Many users strongly oppose government equity stakes in OpenAI and other AI firms as taxpayer-funded nonsense that adds no value and risks dystopia, while others praise experts rejecting the idea outright.

Wow…this is a tell people. There is no path to profitability.

Absolutely brutal day for AI fantasies:

Nvidia $NVDA: down 6.2% Broadcom $AVGO: down 7.92% Coreweave $CRWV: down 7.07% Nebius $NBIS: down 12.27% Oracle $ORCL: down 9.59%

Worst of all?

OpenAI is rumored to be looking for government to invest, a huge sign of weakness.

Less than 24 hours after the S&P said no to fast-tracking, things are looking very different.

NOTUS is reporting that senior administration officials have held discussions with major AI labs - including OpenAI - about the possibility of those labs giving the government equity stakes by voluntarily ceding shares. The returns from those shares could eventually be directly distributed to American citizens through an AI dividend.

I see the idea of AI socialism is back in the news again today.

I’ll just reiterate what I’ve said here many times before: The idea of nationalizing AI – whether “hard” (complete govt ownership) or “soft” (equity stakes) nationalization – should be rejected in all its forms. It does not matter whether AI nationalization is being pitched by Bernie Sanders, national security hawks, or AI companies themselves – all flavors of AI socialism are poisonous and must be stopped.

Nationalizing AI, or even treating AI like a regulated monopoly or public utility, would have the same deleterious effects (and then some) that we have seen in countless other historical case studies. The entire history of nationalization and utility-style regulation is one of capture and cronyism, diminished innovation and consumer welfare, and censorial controls on speech in the case of information and communications technology (ICT) markets. Our nation would lose its competitive advantage in computation and algorithmic innovation if we took this disastrous path for AI. AI would become a Technology of Control instead of a Technology of Freedom.

Below you will find some journal articles and essays I’ve authored on the ugly history of soft nationalization and regulated utility economics and politics in the ICT policy world. We must not repeat this disastrous history with AI.

I’m against gov’t “taking”/ nationalizing AI labs / other AI biz - terrible slippery slope / crony capitalism etc. BUT I’m encouraging founders / companies to donate shares for the direct benefit of all citizens thru a pooled private acct or ideally in their @TrumpAccounts. 🇺🇸

These discussions with the White House, Bernie Sanders proposal, and OpenAI's proposed Public Wealth Fund all have one thing in common: they would deliver AI dividends or benefits only to American citizens.

One reason for this is obvious, at least two of these proposals would require action from Congress. Members of Congress - in theory - have a responsibility to their constituents, not to the citizens of other nations. Why would they vote for a structure that significantly dilutes the payout to American citizens by expanding eligibility globally?

Strangely absent from all of these conversations is Anthropic. In fact, according to the NOTUS report linked below, Anthropic, unlike the other labs, are not participating in discussions with the administration about government equity stakes.

Given Anthropic's ethos and culture, this absence does not make sense. I think the explanation is this; Anthropic are working internally on their own proposal, possibly including an attempt at an actual global dividend structure. And they will announce this proposal relatively soon.

Bernie Sanders has cited AI safety experts in arguing a partial turnover of equity is inadequate - what’s needed is the government controlling +50% of the AI giants

Bannon agrees:

Hard to think of a way the boards of these companies could justify this as advancing their (not just US focused) mission, or being fair to investors, the associated nonprofits etc.

I hope they push back, especially in the OAI case, since reportedly OAI first brought it up (!)

⚠️ The American public may be out to be fleeced. ⚠️

OpenAI, a deeply unethical company that was built on a series of lies, does not have a realistic road to profitability. And they reportedly want the USG government to rescue them But here’s the thing: Anthropic, Google, and others can readily fill the same niche.

Under no circumstances should the US bail them OpenAI.

Nor should taxpayers be forced to take a stake in them.

Having the government acquire shares of OpenAI or other AI giants would be an enormous shift

Altman is floating only a portion of shares

Idea would be to make OpenAI benefits more broadly felt while retaining control over the company

If Anthropic and OpenAI are both trying to go public this year, why not wait til they IPO and let Americans buy whatever stock they want?
