Historic Disapproval: Bush Hits All-Time Low
abcnews.go.com — Just two presidents have had lower approval (Richard Nixon and Harry Truman) than President Bush, and none has had higher disapproval in polls since 1938.

- Newportbeachguy, on 10/01/2008, -2/+43Or I should.
- Dylson, on 10/01/2008, -1/+2Yes! LETS ALL GET DRUNK!
- fantasmacanino, on 10/01/2008, -16/+10What do you mean again? By the way he's been leading your country I would never he's drunk all the time (just hear him speak, he makes as much sense as a frat boy).
- natxavier, on 10/01/2008, -2/+2he IS a frat boy. do your homework :P
- NyteStarNyne, on 10/01/2008, -11/+5I feel bad for the relatives. The Bush legacy is ruined beyond repair. Didn't his niece have to change her last name for a clothing line or something?
- nick111, on 10/01/2008, -7/+15Umm... how you say...?
***** the relatives. The greedy and mean can look after themselves. They always do. - Caffeinate, on 10/01/2008, -1/+4The lines...they are getting wavy ::drink:: Fellow Americans, stop moving the lines, I want to snort them...
- nikhil1986, on 10/01/2008, -0/+9Well, irrespective of lineage, if my last name was Bush.. I would definitely not start a clothing line named Bush Clothing... could be misinterpreted, if you know what I mean. "Omg, I just bought a Bush dress today!"

- floorman56, on 10/01/2008, -15/+29And congress is STILL lower
- broncfan23, on 10/01/2008, -15/+10lol why does he get dugg down...again digg hates the truth.
The DEMOCRAT controlled congress has a 10% approval rating. - Caffeinate, on 10/01/2008, -3/+22Woot, Congress is lower than Bush, and they have a 51% Dem majority after a resounding 8 years of veto proof Republican majority and "the sky is falling" politics...ahaahhhaa
Oh wait. - MxM111, on 10/01/2008, -5/+24The reason why it is lower is because pro-republicans do not like democratic congress, and democrats can not do a thing becasue they do not have veto-proof majority, and most of the time republicans will not vote with democrats against Bush. So pro-democrats also do not like inability of congress to do things.
So, do not blame democrats only. Inability to compromise from both sides and the republican support of most Bush polices and Bush willing to veto everything that does not fit his strict ideology is also to blame. - rotundo, on 10/01/2008, -4/+14Well of course with a group of varied people there's something for everyone to disapprove of. Nobody can be totally happy with a large group of politicians from all over the spectrum. A "whole congress" approval rating makes little sense.
But to be a single person, and have such a low rating... well that is just pitiful. - SpacePoet, on 10/01/2008, -2/+8This little talking point was stupid the first time i heard it, now it's beyond pathetic.
- GeneralFault, on 10/01/2008, -3/+2SpacePoet,
I agree. This talking point was lame even when "we" were using it the other way around. It's just a weak argument one way or the other. Not to mention that the poster is lamely trying to excuse the failure of Bush by pointing out the failure of Congress. - renegadeafk, on 10/01/2008, -1/+2Congress has ALWAYS had lower approval ratings than presidents.

He's the president... he could ALWAYS have H, so he wouldn't be strung out, rather, he'd be nodding out.

