- JohanMarcusGuy, on 08/30/2008, -48/+35Digg,
My wife of seventeen months left me yesterday. She wrote a note atop of our eight-year old son's favorite picture, and as sad as this makes me, what gets me the most is how short the note itself is; as though is seeks to point out how hollow this relationship has been the whole time.
You see, I too owned an ipod. I even had it connected to my dodge neon via technical wiring and custom radio that I had installed at BestBuy. Just last month she told me that she was concerned that I cared more about the car than her.
I've been writing on Digg to try and relieve the pain, but I can only relive it -- the more I try to forget the more my emotions well up inside. I can't help but think that she was right, my dodge neon has been the most important thing to me since I bought it back in two-thousand and five. Since then, I've let the rest of my life go to shambles.
Often times, I'll drive around for thirty or forty minutes a day, trying to get my fix, trying to forget about the responsibilities and mistakes.
Now all I can remember is the despair, I've been too focused on my lifestyle, too focused on being the number one Ohio recreational laser tag division coach. Let me tell you the truth, being on top means nothing if you don't have anyone to share it with.
Lately, I've just been trying to impress you, and to be honest I don't actually build battle-bots or work for the mafia.
I'm sorry for deceiving you. Even now as I post this I feel that there's nothing I can do, in becoming one of the top Digg users of all time in the last few days, I've lost sight of myself even more.
I remember the good times -- before I let my success get in the way -- we'd go out for hours playing ultimate frisbee with our dog Charles Snoodler. When he caught that frisbee, it was a thing of magic, as though he defied the laws of physics for just a moment.
But now, my car and my dog are gone, and i'm left with nothing. Nothing but time.
Is there someone you know and you're loving them so, but taking it all for granted?
Think about it. Don't try to be successful like me, you'll only end up hurt.

- Scriabin, on 08/30/2008, -0/+17This is the most well written satirical character I've ever seen on Digg--some would call him a troll, but he's an advanced troll, a very good troll, a clever and witty troll, so it's not as bad as it seems, because he's often very funny, unless you're too dense to get it. Does this mean we're going culturally backwards or forwards though? Because it seems few get him, based on how his comments are constantly dugg down dramatically, but a FEW are getting him, which nurtures my hope for those with a decent reading ability.

- cowsgoquack101, on 08/30/2008, -8/+45I do *****. It works great, and it will last longer than your new iPod will any day. It's been beaten with your mom's ***** and it still works.
- subxero37, on 08/30/2008, -2/+17I saw the picture and thought to myself, "Yes! Someone out there still uses a 4th-gen iPod!"
I love mine; the battery still lasts forever, and it works just fine. I don't need to watch movies when I'm driving, or when I'm at work, and if I'm at home, I have other ways to do it. I don't care about what color things are when I pick a song. I don't need games or other software for it. What I use is perfect. I'm getting really tired of people talking down about the electronics and devices that other people use because of the misconception that they're 'out of date' -- for example, my Athlon 64 3000+ (single core) w/ 1 GB of RAM and a 6600 LE does exactly (exactly!) what I need it to do, so why do I care how 'out of date' it is? I don't. Go tell somebody else how leet you are.- lordsteve, on 08/30/2008, -5/+1I have an iPhone. I've heard from numerous sources "What's the point? I don't need my phone to play music or play games or surf the internet - that's what I have my computer or my radio or my 360 for." Well, the point is that if you have one device that does all this you can sell all the other stuff you've got and simplify your life with a single device. Do you NEED to do that? No, of course not, but that's not the point. It makes life easier and makes you more productive if you use it correctly. I'm not saying your way is wrong, I'm just saying my way isn't wrong either. You've got a bunch of devices, I have just one, you like your devices, I like my single device. I guess my point is don't be a douche about it no matter what side you're on.
- gzusfreak, on 08/31/2008, -0/+2Point me to the device that does everything I need it to do (correctly and error free) and I will sell everything else. Until that device comes out, though, Ill be using my cell phone, iPod, DVD player, TV, and computer. Separately.
- NodOfficer, on 08/30/2008, -0/+3I use a 4th gen. It runs on Linux.
- sdrawkcaB, on 08/30/2008, -0/+1Mine survived being slammed in a car door twice (broke screen) and hundreds of drops. It did die of harddrive failure though a few months ago.
- compulsive1, on 08/31/2008, -0/+2It's the best sounding iPod ever made! The converters in it and the analog line drivers were not topped since. I use it to tune large commercial sound systems and would never switch to another iPod. Apple lossless files sound as good as a high end CD player on a 4th gen iPod. I'll stick with it for as long as I can.
- BoSuu, on 08/31/2008, -0/+1I use a 1st gen... that being said it only works for an hour at best when not plugged in :x
- quomen, on 08/30/2008, -34/+15This is incredibly lame.
- themadhatter444, on 08/30/2008, -17/+387Digg users are too young to know what's inside the iPod.

Those were the days.- AzureRise, on 08/30/2008, -22/+9Set your preferences and you will see is tech. It's not that ***** hard.
- gemmakicn, on 08/30/2008, -3/+13Now all they care about is an idiot who knows nothing about economics...
- BetterOffEd, on 08/30/2008, -20/+4"Waahh.... This is *****!! Why should I give I ***** about sports, business, women, and the presidential race? I have all I could ever need with articles glorifying Ubuntu, Wii, PS3, and iPhone!! I mean... I never go outside anyway so,..."
Question for you: Then why are you still here reading, logging in, and commenting?
. - Crabcakes, on 08/31/2008, -2/+24Maybe because he stills comes to this site every once in a while in hopes that one day it won't be the ***** it has become. The comments used to be intelligent and sometimes witty around here. Now it's a bunch of 14-16 year old kids who think they're smart and know it all making ***** comments similar to yours. Have a nice day.
- BetterOffEd, on 08/31/2008, -1/+1I clearly don't know it all, and would never comment as if I did. But how exactly was his comment intelligent? And how exactly was yours? How are either of you *adding* anything?
So my question still remains... If you're so pissed about the direction in which Digg has gone and it means that much to you, then by all means send a nasty comment-card-style message to Kevin Rose. But why log in and bitch about Digg within the comments? What does that accomplish? Clearly it can't be that bad if you're continually patronizing the site, contributing, and commenting--which, judging by your comment histories, *both* of you are still doing.
So either the site doesn't suck, or both of you are completely full of *****. Which is it?

