Apple's iPhone 2.1 update is finally out!
engadget.com — This big update for Apple's iPhone comes with Steve's personal promise of fewer dropped calls, better battery life, less app crashes, major bug fixes, and faster backing up in iTunes.
- 2101 diggs
- digg it
- luap119, on 09/12/2008, -3/+28*Crosses fingers*
- windphoenix, on 09/12/2008, -4/+3I installed and everything works fine but I still am not sure about the dropped call thing.
- jfulls, on 09/12/2008, -1/+29I've never had a dropped call on my iPhone.
Is it a big problem for some people?- dfsjdkflasjk, on 09/12/2008, -0/+8It has been for me
- windphoenix, on 09/12/2008, -0/+8It has been for me too. Very frustrating
- 11oops, on 09/12/2008, -0/+7Me three.
- jfulls, on 09/12/2008, -0/+4Well chirped then.
I think this might be the only advantage to being with Rogers as opposed to any other carrier ever. - Tenoq, on 09/13/2008, -0/+2No call drop issues in Australia.
- DocHoliday22, on 09/12/2008, -4/+3iPhone-dev Team, where do I donate?
- Revolution101, on 09/12/2008, -1/+5i tried reading the article on gizmodo about this on my phone and it crashed SIX TIMES. i normally wait about a week before updating but ***** it. i'm sick of these crashes. it works great, i actually browsed the internet for more than 5 minutes without it crashing and resetting the page!
- svensksvamp, on 09/13/2008, -1/+1so it did crash after 5 minutes?
- smakusdod, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3I had the worst problems EVER prior to this update. Couln't install apps without white apple screen of death. Post 2.1, everything is PEACHY. Everything is fixed as far as i can tell...
It's how the phone should have launched. - lartones, on 09/13/2008, -1/+2I have 2.1 installed and my Safari still crashes.
- championchap, on 09/13/2008, -0/+1Installed it last night, backups are still taking forever.
Got much further along the progress bar.. but the last 8th of it now is just at stand still.
Also, there is this weird thing with the colour and gloss happening.
Some apps colour is slightly different, they are also FAR more glossy.
Here, take a look.

The first was taken on the last version, had to take a screenshot of 13:37 o'clock!
The second just now on 2.1. - Scaryclouds, on 09/14/2008, -0/+1This is all well and good, but will this update be the *funniest* update ever?
- sio2man, on 09/12/2008, -1/+50I'm willing to live without all the other features as long as it doesn't crash as often!
- TheStooge1, on 09/12/2008, -0/+28Well I guess I am just a jerk then, because I want both...
- Niightwitch, on 09/12/2008, -4/+1stooge
- derble, on 09/12/2008, -1/+15jerk
- jfulls, on 09/12/2008, -6/+0chirped
- Taiyoryu, on 09/12/2008, -0/+9I noticed they didn't list "Safari will no longer crash" in the list of changes
- blackinthmiddle, on 09/12/2008, -0/+4I downloaded 2.1 about three hours ago. Safari now allows you to have about five or six pages open before it forces all of the pages to reload when you navigate to them. However, it crashed (again) within 10 minutes of me using it. It's not a third party app, but damn it's annoying when you got a good signal, almost finished downloading a page, then it crashes.
- chazuk, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3Especially when you reload it and it loads about 3 pages back from where you were.....
- AutoTom, on 09/12/2008, -2/+1try downgrading to the old firmware
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 09/13/2008, -0/+1and how long before apple realizes that, instead of jamming unstable features down our throat before they're ready?
- TheStooge1, on 09/12/2008, -0/+28Well I guess I am just a jerk then, because I want both...
- bjarkebech, on 09/12/2008, -4/+173If this doesn't fix the keyboard lag i'm going to be VERY angry.
- reckage, on 09/12/2008, -0/+19It said that it included increased performance in text messaging. That was a fairly significant source of my keyboard lag headaches.
I won't get to update until this evening, but I hope its good.- blackinthmiddle, on 09/12/2008, -0/+4I actually never had text messaging keyboard lag. I only get it (still do even after the update) when typing in text areas on websites (like digg).
- davidlick, on 09/12/2008, -0/+2@black: I've only experienced lag in Safari if I try typing before the page finishes loading... I didn't notice what I was doing for a while.
- Shalaby, on 09/12/2008, -0/+16That keyboard lag with texting has been driving me mad. You finish typing your message and it take about a minute to catch up
- Jerk, on 09/12/2008, -0/+18Thankfully it does! Finally! It's back to how it was on the 1.x firmwares!
- Frozo, on 09/12/2008, -1/+3After the last update, it seemed to improve for me too, until an hour or so later. Time will tell.
- spoonchucks, on 09/12/2008, -5/+9I'm sure the lag was related to the spell checker/predictor. If you put the cursor in the middle of a word, the lag completely disappears (as the predictor doesn't work there). But as soon as you go back to the end of your line, it starts up again.
Further, I think the prediction lag was related to the Contacts being slow to load, because if you type out someone's name from your contact list (and misspell it), the phone presents you the correct spelling.
Soooo... If they fixed the contacts speed, HOPEFULLY, it should have a domino effect. If not, I hope Apple gets the living crap sued out of them in those class action lawsuits. - broeks, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1Agreed.
I am able to get around this though by going into Safari and holding down the home button until it closes. Then everything flies again. - Virgule, on 09/12/2008, -0/+4You guys won't like bjarkebech when he is angry. No sir.
- streak, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1Bah! Why don't you wait to post until you've updated and tried it?
- GoldenChaos, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1Looks like text messaging and contacts are sped up to match 1.x software. This is awesome, I've been using it all day.
- reckage, on 09/12/2008, -0/+19It said that it included increased performance in text messaging. That was a fairly significant source of my keyboard lag headaches.
- pmc64, on 09/12/2008, -10/+4It took a few attempts for itunes to show an update but it's installing now.
- fuelcarddotorg, on 09/12/2008, -29/+7should be 2.03 since there wont be any new features. Im selling this thing if I cant copy paste by the time the htc touch HD comes out
- luap119, on 09/12/2008, -14/+8Honestly?
