDD is probably formatted as NTFS. It has to be FAT32 for the 360 to play media off it.
- joethedouchebag, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2If your WD drive is read as another HDD, that's pretty remarkable because the USB port on the 360 is read-only (ie you can't save content through it), either yours has magical write abilities or there's something wrong with your setup like Farik said.
- vagarach, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2There is no such thing as a read only usb port, or any port for that matter.
- jordan1, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1use Macdrive 7 to format as HFS+. the 360 will play any ting over 4gb and larger from this file system (Mac unix file system btw)

- tito13kfm, on 12/04/2007, -1/+7It CAN play 720p xvid files. They just need to be of low enough bittrate and you need to use the fastest available settings in XBMC (low quality pixel shader). The main limitation is the amount of RAM in the xbox (32mb). You can solder in ram from a dead box and double it to 64. This allows the playing of most 720p xvid files with a minimum of stuttering.
CPU speed is less of a hurdle for HD material in XBMC. The main limitation is the max bitrate of the video you a playing back. Depending on the actual resolution of the video file (1280x720 or 1280x544 for anamorphic stuff) you can get pretty decent playback at 3-4K kb/sec in HD xvid on a stock xbox.
A self compiled version of xbmc with the CVS versions of mplayer will give you the best performance, but is beyond the scope of most people... including me..

- mrboratsagdiev, on 12/04/2007, -1/+1I've been using MKV forever on the XBMC install I have and it works great. The only vids I've been able to throw at it that make it choke are 1080p, but damned near everything else that's been encoded correctly works like a charm.
- tito13kfm, on 12/04/2007, -0/+4MKV is NOT a codec. It is a container.
- DrewBlood, on 12/04/2007, -0/+4Your XBMC plays MKV? Mine chokes on it.
- zenerdiode, on 12/04/2007, -13/+2Great news. But still waiting for native .VOB streaming, integrated into the VMC interface. C'mon Microsoft, if you can justify Divx, why can't you justify DVD rips? Almost nobody pirates straight .VOBs, so why lock it out for the sake of the MPAA or whatever?
- eightballx, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3Huh? If no one pirates straight VOBs then why add streaming support?
After all, the 360 can play DVD's through the dvd tray, if your going to rip a dvd, why not rip to high quality xvid, especially if your planning to play it back through a network on a 360. - zenerdiode, on 12/04/2007, -4/+1um, for Legit movie storage purposes. People store 500+ dvd's on servers or NAS and it'd be nice to be able to stream them to wherever you have your xbox. Us non-pirates would also like to stream movies as well.
And no, ripping to xvid won't give you better quality than the original .vob. Xvid, divx, or .h264 or whatever are LOSSY compression algorithms. You can't get superior image quality (compared to the source) through encoding. For example, ripped CD audio in lossless WAV form is ALWAYS better than mp3 or AAC. The same applies to video formats. You may post-process the resulting Divx file to your liking, but the divx file will inherently have less data and resolution compared to the original .VOB.- eightballx, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2Still, its quite an obscure container to support for mpeg2, if you have the resources to have enough server space for 500+ uncompressed DVDs, I'm guessing you have enough resources to have enough money to buy a cheap linux box, or just have one laying around to connect to your tv and connect anyway you like.
Also, if you're that much of a videophile, why arent you using HD formats? - zenerdiode, on 12/04/2007, -0/+0Obscure? It's the NATIVE container for DVD mpeg2. I personally don't have 500+ uncompressed DVDs...only about 150...but plenty of other people do. But your'e getting sidetracked, and it's not about personal resource. If the hardware is available, why leave certain people locked out from using it?
Oh, and I am using HD formats via the HD-DVD drive. Unfortunately, not all movies are offered in HD-DVD or BluRay. - eightballx, on 12/06/2007, -0/+1I phrased that badly, what I meant is if you're going to store your movies in a little-used format, you'll have to be prepared to make extra steps to ensure they work, its a compromise, better quality, or more effort.
And before you say that .vob is a native container, which it is, being a native container doesnt mean its going to be supported everywhere.
The 360 is primarily a games console, the media stuff is a bonus imho
- eightballx, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2Still, its quite an obscure container to support for mpeg2, if you have the resources to have enough server space for 500+ uncompressed DVDs, I'm guessing you have enough resources to have enough money to buy a cheap linux box, or just have one laying around to connect to your tv and connect anyway you like.
- edicius, on 12/04/2007, -0/+4Yeah, "Legit" movie storage!!!!
- zenerdiode, on 12/04/2007, -2/+1Oh, and for all those that doubt legitimate DVD storage, you should open your minds a little and do some reading here:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f= ...
It's called an HTPC and even Microsoft natively supports in MCE2005 and Vista Media Center. Jesus ***** Christ, I thought Digg was full of somewhat tech knowledgable people, but it turns out so many don't even know even basic codecs and containers. Sad.
- eightballx, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3Huh? If no one pirates straight VOBs then why add streaming support?
- sparced, on 12/04/2007, -14/+5Divx is already dead to me. I've ripped all my DVD's and look for torrents that are in the superior H.264 MP4's first.
- tanside, on 12/04/2007, -0/+18well in a few months to a year we'll catch up to you, until then i'll be happy with this format, as it is the most common, you don't have to be a codec snob.
- DBNKR, on 12/04/2007, -2/+4codec snob... hehe, dugg.

