joystiq.com — Finally, after what seemed an interminable wait, Microsoft was ready to let us in on the big picture. Joystiq spoke with Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg about the Fall update and what was still in store -- DivX and Xvid support, reduced prices on XBLA "Hits" and more.

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemupdates/20 ...- itsthebrod, on 11/30/2007, -11/+26Now that's an update list! Where are all the PS3 "home" fanboys/XBL critics when you need (to make fun of) them?
- KicktheDonkey, on 11/30/2007, -23/+6When will all you guys learn that they're just video game consoles, and not religious experiences?
- strictnein, on 11/30/2007, -1/+22Heathen!
- DudleyInnocent, on 11/30/2007, -1/+13BLASPHEMY!
- fxspec06, on 11/30/2007, -1/+2When will you learn that people who come to digg would rather talk about video games than religious experiences?
On a side note, I would love to see the ratio of people who attend church to people who play video games.
- brianjlowry, on 11/30/2007, -17/+2It appears they left out bugs that they introduced making all of those improvements.
- strictnein, on 11/30/2007, -2/+11This isn't Sony.
- piper999, on 11/30/2007, -4/+62.01 still giving you problems? Waaaah.
- zengonzo, on 11/30/2007, -16/+7Probably on their consoles instead of waiting on a return from the service center?
.. I'm on my first repair.- schoate09, on 11/30/2007, -4/+14Playing what, Folding@Home?
Sorry, but the PS3 tries to act as a glorified computer.- zengonzo, on 11/30/2007, -2/+6Too true .. You'll notice I wrote 'on their' instead of 'playing their'.
- Nerfdude, on 11/30/2007, -9/+7high five. nobody should be digging you down, the 360 failure rate is unbelievable.... until you buy one and it fails. mine died last night, i've had it for two weeks.
- moskaudancer, on 11/30/2007, -3/+2"the 360 failure rate is unbelievable" does not follow logically from "mine died last night, i've had it for two weeks". It might be prudent to perhaps take others people's experiences into account before making a sweeping generalization.
- schoate09, on 11/30/2007, -4/+14Playing what, Folding@Home?
- schoate09, on 11/30/2007, -3/+6Ah yes, Digg seems to be full of them lately.
- KicktheDonkey, on 11/30/2007, -23/+6When will all you guys learn that they're just video game consoles, and not religious experiences?
- hollismb, on 11/30/2007, -1/+23Thank you, and especially for making it the first comment. This is to where the article should have linked.
- cawpin, on 11/30/2007, -4/+7Dugg for the great job on not using a preposition to end a sentence.
- Nobi-Wan, on 11/30/2007, -3/+7So much for ever having to buy a movie download on XBLM again.
- vannoy, on 11/30/2007, -1/+8Did you ever REALLY have to in the first place?
- Nobi-Wan, on 11/30/2007, -1/+2I meant "in general." I never bought one but I fail to see why anyone would, now.
- smiley2billion, on 12/01/2007, -2/+2Simplicity. Joe User out there may not want the hassle of downloading to his PC then setting up WMP11 for streaming, etc, etc. Now, for people like you and I this is perfect!
- Nobi-Wan, on 11/30/2007, -1/+2I meant "in general." I never bought one but I fail to see why anyone would, now.
- vannoy, on 11/30/2007, -1/+8Did you ever REALLY have to in the first place?
- Mullinsmcd, on 11/30/2007, -5/+18As a PS3 owner , Im glad to see updates like this for the 360. Competition and the pushing of hardware/software capabilities is a win/win for everyone.
- jon02129, on 11/30/2007, -13/+11Lol.
- artofwar420, on 11/30/2007, -6/+4I lol'ed at your lol.

- Tophillious, on 11/30/2007, -0/+26"Added fade out transition when powering down console" ***** yes! Finally!
- Turbidity, on 11/30/2007, -1/+9That's just the media updates. The full (as far as i know) list is much bigger:
http://blogs.msdn.com/xboxteam/archive/2007/11/30/ ...- rishid, on 11/30/2007, -1/+5CONFIRMED Divx and Xvid Support
What types of AVI files are supported?
