% of IT workers who have contributed to a campaign: 27%
% of American population that has contributed to a campaign: 0.3%
IT support for Huckabee? 11%
and Ron Paul: 9%- skags, on 03/24/2008, -0/+4"The survey, of 600 self-identified IT workers, found that 27 percent have used the Internet to contribute to a political campaign. By comparison, less than 0.3 percent of U.S. residents have contributed more than US$200 to a U.S. political campaign during the 2008 election cycle."
Are they saying 162 of those 600 contributed more than $200 using the internet? Or are they making a useless comparison? - DanOnTheMoon, on 03/24/2008, -12/+16McCain = Hillary = Obama. Lulz at the people who still don't get that they're all on the same team.

- Tomchei, on 03/24/2008, -2/+4How are they different then?

- TimDigg, on 03/24/2008, -4/+3naw he's wrong, its more like
McCain ≈ Hillary ≈ Obama- tidu, on 03/24/2008, -1/+2you and your character map
- TypeEE, on 03/24/2008, -2/+3It's ashame that you still couldn't see a differences in the three.
- Sogui, on 03/24/2008, -7/+10I take your political statement very seriously when you put LULZ in it.
- humanerror, on 04/03/2008, -3/+8Attention Americans: America is a one-party government. Republicans and Democrats are two factions of the same party; the corporate party. Or if you want to be more accurate about the party that supports merging business and state authority while maintaining the trappings of representative democracy, call it the Democratic Fascism party. And that's the only choice we get because the corporations decide who you hear about.
Do you think Obama is not a member of corporate party? Do you think he's not another spokesperson for the military industrial complex? Do you think he doesn't fully believe in the US's permanent war economy? Look behind his charisma, at his policies. He wants to expand the military, yes he does. He wants to increase US unilateralism and intervention around the world, yes he does. He wants to leave a permanent force of upwards of 20,000 troops in Iraq indefinitely, yes he does.
Look for yourself:
http://www.barackobama.com/issues/foreignpolicy/
QUOTE "Expand the Military: We have learned from Iraq that our military needs more men and women in uniform to reduce the strain on our active force. Obama will increase the size of ground forces, adding 65,000 soldiers to the Army and 27,000 Marines."
QUOTE "Ensure a Strong U.S.-Israel Partnership: Barack Obama strongly supports the U.S.-Israel relationship, believes that our first and incontrovertible commitment in the Middle East must be to the security of Israel, America's strongest ally in the Middle East. Obama supports this closeness, stating that that the United States would never distance itself from Israel."
QUOTE "Bring a Brutal Warlord to Justice: Former Liberian President Charles Taylor has been accused of committing war crimes by international prosecutors. After taking the presidency following a brutal civil war that decimated Liberia's population, Taylor created a rebel group that fought in neighboring Sierra Leone's civil war."
Digg me down if you wish, but you'll only be helping to keep people from discovering where their interests really lie. If nobody is allowed to say that all of our candidates are pro-war and pro-corporation, then it will never change. It's okay to like Obama (I like him myself), but please know exactly what you're supporting.- funkytaco, on 03/24/2008, -3/+2blah blah blah. not enlightening at all. go back to your cube.

- nokiaboy, on 03/24/2008, -11/+19So they like the dems, they like the Republicans, and they like someone else... so now I know why it takes them so long to figure out if it's the motherboard, the hard-drive or the power supply.
- WNW3, on 03/24/2008, -0/+10Or, more likely, IT workers represent a wide cross section of the population and can't be lumped into a group just because they have similar job titles?
- darkzealot89, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1We have a winner!
- WNW3, on 03/24/2008, -0/+10Or, more likely, IT workers represent a wide cross section of the population and can't be lumped into a group just because they have similar job titles?
- davidwasman, on 03/24/2008, -32/+33Who are these McCain supporters and how can I avoid giving them my business?
Seriously...they're Techs. They should have access to the internet, right? So how have they missed all the evidence?- laserblazer, on 03/24/2008, -20/+15Just what I was thinking. Perhaps they hate their lives and want to spread the misery around.
