Huge Voter Protection Effort To Be Launched Today
tpmelectioncentral.talkingpoin… — A group of civil rights lawyers is launching what it bills as the largest voter-protection effort in American history, planning to raise and spend millions of dollars to station hundreds of lawyers and thousands of volunteers at polling places across...

Digg it up.- NyteStarNyne, on 09/18/2008, -1/+9This is something I am definitely going to give a donation. There is too much riding on this election to have it controlled with BS tactics.
- richbleak, on 09/19/2008, -1/+6This is the most important aspect of this election. I hope this effort thrives.
- jmaica26, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3"This is the most important aspect of this election. I hope this effort thrives."
Definitely! ^_^
- algaeturd, on 09/18/2008, -13/+57Dugg down by republicans who don't want a fair election or fair campaigns. Palin bury brigade at the helm!!!
Seriously, if we can't get this on the front page...a basic story about how how important it is for the elections to be carried out with as little corruption as possible (see 2000 and 2004 elections) then all the arguing and bickering is for nothing anyway.- oneredeye, on 09/18/2008, -20/+4You mean Democrats who don't want a fair election or fair campaigns. Silly noob.
- Bith8654, on 09/18/2008, -2/+10Example?
- mrsteveman1, on 09/18/2008, -2/+8Yea because their tactics at stealing elections are just LEGENDARY
moron
- Shiftyeyedgoat, on 09/19/2008, -11/+5I'm going to bury both of you as partisan asshats.
Both sides are corrupt, both sides (have) cheated in the past, both sides (will) cheat in the future, or attempt to skim the line of legality as closely as possible to get an edge.
Maintaining voter integrity is an important issue despite your personal ideology.- fluxion, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3standing outside polling locations with a list of foreclosure lists is not a Democratic strategy. perhaps not out of a higher moral standing...it simply doesnt serve their purpose. but point still stands, the effort is, at least indirectly, in a large way opposition to a rather organized Republican effort to cull low-income voters from the polls.
there are genuine polling screw-ups as well that this addresses, not necessarilly tied to Republican efforts. but in the end, the only people who would digg something like this down are Republicans. since it's a given to assume at least some people have dugg this down, it is a fair characterization. there's no other reason to do so.

- MediaWeasel, on 09/18/2008, -3/+38Quote: "Goldman argued that his group's work was necessitated by the shabby state of America's disorganized and understaffed voting infrastructure -- which, he said, continues to get worse and not better."
"Goldman added that the group would also be taking on outright efforts to disenfranchise voters. For instance, we've seen recent allegations that the Michigan Republican Party is trying to prevent people on foreclosure lists from voting -- as well as efforts in Virginia to prevent college students from registering where they go to school."
It's a step in the right direction and fantastic that this is being met head on. Now the electronic voting machines have to be scrapped - anything hackable gets hacked. - Ajajadude, on 09/18/2008, -3/+27Who would've thought I'd be applauding the efforts of a bunch of lawyers?
Definitely a step in the right direction!- csw1342, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1Never won in court huh?
- Ajajadude, on 09/19/2008, -0/+4Never been.
- r00fus, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3Lawyers are key to a functioning judicial system. I wouldn't want to live in a country without lawyers... most of those are dictatorships or anarchy.
It's not just the lawyers, it's their clients (and the corruptible judges and politicians) that subvert justice.
- csw1342, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1Never won in court huh?
- Gemfinder, on 09/18/2008, -3/+32It's unconscionable that the Neocons would deny the right to vote of citizens who've been foreclosed upon, due to MARKET CONDITIONS THAT THEY CREATED.
Here in Oregon, even the homeless can vote. We simply put down as their address the street corners where they frequent.
This nation guarantees the right to vote for every citizen save felons who are still serving their sentences. It is the very basis of our system of government.
And I still say that Election Day should be a national holiday.- Aadain, on 09/18/2008, -1/+9I love the idea of Election Day being a holiday!!!! It would drive voter turn out since a lot of people wouldn't have go to work then! You good sir deserve a cookie :)
- Regoolian, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3Here in Australia where the prime minister can call the election at any time, it is always on a Saturday, Tuesday in November seems to be a rather archaic concept for the 21st Century.
- toetagger, on 09/19/2008, -0/+5It should be on a Saturday! White collar workers have no problem leaving work to go vote, hourly workers can't get away from their duties. Republicans don't want democracy! They would rather go back to the time when only land owners could vote.

- dw4prez, on 09/18/2008, -5/+9Acorn registered 72,000 new voters in our town of 400,000 including kids. As they have gone through some and have found 1,100 so far have been fraudulent. Last election they found a lady registering tens of thousands of kids to vote. And many others. On the radio we have been told to vote early because people are falsely claiming to be other people to vote more than once. It is sad that I need my ID to buy bread but not to protect my right to have my vote count.

you guys should be careful, but not at the expense of democracy. i get the impression from malkin that she is paranoid about people voting. but that's exactly the part of our system that we have to ensure everyone has access to. there's no way to ensure people can't register fake cards when you're in the field.

