Total unemployment in the US is a useful statistic, but it's far from the only data point needed to understand how workers are holding up economically. Even if we're only concerned with unemployment, it's vital that we compare the unemployment rates in different sectors to get a clearer picture.

Redditor u/forensiceconomics put together a chart using data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, and it highlights the employment disparity in different industries as of March of 2024.

Key findings:

  • By far, the agriculture industry is in the worst shape with an unemployment rate of 7.1 percent.

  • Government workers, of all levels, have the lowest rate of unemployment with just 1.7 percent currently out of work.

  • In total, roughly 3.9 percent of workers are currently unemployed โ€” a far cry from the 14.8 percent we saw in the height of lockdown.