Just sell it now. You're a joke. - MadKennyP, on 09/12/2008, -2/+18You shouldn't have bought it. You knew there was no copy/paste when you bought it, right?
- fuelcarddotorg, on 09/12/2008, -23/+1I still love the web browsing, but I have to carry a ***** WM phone so I can copy paste.
- Munceenuts, on 09/12/2008, -1/+18@fuelcarddotorg
That is really stupid. Do you desperately need copy and paste that much that you need to carry around two phones? I doubt it. - fuelcarddotorg, on 09/12/2008, -20/+2yes, I do need it, why else would I do that?
- dyranios2, on 09/12/2008, -0/+13Hey did you say the same thing on the engadget article:
http://www.engadget.com/profile/2045313/
is this you??? - dfsjdkflasjk, on 09/12/2008, -0/+13Because you're stupid and wasteful?
- sleepwalkers, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3@fuelcardotorg: What exactly do you *need* the copy and paste for? I mean, I know it's annoying as all hell, but it would be easier to carry around a pen and paper rather than a whole 'nother phone to do it.
What is so important that you can't either remember it or write it down? - sadilak, on 09/12/2008, -2/+1copy and paste is very useful. Atleast copy is very useful. Many a time, you receive an email with a phone number in the text. It would be pretty nice if apple did give us a feature so that we can copy the phone number or some email or some text content into contacts or notes or whatever.
The Bottomline is that Copy and Paste is actually very useful. - AnOMNOMymous, on 09/12/2008, -0/+6@sadilak
Anytime a properly formatted 10 or 7 digit phone number is in a text message or email, it becomes clickable so that you can save it. You don't have to copy and paste it. Do you even have an iPhone? It's been a feature since 1.0.
- vmeeno, on 09/12/2008, -6/+8You know you won't. You're just posing an empty threat. Pathetic!
- fuelcarddotorg, on 09/12/2008, -11/+4why wouldnt I? I like the phone, but if a better phone comes out that can do what I need it to I'll get rid of it
- SurrealDream, on 09/12/2008, -1/+4You know what, good for you for being able to afford two fancy phones. Some of us will make do with the iPhone that we spent a fair while saving up for and are grateful enough to appreciate for what it does.
Seriously, ***** you, buy a new phone. We don't care.
- jfulls, on 09/12/2008, -3/+0chirped
- Suilenroc, on 09/13/2008, -0/+1Alrighty, I give in. Why do you keep saying this?
- dyranios2, on 09/12/2008, -0/+10No way man don't tempt him, he'll do it he's crazy I swear!!
- luap119, on 09/12/2008, -14/+8Honestly?
- pmc64, on 09/12/2008, -10/+5I'm not sure but i think they changed the color temperature again
- Appleologist, on 09/12/2008, -1/+3I wish you weren't being dugg down, because there were several iPhone owners (including myself) who noticed a color bug with iPhone 2.0 that only effected certain iPhone models. I noticed the color difference right away on my iPhone 3G after updating to 2.1. The colors are much much richer. I'm so glad Apple fixed this, because I got this iPhone as a replacement and I noticed right away the huge white balance issue that my original iPhone 3G didn't have. So much better now. Thanks, Apple!
- megamod, on 09/12/2008, -6/+31Poo, they make no mention of background services or background push notifications or GPS navigation improvements or copy or paste or cut =(
- dudeguy1234, on 09/13/2008, -2/+1openclip.org
- Reaktor5, on 09/12/2008, -6/+111Where's our push notifications?!
- pauldy, on 09/12/2008, -0/+21Sites all over reported that push notification had been pulled from the developer releases a long time ago.
- jfulls, on 09/12/2008, -18/+8Too complicated, apple can't figure it out.
- BrendanSheehan, on 09/12/2008, -1/+16They are in the clouds.
- Frozo, on 09/12/2008, -13/+5at&t bought took them all! Seriously, this is all because at&t wants you to pay for SMS. Total BS.
- drlha, on 09/12/2008, -1/+7Why are people digging this guy up? What he is saying is total BS. My guess is that Apple decided that bug fixes took precedence over adding a major new feature that may not have be ready for primetime yet. AT&T has nothing to do with it.
- streak, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3AT&T may have had a *lot* to do with it, if AT&T's network wasn't yet prepared to handle the load of push notifications.
- skidooer, on 09/12/2008, -9/+2Yes. 2.0.2 was stable enough. Let's get this developer API in to shape first. And then we can go back to fixing bugs.
- Buellrunner, on 09/12/2008, -4/+1I'm sure that its on its way....this type of functionality is a must as so many users choose Blackberry simply because of the PINNING application which is a "Push App"....It'll come....I'm sure it will be good when it does...
- stuy486, on 09/12/2008, -6/+3Where are our push notifications?!
or
Where's our push notification?!
sigh...
- pauldy, on 09/12/2008, -0/+21Sites all over reported that push notification had been pulled from the developer releases a long time ago.
- Ogre73, on 09/12/2008, -6/+5Anyone install yet? Success?
- n3wb4y, on 09/12/2008, -3/+3I came online to install but found my iphone frozen and requiring its 8th factory reset
this patch would want to work miracles - Diggnabbit, on 09/12/2008, -0/+7I installed with no difficulty. It seems stable but I haven't noticed much different (though I wasn't really having problems beforehand).
(Backup is definitely faster.) - habbofresh, on 09/12/2008, -0/+2Success on 3G phone, Seems to deliver as promised.
Success on a previously pwned 2G phone. Since I only need a carrier unlock and jailbroken apps are not that important to me, I took the risk with the update and just let iTunes 8 update the phone.
To my surprise I now I have an unlocked, stock ipsw phone for use during athletic activities. - BrendanSheehan, on 09/12/2008, -2/+2MUCH SUCCESS!