- uncleosbert, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3why do you think it is worse? do you read these articles you post? almost none of these articles relate to what you claimed!
from your first article, we see that the officials aren't even worried about the fraudulent cards: "Toulouse Oliver says problem registrations don't make it to the voter rolls. "
your second article is the same story as your first: 1,100 suspect registrations in bernalillo county.
your third article is exactly the same one you've shown me twice: "The Bernalillo county clerk says she may have 1,100 cases of voter fraud already. She says some cards that were turned in have the same name as a voter who's already registered."
your fourth article (huffpo) is about voters who may be denied their right to vote because of foreclosure (by republicans no less!), not fraudulent registrations.
your abc article is also about the foreclosures (another repeat).
your mercury article (6) is just about how people should vote despite their fears... which is not anything like what you're saying.
your seventh article is barack obama's speech about the federal reserve... did you not think i would look at all of these?
http://blogs.suntimes.com/sweet/2008/09/obama_call ...
number eight is about voting machine problems.
with number nine you repeat the story about republicans blocking poor people from voting...
10 is about how inadequate our voting infrastructure is... which i totally agree with. still not anything like what you said.
hey, now (#11) we're back in new mexico... "The Bernalillo County clerk has notified prosecutors that some 1,100 possibly fraudulent voter registration cards have been turned in to her office."
number 12 is a message from colorado officials telling people to vote early so the nation doesn't have to stay up all night for results.
13, bernalillo AGAIN!!
and fourteen is the same story from bernalillo, and some of the michelle malkin blogpost i posted earlier!

- iloveobama, on 09/18/2008, -11/+5We need to destroy the REPUBLICAN HATE MACHINE. Obama is our leader and will accomplish this, just like he's accomplished so much in his life. He cleaned a lot of washington up as a senator and will do the same as president. We need to tax the rich and give that money to the poor, we need to DIVERSIFY our country with all types of people just like the racist republicans are trying to prevent, we need to give undocumented illegal immigrants citizenship, and most important we need government universal healthcare because all Americans deserve healthcare!!! Look up Obama's foreign policy advisor to be. Zbigniew Brezeznski - the dude practically invented Al-Queda to fight the Russians. And you think the Georgia/Russia conflict was bad...just wait.
His wife is on the CFR, and there is a video of him making a joke that he somehow, "forgot hit membership card" to the CFR at a public forum.
These are facts - not a judgement by my part so don't think I'm bashing Obama. There is no change but that which is rhetoric coming from the Obama campaign. - tykwondingo, on 09/18/2008, -2/+2Obama sucks just slightly less than McCain. Ugh, stuck voting for the lesser of two evils yet again...
- Bith8654, on 09/19/2008, -2/+3All Americans "deserve" healthcare, but your naive in your faith in universal health care. My grandpa had cancer in Canada, it was bad enough to eventually kill him. When he got a doctor's appointment the best he could get was 6 months later. Every time he had an actual appointment, he would regularly sit in the waiting room for 6+ hours waiting to be called. And that's someone who has a life-threatening condition.
This is all because since the government pays for the health care, they cap the amount a doctor is allowed to charge, drastically lowering their salaries. As a result, less people go through the long, expensive years of medical school, and more doctors move out of the country into one that pays better.
Honestly I won't be surprised if I'm buried by people that just want to believe soooo badly that universal health care is the simple solution to all our medical problems, but if you people could at least provide some intelligent arguments as to how I'm wrong and how universal health care will be better in this country than it is in any other that would be great. - truck87bp, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1I have not heard Barry say anything about Voting Reform.

- JenniferInMO, on 09/20/2008, -0/+3Yeah. That is the party line. TRANSLATION: I want my vote protected while preventing those without a driver's license or the ability to get a government issued ID from voting. Good boy.
- magus_melchior, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1@limeaid: In addition to Jennifer's points, that requirement can be used to disenfranchise someone who's had their license suspended or revoked.
It's a nice idea in theory, but it opens too many cans of worms. Never fall in love with simple solutions to complex problems.
- paintgrl, on 09/19/2008, -1/+13Thank you God!! All this voter caging is getting disgusting.
FTA: Goldman added that the group would also be taking on outright efforts to disenfranchise voters. For instance, we've seen recent allegations that the Michigan Republican Party is trying to prevent people on foreclosure lists from voting -- as well as efforts in Virginia to prevent college students from registering where they go to school.
"I think that if past elections are any indication, we'll see more of this in various different forms," Goldman said. "We're already seeing it now." - sheetrock, on 09/19/2008, -1/+15I don't know how much of this stuff is going on this year, but there's a lot of damage that can be done before we even get to the polls...
Registration forms of one party being destroyed:
http://www.baltimorechronicle.com/070505Miller-Irm ...
Too few voting machines available, in a rather strange pattern of districts:

Felons, ex-felons, and people who have felon-like names can't vote, also in a rather strange pattern:
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/07/10/national/10flori ...
But by all means, keep carping about how photo IDs are necessary to ensure the sanctity of the vote. It's just another vote suppression tactic, and if you want to change my mind on this show me solid evidence that not requiring them has created a problem on the level of any of the above examples I've just given.
It looks like more fun is to be had this election as well:

I really do believe IDs should be required to vote. However, gaining an ID should not be used as an artificial barrier to disenfranchise voters. A driver's licenseshould be perfectly acceptable. For those that don't drive, or cannot afford the fee? One simple way would be to guarantee a state-issued ID card to any resident for free - which means that there is now no "poll tax".- r00fus, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3@rworne,
Your view is legitimate, but often efforts to "legitimize" voters aren't matched with making IDs more available. That's what happened in Indiana, and many other states are considering similar laws.
I'd agree with the following, for example:
1) Make IDs required for voting two years after date. 2) Make IDs free (every year or so) for anyone one year after date. 3) Spend government money to ensure everyone gets IDs by having programs to get homeless and other people IDs.
Of course, the folks who are really interested (ie, spending money and influencing politicians) in restricting voting to ID'd voters, would never accept such an effort. - JenniferInMO, on 09/20/2008, -0/+3I agree with your reasoning, but there are still problems. When the Fed required the states to see original birth certificates to renew drivers' licenses my husband had to send away for his (because we don't live in the state where he was born). It cost $36 to get a copy and we waited 6 weeks for it to arrive in the mail ($50 more if you want it "rushed" which still took several weeks for "processing"). To someone on a fixed income without Internet access it would be extremely difficult and expensive just to get a birth certificate, then it requires a trip to the license bureau which is difficult for disabled people, the elderly and those who don't drive. Keep in mind that the Fed has the same identification rules for all government IDs as for drivers' licenses.
The incidents of voter fraud (i.e. someone who tries to illegally vote) are extremely rare. Voter fraud and and disenfranchisement efforts have been widespread in the past few elections. These state laws in connection with the Fed. ID requirements are a concerted effort to disenfranchise people who would most likely vote Democrat.

There are also civil rights attorneys who will be dispatched to various locations if an issue arises. They will get their call from the hotline screeners.

- SatoriSeeker, on 09/19/2008, -0/+4You watch too much Bill O'Reilly. Go research cases of voter fraud from double voting. You'll find it's on the order 30 or so people. Go research cases of voter disenfranchisement - you'll find its over 1 million people.
ACORN does nothing you've just said, you're buying propaganda hook line and sinker. - JenniferInMO, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2ACORN is an excellent organization and does wonderful community work around the country. To be fair they had some widespread overzealousness going on in 2003 which resulted in many fraudulent registrations. It was not high up, rather it was overzealous people at the local and street level. There was a big to-do and some people even received jail sentences. Since then they have changed procedures and they know they will always be scrutinized. They have not had any problems since, even with the heightened scrutiny.

- EllipsisAeon, on 09/19/2008, -0/+7It does not make a flying F! if you are a Democrat or a Republican, your vote should count...and only once!
There has been voter fraud since this country began, and it will continue as long as there are elections. That said, no dead voters, no double/triple votes and do even try and ***** with me when I go to vote!
If a bunch of liberal lawyers want to stand around all day and make sure people aren't being F! when they try to vote, GOOD.
If a bunch of conservative nut jobs want to scour every name and person to make sure there is only one legit vote per citizen, GOOD.
This isn't about one side or another. This is about our fundamental right to vote.- talmand, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I actually managed to get through all the liberal drivel that only Republicans commit voter fraud to get to your post. It was refreshing to see such an honest post on Digg.
Voter fraud is committed by several different groups across this nation. Just because there is one county with fraud doesn't mean that all counties have the same fraud by the same people. As long as people are not willing to admit that voter fraud is a UNIVERSAL problem then it will never go away.
Grow up people!
- talmand, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2Thank you, thank you, thank you.
- gsxraddict, on 09/19/2008, -4/+2we need this, but too little too late. Ron Paul is out
- meechmouse, on 09/19/2008, -2/+2Haven't we learned anything that if someone does something dishonest to be President, they probably think that they are not qualified in the first place. This is a great thing in that there are people who are legitimately registered to vote and recounts allow for mistakes to be made. We can't keep taking what these people dish out to us. The voting system is not secure and McCain/Palin has proven that they will do anything, including lie, to get to the helm of our government. We are not being smart. We have enfranchised millions of African Americans and now because the GOP is afraid that maybe we've had enough of the same and are actually using our votes to make a difference. Read 'em and weep. Obama '08
- kreatre2007, on 09/19/2008, -2/+2Oh this will be just great. So, if Obama loses, these lawyers will quibble and haggle over the results and maneuver to make sure that Obama turns out to be the winner. What's really going to happen here is that no votes are going to be "protected" instead, these lawyers will find any way that they can to get votes accepted that were not eligible in the first place... illegal aliens, dead people, felons, etc. Just watch. I'm right about this.
- JenniferInMO, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2Show me a case where widespread voter fraud was proved. While there have been cases here and there, these stories of illegal aliens, dead people, felons who aren't supposed to vote were proved to have cast votes. By the way felons CAN vote in most states if they serve their sentence and apply to have their rights reinstated.
I will be waiting for a response from you for a long time, because in the past few decades our process has been pretty good in keeping out voter fraud. ELECTION FRAUD, a systematic process is a problem and it has been the GOP which has had its hand caught in the cookie jar. Doesn't matter which party it is. Election fraud needs to be eliminated. - magus_melchior, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1@kreatre2007: You'll find more instances of funny vote totals in districts that went Republican, especially Cuyahoga County in Ohio.
Hacking Democracy demonstrated how easy it was to monkey with vote tallies from a PES machine-- and I somehow doubt that they re-engineered the devices to close this vulnerability.