- samuraipizzacat, on 12/04/2007, -1/+8Finally! Now I don't have to use an S-Video cable from my laptop to my TV which is streaming files from my desktop. What a mess that was.
- PedleZelnip, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3LOL, I did that, and then I did the VGA output for awhile too (although that was dropped as then the sound was coming from the laptop rather than the TV).
Then I did the transcoding thing, which was a hassle -- waiting 10 minutes to re-encode it into WMV only to have it look OK at best.
Finally we have it the way it should be -- just play the damn original file with no extra muss or fuss. Only took em 2 years...... ;)
- PedleZelnip, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3LOL, I did that, and then I did the VGA output for awhile too (although that was dropped as then the sound was coming from the laptop rather than the TV).
- charz0r, on 12/04/2007, -15/+6Kinda slow aren't they? Thought HD x264 was "the *****" nowadays?
- JustinPM, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3xvid and divx are largely the most popular media format for downloadable video IMHOBTJMS.
- Acglaphotis, on 12/04/2007, -1/+1it isn't "the *****", it's just *****.

- DrewBlood, on 12/04/2007, -2/+5Anyone tried any subtitled video? Does it support .sub or .srt at all?
- tanside, on 12/04/2007, -0/+10i don't believe so as of yet, you'll just have to settle with re-encoding the file with hard subtitles.
- lostradamus, on 12/04/2007, -16/+31Yay divx! Welcome to 2003!
- pronouncable, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1i see what you did there.
- MonsterChaOS, on 12/04/2007, -6/+22wow, only a few years behind XBMC... Good to see they are catching up though.
- chris9902, on 12/04/2007, -2/+18720p DivX torrents > XBMC.
- nirav72, on 12/04/2007, -2/+8Dugg for 720p. However, I think XBMC does upscale to 720p. Although not the same as true 720p. But not bad for a 5 year old application.
- mrboratsagdiev, on 12/04/2007, -2/+5XBMC upscales beautifully. Even better than the progressive scan DVD player that controls my surround sound. In fact, the only movie files it chokes on routinely are 1080p, but the new Linux version of the media center will have that taken care of easily.
- malhussaini, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2XBMC will attempt to play 720p and larger files, and in most cases it would with a huge amount of slowdown. However I found that it could play 720p and 1080i MPEG2 files without any significant slowdowns.
- nirav72, on 12/04/2007, -2/+8Dugg for 720p. However, I think XBMC does upscale to 720p. Although not the same as true 720p. But not bad for a 5 year old application.
- fani, on 12/04/2007, -1/+5Bitches will always find something to complain about instead of being happy about this superb functionality
- chris9902, on 12/04/2007, -2/+18720p DivX torrents > XBMC.
- DaveXensen, on 12/04/2007, -4/+27still no reason to turn off my old school xbox with 350gb hard drive, which plays back xvid/divx perfectly with any sort of weird option i demand (audio delays, aspect ratios, etc.)
XBMC FTW- DBNKR, on 12/04/2007, -1/+8720p?
- JustinPM, on 12/04/2007, -1/+3HD playback on the ol' xbox though is kinda rough. Seems like the 360 would have the power though.
- nirav72, on 12/04/2007, -1/+24Try playing a 2 gig 720p Div/Xvid file on the old xbox using XBMC. It will start stuttering. Doesn't have the CPU to run it smoothly. Especially over the network. The 360 will play it without any issues. (I have both boxes.)
- PedleZelnip, on 12/04/2007, -0/+4True, but for those of us who don't have original Xbox's and don't feel like trying to find one on Ebay and then go through the hassle of modding it, this is a nice addition to the 360.
- seraph582, on 12/04/2007, -2/+6Does it playback HD res divx/xvid?