- blackinthmiddle, on 09/12/2008, -0/+2Did it about three hours ago. Safari seems to cache pages now. I had six pages open and didn't have to reload any of them. However, upon opening the seventh, it looks like the cache got cleared because I had to re-download all of the pages again. And if you leave Safari, then come back, all pages that you downloaded have to be downloaded again.
- sadilak, on 09/12/2008, -1/+0It has been around 20 minutes since I installed 2.1. Am testing for "Significant Increase" in battery life by configuring 3 push accounts.Let me see if the battery lasts atleast till the night. Contacts seem to opening faster. You dont experience the "freeze". I have no idea about internet speeds since mine is the first generation IPhone.
- giogalindo, on 09/12/2008, -0/+5They weren't kidding about the faster backup time, that's for sure.
- merdiesel, on 09/13/2008, -1/+1Just updated it and it crashed and I had to do a full restore.. ***** *****.
- n3wb4y, on 09/12/2008, -3/+3I came online to install but found my iphone frozen and requiring its 8th factory reset
- beerbarron, on 09/12/2008, -2/+48Just installed now, an impressive amount of fixes. No lag on Txt is very welcoming... and the backups are much much faster! Notice iTunes now displays the apps space as well!
- phr0stbyte, on 09/12/2008, -4/+1thats probably because the installation process reboots the phone. give it a day w/o restarting and see how quick it is.
- blachole, on 09/12/2008, -2/+39Installed no issues. Seems much quicker and theres a new 3G icon..
- duriast, on 09/12/2008, -1/+16also a new edge icon
- MrChunks, on 09/12/2008, -9/+4It's not so much an "icon", more a "letter E".
- megamod, on 09/12/2008, -1/+76oh...is that what they meant by saying they were going fix Edge and 3G? =P
- DocHoliday22, on 09/12/2008, -2/+6Are you guys sure it's not because of a fresh firmware install? I remember people said the same thing about the last firmware...
- cyberwiz01, on 09/12/2008, -1/+6And the one before that.
- duriast, on 09/12/2008, -1/+16also a new edge icon
- duriast, on 09/12/2008, -3/+7just installed. everything works fine :)
- klekamp, on 09/12/2008, -9/+1Let's see if they can get this one RIGHT!
- djscoottrain, on 09/12/2008, -1/+9Works like a charm. No App crashes over last 30 minute of use.
- Frozo, on 09/12/2008, -0/+6I dont know what you guys have installed, but I have like 30 apps on mine and I get a crash maybe once every few days. Not sure what 30 minutes is going to prove.
- blackinthmiddle, on 09/12/2008, -5/+2Safari crashed for me within 10 minutes of the update. I know they said they were going to fix third party apps crashing and this is one of their own, however, damn, it's annoying to have Safari crashing as much as it does. Maybe one in every 10 page views results in a crash.
- shank2001, on 09/12/2008, -0/+2what pages does it crash on, mine almost never crashes, and I use it like crazy, and I am still on 2.0.2
- blackinthmiddle, on 09/12/2008, -0/+2Hmmmm....now that you ask that question I realize it usually crashes when I'm trying to navigate through digg (not m.digg.com).
- HolyChimp, on 09/12/2008, -1/+3Digg is a Javascript behemoth. It sometimes hangs Firefox on my laptop, which has a lot more resources to work with, so I'm not surprised a phone can't handle it.
- Ogre73, on 09/12/2008, -3/+32So far so good. Another 238 Mb download though, I wonder if future software updates will be able to patch and not strip the entire OS. Either way, it's working and SNAPPIER!
- cmgarcia, on 09/12/2008, -4/+9Of course it's snappier, you just restored. :P
- BrendanSheehan, on 09/12/2008, -9/+2Updating is not restoring.
- chazuk, on 09/12/2008, -1/+7@ BrendanSheehan
Why the ***** do you think it does a backup before updating? - migitalwarfare, on 09/12/2008, -0/+5updating backs up your data, wipes your phone clean, fresh installs the newest firmware, then transfers your data back to the phone.
how is that not restoring? - BrendanSheehan, on 09/13/2008, -9/+1@ chazuk
Using that logic it does a full restore every time I connect to iTunes, the *****.
And just to clarify on the whole restoring thing, when you restore your phone all data is removed from your phone. I.E. after I update to 2.1 and open an app and find my shopping list "still" present in Pick&Choose.app, that's a good sign things haven't been "restored".
Get the facts right, digg. - BrendanSheehan, on 09/13/2008, -2/+1I tried lol.
- Radan, on 09/12/2008, -5/+6I've never understood why people complain about filesize. It's the year 2008 people! Heck, by just having an iPhone in the first place means that you have at least 3 Mbit/s over HSDPA and for example NetShare.
- Frozo, on 09/12/2008, -1/+10LOL.. It's ALWAYS snappier, according to someone. Im starting to hate this word.
- BrendanSheehan, on 09/13/2008, -5/+1No, 2.0 was widely regarded as "slower", not snappier. I think you may need to check your news reader.
- Frozo, on 09/13/2008, -1/+3Brendan, dont be such a tool. I was making a joke – 90% of the time, people love to say it seems snappier, even though they have no quantitative evidence. People, please dig me down for wasting internet space on explaining to him.
- BrendanSheehan, on 09/14/2008, -0/+1No hard feels dude, didn't mean to be a tool. Thing about text on the internet is tone never gets properly felt, I meant my comment light heartedly. You rock! :D
Though seriously, waiting a long time, versus a little time is good evidence for me. Like when your engine in your car is having issues and your losing power, you feel something isn't right. 2.0 was like that, and 2.1 doesn't feel that way.
- CannedCorn, on 09/12/2008, -7/+1Shutup and get broadband, this is 2008. You have an iphone 3g and dialup? Tether you whore!
- jfulls, on 09/12/2008, -3/+0chirped ogre!
- migitalwarfare, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1enough with the ***** chirps
- jfulls, on 09/12/2008, -0/+0chirped.
