- iMags, on 07/20/2008, -0/+8Using a 3G iPhone; whenever I used the Expert mode, to remove the pineapple-logo and steve-recovery, I could not get any signal from my carrier after restoring. But I got plenty of signals using the simple mode (but then with the ugly pineapple-logo)..
If someone else has trouble with their 3G iPhone after using the expert mode (and if the ugly pineapple-boot-logo is the only reason you are using the expert mode) download this modified version (changed the pineapple-logo and steve-recovery with the originals from apple) and use the simple mode instead to get the apple logo.
http://www.filedropper.com/pwnagetool - smpx, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3Comment jacking to post a warning:
If you are jailbreaking for the old installer apps, don't bother. 2.0 firmware is different enough that it rendered all of the old apps incompatible. Installer does not work on this version. Cydia exists, but pratically all packages are command-line based for developers, i.e. there's no apps available for end users. You'll have to wait until they release an update for pwnagetool or for programmers to re-write the apps to work with 2.0.
Unlocking is fine, jailbreaking is rather pointless.
- AhrenBa, on 07/19/2008, -4/+124Just a note for users out there. This release is only for Mac....windows users will still have to wait.

- MattFromSeattle, on 07/20/2008, -1/+3Don't use Apollo, that app is crap. Get Agile Messenger, if it's been ported to 2.0, of course.
- smpx, on 07/20/2008, -0/+6Just a quick note to everyone, Installer.app IS NOT included in the pwnage tool. Futhermore, there are pratically NO applications that you can download or use right now from the jailbreak. ALL previous apps from Installer are no longer compatible with the 2.0 software. I.e. YOU CANNOT DOWNLOAD OR USE THE OLD APPS.
Cydia works, but it announces that pretty much all the software packages are command-line only and mostly for developers. Few of which are designed for end users.
A bit disappointing, but understandable. If you don't need to unlock your iPhone, I recommend waiting until new apps are developed.- max1018, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3Installer.app is not included because as you said everything in it was designed for 1.1.4 and below. I am sure once Jailbreak Developers get more and more apps going for 2.0 they will bring it back.

- mediaphile, on 07/20/2008, -2/+2True hack? Wtf is that? All I know is I've got Cydia running and I can install apps like OpenSSH with it. As soon as Installer is compatible and developers recompile their old apps to be compatible with 2.0, those will run fine too. ZiPhone will have the same functionality, so what does it matter?
- godofpumpkins, on 07/20/2008, -3/+8it's *****, he's trying to save face and failing miserably :)
- JBravada, on 07/20/2008, -1/+6I think Zibri couldn't keep up with the dev team in unlocking 2.0 firmware so he moved on.
- championchap, on 07/20/2008, -2/+4Well what i understood from it was that he hacked the iPhone OS where as others wrote a custom firmware instead?
Honeslty I don't know though, that's just the impression i got from his blog.- max1018, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2Dev Team hacked the Firmware and then you use that to restore your iPhone. I think Zibiri is just trying to make up stuff because he hasn't got any code to nick this time, so he is basically stuffed.
- Quickdood, on 07/20/2008, -2/+47Just to warn you all, the installer app is not functional yet. Only cydia.
- yifanlu94, on 07/20/2008, -0/+8Not going to upgrade yet, but does the apps in Cydia work? The structure for iphone change alot in 2.0 and I don't think 1.1.4 apps will run on there.
- Quickdood, on 07/20/2008, -0/+17Yeah Cydia is set up to only show 2.0 compatible programs.
- Evilena, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2With Cydia can I install programs that I write with the iPhone SDK or is it limited to Cydia's sources?

that'll piss some people off now. - smpx, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1The apps in Cydia are MOSTLY for developers, i.e. command-line apps.
There are pretty much no apps that you can "see" as an icon, for example. If you're jailbreaking for the apps, don't bother.