- Alegoo92, on 03/24/2008, -15/+26can't stand the thought of a differing opinion, can you
- laserblazer, on 03/24/2008, -12/+9When that opinion is akin to 'mmm tasty crap!' then no, I can't tolerate it.
- RealHyperX, on 03/24/2008, -21/+23Simple. Most of us techies are 1099ers. We like to pay less in taxes. We also like smaller government. No matter how bad Bush is, the dems will muck it up worse.
- laserblazer, on 03/24/2008, -21/+8I'm glad you're relegated to IT, you weak-minded sap.
- DanOnTheMoon, on 03/24/2008, -6/+2Freedom hater?
- davidwasman, on 03/24/2008, -8/+32You do realize how hilarious what you just said was...right? I mean, have you looked at the numbers lately? Republicans have squandered a surplus, ruined the dollar, and put us on a fast track to a possible depression.
- RealHyperX, on 03/24/2008, -8/+10Taxes are still lower with them. My property taxes in a dem controlled county has tripled. Those are monies out of my pocket. Where do you think my hatred for the dems comes from? Their political standings? No, from how much they make me pay for crap we don't need.
- PhantomRogue, on 03/24/2008, -1/+11Property Taxes are local Government, not Fedral my son.
- bagboyrebel, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1taxes may be lower, but that doesn't matter if the dollar is worth less and the money that is being spent on taxes is wasted.
- davidwasman, on 03/24/2008, -1/+5You don't hate them for their politics, eh? Funny, you seem to have no problem calling them 'Libtards' -
http://digg.com/2008_us_elections/Richardson_Obama ...
http://digg.com/environment/Solar_trumps_shade_in_ ...- RealHyperX, on 03/24/2008, -7/+5Right. I call them what they are. Idiots. Liberals have no clue about most things. My number one issue is money out of my pocket.
- Snowspot, on 03/24/2008, -2/+7Why just money? So who cares who the US kills as long as my life stays the same? It's a good thing our founders didn't have this logic, who knows what our country would be like.
- bagboyrebel, on 03/25/2008, -1/+2how open minded of you RealHyperX. Everyone with a different oppinion than you is an idiot.
- toughice, on 03/24/2008, -7/+8At the end of the day John McCain will probably do a better job with the economy than any democrat. I don't know if democrats don't understand math, or if they are just too dim witted to connect the economic dots - but lower taxes equals more wealth. The solution to the problem of being poor is more wealth. So if you want to help poor people, lower taxes.
I personally don't give two ***** about poor people - let their families take care of them.- Snowspot, on 03/24/2008, -2/+3damn a 30%-er
- TimDigg, on 03/24/2008, -1/+5"The solution to the problem of being poor is more wealth. So if you want to help poor people, lower taxes. "
This is the dillemma actually.... If more people in society helped the poor, we WOULD have lower taxes. Republicans always argue that if taxes were lower, nearly all the money would go to charity anyways.
"I personally don't give two ***** about poor people"
But with guys like you....we have higher taxes...
As been amazed with projects I've seen in the midwest, where they have low taxes and many private groups that really get out there to help people. Some places I don't see that sentiment. But in the midwest you see repub politics actually work. Not to mention you have multi-million dollar mega churches that help out quite a bit too... - bagboyrebel, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1The problem is that we aren't just a bunch of individuals that happen to live on the same land mass, we ar a society. Part of living in a society is working together to make sure everyone has a chance to live a good life, instead of only looking out for yourself.
- merper, on 03/24/2008, -5/+10Cause a war with Iran will be dirt cheap.
But hey, why worry about anything that doesn't show up right away on your rebate check. It's not like the repercussions of yet another chickenhawk republican administration will ever catch up to you. - creationism, on 03/24/2008, -2/+11Right. Let them enjoy small taxes and their grandchildren pay the war bills.
- LowRentDiggs, on 03/24/2008, -3/+8Your comment is reason #1 this country is so messed up right now. You would think, of all people, all IT workers would be familiar with the term "Total Cost of Ownership". The Bush administration has thrown you some scraps up front that you've gladly gobbled up while they shift the cost to a few years down the road and all the infrastructure, tangible and intangible, to atrophy to the point that you'll be paying much more on your taxes in the future.