- cmgarcia, on 09/12/2008, -4/+9Of course it's snappier, you just restored. :P
- digjam, on 09/12/2008, -1/+60Things I ve noticed so far:
* Increased download speeds. Not sure if the true case but I was getting 400Kbps yesterday and I am getting1.3Mbps today consistently. Do let me know if thats the case with you guys
* Increased speaker volume: It definitely sounds louder.
* New 3G icon
* Genius bar: at first i couldnt see it but I had to enable it in itunes and resync the phone to see the genius playlist on the phone. Tho, the bar is still missing on the ipod. May be I ll see once I have the suggestions on itunes.
* Security loop hole on home screen with passcode, seems to be fixed.
* Backup was a breeze.- Reaktor5, on 09/12/2008, -0/+6I guess if you manually manage music the Genius feature will not show up (for me at least) so here's what I did:
In iTunes, click on a song and then the Genius button.
Click on "Save Playlist" at the top of the list of songs. This will create a playlist in your "playlists" section of iTunes.
Drag the newly created playlist up to your iPhone. It'll create a Genius playlist on your iPhone but more importantly the Genius function now appears to work on the iPhone itself.
Thanks to the Apple Discussion Forums. :)- jonborthwick, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1was looking on there as well. i was going to hate re-populating the phone with my manually selected songs... just sync manualy - hit the sync button in the bottom right (leave manage music myself selected). Worked for me.. really liking it.
- digjam, on 09/12/2008, -2/+7I am least worried about genius bar tho, the songs I like are not on itunes anyways.. so not much of a feature for me.
- btschul, on 09/12/2008, -1/+4It works with any songs in your iTunes library. Not just ones bought from the iTunes store.
- brjndr, on 09/12/2008, -0/+5If I try with a song not on iTunes it tells me "Genius is unavailable for the song..." and it asks me to update, after which it may work. I think as people add their libraries and update the info to Apple more songs will work. They probably used the iTunes store data on what people download together to correlate the songs.
- AceyS, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1brjndr, make sure the song is titled correctly. If it can't find the track on iTunes, most likely it just isn't spelled correctly, or yeah the rare chance the song isn't actually available on iTunes. It is possible they use data from songs they don't have but considering how many variations there could be for such song titles... who knows.
- megamod, on 09/12/2008, -9/+3I think the genius bar is just trying to get you to buy random songs on itunes. Interesting concept but just seems like a farse. I wish there was a way for it to create a playlist from your own available songs (organize your songs so that it makes a good "mix")
- mrgermy, on 09/12/2008, -1/+15There's the Genius Bar and then there's the Genius Playlist option. Select a song and then bottom right hand corner of itunes you'll see the 'genius' icon, click it.
- Diggnabbit, on 09/12/2008, -0/+11What mrgermy is saying is that it does exactly what you're asking for.
- megamod, on 09/12/2008, -0/+5wow =/ I feel silly now. Well genius bar is still crummy.
Thanks for the free iTunes lesson though. - habbofresh, on 09/12/2008, -2/+6megamod. It's ministore 2.0. What other purpose did you think it would have other than to drum up more sales?
- lornefs, on 09/12/2008, -3/+39Thank god they finally put in a new 3G icon!!!
- Frozo, on 09/12/2008, -0/+19I know! Now I can FINALLY buy one!
- migitalwarfare, on 09/12/2008, -0/+8i'm glad they had someone working on that instead of something stupid
- ramsinks.com, on 09/12/2008, -7/+6Cool.
But not compelling enough to loose my jailbreak. - Lewiji, on 09/12/2008, -2/+2Any sign of nike+ support?
- Gabberwok, on 09/13/2008, -0/+1I don't think that's coming anytime soon. Otherwise they would have mentioned it being in development when they announced Nike+ support in the iPod Touch v2.
- conquest, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1I was hoping the speaker volume would get resolved. Sometimes I could barely hear it when it was turned all the way up. Other times it was OK but not great at full volume.
- FoxOrian, on 09/12/2008, -0/+2Looks like I can't use Genius -- every single song I try it with comes back with the message "You do not have enough similar songs to create a playlist at this time."
Either my music tastes are too varied / obscure, or 1300 songs / 8GB of storage is too little :(- dearacc, on 09/12/2008, -0/+4click on the store tab at the top of itunes, click update Genius. wait for a message to pop up that says it was updated then re sync your music.
- musicphreke, on 09/13/2008, -0/+3If you have first gen it's got a new Edge 'E' icon, too.
- Reaktor5, on 09/12/2008, -0/+6I guess if you manually manage music the Genius feature will not show up (for me at least) so here's what I did:
- Reaktor5, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1I'm not seeing this repeat text message alert, which is weird.
- Reaktor5, on 09/12/2008, -0/+4Edit:
It's a reminder every 5 minutes for the unread text.- AnOMNOMymous, on 09/12/2008, -6/+3It's only an edit if you edited your original post.
- digjam, on 09/12/2008, -1/+7Did you update to 2.1 ;-)
- Revolution101, on 09/12/2008, -0/+5did you have to turn it on?
- Reaktor5, on 09/12/2008, -0/+4Edit:
- xero9, on 09/12/2008, -2/+4Downloading the update now and going to upgrade at work using USB1.1 so this will be painful I imagine. Just wondering if the 3G reception is improved in this? I was just on a call with full bars and was cutting out pretty bad. Would like to see that fixed
- diggerhater, on 09/12/2008, -1/+6I was at 2 bars 3g before I updated... I now have full coverage. Seems to be fixed.
- blackinthmiddle, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3I've seen many instances (before the update, that is) where the number of bars didn't always indicate the type of reception your phone was getting. I'd say that the jury is still out.
- AnOMNOMymous, on 09/12/2008, -2/+1The reception is not better, the indicator for how good your reception is improved. Everyone saying they're getting "better service" only things so because of the improved icon.
- maxsunset, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1I hope this update fixes the reception issues on OG iphones as well! That has been driving me stark raving mad since 2.0 came out!!
- markadmin, on 09/13/2008, -2/+1Stark raving mad. You are definitely an I-Sheep.