The Xbox 360 supports files encoded using MPEG-4 Part 2, Simple and Advanced Simple Profile. These files are often referred to as Xvid or DivX® video files. Many common PC DVD authoring tools, cameras, and camcorders are capable of encoding files using MPEG-4. Note that some files authored for DivX devices may also contain additional functionality(menus, subtitles, multiple audio tracks, etc). The Xbox 360 will attempt to play these files, but does not support any of the additional functionality and in some cases will be unable to play the file.- Nerfdude, on 11/30/2007, -5/+3so it can play divx files but can't play my multiple audio track, subtitled vids? looks like i'm keeping the original xbox with XBMC around for a while longer. bummer.
- itsthebrod, on 12/01/2007, -1/+4Looks like you need to get normal ***** videos to play on your Xbox.
- smiley2billion, on 12/01/2007, -1/+2Also:
"The Xbox 360 will attempt to play these files"
If not, then get some hardcoded subs?
- Nerfdude, on 11/30/2007, -5/+3so it can play divx files but can't play my multiple audio track, subtitled vids? looks like i'm keeping the original xbox with XBMC around for a while longer. bummer.
- rishid, on 11/30/2007, -1/+5CONFIRMED Divx and Xvid Support
- sinembarg0, on 11/30/2007, -1/+6Also important but not mentioned on that list is the Child account *****. I can finally "promote" my child account to an adult account since I'm over 18 now. Also, child acounts can use Live Messenger now too, so I can choose not to promote my account so I won't get any ads, and I can still use messenger.
- schoate09, on 11/30/2007, -1/+8"Improved Xbox guide performance ~2x"
Been looking for that, so the guide is more robust when accessed within a game.- LegendarySock, on 11/30/2007, -1/+3That caught my eye too! Its great, especially since games like Halo 3 and COD4 are integrating friends list into the guide. I hated waiting literally 2+ seconds for the guide to come up. It may not seem like much, but it was a real annoyance.
- SmokeMeAKipper, on 11/30/2007, -1/+4Video FAQ
http://blogs.msdn.com/xboxteam/archive/2007/11/30/ ... - Psythik, on 12/01/2007, -0/+1STILL no support for more resolutions (especially of the 16:10 variety)??? *****!!!
- itsthebrod, on 11/30/2007, -11/+26Now that's an update list! Where are all the PS3 "home" fanboys/XBL critics when you need (to make fun of) them?
- FredFredrickson, on 11/30/2007, -9/+212Say what you will about Microsoft, but they sure do seem like they listen to the community and try to implement the things we want with dashboard updates.
- NinjaBoy, on 11/30/2007, -2/+26Cause competition is a great thing.
- SkubaEL, on 11/30/2007, -23/+3Right, like they listened to us about 16:10 support?
- turpenine, on 11/30/2007, -6/+28who even wants that? Like three people.
- DokGonzo, on 11/30/2007, -8/+3Or anyone who wants to play their xbox on a widescreen computer monitor, hmm?
- FredFredrickson, on 11/30/2007, -2/+6You can use the 360 on a 16:10 monitor... you just have to put up with a tiny bit of distortion because you have to use a 16:9 ratio.
- FredFredrickson, on 11/30/2007, -2/+9I wouldn't mind having it, but I understand that it's not a high priority when it comes to the other things. Overall I am happy with the long list of updates and improvements, and it only serves to show you that eventually, they probably will get to it.
- schoate09, on 11/30/2007, -2/+8Do you understand how that will ***** up all current games, and future developments?
- Abaddon1125, on 11/30/2007, -3/+2Not necessarily. I think most people would be happy with small black borders on the tops and bottoms of their screens, as long as there wasn't any distortion of the image.
- schoate09, on 11/30/2007, -1/+3Many, but many here are demanding full support of 16:10, which is just unrealistic.
- davidrools, on 11/30/2007, -1/+4Shouldn't the monitor be the one to take care of that? If they put component, composite, or s-video inputs on a computer monitor, they've got to expect 4:3 or 16:9 input signals. For those who got the xbox vga cable to hook up to the monitor then yes, some scaling would be nice, but the distortion is minor. I occasionally play on a 5:4 monitor and it's acceptable....i mean at least it works.
- Abaddon1125, on 11/30/2007, -3/+2Not necessarily. I think most people would be happy with small black borders on the tops and bottoms of their screens, as long as there wasn't any distortion of the image.
- turpenine, on 11/30/2007, -6/+28who even wants that? Like three people.