i almost feel sorry for the guy, but how could i in light of what's happened? what's done is done.- nick111, on 10/01/2008, -4/+44Yea. Ok, let that feeling wash over you and pass.
Because for America to regain any shred of interntional credibility or self-respect, various members of the Bush administration, probably including Bush himself, need to stand trial for war-crimes.
If you don't do it, then someone else will under the same terms of Universal Jurisdiction which eventually got Pinochet extradited to Spain, and which prevent Kissinger from visiting France - he'd be arrested.
The Bush administration is without any reasonable doubt, guilty of torture and waging wars of aggression, illegal under the Geneva convention and the terms of Nuremburg. They need to face justice.
So um... don't feel sorry for him. He responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people. Feel sorry for them. - synack, on 10/01/2008, -3/+33I just wanted to say thank you, nick111, for your eloquent response. That is truly the fact of the matter. What astounds me is that when Clinton was in office he was IMPEACHED for diddling an intern and that was quite some news at the time. Here we are now with a president who has the blood of hundreds of thousands of innocent lives on his hands and the best we can do is lambast him on the internet?
I feel sorry for those who died by no fault of their own, but I also feel sorry for us. - seand, on 10/01/2008, -1/+15synack -
Clinton was impeached for lying under oath in regards to diddling an intern, not for the act of diddling the intern. Had he just said "yeah I diddled her, get over it" that would have been it (or damn well should have been).
Bush can't lie under oath if he is never sworn to oath during questioning. Pretty brilliant side-stepping if you ask me! - AndrewMoyer, on 10/01/2008, -1/+22The Clinton impeachment vs. the Bush non-impeachment just mirrors a very strange American cultural perspective:
* Nudity is WAY WORSE than violence. *
It's OK to have games like Grand Theft Auto where you are KILLING COPS endlessly, but don't show a nipple or it'll have to be taken off the shelves.
The Puritanical Corporate States of America. - rotundo, on 10/01/2008, -1/+11@seand - the real question to me is why the hell was he under oath and being asked about his sexual life at all? I mean, what the *****? That was probably the least important thing brewing in the world at that point, and the media and the republicans should be ashamed of themselves forever for distracting so many from real issues like the economy and international tensions.
- elhaf, on 10/01/2008, -1/+2The worst of it is, the sham impeachment of Clinton turned America off from impeachment of Bush. The public was perceived of as not wanting to go through that again.
- GeneralFault, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2rutondo,
I was about to reply with a history of how Clinton was forced to testify on this issue as a result of other allegations against him. But in the end, I just couldn't think of a way to put it that did not just scream out the question of why Bush hasn't been subjugated to the same treatment. You are right, Clinton should never have been required to testify under oath on this issue (an issue not of war, not of life and death, not even of government business) while still in office.
- nick111, on 10/01/2008, -4/+44Yea. Ok, let that feeling wash over you and pass.
- marc123, on 10/01/2008, -3/+2do you think he understands what it means?
- wrillo, on 10/01/2008, -4/+8come on guys, he is still a person. Of course he cares that over two hundred million people in the US think he is the greatest scum to ever live... and that doesn't even account for the rest of the world! BILLIONS of people think he is a ***** up!
... of course he cares- gooniegoogooz, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1we don't doubt he cares, but sadly he cares for his own reasons, like legacy and image. I believe that most people still feel, as I do, that he is ignorant to WHY people think he is a ***** up, by his own choosing.
- callinthelaw69, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1As if he ever has?
- snapcase, on 10/01/2008, -3/+4I doubt he'd care. And I'm willing to bet that 90% of the people digging this craptastic article didn't care to even skim the text. The title seems to imply it's about Bush's ratings. The article is mostly about opinion polls between McCain and Obama. It makes a bit of mention about how Bush's ratings are effecting the candidates.
People need to learn to click he god damn link rather than just digging anything that *seems* to bash bush. - DiggasWAttitude, on 10/01/2008, -1/+7“No one has given less of a ***** than Bush. If you was hanging from a cliff and all you needed was a ***** to save your life and George was at the top of the cliff with eleven ***** in his pocket and you asked him to give you one he would say ‘I don’t give a *****.’” - Chris Rock
- Chubaccatron, on 10/01/2008, -0/+4Bush does not care what the public thinks of him. He only wishes to be remembered as a man who did everything he could with the power and tools available to him to stop an enormous threat from ripping his country apart. (Read: Truman, Churchill, Galileo, Darwin, etc...). It's a inspiring ideal to reach for. Many do, some fail.
I'm not defending the man, but I will say that he has made his decisions and the only thing that can truly judge him now is the weight of history, which will no doubt take a more balanced view of the man before inevitably pushing him and his legacy into obscurity. For that is where we all must end, in obscurity, crushed under the weight of what and who must follow us.
Funny thing though, he wanted to save us from the Terrorists. However, we quickly figured out that the biggest threat to the American people -our real enemies- lie within the senate, and the house, within our own political parties, using you to retain power. As with every good thing that got ruined, it's always the most vocal idiots that everyone pays attention to.
And as it recently turned out on Sept. 29, when it comes down to the wire, these politicians are the ones that voted to stay in good public opinion, and so nothing was done. Because of public opinion, nothing was done when something HAS to be done. Where does this logic come from? Fear of not getting re-elected, fear of losing power. These people are elected to power to do what must be done to keep this country worth living in. Yet they are constantly worried about how they look. This is the same congress that passes non-binding resolutions when they could be making laws that help us become a better country... all for public opinion.
You see what i'm getting at, don't you?
- Newportbeachguy, on 10/01/2008, -6/+150Sir, you're implying he ever did care.
- minorsportsfan, on 10/01/2008, -12/+492Anything over zero is generous.
- brb1031, on 10/01/2008, -0/+9Well, he's at about 26%.
http://www.pollingreport.com/BushJob.htm
He consistently enjoys a negative net approval rating, I beleive this is unprecedented.
For a recent comparison, during his entire second term, even during his impeachment, Clinton always had a positive net approval:
http://www.pollingreport.com/clinton-.htm - thereisnostate, on 10/01/2008, -0/+29It makes one wonder why millions of Americans voted for Bush twice.
- scubaman5000, on 10/01/2008, -1/+36The same reasons they are voting for McCain and Palin.
I think the biggest reasons are fear and their church told them to. - MarshalBanana, on 10/01/2008, -1/+6I'm still wondering about the first time.
- scubaman5000, on 10/01/2008, -1/+36The same reasons they are voting for McCain and Palin.
- flossdaily, on 10/01/2008, -3/+4Republicans shouldn't be allowed to vote in this election. Seriously guys, let everyone else pick the next guy.
- Terasiel, on 10/01/2008, -0/+5As much as I'd love to see McCain come out of this with less than 20% of the vote... It's just anti-American to tell someone they can't vote. Even if they'd want the same done to you.
- hotpuck6, on 10/01/2008, -1/+9i'm amazed the people who are stupid enough to still support him have the brain capacity to contribute to these polls.
- brb1031, on 10/01/2008, -0/+9Well, he's at about 26%.
- spikyvashy, on 10/01/2008, -32/+26look at that face , he's a god dam monkey.
His father probably pretends he doesn't have a son- metapop, on 10/01/2008, -11/+24actually, i'm pretty confident his father is quite proud of him. GWB has played a significant role in breaking down the US's currency, ignored our national soverignty and opened the doors for the NAU to occur, has stripped the US of civil liberties and habeus corpus, and has pulled one of the greatest lies of all time, 9/11. All of these events have contributed towards the stated goal of his father (and grandfather), the new world order... how could they expect the NWO to succeed if the US was to remain intact?
- csw1342, on 10/01/2008, -2/+6Don't forget this little gem.

