McCain pulling out of Michigan
politico.com — John McCain is pulling out of Michigan, according to two Republicans, a stunning move a month away from Election Day that indicates the difficulty Republicans are having in finding blue states to put in play. A McCain event planned for next week in Plymouth, Michiigan, has been canceled.

kg37, a typical douche bag that has been brainwashed by the message of change.- kg37, on 10/02/2008, -3/+107I've got news for you: The Republican party of today is a far cry from the one that rose to power in 1860. One might even say that it stands for the diametric opposite principles, especially socially. You can keep fooling yourself, though.
- apec766, on 10/02/2008, -1/+62I was a republican who denoucned being so because of jackassery of the party as they lied to themselves. Don't you dare compare the likes of former republicans to what is called a "republican" today.
- trotskyist, on 10/02/2008, -1/+49On top of what's already been said, what does Abraham Lincoln's party affiliation have to do at all with the analogy given?
- IphtashuFitz, on 10/02/2008, -2/+50And learn the difference between "your" and "you're" while you're at it.

- mrsteveman1, on 10/02/2008, -1/+11"Republican" is a brand name now, not a party.
A number of interest groups have bought or stolen influence over the government by using this brand name, and the idiots who cling to voting for republicans because of the name are the ones who have been brainwashed. - altgeeky1, on 10/02/2008, -2/+18DO you see the irony of insulting kg37's intelligence, when you can not even spell "you're"?
It's a contraction of "you are", NOT a form of the possessive.
PS - Since you like to cite Lincoln, you should actually READ MORE on him.
During Lincoln's time, the Republicans WERE the Liberals and the Democrat-Republicans were the conservatives. Lincoln did well in todays "blue" states, and poorly in today's "red" states, where slavery still reigned.
In other words, parties were the exact opposite as they are today, but the colors of the states have not changed much..
Both parties had strong liberal and conservative wings until the Voting Rights Act, which the Republicans opposed. Since then, the country has been polarized.
(The solution to polarization and gridlock of course is to abolish the Electoral College, and require a runoff election when there's no solid majority for President. This would allow a third party to really exist, and force both the Republicans and Democrats to focus on the problems of the shrinking middle class). - richardstaboner, on 10/02/2008, -0/+8People still support Palin/McCain?! sheesh...

- Wuped, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3"reaks of nothing but failure" would sound really weird.
- richirwin, on 10/02/2008, -1/+27McCain may as well pull out of Pennsylvania as well. It's over there too.
The real shockers are Virginia and North Carolina - both republican strongholds, McCain is on the verge of failing to retain.
Florida and Ohio - All but in Obama's pocket.
This may very well turn into an Obama landslide before it's over.- EatSleepJeep, on 10/02/2008, -2/+17God willing.
- mrsteveman1, on 10/02/2008, -5/+6Honestly that would concern me. After all the recent events with election fraud, incompetence, and corruption, for one candidate (especially a democrat) to suddenly crush the party that has held such power for the last ~10 years (congress and bush), makes me step back a bit and wonder about things.
Surely if these people were (if, mind you) capable of stealing an election in the past, why not steal this one? Is McCain really the continuation of these interests? If so i would expect them to influence this election in his favor as well. If not, then who is?
The one thing that is clear, is that the voting process in the U.S is nothing close to democratic at the moment, so i have a hard time believing that simply because people are going to go out and vote in large numbers, and because polls indicate things swinging one direction, that this is what will actual outcome will be. - fasda, on 10/02/2008, -5/+2Cylon God willing* fixed
- byobyob, on 10/03/2008, -0/+4@mrsteveman1:
Pretty sure both are "the continuation of these interests". If you want real democracy get rid of the parties*.
* that said, given that the chance of a 3rd party winning might as well be zero, you're probably better off voting for Obama since McCain is a part of the party that tore up the constitution and has promised to do more tearing if he gets into office...
- KillsTheWeak, on 10/02/2008, -15/+3Calling yourself republican or democrat is yet another way to limit your own thinking. It's like calling yourself gay/straight, punk/preppy, Christian/Satanic, Coke/Crystal Pepsi :P Just cause you agree with a majority of someone in that group, don't mean you should slap a label on yourself. Cause than you look like an idiot when someone in that group goes against what you believe. This is American we are suppose to be free, we should all be Independents. On subject tho, John McCain is an ***** senile old windbag, he should be in a nursing home. Atleast in there they'd believe his lies, as they are old people, they all tell stories. And Obama is a traitor, voting yes on the bailout, and wants to send people into Iran. ***** that, don't any of these ***** listen. We don't want war and we want the money to go to us, not Warstreet (as McCain says). Oh and btw, if your President, shouldn't you have the ability to pronounce Washington and Wallstreet properly?

