8 Reasons to Avoid the iPhone 3G
tomsguide.com — Apple could have fixed ALL of the errors that it made with the previous iPhone V1, yet many still persist. Thus, rather than do an exhaustive test, we ’ve chosen to present you with eight glitches that Apple has yet to remedy—our reasons why NOT to buy the iPhone 3G... and why you should really wait for the next version to come out instead!

- WestonP, on 09/04/2008, -6/+13A couple good points, but mostly nitpicking.
- alanr19, on 09/05/2008, -3/+17Finding fault with Apple products = nitpicking
Finding fault with Apple competitors = fair game - GeckoSlayer, on 09/05/2008, -4/+4#1: The screen interface is absolutely fine, that's how 'ease-of-use' is defined, and that's how it should stay. Anything more complex and you run into a Symbian S60V3 type interface where it takes a few minutes to get where you want to go.
#2: The backup can be removed simply by installing apps by iTunes only (not using the AppStore on the iphone itself)
#4: This IS a gaming console. Have a look at half the games, these are more entertaining than all the games I have on my PSP combined.
#5: Coming from a 3-4 minute lock with a Nokia N95 to a 4-5 second lock with iPhone, I'm happy.
While the other points I have left I strongly agree with the author.- bbqsalad, on 09/05/2008, -2/+3Gaming console.. .LOL. You need new PSP games I think.
There should be an option to completely disable backups.
- bbqsalad, on 09/05/2008, -2/+3Gaming console.. .LOL. You need new PSP games I think.
- Canuck, on 09/05/2008, -2/+1I don't think this is nitpicky at all. These, along with a few others, are the reasons I haven't got an iPhone yet. The other reasons
- No video capture
- No MMS
- I live in Canada and would have to pay the Rogers prices.

- mrfrosti, on 09/05/2008, -4/+34An anti-iPhone article makes it to the front page of Digg? These must be the end times...
- shadus, on 09/05/2008, -3/+2I can't say I disagree with that, the republican party is running another run of the mill neo-con after the disaster of Bush.
- conversekid, on 09/05/2008, -6/+3Haven't we seen enough of these since the launch?
- twoboxen, on 09/05/2008, -1/+2I can never get enough of these types of iPhone articles, so no.
- atrapine, on 09/05/2008, -11/+3I'm exempt from apple products because my balls have dropped and I actually know how to configure Linux lol.
- CabesMojo, on 09/05/2008, -1/+6Thats the oddest definition of balls dropping I've ever heard. Did they drop right into your pocket protector?

- InsaneMachine, on 09/05/2008, -1/+9And you must login to print it....
- oldhick, on 09/05/2008, -4/+2Why would you print it?
- h0tpot, on 09/05/2008, -4/+1People still print stuff?
- InsaneMachine, on 09/05/2008, -0/+5Ok since people seem to be digging me down, If you want to print something it usualyl means having it be on one browser page, not 12.
- armakaryk, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2you sir get today's "god damned clever" award.
- jhandfield, on 09/05/2008, -4/+1Had it been 8 reasons on 1 page, people would be bitching that it's too long to read.
- nretamp, on 09/05/2008, -0/+10My only complaint is that I'm paying more for 3G and rarely getting it. I live and work in a place that is covered completely by their Big Blue 3G coverage map, and yet still get extremely spotty 3G service. Not cool AT&T... NOT COOL!
- theliamburns1, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Cheers. Because that is really the only legitimate complaint i have come across.
- h0tpot, on 09/05/2008, -0/+0Agreed. But a lot of complaints that lie with service cost or quality are the fault of the carrier and are often blamed on the hardware. Boo.
- nretamp, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Not cool Apple... NOT COOL!
- nretamp, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Actually have one other complaint. No picture messages! Having to find a pen, write down a code and password, then exit my messages into a web browser, enter the information, only to get a super small image from some other phone.
The message history bubbles are cool, but there's gotta be a way to have a separate message system for MMS.- h0tpot, on 09/05/2008, -0/+0I agree with this too, picture messaging is decade old technology, I am still to this day not sure why it can be easily implemented with the iphone.
- drewpost, on 09/05/2008, -2/+14What a crappy article. Multi page list - one for each item? Are you having a laugh mate? Go hunt for hits somewhere else
- apple1, on 09/05/2008, -2/+4A lot of these could be fixed in software updates.
- AndrewDB, on 09/05/2008, -1/+7It's a little late for this article isn't it?

