        "the penultimate chapter is so bad, just thinking about it puts a rotten taste in my mouth. It's the kind of level where, if playing through Halo 3 again, I might just stop once I reached it and not bother finishing the skirmish, much less the fight."
        "Let's get the Arbiter clear. He's the bad ass "Chief" of the Elites. He should be able to handle his own. In the campaign, the Arbiter and Master Chief are BFF. If you play alone, the AI takes control of the Arbiter and allows him to tag along. Enjoy watching your supposed equal getting shot in the face repeatedly and generally making himself utterly useless. What is the point of sticking you with an AI compatriot if all he's good at is respawning?"

        How could they give this game such a high rating with obvious pacing, AI, and campaign problems? Something's fishy here.

So many games aren't done as well as they could be, it's nice to have a few you know reflect the state of the art. I am sure Sony and Nintendo have things in the pipeline that will reflect their best efforts as well. In the end it's all good for us, the consumers.

      I can see his point, some people who pay full price for the game won't get to experience some of the goodness their money went to develop.

      Still, I mean, if you enjoy it, does it really matter if you never saw the "good" AI?

    • SuperSunny, on 10/10/2007, -2/+31You don't seem to understand how the Halo 3 Engine (Blam 3 I believe) works. I develop maps for Halo 1 and 2, and I've played around with the engines on both multiple times.

      They didn't sacrifice anything of that sort. The 360 can easily handle what the game shows, it's more of what the engine is capable of doing. Bungie doesn't aim for DirectX 10-Style super Parallax Mapping and crazy shader effects to eventually make things look a bit more like plastic. They aim for high quality lighting, and a strong developmental process. The game looks VERY good, in fact, quite realistic, as long as you don't compare it to the Unreal Engine and such. It's just very different, but it doesn't really lack graphically (except the Beta, but from what was announced, things have been fixed).

To me, this game looks better than say Gears of war or Rainbow six or other Unreal engine games. It seems that Halo's engine goes for much more realistic lighting and more environmental detail, whereas the others went for crazy colors and over-contrasted lighting. I guess what I'm saying is that to me, Halo 3's graphics aren't worse than other games on the platform, just DIFFERENT, and amazing as well.

They should be using some kind of terrain-specific LOD, like the cryengine 2. And where's the megatextures? I wonder what they're using the other cores for.
        Saying that, halo was never about graphics, it was about atmosphere, meaty weapons, simple-but-effective AI, good and consistent character design, and beautifully balanced multiplayer. I will definitely be buying it.

    I guess the article says it's made up for by replay functionality. The same replay functionality Bungie pioneered in Marathon 2 in 1995. 12 years ago.

    I can't say I expected anything different, really. The series goes far beyond the sum of its parts. The first had incredibly bad level design (library level!) and artificially removed online functionality (as MS prohibits online functionality outside Live, and Live wasn't ready yet). The second had possibly the worst ending a game could have, and the multiplayer is so simped-up that it's near impossible to miss with the fusion pistol.

    Oh, and the 3rd one isn't even done by anyone constituted Bungie in the old days (Jason Jones, the sole important member isn't the lead credit on the game, in fact I couldn't find him in the credits at all).

    Despite all this, most of the gaming community is beside themselves with anticipation for the 3rd installment. I mean, it's fine, no one is getting hurt by this, but it's really nonsensical, and as such you can't really expect the reviews of the game to follow the rules used to rate other games.

Every person was then sent a large bag containing the Halo 3 Xbox, Legendary Edition of the game, 2 Controllers in addition to the Xbox ones, Dogtags with their gamertags on it, and a whole bunch of other stuff.

      If you go to Bungie.net, you can see well over 1,000 people are playing online.

  • xdevit, on 10/10/2007, -7/+3Most of those sites are on a .5 system so it was either 9.0, 9.5 or 10. So if there is one little thing they didnt like it couldnt be a 10.0. I think the .5 system sucks.. but its easier on the review sites.. It has also been known that IGN is somewhat a Sony fan.

    I really don't think a lot of the scores matter its most likely going to go platinum at launch.

  • Aoki3, on 10/10/2007, -10/+8As a PC gamer, Halo 3 is a bit of both good and bad. The bad, of course, is that Halo doesn't really live up to the PC shooter scene in terms of graphics or gameplay (don't get me wrong, Halo 3 is good for consoles, but console shooters are a different breed than PC shooters). The good, though, is that Halo 3 is bringing some of the great aspects of PC gaming to consoles. Replays, map edits and customization are what make an online FPS have replay value.

        PC Shooters: Counter-Strike. Still the most popular online shooter in the world. Half-Life and it's sequel: best-selling FPS of all time, next to GoldenEye for N64. Call of Duty series: some of the greatest WWII multiplay around. BioShock for the PC: one of the most stunning graphical experiences I've ever witnessed.

        You've gotta a goddamn idiot to think that Halo could EVER top any of them.

  • DFENS, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1Anyone who's objective will admit it's simply Halo 2.5, and the ending sucks. Beat it on Legendary in 7.5 hours, and the only thing I got out of it in any form was achievment points. Incredibly unsatisfying.