Obama/Biden!!- sugarazor, on 10/02/2008, -1/+11While I'm all for Obama, I don't think McCain calling it quits in Michigan is really much to parade about. The fact that McCain even had a chance in Michigan - a solid blue state in the last four elections - was a bit concerning. It's also frightening that Minnesota is as close as it is - it's the ONLY state that Democrats have carried in every election since 1976.
- sulthernao, on 10/02/2008, -1/+12Michigan went to Gore by 5% and Kerry by 3%. Obama is out polling both of them. Minnesota went to Gore by 3% and Kerry by 4%. Obama is out polling both of them. Obama is up by 5% in Wisconsin, a state that Gore won by 5,000 votes (.2%) and Kerry won by 11,000 votes (.4%). Oh, and just because Minnesota was the only state Mondale won, doesn't make it a deep blue as it once was. For the same reasons, Virginia is no longer a state that Bush won by 10% in 2000 and 2004. Same with North Carolina. Indiana isn't a state that Bush won by 20%.
- sugarazor, on 10/02/2008, -0/+7All fair points.
- magus_melchior, on 10/02/2008, -0/+5McCain may have left, but there's still the Republican Party of Michigan to contend with. Don't forget that it wasn't Bush's campaign alone that flipped Ohio on technical error.

- pennsykid2000, on 10/02/2008, -15/+267McCain Losing Core Supporters
WASHINGTON, September 29 – John McCain appears to be losing support among a key group of voters who had hitherto stood firmly with him and Governor Palin, even as his poll numbers among other groups fell dramatically.
A new Gallup poll shows that, for the first time, McCain's approval rating has fallen below 70% among total ***** morons, and now stands at 64%. This represents a dramatic drop compared to a poll taken just last July, when 92% of total ***** morons expressed support for McCain and his policies.
Faltering approval ratings for McCain among a group once thought to be a reliable source of loyal support gives Republicans one more reason to be nervous about the upcoming elections. "If we can't depend on the support of total ***** morons," says Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), "then we've got a big problem. They're a key factor in our electoral strategy, and an important part of today's Republican coalition."
Not all Republican lawmakers are concerned about the poll. While Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) agrees that his party should not take total ***** morons for granted, they "really don't have anywhere else to go. They're never going to be able to understand someone intelligent and articulate like Barack Obama who wants to talk about issues. Just try having a conversation with them about global warming. They'll say, 'Oh, but Rush says volcanoes consume more ozone than humans do.' I mean, come on! They're total ***** morons!"- imnojezus, on 10/02/2008, -21/+5It was funny the first time, but now you're just digg whoreing.
- RonBurgundy76, on 10/02/2008, -0/+8It's true, but I dugg it again for being reminded of how funny it was the first time I saw it.

- lofispy, on 10/02/2008, -0/+7Exactly...as a fellow Ohioian I could almost feel his evil presence when he was here in Columbus last Monday. Hopefully, we can do the same as Michigan and kick him the hell out of our state too.

It's my sincere hope that after this election we can begin some political healing in this country. For the record, it's my hope, not my expectation.

It will be released one to two weeks before the election. This will be the end for Obama.
- bjornski, on 10/02/2008, -0/+4Along with Michelle's "whitey" tape, right?
- Caffeinate, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3After seeing what McCain and Palin have to offer (nothing but idiocy), they could release a picture of Obama standing next to Satan and it wouldn't change my vote. You underestimate the anger of the American people, and just how tired many of us are of the last 8 years. Overestimating the political dirty-trick bag is exactly the reason the Republicans are losing in ALL facets of government, not just the presidential elections.
I'm tired of dirty Rove politics, angry white men like McCain and wingnuts telling me to look the other way when Republicans have robbed us blind because "they love Jesus and will protect us".
We need someone to protect us from the George Bush's of this world, and the John McCain's who want to follow in his footsteps - I don't want anymore of their version of "protecting our freedom".