- diggerhater, on 09/12/2008, -1/+6I was at 2 bars 3g before I updated... I now have full coverage. Seems to be fixed.
- diggymow, on 09/12/2008, -2/+5My 3G reception is better. Get two bars at home where I used to get none so I'm happy.
- kronzdigg, on 09/12/2008, -1/+82 bars. but does it work?
- diggymow, on 09/12/2008, -1/+6Yep I just tested it. Made a couple of calls and it's streaming youtube videos no problem.
- gr00vy, on 09/12/2008, -0/+4Now that is funny...
- Mareshalu, on 09/12/2008, -2/+1Funny I have 2 bars and can`t make any calls, sometimes i can get calls but drops 99% of`em. I hope I get at least 3 bars after upgrade is all I`m asking APPLE!
- kronzdigg, on 09/12/2008, -1/+82 bars. but does it work?
- jrod311, on 09/12/2008, -17/+8and still no MMS....
- shank2001, on 09/12/2008, -0/+9GOOD! MMS is a scam!
- baldmage, on 09/12/2008, -38/+1no one cares...
- MacParrot, on 09/12/2008, -0/+4Just a guess but I would think people with iPhones might care. Unless you're talking about your post and with a neg 25 diggs currently I can certainly believe that few care about what you have to say.
- Miamisun, on 09/12/2008, -2/+23Warning: Do not update the firmware while on airplane mode. Even though you are taking a risk of a call interrupting your update Airplane mode will cause an error which will disrupt the update. I learned this the hard way.
- skeen07, on 09/12/2008, -1/+115Don't update on an airplane, got it.
- kLacK, on 09/12/2008, -3/+41Don't update when your high either :(
- orangeguy94, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1I don't think I want to know what happened.
- NightmareFox, on 09/13/2008, -0/+1Updating your iPhone isn't normal.
...But on Meth, it is.
Meth
Not even once - jtjdt, on 09/13/2008, -0/+1If you accidentally install the update while in airplane mode try the following steps:
1: Slide for emergency
2: Attempt to dial any number
3: The phone should prompt that you are in airplane mode
4: Click the "Disable" button
5: The phone should now activate
- wkcrazyhorse, on 09/12/2008, -0/+8I just updated in airplane mode and it seems to be fine... o.O
- Miamisun, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3Well this is what the apple tech i spoke to on the phone to fix the problem stated. That the notes from other people calling about the same error basically stated that the common thread from all of these issues was airplane mode.
- breckinshire, on 09/12/2008, -2/+12iPhones can operate as aircraft, too? *****, I gotta get one. But how the hell do you fit a seat on it?
- Miamisun, on 09/12/2008, -0/+6oh you guys
- NaziHatinChimp, on 09/12/2008, -0/+8Hop in the Spruce Moose Smithers....
But sir it's just a model...
*Pulls Gun* I said hop in. - GliTCH82, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3Wow this is the giddiest I've seen Digg in a while. A new iPhone update comes out and it's like Christmas arrived early this year.
- giogalindo, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3it's like in transformers.
- utexas112, on 09/12/2008, -2/+16I ANSWERED a call while it was updating.. ended the call, replaced the iPhone in its cradle, and the update automatically continued. Twas impressed.
- phrozted, on 09/13/2008, -1/+1Twas impressive.
I was impressed.
- phrozted, on 09/13/2008, -1/+1Twas impressive.
- Johaen, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1I updated in Airplane mode. It worked just fine for me.
- drlha, on 09/12/2008, -0/+8Why would people update in AIrplane mode anyway? My guess is that the first thing Apple thought of in the update process was "make sure the update doesn't ***** up if someone calls you during the update".
- Johaen, on 09/12/2008, -4/+0A couple syncs ago, my gf called while I was syncing. After that sync, all my apps would close immediately after opening. I went through quite the hassle getting them working again. I don't know if it was just a coincidence that she called at the same time as the apps went to crap, but I decided it's better safe than sorry and just put in in Airplane mode.
- drlha, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1Johaen: That was a known bug that had nothing to do with your GF calling during a sync. I had the same issue a few weeks back.
- HolyChimp, on 09/12/2008, -1/+12I had that same problem when your GF called me during the 2.0.2 update.
- cheapotheclown, on 09/13/2008, -0/+3this comment was just an excuse to announce to Digg that you have a GF.
- spanglegluppet, on 09/13/2008, -0/+1Dump her.
- ZenFu, on 09/12/2008, -2/+1Just pull your SIM out before you update. Problem solved.
Sometimes the simplest solutions are usually the best ones. - astericks, on 09/13/2008, -0/+1I updated in airplane mode too and so far, so good.
- Vertexed, on 09/13/2008, -0/+1If you have trouble after updating in airplane mode, just attempt an emergency call (other than 911 of course) and it will prompt you to disable airplane mode. Cancel the call and you're good to go.
- wush, on 09/12/2008, -8/+7Did he say fewer app crashes or _no_ app crashes?
- skeen07, on 09/12/2008, -0/+5You must be using a screen reader. He said fewer.
- Diggnabbit, on 09/12/2008, -1/+24Why would he say no app crashes? That's an unfulfillable promise.
- brazzam, on 09/12/2008, -18/+2No Genius icon... did apple forget to put that in this update??? way to go.
- btschul, on 09/12/2008, -0/+8You're doing it wrong.
- brazzam, on 09/12/2008, -9/+1actually... i was doing it correctly... Apple just failed to mention that you have to do a complete sync after the upgrade to enable Genius.
- sleepwalkers, on 09/12/2008, -0/+9It's common sense that you'd need the Genius info from iTunes on your phone to actually use the Genius feature.
Otherwise, the iPhone says "Oh, you have no music on this thing. You might also like this other lack of music."
- sleepwalkers, on 09/12/2008, -0/+9It's common sense that you'd need the Genius info from iTunes on your phone to actually use the Genius feature.
- diggapleeeze, on 09/12/2008, -2/+32Really wanted background notifications. Wasn't this promised for September?
- adairnic, on 09/12/2008, -1/+8and then promised to be delayed about a month ago...