- aussiejan, on 10/01/2008, -14/+298Who are these people that are still supporting him? You're country is in tatters - wars, economy diving, divided like never before in history. Who is still cheering him on? What is wrong with them?
- SSPink, on 10/01/2008, -3/+145There are a certain number of hyper-partisan people who will support him simply because he is a republican, it won't matter if he starts eating babies or raping dogs, he'll always be their man as long as he's a republican.
There are also people (old people, for some reason) who will always support the president no matter who it is. People who believe you need to support the office even if you wouldn't support the person holding it.- antidense, on 10/01/2008, -0/+37>People who believe you need to support the office even if you wouldn't support the person holding it.
I wish those people would take a close read of the Declaration of Independence. - swr1ght, on 10/01/2008, -0/+22They wouldn't really have to make a close read. It is pretty obvious.
- sinrtb, on 10/01/2008, -0/+6@antidense: They did and voted against it.
- hotpuck6, on 10/01/2008, -2/+4Ah, good ol' WWII propaganda thinking!
GO Grandma! - Chubaccatron, on 10/01/2008, -6/+2SSPink, what you speak of is called loyalty. It's been an evolutionary net-positive trait for thousands of years. Then again, in a social context, free speech has not been.
- antidense, on 10/01/2008, -0/+37>People who believe you need to support the office even if you wouldn't support the person holding it.
- azbmr, on 10/01/2008, -3/+25There are also a few that put their heads in the sand. They find one crazy person with a monthly newsletter that supports their interpretation of how things "are." Then they just read that newsletter each month and ignore all other forms of "news" out there.
It is similar to all those Nazi sympathizers out there, but there's no pointing that out to them. - cdigioia, on 10/01/2008, -2/+15I've never liked Bush, but if you want the reasoning his few remaining supports have...
what SSPink said, plus:
1.) Some people still think the war was a good idea (unsure why)
2.) The economy for the most part hasn't been his fault (not for lack of trying though - & this new bill for the bailout...dear lord). Debt levels etc. are often the president's fault, but that's our kid's problem...The current economy of any president is usually largely out of their hands.
3.) The divided part I actually disagree with - I think there were many more divided instances in the 20th century (Vietnam era comes to mind)
So people have that reasoning, plus some sort of blindness/apathy/acceptance of the reduced civil liberties, costs of the Iraqi war, and the general fact that he's nowhere near intelligent enough to be president.
So there you have it.
Plus the extra crazy right-wingers who think anything bad must be the fault of the Jew-Commies.- kaelyiesta, on 10/01/2008, -0/+3Good point about this nation being divided. I've read enough US history to know how benign we have become as citizens. If you want divided read up on WW1. the 'hyphenates' weren't just politically ostracized, there were full on massacres during Wilsons administration.
- elhaf, on 10/01/2008, -0/+3That, and we did fight a civil war once, immediately after which the president was assassinated by a "true believer".
- Omsil98, on 10/01/2008, -1/+22Don't forget about the fundies who are hoping Bush brings about the end times...
- cshbell, on 10/01/2008, -1/+1Those people don't exist, actually. Bush belongs to the United Methodist Church, which is neither premillennialist (end times-focused) nor particularly conservative.

