How Barack Obama should have ended his speech last night. Since I mentioned The Matrix it's only fitting that end it with a quote from The Matrix.
"I know that you're afraid... you're afraid of us. You're afraid of change. I don't know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell you how it's going to begin. I'm going to hang up this phone, and then I'm going to show these people what you don't want them to see. I'm going to show them a world without you. A world without rules and controls, without borders or boundaries. A world where anything is possible." - hamobu, on 08/29/2008, -2/+2I did not hear the speech, but I read the transcript, so I must have missed the hypnotic effect that everyone is talking about.
The transcript of the speech though amazed me how little Obama said. He implied and hinted at a lot of things but he really did not say anything specific. He would say something like he wants to cut taxes on middle class, hire a lot of well paid teachers and balance the budget. Yeah, that's right he will decrease taxes, increase spending and budget will still end up being balanced. Apparently he has some magic budget balancing pixie dust.
Well he did say that he will go trough programs with fine tooth comb and cancel ones that do not work, and he will close tax loopholes that send jobs to china. Good thing we have all these programs we can cut and these evil loopholes we can close. I mean these things are just sitting there waiting to be cut and closed. How come nobody else saw the obvious.
And Barak did say that he wants to keep AK-47s out of hands of criminals. The real issue is about hand guns, and you can't buy fully automatic AK-47 anyways, but it is good to know that Barak wants to keep AK-47 out of hands of criminals.
Every statement in the speech is like that. Barak said NOTHING that you can hold him on. Even when he says that we need an army of well paid teachers. Well how many teachers do we need and how much should we pay them? As soon as he quotes a number, tradeofs, costs and downsides would become apparent. Mr. Obama does not want that, so he will keep his comments nebulous.