- theliamburns1, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1You've never sat down with a jailbroken iphone for more than 10 minutes.
- MacParrot, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1The price of an item is directly proportional to what people are willing to pay for it.
Sorry you can't see that. Apparently other people can and dugg you down.- Fhwqhgads, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1"The price of an item is directly proportional to what people are willing to pay for it."

- nothin2g, on 09/05/2008, -5/+178 reasons, 20 pages, 1 dumbass.
- StevenBullen, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3Buried for reason above!!!!!!
- flashback99, on 09/05/2008, -3/+8Lots of innacuracies in this article. But hey, if you don't want an iPhone, don't get one. Got one recently and it does exactly what I want it to do. Sure, it ain't perfect, and apple certainly isn't claiming it is, so each to his own.
- ShyGuy91284, on 09/05/2008, -1/+2Like what? I've been debating on getting one myself. So far the only thing that really makes me hesitate is the crappy camera since I've gotten lots of usage of the still 3mp and 640x480 video on my work phone. It may not be perfect, but it's great when you don't want to carry a camera around with you 24/7.
- Nodaki, on 09/05/2008, -2/+69. Because my boss wont pay for it.
- GreyMalkin, on 09/05/2008, -12/+4Reason #1. Because it's a crap Apple product made by the Chinese.
- theliamburns1, on 09/05/2008, -2/+8You obviously don't own one.
- GreyMalkin, on 09/05/2008, -5/+0Maybe if I was a gullible Apple drone, I would own one. How you waste your money is your business.
- theliamburns1, on 09/05/2008, -1/+3What's your pager number?
- flashback99, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1hope the cans and string are working out for you.
- bbqsalad, on 09/05/2008, -1/+2"Maybe is I was a gullible Apple drone" ..
Or maybe you have friends and actually have use for a phone....Dont worry GreyMalkin you never will. - MacParrot, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2Where is your phone made? Since most electronics are currently assembled in the pacific rim, I would guess it's made there too.
You don't like Apple products why exactly? Let me guess:
"Two of my friends died using Apple Products!"
Yeah, an over used meme is about your speed - h0tpot, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2I think it's some kind of hippie dream to believe you could make your life in this country without owning one thing made in China. You wouldn't drive. You probably couldn't eat food from a typical grocery store and you certainly wouldn't own any electronic device, ever.
Maybe some of us are patriotic but got over ourselves enough to enjoy life.- h0tpot, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1I sincerely apologize for not living up to your standards of what is acceptable lingo on Digg. Perhaps I would've used the term "fan boy" instead?
- theliamburns1, on 09/05/2008, -2/+8You obviously don't own one.
- WhatsUpWithJack, on 09/05/2008, -3/+4"esthetically"? Buried.
- h0tpot, on 09/05/2008, -7/+1One reason to avoid this article.
1.) It took Google-Chrome three attempts and multiple refreshes to load it.- alanr19, on 09/05/2008, -0/+4That counts as a reason to avoid Chrome.
Chrome is in Beta, the site is not. - h0tpot, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Look down smarty pants, I am not the only one who had problems loading the site. Don't take it so personally. I didn't kill your cat.
- alanr19, on 09/05/2008, -0/+4That counts as a reason to avoid Chrome.
- manicleek, on 09/05/2008, -3/+5I'm not buying it because it still doesn't do all the things that my current phone does, that I need
As far as I'm concerned it's still a year or two behind- CeeAyy, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1The phone is far from perfect. I dislike a lot of things about it.
Are you talking about MMS or broadcast TV? Those are the only things I can think of that you might be talking about. I don't know of any phones that do flash so I am guessing that's not one of your phones many abilities. What does your phone do that the iPhone doesn't. - MacParrot, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1Dugg you up for having the one and only reason for not buying something. For those that can't read:
"Don't buy something if it doesn't meet your needs."
Since I look at the iPhone as a convergence device and it still isn't what I want from a product like this, I also haven't bought one nor will I until it is.- salomejones, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Dug you down for buying into his reasoning, even though he didn't actually list any needs.
- MacParrot, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1digg me down if you wish, but he didn't need to list his reasons since that wasn't the point. The point was to not buy something unless it does the things you need it to.
- AdrianEvans, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1FLASH - almost all recent windows mobile phones can do this... with some tweaking (lookup in xda-dev) or with skyfire.
Also iphone has no ability to insert memory card to download data files photos etc
Also GPS on iphone has no decent software.
....
- CeeAyy, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1The phone is far from perfect. I dislike a lot of things about it.
- clak, on 09/05/2008, -2/+6Why does the iPhone make PC people so crazy? When was the last time you saw an article telling people not to buy a Windows or Blackberry phone?
- WestonP, on 09/05/2008, -1/+3People are insecure about Apple's success. For so many years they've bought into the FUD and accused Apple of making childish computers that aren't for serious use, even though they had no actual experience with them.
I'm a PC person, by the way... but I just make up my own mind on things rather than playing "party politics". I love my iPhone 3G... it could use some improvements, all of which can be done with software, and 7 of the 8 things on that list aren't really things that I care too much about. - singularityv, on 09/05/2008, -2/+2Maybe because fanbois aren't gushing over Windows Mobile phones and Blackberries?
That's a damn shame, though. Windows Mobile deserves gushing. The HTC TyTN II / AT&T Tilt (WM6) kicks the iPhone's ass. Hell, I even chose to keep my outdated Cingular 8125 (WM5) over getting an iPhone. Windows Mobile > Apple, and I'm a Linux user.
Symbian also deserves more gushing than the iPhone...
- WestonP, on 09/05/2008, -1/+3People are insecure about Apple's success. For so many years they've bought into the FUD and accused Apple of making childish computers that aren't for serious use, even though they had no actual experience with them.
- webkami, on 09/05/2008, -1/+37One comment to avoid that 11 page (WTF) article
#1: Evolve the Screen Interface
#2: Fix That Stupid Synchronization
#3: Wireless Inconsistencies
#4: This Isn't a Gaming Console
#5: Not Much of a GPS Either
#6: A Camera From Another Era
#7: Slotless
#8: Stability Leaves Something to Be Desired- InsaneMachine, on 09/05/2008, -2/+4That lists feels as if they are just grasping at straws. The camera, i think it is more than sufficient (2MP).
I think some people would be more missed about not being to send or recieve MMS (multimedia messeges, there is a hack around it, by sending pictures to emails of other phones and by having people send pictures to your iphone email)- unixfag, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1I'd be more inclined to call MMS the hack, for phones without E-mail.
- rdas7, on 09/05/2008, -0/+21. Evolve the screen interface. Argument would have been more compelling if author had included demonstration of more effective screen interface. (if not, stfu)
2. Fix synchronization. Works fine for most people. There is a vocal minority who experience problems. Yes, the bug must be addressed. Does not constitute failure of platform.
3. Wireless Inconsistencies. Argument would be more compelling if author demonstrated examples where "inconsistencies" equaled failure, rather than minor inconvenience.
4. Show me another cellphone that you can install games of this caliber on.
5. What.
6. Argument would be more compelling if author demonstrated fundamental understanding of megapixel vs. image quality for small sensor optics. More MP does not equal better image quality.
7. Slotless. What the holy ***** are you talking about. Who's uses more than 16GB of memory cards.
8. Oh just shut up.