- SheilaNoya, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2You won't have to pay any taxes at all once your job gets shipped to India, or given to an H1B immigrant who replaces you for less pay. McCain's speeches about our "global economy" and his "free market solution" should be scaring the hell out you if you want to keep an IT job.
- laserblazer, on 03/24/2008, -21/+8I'm glad you're relegated to IT, you weak-minded sap.
- Snowspot, on 03/24/2008, -11/+24So the way to magically achieve a smaller government is by electing someone who plans to spend trillions more in Iraq.
RETARDS FOR MCCAIN
Seriously get that bumpersticker... anyone voting for Mccain has NO ***** CLUE.- salinemist, on 03/24/2008, -6/+8I think you should compare how much Iraq costs as a percentage of GDP versus the Democrats socialist entitlement programs. You might be surprised.
- davidwasman, on 03/24/2008, -3/+5Yeah...f*ck people. Money is all that matters!
- polyGone, on 03/24/2008, -3/+8How about neither?
- RealHyperX, on 03/24/2008, -5/+3God! You libtards are stupid. You just prove it over and over again.

- DanOnTheMoon, on 03/24/2008, -3/+7McCain / Depends '08?
- SniperGX1, on 03/24/2008, -0/+4Comcast and AT&T employees count as tech workers too. That's probably where the number came from.
- SheilaNoya, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2I find it odd that they would even consider McCain after he's already admitted that he's never used a computer and doesn't know anything about them. McCain has no strategy for helping us regain our former edge on technology. He still claims the "free market" and "global economy" is the best way to go - which means we continue to ship tech jobs overseas where corporations can pay less for their workers.
Personal computers were the biggest change in America in the last 50 years, yet McCain isn't even curious enough to even want to try and use one. That tells you what he thinks of technology. He's too old to understand what this country needs right now.
- aliaakbar, on 03/24/2008, -26/+7go McCain
- laserblazer, on 03/24/2008, -10/+10To Hell or to prison? The guy is George Bush with whiter hair. Maybe you shouldn't vote. I hear finger painting is fun!

- theaceoffire, on 03/24/2008, -3/+4Tolerating people with different beliefs does not make Obama a "radical black separatist".
Everything he says tries to UNITE us, his party, and his country.
Please stop spreading fud. - amightywind, on 03/24/2008, -3/+4"God damn America!." "America is run by rich white men." "America got what was coming to it on 9/11." Obama '08 and '12!!!! - Jeffrosproto, on 03/24/2008, -13/+0i wish people would keep political discussion out of the comments and instead say stuff like comments 1,2, and 3.

seriously, it's painfully pompous- davidwasman, on 03/24/2008, -7/+9You're 16. WTF do YOU know? Besides, you support Hillary even though all the evidence has denounced her and proven her to be a liar, cheat, and supporter of racist attacks.
- stonewaljacksn, on 03/24/2008, -8/+5hahaha WOW. remember that south park with the college kids being all pompous. "YOU'LL REALIZE ONCE YOU GET TO COLLEGE" when all they really do is smoke weed and rail against authority blindly. That's exactly what you remind me of right now. That supposedly 16 year old person just showed a HELL of a lot more wisdom than you and I can only imagine you are much older. Hillary is a solid candidate for president, and she is practically Barry's twin on the issues. So maybe Obama's more charismatic, maybe he seems like a cooler guy. I'll vote for him, and it seems you will too. The difference is that you are a pompous ***** who just proved Alegoo absolutely RIGHT by thinking your opinion is all that matters and that you are always right. If this is true, which you obviously think it is, then get the hell off the internet and go run for president yourself cause you obviously know EVERYTHING. Douchebag.
- bagboyrebel, on 03/25/2008, -1/+1while I don't like Hilary, you have a good point about how stonewalljacksn is acting. Just because someone is 16 it doesn't mean that they can't have their own oppinion.
- crweaks23, on 03/24/2008, -1/+1deep breaths, stonewal... deep breaths.