- eleazar123, on 09/12/2008, -0/+5Did they officially delay it? I thought they silently removed it from the 2.1 betas.
- Alphab, on 09/12/2008, -0/+2True, no official word from Apple bout this yet.
However, I'm sure eveyone will agree the most urgent thing to do was fix those bugs!
Apple most valuable asset is the reputation of "its just works"...
- adairnic, on 09/12/2008, -1/+8and then promised to be delayed about a month ago...
- test5477, on 09/12/2008, -2/+2Genius is listed at the top of the playlist screen. Play a song then hit the Genius, works very well.
- Diggnabbit, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1I get the "Genius" option on the Playlist screen. But shouldn't there be a "Genius" icon when you're just playing a song? Why do I have to hit "Genius" then scroll through all of my songs to find the one to base it on, instead of it basing it on the currently playing song?
Or, am I missing something?- Diggnabbit, on 09/12/2008, -0/+4EDIT: I'm missing something, because I'm a moron. There's a Genius icon right in the middle of the controls while playing a song.
- BumontheRun, on 09/12/2008, -3/+0To quote AnOMNOMymous, "It's only an edit if you edited your original post."
- Diggnabbit, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1I get the "Genius" option on the Playlist screen. But shouldn't there be a "Genius" icon when you're just playing a song? - carl67lp, on 09/12/2008, -4/+8I'm *still* getting 0xE800002E errors when doing App updates. I'm quite tired of having to uninstall the app only to lose data when I reinstall it.
This, to me, is quite unacceptable.- Erectile, on 09/12/2008, -3/+6But exactly how unacceptable is it, really?
- carl67lp, on 09/12/2008, -0/+5Quite.
- Leehro, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1You need to remove the apps from iTunes and the iPhone and redownload them from the store. They won't charge you but the problem lies with your application bundles in iTunes.
- carl67lp, on 09/12/2008, -0/+2Doesn't seem to make a difference. It keeps happening on the same apps, no matter how often I do this.
- rajkalex, on 09/13/2008, -0/+1Tried that. No luck here either. Very frustrating problem. It was the first thing I checked after the update.
- habbofresh, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1delete your backup and try again.
- nextbigthang, on 09/12/2008, -0/+2i get this same problem. i deleted every app, redownloaded them, and reinstalled them and 1 of the 5 apps started working again but the rest i still get the 0xE800002E error.
- tublo, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1Delete every app from your phone and your computer. Make sure you empty the trash too. Then download all the apps again through iTunes on your computer. It worked for me.
- circuskid, on 09/12/2008, -0/+0I used to get this.. I called apple and they replaced my phone.
- nolemonplease, on 09/12/2008, -0/+2Try this? http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1702
- Erectile, on 09/12/2008, -3/+6But exactly how unacceptable is it, really?
- macslut, on 09/12/2008, -5/+98There is no update until Pwnage says there's an update!
- sirfergy, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1If you only want unlock, does updating to 2.1 break the pwnage unlock?
- habbofresh, on 09/12/2008, -1/+1it didn't for me.
- BrendanSheehan, on 09/12/2008, -0/+8I have an unlocked 2G American iPhone here in Ireland, I used the 2.0 PwnageTool to unlock and jailbreak my iPhone. I have since updated to 2.0.1, 2.0.2 and 2.1 without open the PwnageTool app, it looks like Apple likes the fact they I'm buying a load of apps, because they are no longer (at least in my case) re-locking my phone in updates.
Worry free updates for me, I just hit update.
P.S. My sync times are now about 13 seconds. At least 10x faster. - zpjet, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1i had uk iphone with o2, then unlocked with pwnage when upgraded to 3g to use the original with vodafone for my job, i believe it was 2.0.1, then did pwnage again few days after 2.0.2, but now did only itunes update to 2.1 and it's all dandy although the installer app is gone which i don't care about as all i need is second phone and the one i got from my employer sucks.
i hope apple just stops bothering about people using other sim cards. in your face, o2 - i upgraded to new phone yet they didn't unlock my old one although it was completly out of any contract.
- sirfergy, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1If you only want unlock, does updating to 2.1 break the pwnage unlock?
- lidflipper, on 09/12/2008, -15/+10Anyone else HATE how safari now defaults to the mobile version of some web pages? For examples www.msnbc.com now uses the mobile version. I can't figure out how to go to the original! Blah! CNN does the same thing.
- btschul, on 09/12/2008, -2/+9Look for a link on the web page that says "classic" or "regular" site. I know a lot of sites like google and amazon do that. They default to the mobile site but provide a link to the normal site.
- JimmyG10, on 09/12/2008, -10/+5I totally agree. This is supposed to be "the internet internet" right?
- omarqaz7, on 09/13/2008, -0/+4It's not up to Safari. The server decides what webpage to return.
- AggieTales, on 09/12/2008, -4/+43This is not Apple's fault, it's the page designers. They have a script that checks what browser you're using and it sees it's Mobile Safari so they forward you to their mobile page instead.....
- lidflipper, on 09/12/2008, -14/+1Hmmm. Worked fine until I updated last night. Why is Apple now telling sites it's mobile now? Seems like an oversite.
- btschul, on 09/12/2008, -2/+6"Hmmm. Worked fine until I updated last night. Why is Apple now telling sites it's mobile now? Seems like an oversite."
My iPod Touch has always gone to the mobile version of google and amazon and gmail by default.
- xsecretfiles, on 09/12/2008, -5/+14...it could be because you are surfing the net on a mobile device???
- StevieG, on 09/12/2008, -3/+18This is the site detecting that you are on a mobile device, not Safari doing it at all.
- lidflipper, on 09/12/2008, -13/+1I really don't buy that (even though I know that's technically what's happening). It NEVER did this prior to the update. Therefore it has to be a new way Safari is identifying itself in 2.1.
- rumblestrut, on 09/12/2008, -1/+9You don't have to "buy it." As a developer, let me tell you that it's true.