- REDBLIND, on 11/30/2007, -1/+10Thats just a "nice to have". Be thankful you can even hook it up to your pc monitor. I can't do that on my Wii.
- jjb123, on 11/30/2007, -20/+3Why won't they fix the ***** 18 glitch instead of trying to make Xbox Live into myspace then?
- smergs, on 11/30/2007, -1/+10They are fixing it. go back and read the full list.
- eastbeast314, on 11/30/2007, -1/+9They did. It's listed as: Added Support for User Graduation
- davidrools, on 11/30/2007, -1/+4does your mom know you're talking like that?
- tabledesk, on 11/30/2007, -1/+17There's nothing bad to say about the Xbox division. It's Windows development that doesn't listen to what people want.
- Myotis85, on 11/30/2007, -1/+2All we need now is more resolutions... 1440x900
- HBNDonut, on 12/01/2007, -0/+5Where is my multiple voice chat!? And I thought the update was supposed to remove XBLA demos from our gamercards...?
- gorilla, on 12/01/2007, -0/+2Sadly, no voice chat STILL. We have also been ripped off on the whole arcade part. Arcade demos played AFTER the update will no longer stay on gamertags, but old ones stay there still.
- FredFredrickson, on 12/01/2007, -0/+1I thought they said they were being deleted from the list, no matter what?
- joegibes, on 12/01/2007, -0/+1I don't get why you have to have your own Gamertag and Live account to talk online while playing at a friend's house... It's pretty dumb if you ask me.
- gorilla, on 12/01/2007, -0/+2Sadly, no voice chat STILL. We have also been ripped off on the whole arcade part. Arcade demos played AFTER the update will no longer stay on gamertags, but old ones stay there still.

- itsthebrod, on 12/01/2007, -0/+7He [Cypres0099] obviously said something about not having h264, skifreak107 pwned him saying it does, and Cypres0099 edited their comment in a futile attempt to look less stupid.

- santasing, on 11/30/2007, -17/+1If you are going GaGa over this long list of updates: you need to read this:
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/xbox-360/xbox-360-fall- ...
And yes, right out of the box, DivX support is broken. Its Microsoft, what do you expect. A bunch of marketing and long lists with little substance.- mattcoady, on 11/30/2007, -1/+13It's not broken. It's just says if your video has any additional functionality, such as built in menus, subtitles, etc... it may not be able to play. This is fine, the xbox isn't a pc and 99.9% of the divx files people encounter will not fit that situation. And as for anything older than divx 5, that was years ago. It'll be a rare sight to come across a divx movie you won't be able to play, and if you do, it's only 20 mins to reencode.
- davidrools, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2Hell even a PC has trouble with menus and subtitles in divx files
- santasing, on 11/30/2007, -2/+5From TFA, "The Xbox 360 will attempt to play these files, but does not support any of the additional functionality and in some cases will be unable to play the file."

- nirav72, on 11/30/2007, -0/+5Agreed. They added new features for H.264 in this update. So they might even add additional enhancements to DivX in future releases. Although most of the features are about not supporting menus, subtitles and older versions. I rarely seen menus in downloaded Divx videos. Big deal. This is a start and microsoft finally delivered!
- mazing, on 11/30/2007, -0/+11The real surprise is Xvid support.. most scene groups release in xvid, so divx alone would only be a small upgrade
- Muncher, on 12/01/2007, -0/+2As far as I'm aware, DivX and XviD are almost identical, so of it supports DivX it *has* to support XviD.
- Kier, on 12/01/2007, -0/+1My DivX DVD player plays Xvids no problem.
- Ezxen, on 12/01/2007, -0/+7I squealed like a girl when i read that im not going to lie
- Cypres0099, on 11/30/2007, -30/+13dig this down
- hoju7887, on 11/30/2007, -5/+89watching porn on my 360 just got SO much easier...
- synce, on 11/30/2007, -4/+61And you getting a real girl that much harder.
- thecurebr, on 11/30/2007, -11/+7Oh man, keep that for yourself.
- juicebag, on 12/01/2007, -0/+5YEAH DOOD PORN IS ICKY
- RazorElite, on 11/30/2007, -4/+39Can't wait! This update kicks ass and seems to be well worth the wait. Good job MS, for making the 360 so much better than it already is.