- yohnstoppable, on 10/01/2008, -1/+31Gotta love relatives with stupid political opinions. I'm originally from Texas, so I have a few old relatives down there. Their train of thought is a bit different than mine when it comes to politics.

I've lived here for 17 years and have literally *never* heard a white person here refer to blacks as "n****rs." I'm not saying it didn't happen, just amazed and dismayed.
Oh, and no, not all of Texas is a hell-hole - in before the trolls. - Quaterni0n, on 10/01/2008, -4/+8I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but your mom is a dumbass.
- rv361162, on 10/01/2008, -3/+7true texans actually keep their heads out of their asses and know about Ron Paul.
All other hardcore "republican" Texans who are out here supporting McCain just because he's "republican" are about to get a steer horn up their ass real quick.
Vote 3rd party or write in RP, the rest is a waste. Yes, that means your homeboy, Obama. - elhaf, on 10/01/2008, -2/+3I sent my mother in law a list of all the media outlets, including Karl Rove and Mitt Romney among other conservatives, who were calling out McCain for lying a couple of weeks ago, and she said they were biased. - troy1of2, on 10/01/2008, -1/+8Well, I hate to admit it but it's my in-laws. How or why I don't know but they still think the man has done a great job and often send me emails touting the virtues of his policies.

- SlowelyFadeAway, on 10/01/2008, -3/+19As much as we'd like to, we can't blame the economy crisis entirely on him. The downfall of the economy is the result of things that happened as far back as pre-WWI Wilson times, when the Fed took power of the money system.
- Folksie, on 10/01/2008, -0/+4I totally agree with that! Screw the Fed!
- SundayBrunch, on 10/01/2008, -4/+2no we can't, but why stop at "pre-WW1 Wilson times, when the fed took power of the money system." I says it was the dinosaurs. Or, Or, henry the 8th.

- sccrplyr40, on 10/01/2008, -0/+7I think the percentage for American Population who believe the sun revolves around the earth is about the same as his approval rating
- rhynost, on 10/01/2008, -1/+4I believe Palin's old Pastor threatened people with going to hell if they didn't support Bush. So thats a pretty good reason for the people who believe in that sort of thing.
- cgbspender, on 10/01/2008, -1/+8"Because else the terrists who hate us for our freedom win."
- Folksie, on 10/01/2008, -0/+3Hahah! That's why we need the Patriot Act, the Military Comissions Act, and the Homegrown terrorism prevention act - to save us from our freedom...I mean terrorists... whatever take your pharmaceuticals and shut up... while your at it - don't think either.
- pilgrim3970, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2kind of an exageration. Our country was in much worse shape during the Civil War. We haven't gotten to the point where states are talking succession.
- elhaf, on 10/01/2008, -0/+3Or even secession. But yeah, the economy sucked then, too, in addition to hundreds of thousands of all-American casualties. Oh yeah, but someone shot that president.
- motomike, on 10/01/2008, -0/+7Also keep in mind, given a large enough population, the normal distribution (in the statistical sense) shows that around 10% of those people will have IQs under 80. Which would account for almost half of his support right now.
- Infidelcastr0, on 10/01/2008, -3/+4We have these people called Republicans, jingoistic anti-intellectuals who are stuck in the 1800s and have been discredited repeatedly throughout history. They simply bury their heads in the sand if reality conflicts with their "principles" and use some asinine argument (often involving conspiracy theories) to distort the facts and blame someone else. (try asking one about the Great Depression). That, or they just try and change the subject to "family values" or "our enemies".
Whenever they cause a problem they say it's because we didn't take their ideas far enough, and if we could just get rid of more business regulations, kill more Muslims, or cut corporate taxes a little more, things will turn around and they will be vindicated. They see only in black and white and think it's "Communism" to expect employers to provide safe working conditions or tell banks they can't screw up our economy.
Many (not all) of them actively want to turn America into a christian theocracy and will vote accordingly despite all other issues, believing that no matter how badly we mess up the country or how many people die, when the ***** really hits the fan, all good Christians will disappear and go to heaven.- SundayBrunch, on 10/01/2008, -4/+2yeah, it's only the party that freed the slaves (radical reconstruction), and did most of the good things for the common man in america. Republican party, FYI, is the most principled party throughout history.
- Infidelcastr0, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2So by your logic we should vote today based on something a liberal republican did in the the 1860s?
- acebrickman, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1not all... good thing you CYA with those two words. You wouldn't have had these views if you lived in President Taft's time. Sorry our party's most vocal members right now are ***** crazy, just like those slave-lervin' Southern Dems of years past
- Infidelcastr0, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1:)
Yea I can't really say I would have had too much of problem with Taft.
Trust busting, expanding the post office and civil service, peaceful foreign policy...
Music to my ears.
I really hope all you sane conservatives can someday take over your party (or strengthen a 3rd party) Seems like there's some serious divisions starting to form in the GOP.
- justcharlie, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2There also exists a fairly large number of hyper-partisan Republicans who blame all of Bush's inadequacies on Democrats. In their eyes all of the blunders of Bush, as most people interpret it, are actually due to Democrats. By blunders I mean 9/11, the nose-diving economy, Katrina, Iraq, everything. Read a conservative website like www.frontpagemag.com to get an idea of what I'm talking about. Those are the kind of people who support him.
I'm not a Republican and I don't defend their positions, I just have exposure to them. - socalftw, on 10/01/2008, -0/+4Found them:

- SSPink, on 10/01/2008, -3/+145There are a certain number of hyper-partisan people who will support him simply because he is a republican, it won't matter if he starts eating babies or raping dogs, he'll always be their man as long as he's a republican.
- fyrescraps, on 10/01/2008, -46/+32I don't think he really cares who "disapproves" of him. The jerk holds more power rigth now that we even allow ourselves to acknowledge. If people weren't so busy with there grande lattes and BMW's, had they realized that they're dumping money into their material desires and putting themselves before the rest of American society and the economy, hence our current situation. Maybe we could have done something to get him out of office. He's still got until January, what makes us think that he'll just waltz on out and tell us how "great it was to be our president. This guy doesn't care about us he never has and he never will. Nobody in his entire family lineage cared about America. Historic my ass. The only part of history that has been made here is that we failed as a nation to get him out of office. Every time I hear what he has to say I just shake my head in disbelief. Lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lame ass jokes. Sneaky little SOB chuckles every time he manages to VOCALIZE his own contempt for this country.
"This would be much easier if it was a dictatorship. Especially if I was the dictator." - George W. Bush
With everything that has happened during his Overlord Regime or Monarchy if you want to call it. How is that we just sat in our chairs, or couches and watched him and his Oil Brigade destroy our beloved land? I love my country but fear my government. I personally believe that his tricks will continue until the day he leaves office (if he leaves office - I'll keep that portion of my thoughts out of this comment), and I'm positive that they will continue even after he leaves office. Hell, they may even get worse. He follows much more closely in the foot steps of good his ol' gran-dad Prescott Bush; The Nazi party major player more so than his father.
Bush doesn't give one iota of a thought towards what the people of America think of him. Every time we let him get away with passing secret laws., every time we here about new executive orders, he's sitting in his throne laughing inside at his own devious meanderings and realizes just how much power he has and we've given it to him. What sick little thoughts pass through his twisted mind? What is his plan for tomorrow, next week and the next 10 to 20 years?
I don't have to list the things that have happened as we are all very well aware of how hard the media works at ramming the propaganda down our throats. What will you do if our economy ceases to exist? Where will you go when YOU lose your home? What will you do when you lose your job and there isn't another job waiting to be gotten? Is that when you will finally stand up say "ENOUGH!" When is enough, enough and I don;y just mean that still with regards to Bush? When will you demand your freedom and the right to live a happy healthy life? Will you allow this country to fall? Will you stand up defend what's left of our constitution? or will you allow those that hold power and money to to send us into extreme national poverty, homelessness, and hysteria? If we haven't already; it is my belief that we are running out of time.
"It started in basements, and it started in sheds. It started in backyards, and it's hidden under beds. I turned on the TV don't believe what they say. we can't stay here now love but we can't get away." - Tom Morello "The Nightwatchman"
Will you grab your gun or will run for the hills? Will you revolt or join them? It's time to start making difficult choices that our generation has only so far read about in text books. We have brave men and women that have already made there choice to fight for our country and they are stuck in a country for reasons they don't know. Yet there are still those individuals among us that feel that we have to pay with our freedom and our lives. These individuals are still in this country and a part of a regime that will enforce a police state and destroy what ever sovereignty we still hold. These "sheep" are not to blame, they don't understand let alone know why they will commit crimes against there own people. Yet those that hold power will use them to control you and your family.
I don't care if this comment is read, buried, completely disregarded and thought of as just another rant. Nor does it matter if it is dugg, and admired, this is not my motive. I'm only writing this to be another voice if not A voice. A voice to ask the questions of a very true and possible reality that could erupt in our lives within a very short time from now. Give it your all. What-ever that may be. Do your best and push through until the end of this period in our lives. When all of this is over and we can start again take a deep breath and look at the hardships that we've overcome. Look at what they try to do and put us through and how we can and always will over come not as a nation or a culture. Not as a people that allowed there country to be overthrown by those that we ourselves elected to run our country but as those that believe in the simple in truth that we will survive. We will continue and will rebuild.

