Do your loved ones want some video games for the holidays? Here's what you need to know. For new hardware, start off by checking out the Switch, PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. But if money's tight, consider picking up a Switch Lite, PS4 Slim or Xbox One S.

Are they interested in playing with a friend? Grab some extra Joy-Cons, a DualShock 4 or an Xbox One controller. And if online play is a must, you'll need a Switch Online, PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold membership.

As for the very best games, we've put together a list below of twelve top-notch choices for 2019.

'Pokémon Sword And Shield' (Switch)

This brand new release is the first mainline "Pokémon" game for the console/handheld hybrid that is the Nintendo Switch. Sure, "Pokémon: Let's Go" was a fun distraction, but this is the real deal with loads of new critters and quality of life improvements.

'Yoshi's Crafted World' (Switch)

The DIY aesthetic Nintendo uses for "Kirby" and "Yoshi" games has never looked better than it does here. Sure, it's designed to be something of a "My first platformer," but the visuals will draw in even cross-armed adults.

'Luigi's Mansion 3' (Switch)

Much like the GameCube and 3DS releases before, the third "Luigi's Mansion" title is a wildly enjoyable adventure game with some mildly spooky flavor. And with the addition of a… sticky ectoplasm buddy, this is a perfect co-op game for families.

'Untitled Goose Game' (Switch)

Have you ever wanted to live out a fantasy of being a trouble-making goose? "Untitled Goose Game" will let you hassle each and every member of this quaint town while you wreak havoc.

'Super Mario Maker 2' (Switch)

For those that grew up playing "Mario" platformers, "Super Mario Maker" holds a lot of appeal. Not only can you create your own levels, but you'll also have an unlimited supply of wild new challenges at the ready.

'Fire Emblem: Three Houses' (Switch)

Hands down, this is one of the most entertaining tactical RPGs ever made. Get to know the entire cast on a personal level, and fight side by side in nail-biting battles.

'Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order' (PS4/XBO/PC)

It's been a very long time since there's been a worthwhile single-player "Star Wars" game, but the folks at Respawn have nailed it with "Jedi: Fallen Order." By combining elements of "Titanfall," "Metroid Prime" and "Dark Souls" together, this impressive synthesis is engaging from tip to tail.

'Mortal Kombat 11' (PS4/XBO/Switch)

NetherRealm Studios continues to deliver some of the best modern fighting games in the world. "Mortal Kombat X" and "Injustice 2" were fantastic, but "MK11" is something special.

'Call of Duty: Modern Warfare' (PS4/XBO)

No, this isn't a remake of 2007's "Call of Duty 4," this is a brand new game that tells a different story in a modern military setting. After a few disappointing moments in this past generation, this is a COD that people can really sink their teeth into.

'Death Stranding' (PS4)

After a split with Konami, "Metal Gear" creator Hideo Kojima formed a team to build something entirely new. This post-apocalyptic package delivery game is very strange, but the absurdity and attention to detail make this game strand out from the crowd.

'The Outer Worlds' (PS4/XBO)

If your loved one likes the "Fallout" games, "The Outer Worlds" is a smart purchase. The folks who made "Fallout: New Vegas" have created an outstanding RPG in that vein, but without most of the baggage of that franchise.

'Control' (PS4/XBO)

Remember how cool the atmosphere of "Alan Wake" was? And in spite of its flaws, the powers from "Quantum Break" were really awesome too. Well, Remedy Entertainment has built upon their impressive previous work to make a science fiction shooter that absolutely should not be missed.