- hollismb, on 11/30/2007, -4/+20Yeah for DIVX! No new VGA resolutions are listed for those 16:10 folks though.
- moofree, on 11/30/2007, -2/+6I'm more worried about 4:3.
Come on 1280x960! - schoate09, on 11/30/2007, -0/+3Same with PS3, when's the 1080i going to get some love?
- V3NOM, on 11/30/2007, -0/+7Too bad about the VGA resolutions. I was really hoping for 1440x900, which is pretty much the most common mid-end widescreen resolution for PC monitors (mine included). The image resizing that my monitor does doesn't necessarily look BAD, but any owner of an LCD screen knows that it looks infinitely better at native resolution.
- aldenhg, on 11/30/2007, -0/+8I'd love to see 1680x1050. It's not all that uncommon a resolution anymore and deserves some more respect.
- moofree, on 11/30/2007, -2/+6I'm more worried about 4:3.
- Skunkhair, on 11/30/2007, -3/+96The 360 has now become the central hub of all my entertainment.
- donte, on 11/30/2007, -1/+23Which was *supposed* to be MS's intent of the 360 from its inception. Nice to see that they're slowly making good on that. Now if only they could keep the temperatures down and use dvd drives that don't sound like jet engines it really would be an ideal centralized media component.
- piper999, on 11/30/2007, -0/+19The DVD player in my 360 doesn't sound like a jet engine. It's more like a vacuum cleaner with a rubber band stuck in it.
- Nerfdude, on 11/30/2007, -0/+15mine sounds more like a woodchipper that somebody keeps feeding rebar and sacks of change.
- jwagsonnnn, on 12/01/2007, -0/+1thank you for giving me one of the healthiest laughs i've had today, ha.
- cwilson, on 11/30/2007, -0/+8I play my games so loud that I never even hear the Xbox... that's probably not good for the ears, but hey, explosions are awesome when they shake the room.
- Buckiller, on 11/30/2007, -2/+3Does anyone have a link to a really good guide on how to implement the 360 as a central hub for entertainment? The ones ive come across were too obscure.
- garf12, on 11/30/2007, -0/+7well if you have a media center PC there is nothing to it. Otherwise there are plenty of free media servers out there.
- ninjakoala, on 11/30/2007, -0/+8Basically: Either run Windows Media Center or install a couple of codecs and run Windows Media Player 11 or the Zune software.
It doesn't really take more than that. - g2g079, on 11/30/2007, -0/+6http://tversity.com works the best for me
- Ignignokt01, on 12/01/2007, -0/+1Yeah Tversity ***** rocks, imo its a lot better than media center.
- theojanke, on 11/30/2007, -0/+6I can finally retire my modded Xbox with XBMC.
- INHUMANITY, on 12/01/2007, -0/+2If this works out as expected the 360 will also be my central hub.
In my current setup I have my PC connected to my Vizio to playback video's. If the 360 can handle the DivX/Xvid content then I will no longer have the need to tether the two. - MagicCake, on 12/01/2007, -3/+1Interestingly, if this story had been about the PS3, and so too this comment, it probably would have gotten dugg down...
- rikwakefield, on 12/01/2007, -0/+3I suggest you shut up and carry on lining your house with tin foil.
- MagicCake, on 12/01/2007, -1/+1What the ***** are you talking about? What does tin foil have to do with a bunch of stupid, biased children? I was saying you're a bunch of ***** morons, nothing more.
- rikwakefield, on 12/02/2007, -0/+2The paranoia is getting to you. lol
- Christbait, on 12/01/2007, -0/+1Just... be quiet. So the Xbox 360 is more popular? Oh boo-hoo.
- MagicCake, on 12/01/2007, -1/+1What the ***** are you talking about? What does tin foil have to do with a bunch of stupid, biased children? I was saying you're a bunch of ***** morons, nothing more.

- bulgingbritches, on 11/30/2007, -1/+33Said many times before, worth repeating for joy: DIVX!!!!!!!!
- Sarawanan, on 11/30/2007, -24/+3Nice can't wait until it's out. Nothing spectacular though.
- c0dy, on 11/30/2007, -0/+10I agree, nothing spectacular if you were expecting it would make breakfast for you and wake you up in the morning...
- toxicityj, on 11/30/2007, -2/+112"Updated copyright dates for 2007" easily the best update on that list.