- eightballx, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2Up to 720p I think, I'm not sure though, I remember reading upto 720p
- nirav72, on 12/04/2007, -0/+5Yup..played couple of high-res movie trailers in .mp4 format. Runs really smooth. XBMC couldn't even play them without hiccups.
- ksakorn, on 12/04/2007, -1/+2yup tried planet Earth HD worked 100%
- DBNKR, on 12/04/2007, -4/+3I want to be able to connect into an ftp-box i got standing in a corner.
- nirav72, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2You can't connect directly to ftp. You might need to setup a Upnp server somewhere on your network. Or just download Windows Media player 11.
- BLKMGK, on 12/04/2007, -1/+4FTP?! How about an SMB share instead of needing yet another machine to stream? I have NAS on my network full of video - having to use still more CPUs to stream is silly. Give me SMB networking and I'm thrilled! Meanwhile I'll build a Linux XBMC machine...
- rufo, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2You can find plenty of UPnP servers that are capable of streaming to the 360 - just install one on your NAS.
- secleinteer, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Yeah, without FTP support, there's no way I'd use this. XBMC had it years ago - why can't they do it on the 360 do it already?
- Kerath, on 12/04/2007, -1/+10I tested with an axxo rip and an a 720p divx movie. Both worked fine.
- DBNKR, on 12/04/2007, -3/+1I want to be able to connect into an ftp-box i got standing in a corner. How would I go about that?
- tito13kfm, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1http://ushare.geexbox.org/ if you're running linux... no idea how to do it on windows.. sorry
- DBNKR, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2This is available with apt-get..! Hmm! Please answer if you know if this can solve the following scenario:
Can i use uShare to connect to the FTP, and make it share the ftp connection with the 360? That would be awsome... - tito13kfm, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1Damnit.. My response got lost somehow..
Basically, download ftpfs, mount the ftp drive, share with ushare.

- bingo000, on 12/04/2007, -1/+9Are we are getting that for iTunes anytime soon Mr. Jobs?
- TheMu, on 12/04/2007, -1/+10Sweet, I'm getting my 360 today too.
- SKyStrikerX, on 12/04/2007, -1/+5I wonder how it stacks up against XBMC. Time to go find out!
- nirav72, on 12/04/2007, -0/+4Thats like comparing apples to oranges. Or maybe grapefruit to an orange. XBMC is a full blown media management layer. Supports streaming over SMB and Upnp. Plus a spiffy interface, support for scripting etc. The 360 video playback interface is barebones. However, both of them have their pros and cons. Most people here probably have both systems.
- Tahiri, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1I do. It's like comparing apples to apple seeds really.
- section31, on 12/04/2007, -4/+17hello, we still need mkv and x264 support.
- MiDri, on 12/04/2007, -0/+9has had h264 for months -- x264 is an encoder.
- omegastaralpha, on 12/04/2007, -0/+5He is refering to the x264 Matrosaka container .mkv HD files which do not work and are not part of the standard h.264 codec. And I too am waiting anxiously for its support so I can have another device in the home besides my PC which can play them. Xvid/Divx support is long overdue and should have been there since day one. I just hope they continue to add these codecs to get a truely useful media player out of the 360.
- XTrek, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Get a DViCo TVIX M-4100. It can play mkv 1080p content. And just about anything else. It has a 3.5" sata drive bay also.
- m00nstone, on 12/04/2007, -1/+31Hell just froze over. The number of people that had posted this would NEVER happen....