- laserblazer, on 03/24/2008, -2/+7A plate full of turds should never be seriously considered for dinner. McCain and Hillary should never be considered for public office. That's called a parallel. If not wanting to eat turds sounds arrogant, then that's the price one must pay.
- davidwasman, on 03/24/2008, -7/+9You're 16. WTF do YOU know? Besides, you support Hillary even though all the evidence has denounced her and proven her to be a liar, cheat, and supporter of racist attacks.
- laserblazer, on 03/24/2008, -6/+3... and Fark's moderators.
- smotpoker, on 03/24/2008, -0/+6I almost dugg ya but PHP ain't that bad... 1000x better than asp and perl is a horror story. What other viable alternatives are there which efficiently accommodate both procedural and oo models and is efficient for projects both small and large?
Except for C (and maybe perl but it's so ugly I never could get used to it) it is the most powerful and flexible highlevel languages in existence that I know of- stretch611, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1Actually with components, Coldfusion works well with both procedural and oo programing. Of course the problem CF has is that it competes against ASP in Microsoft shops and PHP on the open source side of the market. It is hard to fight for the middle ground against two heavyweights.
- rinehart, on 03/24/2008, -3/+0Haha. How intelligent can you really be if you get stuck doing tech work on computers?
- TimDigg, on 03/24/2008, -2/+2don't forget MS access
- HigherLogic, on 03/24/2008, -0/+7Wow, what did PHP do to deserve being tossed in a list like that?
- TypeEE, on 03/24/2008, -0/+4a better list would have been java applets, IE, asp, .NET
- Alegoo92, on 03/24/2008, -13/+5it's so sad that so many people on digg haven't learned that their political oopppiinnnniioonnn isnt the only valid one..
- jsknoll, on 03/24/2008, -8/+3sorry, but this is what happens when a tech mag tries to do politics. those numbers are meaningless. essentially, what they say is, a third favor the republican favorite, a third favor the democratic favorite, and the remaining third want someone else. so? those numbers are no different than you'd find in nearly any community in america.
the only somewhat interesting number is obama's margin over hillary. but let's put that into perspective: the IT community is predominately young and male. that's not to say that everyone is a 20-something boy; rather, there are *less* women in the IT community, and _far_ *less* 50-somethings -- clinton's most important demographics.
how much you wanna bet a demographic breakdown by gender, age, and race will show the IT community to be completely typical?
oh, i guess the article *IS* interesting. most people prolly would've assumed they'd (we'd) be outliers.- cybrguy, on 03/24/2008, -2/+1You are assuming more than the article is in your conjecture, although true that our demographics to point in the trends direction, the correlalation is too weak. Things like campaign contributions and top issues are in line with the articles conclusions.
- RandoTheKing, on 03/24/2008, -1/+11Useless information.
- cybrguy, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1Useless to you and me, useful to campaign organizers who use information like this to decide who to target with campaign resources.
- PacketScan, on 03/24/2008, -11/+4I look at it this way Between:
Obama and Mccain = Obama.
Mccain and Clinton = Ron paul.- DanOnTheMoon, on 03/24/2008, -4/+3Oh, just write Ron Paul in.
- al11588, on 03/24/2008, -1/+0This is worse then that time in band camp.
- nastronomical, on 03/24/2008, -4/+21Working at a call center = doesnt actually mean Techie, mkay!!
I work in IT so please cut the utter crock, most people in IT favors the President that wont TAX us to Death or Destroy the economy under the disguise of redistribution of "OUR" wealth!!- Kangalanatolian, on 03/24/2008, -3/+4So that would be Ron Paul. Why don't you say it, so those who haven't been paying attention as well as you, can benefit from your wisdom? Many people still think ANY republican = frugal or small government.
- Pstall, on 03/24/2008, -1/+1What I dont understand is how Digg went from HUGE amount of support for Ron Paul to a HUGE amount of Pro-Obama articles.
- stretch611, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1The parent must be one of the 9%.
- Kangalanatolian, on 03/24/2008, -3/+4So that would be Ron Paul. Why don't you say it, so those who haven't been paying attention as well as you, can benefit from your wisdom? Many people still think ANY republican = frugal or small government.
