Chris Pirillo Launches Digg, For iPhone Applications
iphone.lockergnome.com — The idea is similar to Digg in that you can submit iPhone apps and people can vote them up or down, giving you a nice community snapshot of what app is performing, and what app isn't at any given time.Sure, you can read reviews in the Apple Store, but you don't get the full story like you do on a site with simplicity and ease of use.
- 984 diggs
- digg it
- Babblin5, on 07/16/2008, -2/+25Nice idea! Never trust the salesman...
- andywu92, on 07/16/2008, -6/+1Except the employees who work at Apple
- manatee, on 07/16/2008, -5/+10Hmm... where to download the slinkset code so we can start our own digg clones? :)
- cgruber, on 07/16/2008, -3/+6
$digg_count = read_database($digg_count);
Digg_clicked($digg_count)
{ write_database($digg_count++); }
Bury_clicked($digg_count)
{ write_database($digg_count--); }
A digg concept page is pretty simple, it's the scalability and some of the other features that start to get complex. - paladin144, on 07/16/2008, -1/+2Reddit is open source now. Why not steal (er... "share") their code?

- jdills1196, on 07/16/2008, -6/+5cool
- patrickvegeta, on 07/16/2008, -6/+5awesome!
- creamhackered, on 07/16/2008, -8/+5good idea, it seems you only find out about iPhone apps by word of mouth at the moment
- BoneStamp, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5.... plus digg, engadget, tuaw, and don't forget the iTunes store.
- drewolanoff, on 07/16/2008, -4/+7woot!
- lecturethis, on 07/16/2008, -6/+4all hail hynophone....?
- Shreyasva, on 07/16/2008, -2/+9thers a similar thing for mac software http://osx.iusethis.com/
- kris33, on 07/16/2008, -0/+4It would me much cooler if iusethis added a section for iPhone applications. This is a cool proof-of-concept, but has way too few features to be really useful.
- rodrigo74, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1They probably will, one of these days while I was browsing iusethis I was prompted for the password of iphone.iusethis.com, after a couple of hours this prompt stopped showing, a temporary bug but very telling...
iusethis.com is great, especially in conjuction with AppFresh.

- reggplant, on 07/16/2008, -2/+18Thats based on the reddit source code which slinkset host for anyone to make their own social link board: http://code.reddit.com/ same as the techrunch version: http://technews.techcrunch.com/
- bgibson, on 07/16/2008, -3/+3It's actually using hosted app called slinkset, http://slinkset.com/
- MavRevMatt, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1He said that.
- bgibson, on 07/16/2008, -0/+0Yeah. Whoops. I just looked at the reddit link. Sorry.
Anyways, slinkset is not based on reddit.
- MavRevMatt, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1I was playing around with the service earlier, it's actually quite functional for what it does.
- Lemon, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Yeah but using "Slinkset" in the title instead of Digg wouldn't have made front page.
- bgibson, on 07/16/2008, -3/+3It's actually using hosted app called slinkset, http://slinkset.com/
- Zippo, on 07/16/2008, -1/+9I look forward to more real applications. A lot of the current iPhone apps feel more like Dashboard widgets.
- BoonTobias, on 07/16/2008, -4/+33babyman gaming that ***** in 3...2...
- acevoncash, on 07/16/2008, -3/+4greedy!
- BoneStamp, on 07/16/2008, -4/+4I'd say it's more like reddit than digg... probably based on the reddit source.
- airj1012, on 07/16/2008, -3/+3Pretty cool, but I wish it had more information or different links. Possibly a link with a description of the application or to the developers website. Right now the only link is to the App Store so you can actually download the application. I rather learn about the application before I launch iTunes and visit the applications page. Just a thought.
- NRay7882, on 07/16/2008, -7/+5I went up and down the page twice looking for a Digg app. Me stupid. Me frown.
- ftx437, on 07/16/2008, -10/+5WOW! hopefully the fanboys will spend there time on that instead of digg.
- ProjectGSX, on 07/16/2008, -2/+7This is a pretty cool idea. The iTunes store has a built in rating system, but its full of idiots. People giving an app 0 stars because they cant figure out how to install it. Or people giving an app 0 stars when the text of their review says its AWESOME!!@!.
- avanor, on 07/16/2008, -9/+4I thought his was a digg app...LAME
i want a digg app
MAKE ONE!- themuffinman, on 07/16/2008, -3/+1NetNewsWire
- nicc, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1wow, you can log into Digg, post comments and read more than 5 of the so called "top" comments through NetNewsWire?
impressive...