- uselessexpert, on 09/05/2008, -6/+7Just watch the fan boys say how something made by Apple can never be faulty.
- bradspry, on 09/05/2008, -1/+6Everything created by humans is flawed. Take your logic for example.
- h0tpot, on 09/05/2008, -2/+3Agreed. Since when do people who like Apple think that it never has a problem?
- MacParrot, on 09/05/2008, -1/+3@uselessexpert
The only thing faulty here is your digg account.- theliamburns1, on 09/05/2008, -2/+2worst comeback ever
- uselessexpert, on 09/05/2008, -3/+1Please....
Just your user name is bias towards Apple.
I see, just like most Apple people it doesn't take much to get you worked up when something negative is said about any Apple product.
I've proved my point.- MacParrot, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2Not at all. No one HAS to like Apple or its products. Other than a stupid user name (please look at your own for another example), I do nothing on digg to evangelize the platform or the company. I'm frequently critical of many of Apple's products (like the iPhone which I still won't buy, the AppleTV, or the iPod HiFi a ghastly product that never should have left the building). I don't go out of my way to say bad things about Microsoft, who's products I use everyday (Windows/Office at work, Windows on BootCamp and Office for the Mac at home).
What I do have a problem with is idiots such as yourself who can only get attention apparently by posting nonsense anonymously on the net.
Choice is good. Choose the products that suit you best and when you grow up you might realize that not everyone wants the same tech that you do and that's it's ok for them to do so.

- baldgye, on 09/05/2008, -1/+4just picking up on there points about the ipod.... the ipod was never '"the only one of its kind"...
- jhandfield, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1It may not have been the only game in town, but I don't know that it's easy to argue it wasn't a major factor, if not the factor, in the MP3 player market really taking off. Suddenly, everyone had to have an iPod, it was a status symbol like the iPhone is. People with MP3 players prior to the iPod were weird and/or nerds, then suddenly anyone without one was weird and/or lame.
- baldgye, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1lol... no the original ipods where terrible

*scratches nuts - Robart, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1I couldn't access the article. Any mirrors?
If its not on the list I want drag and drop everything. I can't stand the sync in iTunes. And I want built in maps for my GPS. I went on a trip last weekend and 3/4 the time I didn't have any 3G or E coverage so my GPS system was useless. - stealthc, on 09/05/2008, -1/+2Reason number 9: I don't need one!
- JasonCox, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Listen, alot of the problems with the iPhone 3G are software related. Yes, Apple should have delayed launch and done more testing, however they have the ability to patch all these flaws via firmware updates, something I cant say about my last Samsung phone.. lets just say I had fun showing people how easy it was to crash a cell phone.
And just for the record, the #1 reason to avoid the iPhone should be AT&T. - sondatch, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Of course there are problems with the iphone. Just look at the ipod. Steve Jobs admitted they were engineered to break at around the year and a half mark so consumers would buy the newest model. Why would you think they would change that practice just for the iphone? Sheep do not think hey this product sucks, they just see everyone has to have one and they go out and buy them over and over.
- Katana314, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1FIXED ARTICLE:

[insert subject hometown here] - kidathinnes, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1I am happy with my iphone 3G. Of course there are glitches and these will be mostly fixed with 2.1. I'm not a fanboy whatsoever. I have a Dell laptop and I built my own PC. I gave the first gen iphone a try and now I couldn't live without my 3G. The iphone is far from perfect but it provides easy hand held acces to my music, the internet and a boatload of great apps.
- ProjectGSX, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1The iPhone isnt perfect, but its still the best damned phone on the market by a large margin. And this is coming from someone who has never owned an iPod before. Strictly Creative products.
- jdandre, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Can't access. I am pretty happy with my 3G, so I was interested to read. Anyone have a mirror?
- plarp, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1nother reason.. don't make all those first gen guys feel so bad about how much they paid.. aka the reason this article was written
- TremorX, on 09/05/2008, -1/+2First gen buyers pay less in the long run.
- plarp, on 09/06/2008, -1/+1they pay less.. they get less
- TremorX, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Now that's some serious spin. You should be a republican pundit!
- TremorX, on 09/05/2008, -1/+2First gen buyers pay less in the long run.
- anyone4apint, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Blah blah blah doesnt have a good camera, blah blah blah doesnt MMS, blah blah blah, *yawn*, im so bored of this.
If you like the iPhone, go out and buy one. If you prefer another phone, go out and bloody well buy that. This is a MOBILE PHONE people, this is something that you get given to you for free every 12 months if you are on a decent phone tarrif, it is nothing more than a desposable commodity like every other phone. Get one, use it, wait for it to break and then move onto the next shiney thing, its so simple.- Commodus, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1You're obviously European -- Americans and Canadians rarely get high-end phones for free and often have longer contracts (as long as three years for Canadians). For many of us, it's a huge commitment.
- singularityv, on 09/05/2008, -3/+1The iPhone is overrated. I really have no desire to get one.
If I were to switch off of Windows Mobile, I'd get a Nokia E90. My roommate has an E90, and that device is a sexy beast. It's the ultimate anti-iPhone. The platform is completely open to developers, with amazing third-party application support (seriously, he found a BitTorrent client. For his phone.). It has a full keyboard, but no touchscreen. It's a beast, and it makes no apologies for its size--it's about as wide and as thick as a Nintendo DS (though not quite as deep)--none of that limiting functionality for the sake of size crap. And the awesome thing is that after he got his E90, he decided to sell his iPod Touch. He told me that everything the iPod Touch (i.e. an iPhone without the GSM antenna) can do, the E90 can do better.
Of course, if I stay with Windows Mobile, my options aren't bad--the HTC Kaiser/TyTN II / AT&T Tilt is also pretty awesome.
The iPhone doesn't even rank in the top phones I want. Hell, I'd take the Nokia N810 over an iPhone, and the N810 isn't even a phone--it's just a WiFi-equipped PDA. - oldhick, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2Another weakness, which makes sense, is that the GPS only works when you have a cell signal. I'm guessing that's because the maps aren't local on the iPhone itself. But that really sucks... You can't use it hiking or in the country side where AT&T doesn't have coverage...
Actually, the GPS sucks all around on the iPhone!- Commodus, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1That's only true for Google Maps, where you need the Internet connection to download maps. If (more likely when, based on what TomTom has said) a dedicated GPS app surfaces, it will probably have a preloaded set of maps that let you work independently.
Also, many other GPS phones are dependent in the same way, so don't single out Apple for this problem. - oldhick, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Yeah, I figured the "Google Maps" was implied since its the only map application available for the iPhone.
And I shall single Apple out for this problem. I don't play the "well other phones suck at this so this one gets a pass".
When you talk about crappy features, talk about crappy features. Things don't always need to be rationalized in comparison. Give me a GPS that works Apple!
- Commodus, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1That's only true for Google Maps, where you need the Internet connection to download maps. If (more likely when, based on what TomTom has said) a dedicated GPS app surfaces, it will probably have a preloaded set of maps that let you work independently.

- SlackerCS, on 09/05/2008, -1/+3What a half-assed article. I can't even understand half of the complaints. Like this one:
"It’s not any easier to play music or video clips—you still have to do it all manually."
Wha?
And how about:
"Or we could have talked about the fact that it’s still impossible to watch videos vertically. Yeah there’s the hands-free, tele-command microphone, but for those who opt for a headset, that doesn’t work so well once the iPhone is in your pocket."
What? He wants to watch videos in his pocket, and can't?
And there's this:
"The last paradoxical straw is achieved with the iTunes Music Store, which you can’t get to via a WiFi network, not on the 3G."
Uh, yes you can.
Toss in the numerous grammatical errors and you've got yourself a hell of an opinion piece!
And for the record: I'm not an Apple fanboy. I like my iPhone, but I'm not a nut. If they wanted to complain about something valid, how about the ridiculous ringtones we have to choose from by default, and the face that it costs two dollars to get a reasonable one?- nretamp, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1grammatical errors most likely due to the fact that it was translated from french... just saying
- cfuse, on 09/05/2008, -3/+3What's wrong with: it's ***** expensive and it's still just a ***** phone. Seriously, half of digg wants to suck off Jobs.
- boozedrinker, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1You are another in the crowd that has never owned one. $200 is very reasonable for this phone - some Blackberries are more expensive.
Please pull your head out of your ass and stop spewing verbal diarrhea all over the place.