You need the 2.0 Firmware here - http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.in ...
You need the 3.9 and 4.6 bootloader files here - http://www.spaziocellulare.com/ispazio/2008/07/20/ ... and http://www.spaziocellulare.com/ispazio/2008/07/20/ ...
Boot up PwnageTool 2.0 and it should find your 2.0 Firmware in Simple Mode.
Click next and it will try and find the bootloader files. Mine failed, yours might too, so click No when it asks you to search the web for it, and browse to find it instead.
It will compile the new .ipsw for you, restore the phone in Itunes and you're good to go!- Farik, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4I may be alone here but I did encounter what seemed to be a bug with my 2G Pwnage experience.
When it finishes building the IPSW it instantly failed when trying to get into DFU mode. To get it working I put it into DFU mode prior to Pwning -- once it hit the DFU portion in Pwnage it told me to turn off the phone (you can't "turn" it off in DFU) so I did a hard reset THEN turned it off. At this point Pwnage was back on track: it gave the steps to get into DFU, iTunes popped up stating it was in recovery and I was able to restore to the new IPSW.- AndrewWiggin, on 07/20/2008, -0/+9If you get Error 1600 from iTunes (or if you see in your log a failure to prepare x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw), try: mkdir “~/Library/iTunes/Device Support” ; if that directory already exists, remove any files in it. Then re-run PwnageTool.
Worked for me. - mediaphile, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3Running it in expert mode seems to negate this error, as well as allowing you to prevent PwnageTool from replacing the Apple startup logo with the crappy Pineapple logo.
- SPECOPS, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3This really is simple - just do not plug the phone into the USB until you get to this point, then it will ask you to plug it in, and then instruct you on how to put it in DFU mode (if you don't already know how) - once you have the compiled ipsw file, you don't even need the pwnage tool anymore - it's just showing you how to put it in DFU mode to accept the altered ipsw restore file (in normal restore mode, the hone won't accept this modded file, you have to have it in DFU mode in order for itunes to successfully restore it using the modded ipsw file.
- AndrewWiggin, on 07/20/2008, -0/+9If you get Error 1600 from iTunes (or if you see in your log a failure to prepare x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw), try: mkdir “~/Library/iTunes/Device Support” ; if that directory already exists, remove any files in it. Then re-run PwnageTool.

- innovaciones, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4Or you could use Cydia right now
- doleboy, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1manually installing programs via SSH is possible. however, app store applications are installed in another directory by default (part of the activation/authentication function). so even if you have a copy of an app store program, putting it in our usual applications directory will cause it to crash since the code references files that should be in the "app store" default location.
i tried manually installing super monkey ball in this fashion and it didn't work :(
dropping the app in the "app store location" also didn't work for me

- SIRBERUS, on 07/20/2008, -2/+9Can anyone explain the risks to me? Like... if I jailbreak my 3g, do I need to turn off automatic updates somewhere so apple doesn't brick it? And if it does get "bricked"... can it be unbricked?
- Farik, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2It won't get bricked and if it ever did you can always restore.
- ohhoe, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Really? That's funny. Because I have the 3g iPhone and I jailbroke with pwnage and now mine's bricked and I CAN'T restore.
- AndrewWiggin, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4When an update comes out, iTunes will alert you when you connect your iPhone to it that a new version is available. You can download only, download and install, or do nothing. Just be sure not to install the new version (you can download it of course if you want).
Very likely the consequences of installing a new version by accident will be fairly easily reversible, worst case scenario: all that would happen is that you would not be able to activate, jailbreak, and unlock until they jailbreak and unlock that new version, which usually doesn't take long.- SIRBERUS, on 07/20/2008, -5/+2Worse case scenario more seems like it would brick my phone and I would be unable to call people/get calls lol.
=P - AndrewWiggin, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3I'm trying to reverse the FUD. Phones don't get "bricked" by updating by mistake, though you could temporarily lose the functionality of your phone (i.e. calling in and out like you said). But it's reversible.
The definition of bricking is becoming permanently unusable which won't happen.
- SIRBERUS, on 07/20/2008, -5/+2Worse case scenario more seems like it would brick my phone and I would be unable to call people/get calls lol.