- themuffinman, on 07/16/2008, -3/+1NetNewsWire
- bcos, on 07/16/2008, -6/+2#18 is a Wallpaper Pack that costs $8. :|
This is a great idea and I'm sure it will be more accurate when more people use this. - hamburgers, on 07/16/2008, -11/+8Title should read "world's biggest dork creates world's most boring site"
- chicken101, on 07/16/2008, -3/+5The least constructive digg comment ever...
- toekneebullard, on 07/16/2008, -2/+3So this should work about as good as the Digg podcast section right?
- dshPls, on 07/16/2008, -5/+14This is the worst looking website ever. I'm not 140 years old and I don't need a login screen that looks like this: http://slinkset.com/sessions/new?m=required&n=%2F& ...
- bte101, on 07/16/2008, -0/+12Agreed it looks horrible on desktop, but it is just the right size for viewing on an iPhone.
- heathuff23, on 07/16/2008, -1/+5Be thankful you don't have to see this every time:
http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/34/2006/08/p ...- dshPls, on 07/16/2008, -1/+6CANT UNSEE
- m3mn0n, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1OH MY GOD I JUST SAW HIM NAKED.
MY EYES... THEY BURN !
- anarchyx34, on 07/16/2008, -1/+2Retard. It's supposed to be viewed on the Iphone, where it's formatted perfectly.
- BrendanSheehan, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1You are correct Sir.
- tysonwilliams, on 07/16/2008, -6/+3This is useless concept and the site even does look good.
- rev4bart, on 07/16/2008, -3/+10Why is this guy think he is relevant? Stick to what you did 4-5 years ago and tell me how I should fix my printer or clean my registry.
Didn't he launch some massive development semantic web project before? I know he got burned recently after pitching a pyramid scheme company that went under recently.- dshPls, on 07/16/2008, -4/+8Not to mention he's annoying as *****. Call for Help was a pile back in the day.
- ryleyleckie, on 07/16/2008, -3/+4dugg for introducing me to aurora feint
- fahrvergnuugen, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2Aurora Feint FTW. Great game, easily the best free app so far.
- lordtyros, on 07/16/2008, -1/+2Cube Runner and Pandora beg to differ
- nutmac, on 07/16/2008, -0/+0In the end, Aurora Feint is just a fancy Bejeweled, but what an execution it is. And the fact that it's free puts most commercial games to shame (including Bejeweled, which costs $9.99).
- fahrvergnuugen, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2Aurora Feint FTW. Great game, easily the best free app so far.
- mikeevegas, on 07/16/2008, -1/+5good idea, but the site looks a bit on the ghetto side. Hopefully future revisions will improve ui.
- Stoyanov, on 07/16/2008, -2/+2Web 2.0-ish text boxes and buttons = worst design ever, what is with the 10-foot-like experience? I can't believe this trend is growing.
Oh, and thanks to Microsoft for the zooming feature in Internet Explorer 8. - rainman513, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3a little misleading title there. i thought i was gonna find a digg app for the iphone/ipod. still digg it though.
- Vauce, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1A few things that would help improve this and make it a real tool for those looking for good apps:
1) Use the highest rated comment as the comment on the front page. Hopefully this is the most helpful and descriptive comment so it will be more useful to those that do not read the other comments.
2) Specify whether or not the app is free.
3) Attach a category to each app and allow sorting by category. - BurgerPunch, on 07/16/2008, -5/+4***** LAME IDEA
your only doing it because the AppStore is the flavour of the month, this site will be dead and rotting in about 8 weeks if not sooner.
There are already loads of Digg for apps sites, and what a boring thing to spend your time doing - pedepy, on 07/16/2008, -1/+3Neat - still can't stand that dude....
- heathuff23, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Is there a site that has reviews and screenshots of jailbroken iphone/ipod touch apps and screenshots? I hate having to install a game or theme just to find out it sucks; theres the "more info" tap link which most of the time is useless :(
- fluffyturtle, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2Software with user ratings? Clearly this breakthrough rating scheme is all thanks to Digg!
Not. - freesf, on 07/16/2008, -1/+2Even a blind person can read the site
- DreKor, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2So, I went to the site. I thought my FireFox had screwed up the css. I reloaded, and the site stayed ugly. I switched to IE7, and that fixed it a little bit, and by fixed I mean that the ranking numbers actually rendered. Overall, the presentation sucks. The content might be ok, but I didn't feel like sticking around long enough to find out.
- juliaperesypko, on 07/16/2008, -3/+1Cool game super monkey ball... the best game ever on the iPhone period.
- TwistedSilver, on 07/16/2008, -3/+2Damn why is everybody being a bunch of assholes.
This was done for fun. Chris never expected it to become so "popular" so fast.- bouche, on 07/16/2008, -3/+1how do you know this claim?
- TwistedSilver, on 07/16/2008, -3/+2I was in the live chatroom @ the time that this was created.
- TwistedSilver, on 07/16/2008, -3/+2I was in the live chatroom @ the time that this was created.
- MavRevMatt, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3You waste your time watching him sit there?
- bouche, on 07/16/2008, -3/+1how do you know this claim?
- ncbutters, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1This site was created using http://slinkset.com not reddit's code base.
- BrendanSheehan, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1LOL, I laughed when the guy above said that and then got 12 diggs for his inaccurate claim.
- MavRevMatt, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Which is based on Reddit's code base...
- nutmac, on 07/16/2008, -1/+0There are too many duplicates. Lack of categorizations and search make it more of a curiosity than a useful tool.
- l33z3r, on 07/17/2008, -1/+0Good idea chris
- Technopundit, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Pirillo blows it again.
- drewolanoff, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1from the downloadsquad article: http://www.downloadsquad.com/2008/07/15/iphone-app ...