- aresgunther, on 08/30/2008, -13/+33No, that's the Zune you're thinking of.
- masterkenobi, on 08/30/2008, -11/+4@aresgunther
I'm gonna take a stab in the dark and guess that you never used a Zune before, and that you're just another Apple fanboy trying to say something you think is witty.
FYI, Zune > Ipod
/formerly owned 3 ipods before switching- comwiz7, on 08/30/2008, -4/+3Well...a Zune is better than the iPod classic. But nothing can touch the iPod touch. It's the greatest little device in history. Worth every penny. All 40000.
- SnowflakePillow, on 08/30/2008, -3/+3When even the dude with 3 Zune tattoos ditches his Zune for an iPod, it becomes rather easy to pick the better one objectively.
- iChainsaw, on 08/31/2008, -1/+4"before switching"? Switching? What the *****, it's a media player...not a way of life. Goddamn.
- burkhartmj, on 08/31/2008, -1/+3Yes, because the Zune guy was the peak of reasoning and judgement.
- Macintoshreader, on 08/31/2008, -1/+0"FYI, Zune > Ipod"
In exactly what way is the Zune better? The iPod Classic gets on average 35 hours of continuous music playback; Zune gets 22. If you have Wireless turned on, it drops to 20 hours. The "Extra" features in the Zune such as the radio, wireless sync and the "squirt" are totally useless. Who the hell listens to radio and why would I want to listen to songs for just 3 times? The Wireless Sync takes a lot more time than USB 2.0.
The iPod supports more music and photo formats, not to mention that it looks better. No matter what, the Zune is still an iPod wannabe that doesn't sell.
PS: I forgot to mention that the Zune software is buggy, lacks a lot of features in comparison to iTunes and that the Zune Marketplace has a lot less songs, videos and podcasts than the iTunes Store.
Looks like the only fanboy is you, after all. - masterkenobi, on 08/31/2008, -0/+21st ipod: Battery doesn't hold a charge for longer than 10 minutes (retired a bit under 2 years)
2nd Ipod: Hard drive failed (retired a little after a year)
3rd Ipod: Logic board failed (retired a little after a year)
I took my final ipod to the Apple "genius" bar, and without batting an eye, the douchebag told me that all he can offer is 10% off of my next ipod, or repair the current one for $150.
The things I like about the Zune is that I like the Zune software more than the iTunes software. Also, the Zune interface is nicer and sexier than the ipod. You can also play Divx videos from the Zune (after a registry hack). I also like how it docks seamlessly with my Xbox360. I can go on about the features I like about the Zune, but really, what's the point of the ipod when it dies after a year? I don't know about you, but dropping $250+/year for an mp3 player would get old for me. Luckily, all three were gifts.
And the Zune tattoo guy? I mean c'mon, why would anyone treat a guy with a Zune tattoo seriously? Would you treat a guy with an Apple logo on his asscheek with any seriousness? Oh wait, sorry, I didn't know you had one.
And Macintoshreader, from the looks of it, you sound like the posterboy Apple fanboy based on your comment history. And a huge douchebag at that.
P.S. How many of you actually used a Zune? - Red1Delta, on 08/31/2008, -0/+2I still have my 30gb Zune. 2 years strong baby.

Then the tape would break. - comwiz7, on 08/30/2008, -1/+4Actually, I'm 17 and I remember cassette tapes. CDs were around but somehow everything I owned was cassette and I went straight to iPods after that.
- samimnot, on 08/31/2008, -1/+0yeah...iPod is definitely the thing to have now. I still have an old Tascam cassette player hooked up in my studio. Kinda fun pulling out some old tapes, now and then. But man....lol, they just sound horrible, in comparison.

tapes were pretty much non-existent at that point. Unless we're to assume you were rocking it hard core as a 2 year old and built your music collection then and never added anything.. - ChromaVita, on 08/31/2008, -0/+2He listened to Raffi well through sophomore year...

- isayre020888, on 08/30/2008, -1/+4That reminds me, how exactly do the ipod adapters for your tape deck work?
- JFitzpatrick, on 08/30/2008, -0/+5In short: the adapter you put into the cassette deck is just a hollow dummy tape that houses a magnetic coil in the spot where the tape would actually be read by the head of the tape deck. Plug the adapter into a sound source such as an iPod and the electric impulses being sent down the wire are converted to a magnetic field in real time. Music from the iPod becomes music from the car stereo.
Signal from headphone wire -> magnetic resistance in dummy head in fake cassette tape -> deck reads and converts magnetic signal into sound out of stereo system.
Anyway else can clarify, I'm sure there are more things in the dummy tape like a resister or two... but I know you can build a ghetto DIY tape adapater out of nothing but copper wire, a plastic tape shell, and a headphone cord. - Jennadickes, on 08/31/2008, -0/+2Speaking of which, I love my tape adapter. I paid a whole 5 dollars for it and it's lasted me about 4 years of nearly daily use and a bunch of long road trips. Screw those other adapters they sell for $30-50