no one cares that his approval ranked the highest after an event like 9/11. Whats more telling is how he managed to take the highest approval rating and turn it into one of the lowest in history. - Ricemanstm, on 10/01/2008, -11/+2And while y'all LOVE to harp on Bush's approval ratings, YOUR DEMOCRATIC controlled CONGRESS ranks somewhere around 17%. SEVENTEEN PERCENT. Yeah, but forget that, let's just harp on Bush. Nit bots.

- metapop, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1not everyone is a democrat or republican. don't try to suggest that anyone who disapproves of bush is pleased with congress.
- mrsbrown333, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1One of the reasons Congress has such a low approval rating is because the Dems refuse to impeach Bush and hold him accountable for his crimes. Their approval would skyrocket if they did that.
- biotch, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1hah riceman..
Why are you an idiot?
Because all you can say is that its the democratic controlled congress which is the constantly parroted talking point by repubs. If you looked any deeper youd find that the Dems have about an 8.6 margin over repubs for the generic congressional poll. Meaning its the REPUBLICANS that are ***** up the approval rating more than the Dems. So either you arent thinking for yourself or you are purposely misleading people... both of which damages this nation during an election... either way... idiot.
And technically it isnt controlled by the dems at all. The repubs have broken the filibuster record and have upheld almost all of Bush's vetoes. They filibustered a vote on an Iraq withdrawal for one. Make no mistake the repubs are still in control of congress until either the dems have a veto proof majority or a slim minority with a dem in the executive branch.

You need to break free from the Republicrat matrix and stop auto-replying to the truth about Bush with assumptions about the person being a Democrat. You have forced your brain to require that anyone opposed to Bush must be a Democrat. Nevermind the TRUTH, just blame the other party. Democrats do it too. Look at the FACTS. "Hey, everyone in the US gets a million dollars. I have the winning lottery ticket in my hand" - If spoken by somebody who you may not like, but you certainly have to trust, you would be like "Hell yeah, I love this guy!"
He lied to a nation that was as patriotic as we have ever been and the nation foolishly listened and believed him. He turned that patriotism to cynicism for a good portion of the population. He turned a nation that was all standing up for their fellow citizens, willing to do whatever was needed, and made many of them feel like assholes for listening to and standing up for the man.
Yes, he had the highest approval rating afterward. But there comes a point when the lies catch up to you and when that happens 7 out of 10 people get pissed. "Give me control over a nation's currency and I care not who makes its laws."
-Mayer Amshel Rothschild, founder of Rothschild banking dynasty.
"I am a most unhappy man. I have unwittingly ruined my country. A great industrial nation is controlled by its system of credit. Our system of credit is concentrated. The growth of the nation, therefore, and all our activities are in the hands of a few men. We have come to be one of the worst ruled, one of the most completely controlled and dominated governments in the civilized world. No longer a government by free opinion, no longer a government by conviction and the vote of the majority, but a government by the opinion and duress of a small group of dominant men."
-President Woodrow Wilson, in regret of signing the Federal Reserve Act.- kaelyiesta, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2There are some historians who have started making some good arguments that many things Wilson was quoted for saying were never said. Many who closely surrounded him during his delusional reign as president twisted the truth to make him seem wise, despite his choices. Fleming has written a wealth of information backed up by factual evidence disproving many things he supposedly said(see 'Illusions of Victory'). While I agree with what that quote argues, I suspect one of Wilson's close friends(Colonel House, or Edith Wilson) fabricated that quote. Wilson never had an ounce of concern for the harm he caused, as long as he attained the power and glory he was after.
- didomi, on 10/01/2008, -0/+3Interesting. Even if someone fabricated his statements, that does not change the underlying of the Fed's power.
That will be interesting to research though. - kaelyiesta, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1@didomi, I can't be certain he didn't say this specific quote, I only can infer from what other quotes I do know were fabricated, that this was fabricated too. It has the same kind of 'I made a terrible decision but now I know I shouldn't have done it' retrospective feel to it that many of the others have. It smells just like the other quotes that his friends made up to try covering for his terrible decisions.
And I completely agree, whatever he said, the dangers of a centralized bank are clear. The framers of the constitution knew a thing or two about how much power those who stood to control our money would gain.