McCain has to start spending campaign ad money… in VIRGINIA!! In OCTOBER!!!
McCain has to start spending campaign ad money… in INDIANA!! In OCTOBER!!!
N.C. voter registration smashes records with 600,000 new voters (50%democratic, 21%republican)- Zipko, on 10/02/2008, -1/+21A couple weeks ago I read an article talking about the battleground states and it's comment on Florida was that Obama wasn't a big threat to win the state, but as long as he could keep it close deep into October it will force McCain to spend money there that could go elsewhere. It's amazing that after the events of the past 2 weeks that now McCain not only has to fight just to keep Florida, but is forces to invest in solid red states like Indiana and Missouri where he should be able to win without spending a dime.
- Pippers, on 10/02/2008, -1/+15The problem with Florida is that there are a LOT of older people there who are finding it tough to pay for their medical bills and illnesses. The current system is totally broke, and what Obama is offering will be a nice ride from here on out as far as medical coverage goes. I know a lot of older people who normally swing right, going left simply because they know the universal health care is what they need right now. $3000 in bills every month is just crazy, retired elderly people can't pay that anymore.
- logicet, on 10/02/2008, -0/+5Pippers, "$3000 in bills every month is just crazy, retired elderly people can't pay that anymore." neither can their grand children...
- magus_melchior, on 10/02/2008, -1/+7@Zipko: Good observation. Obama opened up multiple fronts for the McCain campaign to deal with. Where he lacks in sheer buying power, he more than makes up with dedicated volunteers. And, should McCain decide to rig ballots, he's now forced to do it in traditionally red states as well as traditional swing states. That costs money, and it increases the chances of leaving evidence that could lead to a very messy indictment.
- CarStan, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3yeah, imagine how that would look like: McCain winning in Colorado, Florida, New Mexico and Ohio, but losing Virginia, Indiana and South Carolina. wonder how he'll explain that

- rdoger6424, on 10/02/2008, -0/+5I live in PA. Every street and every intersection has both Obama and McCain yard signs. Television and radio ads are rampant. Sigourney Weaver came out to support Kerry about 15 mins from where I live back in '04

- Shiftgood, on 10/02/2008, -1/+10its getting tough to defend him huh? hes asking you to swallow so much pride.
- PolishLogic, on 10/02/2008, -6/+2defend him? Why defend a guy I'm not voting for?
You seem to take my blasting of Obama as a vote for McCain. Not at all actually, I blast Obama because he makes an entertaining target.
So, aside from that, are you telling me that it's a smart political move to actively campaign in a state you're going to lose by a landslide? If Michigan goes less than 68% to Obama, I'll be shocked. So why should he waste time and money there? - Shiftgood, on 10/02/2008, -0/+4who aree you voting for?
p.s. i dont really care about the article/story/strategy/pullout its beside the point. - PolishLogic, on 10/02/2008, -4/+3More than likely not at all. Obama's a joke, McCain is only marginally better in my opinion (mainly because his "stated" platform has more points that appeal to my ideology).
Nader is just a running gag, Barr raises too much suspicion for me when you see an older gentleman make such a 180 across the board in his political ideology (and that mustache reminds me of Dick Dastardly). Finally, I can't take either Chuck Baldwin or Cynthia McKinney seriously. I tried to, but they they opened their mouths.
Still kicking around a write-in for Morgan Freeman though. He showed excellent leadership qualities in Deep Impact. - EtherGnat, on 10/02/2008, -1/+4"So, aside from that, are you telling me that it's a smart political move to actively campaign in a state you're going to lose by a landslide?"
You never know what's going to happen. Two weeks ago McCain led Florida by 5%. Now Obama leads Florida by 3%.
Two weeks ago Obama only led Michigan by 2%. Now he's leading by 7%. If Obama can move Florida by 8% in two weeks it's certainly within the realm of possibility that McCain could move Michigan--a state he was once winning in--by the same amount in five weeks.
McCain just doesn't have the resources nor momentum to continue a 50 state fight, which is a problem. To win at this point McCain either has to win all nine states currently decided by 5 points or less (even though seven currently favor Obama) or take away one or more states that Obama has a strong lead in. - PolishLogic, on 10/02/2008, -3/+2Well the polls say McCain will lose the election by a landslide. However as I stated elsewhere, that would mean that the group that comprises one of the the lowest historical turnout rates would actually have to show up to vote.
- PolishLogic, on 10/02/2008, -6/+2defend him? Why defend a guy I'm not voting for?
- wendelgee2, on 10/02/2008, -0/+6If things keep up like this, he doesn't have a prayer of winning, period.
- PolishLogic, on 10/02/2008, -5/+2That's the same prayer as he had 8 months ago. Again, would you actively campaign in a state you knew you were going to lose in a landslide, and take time and effort away from states that were hotly contested?
Seriously, are any of you looking at this rationally? - Shiftgood, on 10/02/2008, -0/+7why did he campaign there in the first place then? that question brings up 2 possible answers.
1. Hes an idiot and doesn't think rationally because he is promoting in a place he is going to lose by a landslide.
2. Because he thought he might have a chance and it was worth fighting for (in which case, he lost this battle and is a sign of things going wrong).
Is that rational? - PolishLogic, on 10/02/2008, -5/+4Same reason all presidential candidates set up campaigns in all states at the beginning. Get your name out there and gauge sentiment. Plus it provides press ops along the way, then as it gets closer and closer you begin to reassess and focus your efforts where it's the most important.
I'd guarantee that if he had even a remote shot in Michigan (10% separation or less), he'd stick around there.
For example, Obama hasn't been to Idaho since early spring, if I recall. Idaho is usually a cakewalk for the Republicans. So he's not putting in the effort there. Sure he hasn't closed up shop, but one could argue it would be better for him financially and strategically if he did.
I know it's fun and popular to pile on McCain, but I happen to think that campaign-wise it's a better move for a candidate to pack up and leave town if they're getting blasted in a state. Effective use of resources can be a big thing for a campaign.
Besides, Obama's success is resting largely on the presumption that the one group comprising a huge number of his support base (35 and under) will actually do something they never do traditionally: show up at the polls on election day. Generally they do a lot of talking, but no action. It remains to be seen whether that will change this year when it gets right down to it. In a sense he's dealing with an unknown factor.
McCain on the other hand, has a large number of his support base in the form of the one group that has the highest turn out historically: (50 and over). So he's dealing from more of a position of having a known quantity when it comes to who's voting. - Shiftgood, on 10/02/2008, -0/+4Polish, you would make a good politician with answers like that.
nobody is going to argue against you that a candidate should pull out (even though thats what it sounded like you were arguing against).
And yes, young voters will need to show up on election day to sway the vote.
BUT...The the debate is about the fact that MI is a battleground state. And he lost it.
I know its an indirect way of saying it by stating "McCain Pulls MI Ads". But try to bridge the gap. - Caffeinate, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2Polish, if you are going to concern troll, at least try to disguise it better. Spreading FUD doesn't appeal to logic, and frankly you are crying "sour grapes" like the McCain supporter you want to be but can't because you also can't support a loser.
- PolishLogic, on 10/02/2008, -5/+2That's the same prayer as he had 8 months ago. Again, would you actively campaign in a state you knew you were going to lose in a landslide, and take time and effort away from states that were hotly contested?
- amrsobh, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1to late for a decision as always
- sandbird, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1I'm guessing they thought there was probably still a chance to flip Michigan, albeit a small one. But Ohio and Florida are much more critical, and they're willing to sacrifice MI for those two. If Obama picks off either of those two states, that's all she wrote.
- Shiftgood, on 10/02/2008, -1/+10its getting tough to defend him huh? hes asking you to swallow so much pride.