- DiogenesJr, on 09/19/2008, -5/+2"Goldman added that the group would also be taking on outright efforts to disenfranchise voters. For instance, we've seen recent allegations that the Michigan Republican Party is trying to prevent people on foreclosure lists from voting -- as well as efforts in Virginia to prevent college students from registering where they go to school."
Sources? Anyone? Seriously, you guys are getting desperate and it's hilarious. Funny how there was no ranting about voter fraud in '06 when the Democratic Peoples Workers party took both houses of congress. Nor was there much speculation in the runnup when it became fairly obvious that the left was going to win.
You've lost. Get over it. Next time don't nominate a black man just for the sake of doing so. Make sure he is capable of doing the job first.- jackieblu, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3Obama's very capable and intelligent, I'm sure that threatens people like you. It's the GOP that's desperate, and afraid that they are going to lose, especially if they can't cheat as usual.

- jackieblu, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3Republicans are getting ugly, God don't like ugly! The GOP have good reason to freak out about this because most, if not all ,voter fraud
has been traced back to them, it's usually the only way they can win. Self righteous ,hypocrites, & liars from McPalin on down the line...
Obama Rocks !!! We need an intelligent President for a change, gee, what a novel concept... - OddMoniker, on 09/19/2008, -1/+3THANK GOD!
I don't care who you plan to vote for (well, maybe I do)...EVERYONE has the right to vote. But don't forget to register...NOW!
NOW!!! - Barackalypse, on 09/19/2008, -2/+2How about they protect MY vote by making sure people who aren't supposed to be voting, or are trying to vote more than once, or are trying to vote in a County they don't live in, aren't allowed to?
- Matricul8tr, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3Just which citizens do you deem unworthy to vote?
- cjschreiber, on 09/19/2008, -1/+1The non-citizens, and those not registered to vote.
- ironhide, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1any evidence that is happening?
- JenniferInMO, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2There have only been a handful of verified cases of voter fraud (where a voter tries to vote when s/he shouldn't or vote twice). It is these systematic cases of election fraud which has been a problem on a grand scale for the past 8 years.
- Matricul8tr, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3Just which citizens do you deem unworthy to vote?
- Matricul8tr, on 09/19/2008, -1/+2This is why I'm an EX-Republican...Reason for me to never vote Republican again...ever. Might as well toss out the other socialist party too, you know, the Democrats. In fact I'll vote strict Libertarian from now on.
- pepps, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1Good Idea, don't be pushed around anymore people !
- bondud, on 09/19/2008, -2/+0You are all kidding right? The only people PROVED cheating are the Democrats. Dead people and children can't vote.
- JenniferInMO, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2While there have been cases on the local level of election fraud in small races it was the GOP which got caught in the past 2 presidential elections. All parties should be held to the strictest standards. Please give me one credible source which shows that the DNC is guilty of election fraud in modern times.
- BadgerDigger, on 09/19/2008, -1/+2Wisconsin voters need protection.
1. You can register at the polls with just a utility bill. You don't even have to prove that you are the person who's name is on the utility bill.
2. To vote, all you need to do is give the poll worker a valid name on the list. The only fraud check is that the name given isn't marked as voted already.
Those two things add up to massive vote fraud. They also add up to something needing to be done to protect the process. - jayzDigga, on 09/19/2008, -1/+1So the brown shirts now wear suits and ties. Great.