- LukasSmith, on 03/24/2008, -16/+7As an IT guy I support McCain
Obama only gives skin deep change. Not interested in that. I think the Republican party has value
A. even if there had been a trillion dollar surplus when Bill Clinton left office, there wasnt one by the way, but even if that was the case the national debt at that point was 5 or so trillion dollars. Do you honestly believe, lets not be partisan here for a second, that congress would not have found some way to blow money whatever party had been in charge after 911? I mean seems to me Democratic leadership almost hints they would have gone after Pakistan first. I mean after all Osama is there. Could you just imagine the cost? Attacking pakistan would make Iraq look like a field trip. Add to the fact that Clintions cuts in spending may have in fact impaired our rediness in 911 situation. Clinton tried to take Osama out with bombs but failed. If he had spent 2 or three trillion dollars do you think he might have managed to be sucsesful before 911 putting that dangerous man out of his misery and really saved us a few trillion or so? Yeah Republicans overreact to threats. But that is only a response to the lack of response from Democrats. The question is who do you feel safer with people who react or people who dont? Then you add to the fact that congress will always manage to overspend on the budgets they put together. So as far as im concerned Clinton provided no surplus.
B. Republicans have 0 control over the value of the dollar. In fact many economists favor a weaker dollar since a strong dollar puts us at a diisadvantage.
C.We are not going into a depression. A recession is possible but some economists say a full blown recession is unlikely and even predict strong growth in the next year.- legendxx, on 03/24/2008, -3/+5GOP had their chance with the last 8 years. Our turn.
- creationism, on 03/24/2008, -4/+9Republicans are destroying the Constitution. Why don't you just move to China? No recession and no terrorists there.
- vinnyvenus, on 03/24/2008, -1/+4Why don't you move to France? I heard you get free health care over there. Also they have vast social programs and you pay very high taxes..
- kyouteki, on 03/24/2008, -2/+4No terrorists in China? Have you seen Tibet recently?
- Kangalanatolian, on 03/24/2008, -0/+3It is a sad world when Tibetan Monks are referred to as terrorists. So the Chinese are the good guys, eh?
- theaceoffire, on 03/24/2008, -0/+2I believe China labels them "Mentally ill".
China will never admit to internal strife, cause that could cause internal strife.
*sigh*
- vertinox, on 03/24/2008, -0/+3If Mccain didn't play nice with the evangelicals and had the actual balls to call Bush out on his anti-constitutional war then maybe I'd vote for him.
- nycmac247, on 03/24/2008, -1/+3"C.We are not going into a depression. A recession is possible but some economists say a full blown recession is unlikely and even predict strong growth in the next year."
--- do you know what derivatives are????? - cybrguy, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1Republicans have value just as Democrats do. But the republican and democratic "platforms" are divisive because they both speak as if they are the only ones who can really help the nation.
- LukasSmith, on 03/24/2008, -1/+1How does a comment about "derivatives" have anything to do with A. We will not have a depression. B. Recession is only possible not confirmed C. strong economic growth is predicted in the next year? You are getting dugg up merely because I am the enemy aka not liberal or an Obama fanatic.
- TimDigg, on 03/24/2008, -0/+2Republican DOCTRINE has value...republican politicans....worthless
Even Milton Friedman said this, most of them are VERY different when they actually come into office.
He said the best bet.... Democrat president, republican congress.
ambitious guy with lots and of good ideas and intentions....with some folks to keep him in line..
- verbose, on 03/24/2008, -0/+2Article has a confusing sub-heading, or at least it did for me:
"A survey of IT professionals found a roughly even split supporting Obama and McCain, but more than a third have another favorite candidate"
I kept looking for this other favorite candidate with a third of the support. - DanOnTheMoon, on 03/24/2008, -9/+21Ron Paul.
- neodorian, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1Doesn't believe in EVOLution
- bjs3171, on 03/24/2008, -1/+4so some people support, Obama, some support McCain, some apparently still support Huckabee, and some support Clinton. Wow. Who would have thunk it?
- TypeEE, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1thunk?
- al11588, on 03/24/2008, -6/+1I would have known the turtle neck bitch's at apple would favor Mccain since they don't like change. Look at OSX Leopard is an update. Windows FTW.