MOVE TO IRAQ OR AFGHANISTAN
Hear me out...
Bush is a lame duck now -- his approval ratings are at historic lows, lower than Whale *****. His agenda is seeing defeat in the US Congress, and polls show Americans overwhelmingly disagreeing with him on nearly every major issue.
This means YOU ARE PART OF A MINORITY in the United States.
Iraq and Afghanistan are "free and democratic" -- I've seen you people declare so a million times.
There are very few liberals in Iraq and Afghanistan, so you won't be bothered with the awful truth about BushCo's COLOSSAL failures.
On the other hand, Iraq and Afghanistan are chock full of fundamentalist religious whackos who should make you feel right at home.
Oh, and Iraq and Afghanistan are also chock full of terrorists, so you can actually FIGHT THEM, instead of sending other people's children to die or spewing opinions about "liberals."

We should deport people who have that vision for the U.S.and work to achieve it to Somalia. Why change the U.S. when that country meets GOP principles so completely. - jeffbw, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1Or perhaps the American facility at Guantanamo Bay. I'm told it's something of a paradise.

@johnk377y: I'm with you. I can only think of 1 major bill Bush has vetoed, and that was the ridiculous children's healthcare bill that would have expanded free healthcare to "children" up to age 25 and "poor" families making up to $80k in some states. Approval of "Congress" is of a vague institution, not an individual, so that's a bit of an apples to oranges comparison. I'd bet the approval ratings of individual members of Congress are double Bush's, about 50% or even higher, among their constituents. If their individual approval ratings averaged Bush's 27%, the turnover in Congress in Nov would be almost complete and beyond historic, and that ain't going to happen.

- awa64, on 10/01/2008, -2/+14If by "Democratic congress" you mean "51% Democrat 49% Republican Congress that can't overturn Presidential vetos," then I guess I'm proud of my choices--just disappointed by the choices made by my fellow countrymen who have prevented my choices from having any impact thanks to a lack of a veto-proof majority.
On the other hand, it HAS stopped the Bush administration from constantly being handed a blank check by Congress like they were before the 2006 election, so... yeah, I'd say it's an improvement. It may be disheartening to see Congress do nothing, and that rightly leads to low approval ratings, but... doing nothing is better than more Bush-enabling. - Mujokan, on 10/01/2008, -1/+2But everyone likes their own Congress representative. They just don't like that OTHER states get pork, and they don't like it that collectively they get nothing done because of veto battles and Senate battles.
Solution:
1. Vote Obama so there's no veto gridlock (no way in Hell next Congress will be GOP)
2. Get rid of everyone's stupid pork. Honestly, next time someone proposes a bridge to nowhere after what this bailout will cost (some version will get passed eventually, sorry) they should be tarred and feathered.- shauncorleone, on 10/01/2008, -0/+3Um, you think a Democrat Congress and Democrat President will signal an end to pork? But they didn't support it -- they criticized it severely. I think pork will be pretty radioactive from now on. Mmm... radioactive pork... - NonLeftistDiggr, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2pork spending is pennies in a barrel, get rid of social security, cut the military in half and let the rest of the world do more, now we are talking.
Oh, and if your priority is the government spending less money, obama is the worst choice followed very closely by McCain. CUTS - Mujokan, on 10/01/2008, -0/+0I was giving my opinion on why I think Congress is unpopular. I think lobbyists, special interests, pork, are part of the reason for the low approval rating.
Last I heard, Obama had less of a deficit than McCain in his platform, but I haven't checked lately. But anyway, try campaigning on scrapping social security and see how far you get... :

This is so full of spin it makes me want to throw up. There have been plenty of other presidents that were less popular and the article even it admits it and pretty much contradicts itself. Essentially they're saying: "Out of our 43 presidents, in the past 10 presidents Bush is the worse)."
You know who that more unpopular president was? Roosevelt. You know what party he belonged to? Democrat.- JoeMondo, on 10/01/2008, -1/+5Bush could never hope in his life to have the popularity, influence or legacy of FDR.
Just two presidents have had lower approval (Richard Nixon and Harry Truman) than President Bush, and none has had higher disapproval in polls since 1938. - BotchaMcCoola, on 10/01/2008, -1/+6He is the worst Republican in History. Stop trying to make light of it.

