Apple to release two iPhone models, one with WiFi
appleinsider.com — Apple Computer plans to introduce two iPod-based cell phone models in the first quarter of 2007. One model will be a smart phone, including integrated keyboard, video and music capability, while the other model will be a slimmer phone with just music functionality.

- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4All AppleInsider does by reporting this crap is hurt iPod sales during the holiday season, because most who were thinking about purchasing an iPod may wait for one of these iPhones if they would prefer more functionality than just music, and I am one of them. I want friggin' OS X mobile, wireless, syncing to the apps on my desktop. I am willing to wait, but if Apple was smart, they would allow pre-orders during the holiday season, so they can prove iPod sales were down due to the iPhone introduction.

With the death of the Palm OS, I need a proper mobile OS for the future, because Windows Mobile and Symbian just aren't going to cut it for me.
Sadly, though, I think this is just another case of wishful thinking. Apple is taking over the place of the NSA or the CIA in the "I just know they're working on it" field:
"Wouldn't it be nice if (technology A) could do (thing B)?"

The moral of the story may be this: if a company's NOT planning on creating a product, but said concept enjoys the level of interest that the iPhone has seen, they'd be fools not to take that and run.

With Wi-fi and Skype so I can make wireless VOIP calls and not have to deal with any ***** wireless provider and their ***** contracts. Price it at $250 with a decent battery (3-4 days) and you've sold me.

- LaserLine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a great idea and they already have some of these available, but isn't the problem more along the lines of WiFi (or WiMax) availablility. Verizon has an unlimited internet plan for $80/month, but requires a big PCMCIA card to put into your laptop and then what happens when I only get their 14.4kbps coverage where they high speed network isn't available. Not only that after I spend $80/month I need a phone number and I want to make and recive calls how much extra is that going to cost. I am optimistic however, but I'd be willing to pay $60 for unlimited internet (with no ports blocked or any of that *****) and have a phone number where I can make unlimited voip in and out calls. 2 years until were there? I hope this spurs open the "wireless networks."

What the rumour/leak brings new to the table is that there will be two different models. Great!

- CountSessine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here's a question - assuming that Apple does indeed make a smartphone/iphone/whatever, is it going to be GSM or will it be IS-95 CDMA? There was some sort of quote from a T-Mobile exec a little while ago that suggested they were working with Apple on something, which would mean it would be GSM. Of course that means that all of the Verizon and Sprint users would be right out of luck.
This actually makes a lot of sense - IS-95 is a closed market where carriers can dictate terms to phone makers. Important phone features like bluetooth file transfers that interfere with the carrier's business objectives are commonly disabled. And just look at all of the trouble Verizon put Motorola through over the design changes they wanted made to the Q. I can't imagine Apple would put up with that.