- tonytopper, on 03/24/2008, -1/+7So many comments that are reactionary, rude, and self fulfilling are coming out on Digg from election 08. I wish Digg had color coded flags people could put on others comments. The drop-down could look like this:

- pintomp3, on 03/24/2008, -3/+16how can you be in the tech industry and not support someone who supports net neutrality?
- 1timeuser, on 03/24/2008, -1/+8As a tech guy myself, I'm going to write in Optimus Prime. Who's with me?
- HellDonut, on 03/24/2008, -1/+29Jesus tech people, McCain is against Net Neutrality, pro telecom spying immunity, and pro real id act. WTF?
http://www.news.com/8301-13578_3-9864581-38.html- Kral, on 03/24/2008, -0/+10Maybe the tech people they interviewed were telecom employees.
- akula89, on 03/24/2008, -0/+3it's cliched but.. McCain really does = Bush 2.0 (and I'm not implying he is in any way shape or form improved over Bush!)
- Kral, on 03/24/2008, -0/+10Maybe the tech people they interviewed were telecom employees.
- vinnyvenus, on 03/24/2008, -7/+9As a single( not married ) tech guy who pays a substantial amount of money to IRS, I for one cannot support Obama. His economic plan is counterproductive, well, at least for me. He wants raise income tax, give me substandard health care and bail out people who made stupid decision with my money. It just sucks when you work so hard for your money and then government just takes away nearly forty-five percent of your money away.
- zioxide, on 03/24/2008, -4/+7"he wants to raise income tax"
well, we gotta pay for that 9 trillion dollar debt somehow
"give me substandard health care"
obama's plan isn't going to make you take government health care. you can keep your current private healthcare plan if you choose.- rinehart, on 03/24/2008, -4/+4But you are going to have to pay for someone else's "substandard" healthcare plan while paying for your own still. Counter-productive.
- davidwasman, on 03/24/2008, -3/+2Yeah...f*ck people. Money is more important.
- Cyrus042, on 03/24/2008, -0/+3David, there's other methods of addressing the issue other than moving towards a federal health care system. One of the largest problems with Healthcare right now is its growing cost. There's two sides to the issue, do we address the unsustainable growing cost? Or do we subsidize people so they can catch up? A federal healthcare system is useless if it only subsidizes cost or provides its own package.
In fact, some economists believe that a federal healthcare system would make addressing rising costs more difficult because the costs would reflected in the government budget and that until private consumers are given the ability to be consumers, companies won't bring costs down.
- rinehart, on 03/24/2008, -4/+4But you are going to have to pay for someone else's "substandard" healthcare plan while paying for your own still. Counter-productive.
- polvo, on 03/24/2008, -4/+2 So you would rather be taxed less, live in a recession, massive debt, war, poverty and with no personal freedoms? Selfish bastard.
- rinehart, on 03/24/2008, -1/+3Paying more to the government doesn't fix problems. People getting off their asses does something. You sit here on digg and try to call us selfish. Please, get off your computer, go out, do something for the greater good than saying you paying more taxes gets things done in the world. It doesn't.
- amightywind, on 03/24/2008, -2/+2Such unsightliness is rare on digg. Democrat politics basically translates into there are people in this country who jealous of what we make and think we owe them a living.
- neodorian, on 03/24/2008, -0/+3And republican politics basically translates into ***** the rest of the country as long as I can live comfortably. There's a cynical ***** way to look at everything.
- bagboyrebel, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1the health care problem isn't restricted to being able to pay for insurance, but even just getting an insurance company to be willing to cover you. Even if you are able to afford insurance many companies wont cover you if you are considered to have a higher risk, even for things out of your control. And even if you are covered then you still have to watch out for the insurance companies trying to weasel their way out of covering you. So even if we don't have a government funded health plan we do need to rework the insurance system.
- zioxide, on 03/24/2008, -4/+7"he wants to raise income tax"
- nycmac247, on 03/24/2008, -2/+2game over USA?
- soul1239, on 03/24/2008, -2/+4So basically there's just as many misinformed "tech people" out there as any other demographic. What's surprising is that these people presumably have access to more diverse (and likely truthful) information about candidates than mainstream luddites.