As for the 4% who couldn't care less I hope you are not symbolic of a voting block at the next election.
On a positive note SAT scores will go up, as through studying GWB presidency, children everywhere will have learned how to use the following words.
absurd, addled, anserine, asinine, beef-witted, beetle-headed, besotted, blockish, bovine, brainless, brutish, clod, cloddish, comatose, crass, cretinous, dazed, dense, dimwitted, dizzy, doltish, dopey, dull, dumb, dumbbell, dunce, fat-witted, fatuous, foolish, footless, foppish, hebetate, humdrum, idiot, idiotic, ignorant, imbecile, imbecilic, imperceptive, inane, inept, insensate, insensible, irrational, irresponsible, lethargic, loutish, meaningless, moron, moronic, oafish, obtuse, oscitant, pointless, prosaic, prosy, purblind, senseless, silly, simple, simpleton, slow, sluggish, stolid, stultifying, stupefied, torpid, undiscerning, uninspiring tame, unintelligent, unwise, vacuous, vapid, witless, worthless, apt, exciting, interesting, lively, sharp, shrewd, spirited
Thank you GWB for providing us a role model, who can be described with so many new words.
Hopefully we will not be "blessed" with a McCain / Palin win, I really like using the words above but there are only so many times that I want to have to say that a VP candidate is hebetudinous, anserine and vacuous.- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 10/02/2008, -0/+2It's just the low IQ contingent. Remember the majority of all human beings are average intelligence or less. This has always been the flaw of "mob rule" true democracy and why we have a republic of representatives. Unfortunately, the flip side of that is that the representatives make it easier for the wealthy to consolidate their influence in a way that they couldn't if power was distributed more broadly. So, the price of having representatives who are generally far better educated than the body politic and thus better to govern responsibly is that those men and women are required to remain immune to undue influence if they are really going to have the country and the people as their first, best responsibility.
The other two branches were designed to check and balance congress just in case. But Bushco gutted and politicized those and you've seen the results of their subverting the will of the Founding Fathers. :(

- CeeAyy, on 10/01/2008, -2/+3Here's the funny thing... It doesn't make him any better just because you can point to congress as having low ratings. He is a failed President. Again, the approval rating of congress has nothing to do with his failure as a president.
Actually, his approval rating is not all that important. His real legacy is what's really important. His approval ratings may be forgotten, but the economy and the war that he leaves behind will always be remembered.
There is not one reasonable person in this world who believes that the USA is in good shape. It is in worse shape in just about every way than when he took office. PERIOD. His ratings are just a reflection of how badly people feel about the horrible job he has done. Regardless of ratings... he has been a disaster for the USA and for the world.- matthewbot, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallacy_of_the_single ...

Congress' approval rating has dropped to around 10%. Seems like in a race to Zero, Congress is the sure winner.- Mujokan, on 10/01/2008, -3/+1People like their own representatives. Even if you lie about trying to pick up guys in an airport bathroom you are likely to keep your approval rating over 10%, and most are much higher.
What people don't like is pork (at least for other states) and gridlock. This last Congress has gotten almost nothing done due to Senate filibusters and Presidential vetoes.
There will doubtless be a Democratic House and Senate this year, though who knows if it'll be filibuster proof. But McCain is going to be vetoing every single beer that comes across his desk to make himself look like a maverick. At least if Obama is in they might get something done for a change.
(If you think it's better when Congress doesn't do anything, then you should love this past one dearly. But you would apparently be in the minority.)- zizzybaloobah, on 10/01/2008, -0/+5Actually for the most part, I do think it's better if Congress doesn't do anything. Don't we have enough laws on the books already?
They don't read (or even comprehend?) the legislation they do pass, and when it is passed, it's usually crafted to benefit the legislators' favorite lobby groups and it's full of earmarks and amendments that aren't even germane to the original intent of the proposal. - Mujokan, on 10/01/2008, -3/+0You should probably vote McCain for gridlock the