- blueZhift, on 11/30/2007, -4/+29This will probably spur sales of 120GB hard drive units too. The 20GB unit is getting a little tight!
- BoneheadFarker, on 11/30/2007, -7/+4Maybe, maybe not. For anyone that will run these as media players, they'll most likely buy the 20GB version and slap in a 1TB drive. Or just setup a NAS and stream to the 360.
- strictnein, on 11/30/2007, -2/+10Windows Media Center FTW?
- ninjakoala, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2I'm looking to get one for all the DLC coming on Marketplace (PSU: Ambition of the Illuminous, Shivering Isles, Tomb Raider: Anniversary). I *could* just keep one game around at any given time, but I don't feel like it.
The 20 gig served well till now, though.
- watership, on 11/30/2007, -0/+37Why use the harddrive. Share your computer drive over your network with your 360 and Stream everything you've got to it.
- chedabob, on 11/30/2007, -12/+2Why waste a buttload of energy leaving your PC on just to stream a video file?
- bigdoof, on 11/30/2007, -1/+22Because if you're a real nerd, it's probably already on anyway.
- itsthebrod, on 11/30/2007, -2/+23So you're one of those noobs who turns your computer off everytime you're not on it? I didn't think people like that actually existed...
- chedabob, on 11/30/2007, -9/+3Yes. I do my bit for the environment, and I save a tonne of money per month.
- itsthebrod, on 11/30/2007, -2/+3Well I don't. I have added convenience and less chance of transient failure for my computer's components.
- jerrycan, on 11/30/2007, -0/+9I have a box with about 1 tb worth of space and a bittorrent client on 24/7. I keep my tv shows and moveis shared up so I can watch on any computer in the hoouse or on my big screen with XBMC. The a PC in the kids room, a family PC in the Office upstairs, My wife's laptop in the bedroom. Laptop in the kithchen, 57" with XBMC in the mdeia room downstairs and my PC in my office.... Those systems are always hiiting the shares on my pc that's always on. I'm sure many other people do this too...
- eltair, on 11/30/2007, -0/+4If you enable Wake On LAN on your PC the Xbox 360 will turn on or wake up your computer for you.
- itsthebrod, on 11/30/2007, -0/+5Yep, and you can specifically tell the Windows Media Center Extender on the Xbox that if your PC is asleep/off, to turn it on when you want to stream stuff. Rather nifty.
- blackeagle613, on 11/30/2007, -1/+2i run folding @ home 24/7
- Shaflugi, on 11/30/2007, -1/+7Because you probably waste energy turning it on and off all day.
- chedabob, on 11/30/2007, -12/+2Why waste a buttload of energy leaving your PC on just to stream a video file?
- schoate09, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2Or, what I do, stream the media, use the 120 GB HDD for the massive game demos. Whenever a new demo hits, and I'm undecided on the others, I have plenty of room.
- BoneheadFarker, on 11/30/2007, -7/+4Maybe, maybe not. For anyone that will run these as media players, they'll most likely buy the 20GB version and slap in a 1TB drive. Or just setup a NAS and stream to the 360.
- Lonecow, on 11/30/2007, -12/+73Now that is how you update a system.
Sony and Nintendo need to take notes.- krische, on 11/30/2007, -17/+5Yes, because sony has never had substantial updates before.
- logicalnoise, on 11/30/2007, -3/+6well with one every couple weeks there bound to be something good in there.
- krische, on 11/30/2007, -8/+3I'm confused, are you implying that its bad for Sony to continuously update the console instead of just twice a year? I fail to see much of an advantage between them.
- logicalnoise, on 11/30/2007, -2/+6I'm saying that if you update every little thing all teh time you tend to screw up more and the updates become trival and expected. Every seasonal dash update for 360 has added something significant as well as hundreds of nice little fixes and additions. It just seems that more gets done with tehse big updates than what sony does with all it's little ones.
- krische, on 11/30/2007, -2/+3Although it seems like Microsoft is doing more, looks can be deceiving. There are still those few big updates that add significant functionality. For instance, the updates which added background downloading, DVD/PS2 upscaling, and DLNA were very significant. So in the end, Sony and Microsoft are pretty much equal in updating their consoles. Microsoft does 2 big updates a year, Sony does a few big updates with lots of little ones in between.
- schoate09, on 11/30/2007, -3/+5krische, you're forgetting that the PS3 updates are almost always bugfixes, very few NEW features on each one.