- rinehart, on 03/24/2008, -1/+1More diverse and truthful as in Digg? How about more biased and extremely tilted media.

- ucccft, on 03/24/2008, -2/+7What a bunch of Bill Gate crap! A survey of IT Workers and not a word about H-1B/L1 visa's being used to replace AMERICAN IT worker with cheap labor Indians.
Not one! Not ONE IT worker I know would ever vote for Insane McCain who tired 1000% to pass the replace american bill aka (Imm. Reform Bill).
Major Presidential Candidates on H-1B/L1
http://blog.vdare.com/archives/2008/03/01/major-pr ...
Hillary Clinton
“I also want to reaffirm my commitment to the H-1B visa program and to increase the current cap. Foreign skilled workers contribute greatly to our technological development. That is well understood in Silicon Valley.”
John McCain
“I will continue to support H-1B visas, but, I’m telling you, the American people’s priority is, either rightly or wrongly, and we live in a democracy, is that we secure the borders first.”
Barack Obama
“We can do better than that and go a long way toward meeting industry’s need for skilled workers with Americans. Until we have achieved that, I will support a temporary increase in the H-1B visa program as a stopgap measure until we can reform our immigration system comprehensively.”
In 2004, Ralph Nader was quoted by Rob Sanchez as saying:
I don’t believe in giving visas to software people from the Third World when we have got all kinds of unemployed software people here.

- brainworms, on 03/24/2008, -2/+2People in PC World are from the IT industry? This is news to me
- DaDrake, on 03/24/2008, -1/+0It's funny to see people denounce this poll, based on anecdotal evidence alone.
The fact is, the democrats and republicans have huge ideological differences (tho arguably, neither achieves their goals very well). Nothing will change those differences and people will vote based on them. Furthermore, democrats are no longer the party of the poor and republicans of the rich (income USED to be a good standard to predict party affiliation). Today, the MAIN standard is martial status and the number of children. This just shows you, the differences between republicans and democrats exist on the ideological level (not the policy level).
Now to spew some anecdotal evidence myself. IT people that I know (all programmers) tend to be libertarians. They don't care for further limitation on their 2nd amendment rights, an increase in government programs, and an increase in government taxes. Generally, they don't like McCain "war-mongering attitude" but they see his policy as something that doesn't effect them. In the end, they seem to pick the lesser of two evils and that is McCain (who undoubtedly is one of the most centrist candidates)- huszar02, on 03/24/2008, -0/+0Interestingly, the single strongest indicator of party affiliation nowadays is marriage. Married people are more likely to be Republican, and single people Democrat. Those can mean very different lifestyles and attitudes towards all sorts of things. It's a very ideological rift nowadays, not just economic.
- roho76, on 03/24/2008, -1/+2Of course they support McCain. He's the only choice the Media has given us on the Republican side. It's not rocket science.
- kuppoppo, on 03/24/2008, -0/+0More evidence that computer nerds are afraid of women.
- huszar02, on 03/24/2008, -0/+3Real IT folks (not point-and-click Geek Squad) are usually smart, rational people. They also tend to skew libertarian, maybe slightly more conservative than liberal, especially in economics.
- HealthyElijah, on 03/24/2008, -1/+1I find that highly bogus. No body likes McCain. Many like Ron Paul. Many like Obama. Ron Paul has way more Digg friends than anyone else? What a bunch of bogus crap the MSM wants you to believe.
- haobaba1, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2Software Engineers for Obama!!!!!
- blackbamboo, on 03/25/2008, -3/+0it really does not matter, McCain or Obama, they both do not care about IT workers and want to increase and support H1B Visas.
- bagboyrebel, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1I liked this part
"Strong support for candidates Huckabee and Paul seems to show a willingness to explore ideas out of the general mainstream, Cochetti said. "It reflects this highly independent nature of the IT workforce," he said."
So supporting Huckabee shows independent thought? Isn't he the one who said it would be easier to change the constitution than the word of God?
Digg is coming to a city (and computer) near you! Check out all the details on our