- jamessavik, on 09/05/2008, -4/+2Here's a good reason they missed: because most people aren't Apple fanboy dweebs with more money than brains.
- boozedrinker, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1You are stupid.
- icodebot, on 09/05/2008, -1/+33 Reasons not to read this article:
#1 2 Pages of wordy, redundant introduction just to get to the list.
#2 Way too many pages to click through.
#3 Author complains about things that aren't that big a deal, and misses some things that are, like the iphone's short battery life. - boozedrinker, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1I really wish people would quit bitching the iPhone costs too much like cfuse and jamessavik above me... $200 is a bargain for all that you get in the iPhone.
- puma, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1too bad the service is horrible.
- gsale51, on 09/05/2008, -0/+0Sometimes, the younger crowd on line and the people who are addicted to all gadgets (I may be one of these people) have to realize that the world is more than you can 'see'.
Someone mentions that this review is a little late, but there are huge amounts of people who are slow to consider or buy product upon pre-release or release. People have contracts that are expiring by the day, for the next fifty years, so those people will consider iPhone on the day of expiration, but not before. Tom's Hardware is a great resource for everyone, and having this review as part of their library is important, and MAY even give them exposure within Apple's marketing / engineering division. There is a LOT of value to this review.
That being said, I still think it is a stretch to start making comments about the stock market to just say A+B=C!!! Yes, Apple is showing a slowdown in revenue. But that does not mean that it is because the market does not accept the iPhone or they are punishing Apple. But let's just THINK for a second at WHAT could cause it:
1. Apple is in a huge R&D changeover - adding the Air, adding a newer iPhone, Intel releasing a ton of new technologies, compatibility ironing out with both the overall OS and partner companies,
2. Competition has increased: Amazon.com, Sony, WalMart, Hulu, etc. This has cut into their revenue stream and predicted sales growth,
3. The time spent on adding partnerships with many many international carriers for the newer iPhone, the growth pains of the iPhone app store (believe it or not, this takes resources)
4. The building being burnt down which housed IT AND some additional offices.
5. Maintaining the momentum of future technologies to incorporate into future products, like some potential tablet and the inherent issues of compatibility, there.
6. The retail outlet's, their growth rate and the entire marketing infrastructure, logistics, training and so forth .
7. The ENTIRE economy is changing, and ALL companies are showing a slowdown in many respects. So in contrast to other companies, is Apple really a 'crested' or has it really 'reached its peak?' There is no honest way to say this in a review or otherwise without empirical substantial evidence. - brickbat, on 09/05/2008, -1/+1These are all decent points BUT I have a windows media device with a built in gps and tomtom and while it is functional, as a phone it is a complete and utter FAILING piece of SSSSHHHHIIIITTTT. You cant sync it with outlook over wifi or 3g either.
My wife has an iphone 3g and while its not perfect in every area, it is one slick device that does what it does extremely well unlike the wm6 device which does a lot but it does it so badly that it pisses me off every time I use it
These are the same reasons I switched from XP to Ubuntu and OSX. GD Microsoft have lost in battle war too even though they had a 10 year headstart.. As soon as firmware 2.1 comes out and tomtom releases their software for the iphone, I'm getting one. - p51d007, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Hey, I'm not an Apple fan by any means, but come on...something that does what the iPhone does with original iphone or the new one is bound to have bugs. And for the problems with sync'ing it, you think you have it bad, you should see some of the glitches that are with the MS version of active sync! The XP version works most of the time, the Vista version was like pulling teeth to get it to work. Now that I got it to work, you pray it stays that way. All of these mobile devices are in their "first gen" if you ask me, and as the technology advances, will get better. If you go back far enough........do you remember editing auto bat & config sys files to get the bleeping sound card to work in a dos game, or windows 3.1? Remember editing pif files? Computers came a long way in 12 years, and the mobile device market will too.
- mnk0, on 09/05/2008, -2/+0anyone with a brain should avoid the Iphone all together .. lets spend $80 a month to show everyone how cool i am by choice of products yay.