- krische, on 11/30/2007, -0/+5Yes, there are a lot of little updates here and there. However, there are also a few big updates with NEW features on them. For instance, background downloading, DVD/PS2 upscaling, DLNA, and the upgrades to Remote Play with the PS3.
- Lonecow, on 11/30/2007, -1/+6The thing I don't like about Sony's updates is the same thing I don't like about Firefox, or Adobe's updates, they spring them on you at random times, usually when you are in the middle of something and it just slows down whatever you are trying to do with their product. Just give me one big update that fixes stuff and gives me new features. I don't want a bunch of pointless updates every week.
Nintendo just needs to update, period. Adding a clock and limited keyboard functionality = nothing.- schoate09, on 11/30/2007, -4/+1Ah, but Nintendo games and the console itself have also been the most stable. In a console like the Wii, I don't want any new features that can cause more large problems than benefits. I'm quite happy with a few new channels now and then.
- xino, on 12/01/2007, -0/+1@schoate09 Are you saying that you think that Nintendo isn't capable of putting out lots of new features that do more good than harm?
- krische, on 11/30/2007, -8/+3I'm confused, are you implying that its bad for Sony to continuously update the console instead of just twice a year? I fail to see much of an advantage between them.
- logicalnoise, on 11/30/2007, -3/+6well with one every couple weeks there bound to be something good in there.
- IHaveCrayons, on 11/30/2007, -7/+11Sony already announced DivX before this.
- username9000, on 11/30/2007, -6/+12Who gives a *****? Is it out working on the PS3? Do friends lists even work on the PS3? Can you message people in game on the PS3?
- krische, on 11/30/2007, -4/+6No, Yes, Sort of. DivX is not out yet on the PS3, but neither is it on the Xbox until Dec. 4 that is. Friends list works and it has always worked since day one. Unless that list called "Friends" that has my friends on it and tells me if they are online and what game they are playing isn't a friends list. And you can receive messages while in a game (an icon pop-ups in the top right informing you), it is still not possible to use the XMB while in gameplay. I believe that is coming out in the next big firmware upgrade.
- IHaveCrayons, on 12/01/2007, -0/+2What do you mean who gives a *****? It's fanboy idiots like you that are retarded. The announcement was about what? Do you even know? DivX. What in the hell does any of the ***** you said have to do with DivX? Friendslist? Can you message people in game? The hell does that have to do with DivX? I can ask you the same question, is DivX out working on the 360?
- username9000, on 11/30/2007, -6/+12Who gives a *****? Is it out working on the PS3? Do friends lists even work on the PS3? Can you message people in game on the PS3?
- Nerfdude, on 11/30/2007, -8/+3what notes could nintendo take from this? i don't think a gamecube is going to make a very good entertainment platform.
- MagicCake, on 12/01/2007, -0/+3Sony's been updating the PSP/PS3 pretty frequently. New features are added all the time. Although they've made it so you need the latest version of the PSP firmware to connect to your PS3 via Remote Play, and that's bothering me since the custom firmware releases are always a few months behind...
- krische, on 11/30/2007, -17/+5Yes, because sony has never had substantial updates before.
- Shakermaker, on 11/30/2007, -12/+5Will this dashboard update only be for US customers or for international (Canadian?) customers?
/*crosses fingers* - please include Canada, please include Canada- LimeParrot, on 11/30/2007, -0/+12I'm pretty sure it's all xbox 360's. Australia always gets jipped by microsoft and even we get the fall updates simultaneously. I'm sure you Canadians will also get it on December 4th.
- moofree, on 11/30/2007, -0/+10Yes. US and Canada are the same region to the 360.
- Shakermaker, on 11/30/2007, -1/+6Yes but there is a ton of content unavailable on the 360 in Canada....just because we're the same "region" doesn't always mean that we get what the US gets!
:)- MiDri, on 11/30/2007, -2/+4That's up to publishers (for demos and stuff like that.)
- moofree, on 11/30/2007, -0/+4But since you can burn dashboard updates on your pc, even if it was released in the US before canada, you could still update.
Hence "same region".- xino, on 12/01/2007, -0/+1How do you do that? I know you can do that with the backwards compatibility updates, but didn't know that you could do that with the dashboard updates. Is it included with the backwards compatibility update that you can burn?