http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/ge ... - anononon, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2I'm one of those people who had doubts. Would you hand me a new shovel? Mine just broke.
- Tahiri, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4I knew it would come to this. When PS3 launched with like 6 more codecs than 360 had I knew a codec war was coming.
And we're the victors - pheen, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1I remember Major Nelson himself laughing at the suggestion that Divx/Xvid would ever play on the 360...
- IEatHamburgers, on 12/04/2007, -0/+6Yup, it's 27 degrees Fahrenheit
- stinger666, on 12/04/2007, -14/+1I don't know much about codecs but it only plays about 5% of all my divx/xvid videos.
- manifestdata, on 12/04/2007, -1/+12Obviously you don't know much about codecs if it only plays 5%. Either you have no idea how to rip to divx, you are an idiot trying to play ogg vorbis files, or a fanboy planting flamebait. Most likely the latter so shame on me for responding!
- cygandg, on 12/04/2007, -5/+0kiedys sobie kupie xboxa:)
- MalDON, on 12/04/2007, -0/+5The upscaling works pretty nice. Looks a lot better watching The Office on my 50" tv than it does on my 20" computer monitor.

- Jangles, on 12/04/2007, -0/+10This morning has been like christmas for me. All these videos I have had now all work. Unfortunately I have a mac and I have to wait for an update to connect 360 to support streaming...but hooking up my external HDD or flash drive (which is also a new feature, thank God!) will work just fine in the mean time.
I wish MS was this great in their other depts. I may be an Apple fanboy but I lOVE my 360.- supermanred, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2Connect 360 to support streaming? I seem to be able to play all movies fine, and my Macbook is wifi connected to my home network.
- Iwantawii, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3Someone wrote above that you can rename the .avi//divx/.xvid to .wmv in your /Users/Jangles/Movies directory and Connect360 will stream them as you'd expect.
- whoamarcos, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2it works!!
thank you so much!

- GeekSwag, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2Not likely, but I heard you can play divx off of USB storage devices. I'll be testing as soon as I get home.
- Tahiri, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2Just run a UPnP server
- Protoss, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1You know of any that support AVIs yet? The ones I found aren't updated, and block the 360 from even opening AVis, I try WMP11 and it works fine.
- Po0py, on 12/04/2007, -2/+4I cant seem get some xvid files to work, although the files that do work are running perfectly. I can't get subtitle files to work, either.
Also, it doesn't seem to support Media Center streaming. You can only stream by selecting the source drive in the dashboard and then selecting the video file.- nirav72, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1External Subtitles will not work , unless you encode them and recreate your avi.
- phoque, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Same here... Heroes works, TopGear doesnt...
- mburgoon, on 12/04/2007, -7/+4Even better feature included in today's update (from xbox.com):
"Starting on December 4, all Xbox LIVE members will receive a free system update with a host of new features and enhancements. Included in this update will be the launch of the Xbox Originals, which, for the first time ever, will enable consumers to download and own full Xbox games , such as Halo® , Psychonauts™, Crimson Skies®: High Road to Revenge™, and Fable ® among others directly to their Xbox 360. This new service will launch with an array of blockbuster titles spanning the most popular genres from action-adventure to classic role-playing games." - TomT223, on 12/04/2007, -8/+3A great way to play DixX/XviD files on your tv is through the Philips 5982 DVD player. - supermanred, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1On the mac side, a 15 dollar cable adapter from your PC to the HDTV... On the windows side you can also just plug in your PC directly.
- SpaceNinjaDino, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1That's what I did until now. The 360 update makes this device nearly obsolete.

- DJPhoenix, on 12/04/2007, -0/+6It still doesn't do 720p HD well.