- iloveobama, on 10/02/2008, -39/+4Go Obama! Don't be an idiot and vote for McCain/Palin....Obama is going to change the world. We may have to give up some of our possessions for the greater common good, and so that other people can have a little bit more. As Obama said: "We can't drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times . . . and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK, that's not leadership. That's not going to happen." We need to lower our standards a bit so that people living in poverty in other countries can have a little more. Or as Obama told graduates from Wesleyan University: "Fulfilling your immediate wants and needs betrays a poverty of ambition, shame on us for being selfish and buying that SUV built by an autoworker trying to fulfill his family's immediate wants and needs." - As you can see, this is why we need Obama as president of the United States! Capitalism has failed, lets try global socialism

Sorry, I think I'll stick with capitalism for now. - pinchduck, on 10/02/2008, -0/+6Actually, the road to prosperity comes from getting everyone else to raise their standards. Economics is not a zero-sum game, as you portray it. Growing everyone's economy in a sustainable way is the way towards prosperity for everyone. We'll need to get off of oil, and destructive international agreements, and get rid of corruption, but it is entirely possible. The Revolution of Lowered Expectations is not the way forward, it is as flawed as the Republican "Head in the Sand" strategy of maintaining the status quo.

I just can't really find the words to express the irony in your message. I mean it's not as if free capitalist markets lead to the creation of the computer, the operating system, the web browser, and the internet in general. It's not as if capitalism is primary reason you are able to go online and denounce it as having failed.
Yes, let's try global socialism. It has such a better record than capitalism anyway.- iloveobama, on 10/02/2008, -7/+1But there will always be poor people under capitalism. At least under socialism we can lower the bar and all be equally poor so that there is no more wealth envy and haves and have-nots. Instead of people having ambition and working hard to achieve wealth, we can just have government step in and make us all equal. That will be much easier