- answered my own question - wordfan, on 11/30/2007, -3/+42I never really wanted a 360 until now. DivX and Xvid - nice.
- hollismb, on 11/30/2007, -16/+1I see no Xvid. Am I missing something?
- moofree, on 11/30/2007, -1/+24Yes. Yes you are.
- hollismb, on 11/30/2007, -6/+3How so? I see .AVI, and I see divx, but I see no Xvid in the list. Granted, I'm not a codec master, but please explain.
- moofree, on 11/30/2007, -0/+18"What that basically means is that our users should find that most of their DivX and Xvid files will work because they're under that umbrella of the MPEG-4 Part 2 codec."
- chedabob, on 11/30/2007, -0/+10Xvid is pretty much Divx with a few added features. The underlying technology is almost identical (based off of one of the MPEG specifications).
- omgwthlol, on 11/30/2007, -0/+8yeah xvid should work unless they ***** up something
- moofree, on 11/30/2007, -1/+24Yes. Yes you are.

- watership, on 11/30/2007, -0/+21The big button controller is the big wireless SCENE IT! controller.
- McGrude, on 11/30/2007, -0/+10Right the big button controller (BBC)is an IR remote, so it is only "on" for the brief period when you actually press a button. It make no sense to have the "Turn off controller" option listed when your using a BBC.

- RdKetchup, on 11/30/2007, -1/+3You can stream from a linux box using uShare. It works great, even with a very old ultra slow linux box since it only streams the data.
From an XP box, you have two choices: Windows Media Player 11, or TVersity (a free program). - skifreak107, on 11/30/2007, -1/+3I was having issues with TVersity and I gave Winamp Remote/Orb a try, its worked so much better in my experience.
- bobbagoose, on 11/30/2007, -2/+25WOW, just wow! This is much, much more than I was anticipating. Thanks Microsoft, I am starting to think that my Xbox must be filled with tangible, real magic. Liquid magic if you will. Magic and dust.
- piper999, on 11/30/2007, -2/+7By 'Liquid Magic' you mean your semen don't you?
- FlyingSpaghetti, on 11/30/2007, -1/+6I take it your mother is a master magician?
- BooDaddy69, on 11/30/2007, -1/+2This by far is the best comment thread in this whole digg!

- FredFredrickson, on 11/30/2007, -1/+26They ought to put the Xbox 360 team in charge of the next Windows update... they seem to "get it" a bit more when it comes to understanding what the community wants, and what to deliver.
- blackhole82, on 11/30/2007, -0/+17Divx that's all I needed to hear.
- jerrycan, on 11/30/2007, -0/+30So, can you play DIVX/XVID movies off of a network share on another computer then? If so, it maybe time to retire my Xbox 1/XMBC and start "getting" those nice 720p movies now.....anyone?
- Blizaine, on 11/30/2007, -0/+13yes
- SmokeMeAKipper, on 11/30/2007, -0/+3If they update the software, tversity, connect360, WMP or Zune software.
- Nerfdude, on 11/30/2007, -4/+1....the original xbox/xbmc are fully capable of delivering 720p and 1080i.
- jerrycan, on 11/30/2007, -0/+4Every avi that is at 720p or higher that I try to play is a slide show. I'm playing it off of a share over a 100mbit line. How are you doing it? I know the Xbox can output 720p and 1080i, I just can get it playback an HD avi fast enough. HELP ME YODA!
- Nerfdude, on 11/30/2007, -2/+4make sure you've got the most recent version of xbmc.. the newest release is pretty robust.
- elint6, on 12/01/2007, -0/+3dude, nerfdude means the xbmc UPSCALES to 720p/1080i. It cannot play files that are natively encoded in 720p or above.
- jerrycan, on 12/03/2007, -0/+0Dude, I know that. Read OP.
- MagicCake, on 12/01/2007, -0/+1It scales, yeah, but the Xbox isn't fast enough to play native HD files.

- blackhole82, on 11/30/2007, -7/+1You can't just put any old hard drive in the 360. The 120 GB proprietary one is as high as it goes right now.