- Mysteriouskk, on 07/20/2008, -2/+6What can I do with jailbreaking the iphone? Is the Installer app available or is there a better AIM app that will at least let me stay logged in longer than 5 minutes after closing the app?
- GeckoSlayer, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2jailbreaking will allow background processes, but there is barely any upgraded applications yet.
my advice: wait a few weeks for everyone to upgrade all of the 1.x framework applications to 2.x and then jailbreak.

- jeebodon, on 07/20/2008, -6/+0And now I kick myself for not trying to rig an OS X install on my Vista box =/
- DarkNemesis618, on 07/20/2008, -1/+4The Installer.app lack is the only thing that disappointed me, but that will hopefully be rectified at a later date...and hopefully soon.
- SIRBERUS, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2I'm sort of new to iPhones... so are you (and others on this thread) trying to imply that there are essentially two parts to jailbreaking... 1 being the actual jailbreak, and two is another "installer.app" which you need to actually load stuff?
- ialan2, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1In jailbreaking you hack the iPhone to allow you to run custom applications. Jailbreaking puts installer.app (or Cydia) on your iPhone which you can use to download other apps.
- BurgerPunch, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2There is cydia though, its much better

- neoneddy, on 07/20/2008, -1/+10Am I the only one who's phone is not activating?
EDIT - I had to do advanced mode, and make sure activate was checked.. looking good!- innovaciones, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3When the program ask if you have a legal iPhone you need to answer NO.
- Blabster, on 07/20/2008, -6/+8No love for windows users :*(

- aphilldo, on 07/20/2008, -2/+0AWESOME!
- panjeti, on 07/20/2008, -1/+8FYI: Jailbroken does not equal Unlocked. They are still working to Unlock the 3G phone
- PosedMagnet, on 07/20/2008, -1/+19What exactly does jailbreaking a phone allow you to do?
I asked this before and all I got was dugg down.
For the "have yet to get an iPhone" crowd.- dementedpuppy, on 07/20/2008, -0/+15Jailbreaking allows you to run unsigned code on the iPhone, and gives you complete read/write access. That (as long as the apps are safe) allows for better apps because they do not fall under the constraints of Apple (they won't let you run apps in the back ground). Like on my old jailbroken phone, I had a last.fm app that was better than the one just released. I had scrobbling and everything else. In the new one you can't scrobble because that would mean the app would have to run in the background.
- skyshock1, on 07/20/2008, -2/+3Also lets you run on GSM carriers OTHER than AT&T right?
- AndrewWiggin, on 07/20/2008, -0/+7Good question, but no. That is unlocking.
Jailbreaking = opening the phone's software up to allow third party applications.
Unlocking = patching the baseband (or something similar) so that you can make use it with any carrier. - AgentPeay, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2"unsigned" sounds so risky.. let's call it "differently signed" - after all, it IS signed, just not by APPL
- ultrafez, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1No, it doesn't have to be signed, there is no requirement for the app to have an attached digital signature.

- dmentd, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2can I use this on my 2g iPhone with 1.1.4 firmware on it?
- innovaciones, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4YES, if you meant to upgrade from 1.1.4 to 2.0
- TheWilder, on 07/20/2008, -8/+3Am I the only one that thought of Pure Pwnage when reading the headline?
- PurpleSfinx, on 07/20/2008, -1/+1No.
- iAMac, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2Has anyone else used this method and find that Apps from the AppStore crash?
- SPECOPS, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4you mean crash more than they already do? No, not so far. Same amount of crashes on my 3G iphone as my 2.5G iphone (jailbroken 2.0 firmware)
- amenic, on 07/20/2008, -2/+10Man by the looks of those comments there are A LOT of deep thinkers and intellectuals using the iphones to be sure.
- ORBAT, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2Hurr, durr.
But my phone sure is pretty, though. Hurr.

- ThankTheCheese, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2what is compatibility like with the unofficial 3rd part apps and 2.0 software? that is, if I upgrade to 2.0 and jailbreak, will my apps like TouchPad, emulators, MobileChat etc. still work?
- ORBAT, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2Not until they get ported to 2.0
- packman86, on 07/20/2008, -1/+6got my 2.0 on right now, and its 5.30 AM!