That is done on the server side, not the client. - lidflipper, on 09/12/2008, -10/+1Woah, calm down. I know that's how it works on the server side. The sever checks the client, and displays the page as normal or mobile. Before the update though, Safari must had represented itself as "Normal" as opposed to "Mobile."
- godofpumpkins, on 09/12/2008, -0/+6lidflipper: all mobilesafari has ever done is identify itself as mobilesafari, with a version number and the OS it's running on. They don't typically identify themselves as "mobile" or "desktop" browsers. If the site is now taking the mobilesafari identifier and using it to redirect you to the mobile site, then it's probably something broken in how the site is detecting the browser (maybe it's expecting a particular version of mobilesafari and if it doesn't see that, it just looks for the word mobile and gives you the mobile page if it finds it)
- lidflipper, on 09/12/2008, -4/+3Hmmmm, well I guess both CNN and MSNBC both changed the way their websites handles "mobilesafari" at the exact same moment that I updated to 2.1.
I don't know why I'm getting dug down here. Anyone with an iPhone/Touch that is pre 2.1 will be directed to the "normal" versions of these two sites. While 2.1 will send you to the mobile versions. That's fact. - fr34k5h0w, on 09/12/2008, -0/+5MSNBC on my jailbroken iPod Touch firmware 2.0.2 sends me to mobile MSNBC. Same with CNN.
- nicc, on 09/12/2008, -0/+5lidflipper, cnn and amazon have always given me their mobile page on my iphone.
I havent updated to 2.1 yet... - lidflipper, on 09/12/2008, -3/+1Hmmm, well I went from 1.7 -> 2.1 so maybe that had something to do with it.
- RobotBuddha, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3I'm still on 2.0.1 and on trying cnn.com I was redirected to m.cnn.com. Mobile version for msnbc as well.
- adairnic, on 09/12/2008, -4/+10that isn't safari's fault, it is the website that redirects mobile safari to their mobile version. apparently, they figure thats what people want. it is horribly annoying though.
- Radan, on 09/12/2008, -4/+6Though that is most likely not Safari, but the page itself that redirects mobile users to their mobile sites.
- JasonCox, on 09/12/2008, -4/+5Safari doesn't do that. The content provider (ex: CNN.com) has a script on their site that does that. It's actually pretty simple to setup.
- dm33, on 09/12/2008, -3/+2the website determines that. Most sites also let you access their main site. But not msnbc.
- robbob, on 09/12/2008, -4/+2Its the website
- sleepwalkers, on 09/12/2008, -2/+10Holy *****, how many people have to say "No, it's not Safari, it's the site" in a row before someone decides that the point has been driven home enough?
- Sinestro, on 09/12/2008, -2/+4Wow.
I got to this thread, thought 'you're wrong, its the site' because, well, that's correct.
HOWEVER, i loaded cnn.com (bookmarked on my phone as www.cnn.com with 2.0.2 and it took me to the regular site.
10 minutes later with 2.1 the same bookmark took me to their mobile site.
SUCK IT, sleepwalkers, robbob, dm33, JasonCox, Radan, adairnic, StevieG, xsecretfiles, and AggieTales
lidflipper was right
(its my invention... i call it the Jump to conclusions mat)- lidflipper, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1Awesome. I was begging to think i was loosing my mind. Now if I could only find a fix...
- Sinestro, on 09/12/2008, -0/+2for bookmarked websites, cnn for example, just delete your old bookmark and replace it with the url for their full site. I replaced www.cnn.com with www.cnn.com/index.html
sucks for unbookmarked sites though.
- ShuttleDisaster, on 09/12/2008, -2/+20Wow, seems to be a great update.
- Havent noticed any text lag.
- 3g DL speeds seem to be a bit faster.
- Went from consistent 1 bar of 3g service in my dorm room, to consistent 5 bar service.
- Contacts load faster.- gader, on 09/12/2008, -1/+2Second everything. Went from 0 - 1 bars to 5 at my home. A feat NO phone has been able to accomplish yet.
- Oooskar, on 09/13/2008, -1/+0You know that the only thing they changed was the mapping of signal strength to the number of bars displayed?
- ShuttleDisaster, on 09/13/2008, -0/+2well since I can actually make calls consistently from my room now, Id say thats not entirely true
- VidaGeek, on 09/12/2008, -6/+4Installed it - seems to work ok except for the fact the very first phone call I was on dropped a few minutes into it.
If I turn 3G off, I never have a dropped call.
And - strangely enough.... it drops very shortly after an email sync has happened (I heard the ding / felt the buzz, 10 seconds later the call dropped). This has been the pattern all along since I bought this thing on day #1 - if I have 3G enabled, calls drop all the time (no exaggeration - I was on a 30 minute call, and had to call back 7 times - we were both stationary). This problem happens in L.A., NY and now in PA during the last few months. I think it is safe to say that there is an issue with the phone and not the network.- shank2001, on 09/12/2008, -1/+1With YOUR phone you mean. I live in the orange county and go up to LA all the time. I don't drop calls on 3G.
- shank2001, on 09/12/2008, -1/+1With YOUR phone you mean. I live in the orange county and go up to LA all the time. I don't drop calls on 3G.
- pumah, on 09/12/2008, -1/+5*In ipod mode, in the songs tab, album-band info displayed under song name. Album view seems a little different too.
*Also noticed when scrolling through stuff in ipod mode, it's much more responsive when selecting the letter at the right edge of the screen. No lag/delay.
Now they just need the info to scroll at the top when playing a song and the title is too long. Don't understand why they didn't do that in the first place. - phrozen209, on 09/12/2008, -5/+5copy-paste=pen and paper...:P

Seriously though, any update from the Dev Team?- Mareshalu, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1it just came out dude wtf do u think they are Geniuses? :/
- tnoy, on 09/12/2008, -0/+13Yes.

- robz2k, on 09/12/2008, -6/+3omg! i hit update 2 hours ago and its still backing up my phone. they better have fixed this!!!
- Diggnabbit, on 09/12/2008, -0/+4They did.