9. What are the different ways to play video content on Xbox 360?
You can play video from a USB 2.0 FAT32 removable drive, optical media, and by streaming from the Zune software, Windows Media Player 11, or Windows Home Server.- sinembarg0, on 11/30/2007, -1/+2FAT32 = PITA

- repdetect2, on 11/30/2007, -0/+5so the real question for me is, will it support DivX/Xvid AVI's with AC3 Surround. I can't seem to find a definitive answer...
- Blizaine, on 11/30/2007, -0/+8you may find your answer here. It's a lot more info about just the video portion of the update.
http://blogs.msdn.com/xboxteam/archive/2007/11/30/ ...- repdetect2, on 11/30/2007, -0/+3Thanks a reading I shall go...
- logicalnoise, on 11/30/2007, -0/+7the update adds mpeg 4 part2 and ac3 audio support so to sum it all up yes divx and xvids with ac3 should work fine.
- mlynch3261, on 11/30/2007, -0/+2Awesome that was one of my biggest complaints with tversity, it took an act of God to get it to work with AC3 encoded files.

- DarkGrim, on 11/30/2007, -3/+32$50 for a service like this? I think I'm getting my money's worth.
- aleclerc, on 11/30/2007, -7/+10Are you talking about your ISP fee? Otherwise you are sadly mistaken if you think you need to pay for this update.
- Blizaine, on 11/30/2007, -3/+29dashboard updates are free.
- exomni, on 11/30/2007, -1/+4I picked up a couple 12-month cards for $10 each yesterday.
I think I have XBL until 2011 right now, and I've paid, yeah, about $50.- lancert, on 11/30/2007, -0/+9Where'd you get the cards?
- Intangible360, on 11/30/2007, -0/+10He's saying that if there weren't gold members paying a live subscription fee this update would not be nearly as good as it is.
- tacroy, on 11/30/2007, -0/+15I think what he was getting at is that the paying subscribers are what make it worthwhile for MS to put dev time into these features.
- augmental, on 11/30/2007, -10/+11Just don't brick me this time!!!
Yours truly,
Xbox 360- FredFredrickson, on 11/30/2007, -5/+27Don't brick me, bro?
- radink360, on 11/30/2007, -4/+12no more transcoding porn!
- JEAH, on 11/30/2007, -5/+26too many possitive comments. can we please turn this into a fanboy showdow. I'll kick things off:
Take that Sony Fanboys! whachu gunna do?!! go watch a bluray movie!... JEAH!- SfOwnsLa, on 12/01/2007, -0/+1Well making fun of the PS3 is useless, they are also getting DivX support.
- Memnoch30, on 11/30/2007, -1/+17DivX and XviD holy *****! Thanks for making my (and my wife's) life so much easier!
- piper999, on 11/30/2007, -2/+27Those DivX movies helping you out in the bedroom?
- endlessoul, on 11/30/2007, -1/+4Bow chicka wow wow!
- piper999, on 11/30/2007, -2/+27Those DivX movies helping you out in the bedroom?
- ronnsprocket, on 11/30/2007, -0/+21***** christ, this is good news. I mean the 360 is undeniably the must have console now. now if they would just recognize my mac. connect360 needs to get it's ***** together with leopard. $20 of mine is just wasting away.
- ninjakoala, on 11/30/2007, -0/+5Connect360 is pretty great, but they've always been pretty slow at updating it, and compared to WMP 11/MCE you miss a couple of features :/ Good thing I have both platforms :)
- x252, on 11/30/2007, -4/+14I can't be the only one bummed to not see 16:10 on this list...
can people who play on Widescreen LCD Computer monitors not get some love too? :(- FredFredrickson, on 11/30/2007, -3/+5I have a 16:10 monitor, and the lack of support was slightly annoying at first... frankly though, I don't see much distortion using a 16:9 setting, so no worries.
- shredswithpiks, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1that's weird because mine looks like hell on 16:9 settings... :(
- augmental, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1No, you must go by a 50" Pio Kuro now.
- radink360, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1Nope, I posted my grief above about this.
- Psythik, on 12/01/2007, -0/+1If your LCD has a native resolution of 1680x1050, try setting your 360 to 1280x1024 widescreen, and set your monitor to stretch non-widescreen resolutions. If your monitor doesn't suck, you should see very small black bars on the top and bottom of your screen (should be exactly 13 horizontal pixels on each part). Since the horizontal pixel ratio will be 1:1, the image should look much better.
With that being said, I'm still pissed at MS for not including REAL 16:10 support.