- Tron007, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3dude u knew the update was coming..why didnt u back up your phone last night so that today once 2.1 came out u can just download and install....
- jfulls, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3Seems a lot more snappy all around, works as expected.
The backup is MUCH faster, but nothing too particularly spectacular. - puter, on 09/12/2008, -1/+1But does it push/fetch subfolders...christ...that's all I need for it to be useful in the workplace...I'd even take that over copy and paste (although that is a close one over which I want more).
- shank2001, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1No thanks! Unless they let you choose which folders get pushed I would rather they don't enable it at all. I have filters that move emails into folders that I don't want synced to my iPhone. I do NOT want those pushed!!
- GreenAlien, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1I suspect puter was asking for the option, not for it to be forced on everyone.
- puter, on 09/13/2008, -0/+0I was, and I wrote an entire reply to his post, it was there for a few hours and now it is gone.
wtf?
I basically said you should be able to specify it per-folder
- puter, on 09/13/2008, -0/+0I was, and I wrote an entire reply to his post, it was there for a few hours and now it is gone.
- shank2001, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1No thanks! Unless they let you choose which folders get pushed I would rather they don't enable it at all. I have filters that move emails into folders that I don't want synced to my iPhone. I do NOT want those pushed!!
- jxdx, on 09/12/2008, -9/+4Screw the rumors, 2.1 fixed bugs, has Genius Playlist, added a couple "Settings" for txt messaging and "Security" (wipe data after 10 tries)... That's it fellas... Let's not get excited when we read a rumor, our expectations seem to grow quite a bit with them suckers makin up crap :p now my heart is crushed! :(...
- WestonP, on 09/12/2008, -1/+3Installed it about an hour ago... so far so good, and apps seem to install/update faster. I'm just hoping that Safari wont crash so easily anymore...
- xsecretfiles, on 09/12/2008, -9/+5damn u apple, I cheked this morning and there was nothing.....now I have to wait until I get off work
:(- mediaspree, on 09/12/2008, -0/+20Just quit. This update is FAR to important for you to wait.
- jpop, on 09/12/2008, -1/+21At least Apple's giving more info in the notes other than "bug fixes".
- jamesduh, on 09/12/2008, -2/+5You still can't spell "Flickr" without deleting the 'e' and replacing with the 'r'.
EDIT: and the backup is still forever.- puter, on 09/12/2008, -2/+2Is that actually a big deal for you?
I think there should be things way higher on their priority list than some dictionary updates. - puter, on 09/12/2008, -0/+5Your original backup?
you wont see an improvement until you have actually pushed the firmware. I wouldn't be surprised if you had to do a second backup before you saw an improvement since they probably improved the backup data structure and you will need a backup from that firmware in that format. - Zippo, on 09/12/2008, -1/+16Just hit the X button whenever it suggests "Flicker" to cancel the autocorrect. It learns.
- nicc, on 09/12/2008, -7/+3I shouldnt have to hit the "x".
I understand that many people use it and like it, but there are a lot of us that do NOT like it and want it gone.
why cant there be a check box in settings to disable the spell checker? - chrismusaf, on 09/12/2008, -1/+2nicc, you used to be able to turn it off, but they got rid of the option in favor of learning. You only have to hit the x once and never again for that word.
- nicc, on 09/12/2008, -7/+3I shouldnt have to hit the "x".
- SethBoy, on 09/12/2008, -0/+6Type "Flick", then drag your finger to R when typing the last character.
- puter, on 09/12/2008, -2/+2Is that actually a big deal for you?
- robbob, on 09/12/2008, -7/+4Genius doesn't work for me if its never heard of bands I listen to.
It did recognize one sone and recommended another song already in my library.
...I give Genius a dunce cap- Diggnabbit, on 09/12/2008, -0/+6It's supposed to recommend songs in your library (on the iPhone).
In iTunes it recommends both songs on the iTunes store (in the sidebar) and in your library (with the button).- nicc, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1Genius recommends songs that I already have for the playlist, but it doesnt give me anything in the "bar" section...it sits empty!
- bwdd, on 09/13/2008, -0/+1Unfortunately for me, my little sister decided to register her itunes money in my account.
Now I have the blood brothers, the locust, radiohead.... aly and aj, the jonas brothers, and my chemical romance - all recommended for me.
Hot piss.
- skidooer, on 09/12/2008, -1/+2I have the same problem. And it's not like the bands I listen to are all that obscure. When I finally track down an artist it does recognize, it seems like it spits out the same genius list every time. Cool concept, but not very useful as implemented.
- webzyne, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1Give it time, it's supposed to get more accurate once the millions of people start using it. It works by using other people's data.
I think in time, it could be REALLY accurate. - RobSaint, on 09/13/2008, -0/+1I found it was really good with my tracks as long as you update the genius on iTunes whenever you add music to it.

- BrendanSheehan, on 09/12/2008, -1/+5My syncing now takes about 13 seconds.
Down from 2 - 6 minutes. - sputza, on 09/12/2008, -5/+3Direct Link: http://www.apple.com/iphone/softwareupdate/
- mitchnetzer, on 09/12/2008, -8/+4Cool, but when are we going to see an update that includes syncing tasks from ical to my iphone?!?! It's a major problem that needs to be fixed NOW!
- mattb19us, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3Oh I couldn't agree more! I input homework and other school related to-do's into iCal but of course MobileMe doesn't push those. I would LOVE to see that integrated!
- TheKappa, on 09/13/2008, -0/+1Or how about syncing the notes from my computer to my iphone? I want that!
- robertgama, on 09/13/2008, -0/+0My iPhone is on it's way now, but I would have thought that feature was a no brainer. Hmm, I guess I'll have to use Remember the Milk (rtm) as my main way to track tasks. Check it out if you haven't already.
Cheers.
- habbofresh, on 09/12/2008, -10/+3it's called a user agent string
- DJRobX, on 09/12/2008, -1/+1On-phone App Store updates and installs are MUCH faster. No longer getting stuck on "Installing..."
