The Ultimate iPhone App: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
techcrunch.com — You want an iPhone app? We ’ll give you an iPhone app. Take a look at Star Wars: The Force Unleashed for the iPhone which uses the accelerometer for game play. It should be available in September but we have some cool video over at CrunchGear.

- digg it
- Finchypoo, on 07/16/2008, -10/+102honestly it just looks like a point and click adventure game, and a boring one at that. Its cool that you can play games on the iphone now, but I dont think this is one that should have been ported.
- NRay7882, on 07/17/2008, -0/+8I thought of Dragon's Lair when I first saw it. Nice graphics, but unless they revamp how it plays I don't see it holding my interest for too too long.
- mnky9800n, on 07/17/2008, -1/+2Remember the old Rebel Assault games? That is what this reminds me of except you are a jedi now. They were fun in 1993, not so much now.
- megamod, on 07/17/2008, -4/+2it's not a point and click. you don't point and click to where you wanna go you have to react to enemy dangers in real time. It remind me more of Otaku
- hormel, on 07/17/2008, -0/+8you're right. its a swirl and swipe, which is much more enthralling
- megamod, on 07/17/2008, -1/+4I meant to say Okami. Okami was a very fun game. Look at some of the Wii games isn't that what you're doing for the most part? "Swirling" your wiimote?
Wario Warez and Rayman Raving Rabbids all use this basic gameplay and they are still a lot of fun. - the14thjoey, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Don't you just hit a few buttons in pretty much every video game?
- Elranzer, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Wario Warez! There's a fun name for pirating Wii games.
- kinologik, on 07/17/2008, -4/+2Lucas Arts should embrace ScummVM!!! AppStore instead of jailbreak = profit!!! Zak mcKraken FTW!
- whymog, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1I agree with you, but I dugg you down for that ridiculous memespeak.
Man, I would pay so much money for a touched-up (no pun intended) Full Throttle or Day of the Tentacle on my iPhone. - TomFrost, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1@whymog: You don't have to pay any money! ScummVM has been out and working for months on the iPhone platform. I've played through the Monkey Islands and a few others on it already -- it has its pros and cons, though. For instance, it's nice to flop down in bed and curl up with a handheld device for one of those great games, but it's still hard to click on small objects because there's no zooming yet.
Nonetheless, it's a fantastic platform, and anyone with a jailbroken iPhone can use it. - kinologik, on 07/29/2008, -0/+1You're right whymog... but just thinking about those titles from my youth makes me feel like the nerdish half-assed teen I was.
- whymog, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1I agree with you, but I dugg you down for that ridiculous memespeak.
- schneb, on 07/17/2008, -1/+1That's what I thought as well. Alot of blah blah, but no action and no use for the iPhone's capabilities.
- whymog, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1It's sure pretty, but that's about the only nice thing I can say about it. Doesn't look fun in the slightest.
- InYourHonor, on 07/17/2008, -0/+0I think Diablo 2 should be put on the Iphones with access to battle net :p
- akhomerun, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1i like point and click adventures
- Myonosken, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Star Wars' Indiana Jones game? Thats not a bad thing...
- TheDeepFriar, on 07/16/2008, -6/+75ugh....Lets get the console version perfected before working on mobile stuff--Ok LucasArts?
- EvilBaby, on 07/17/2008, -0/+16There are multiple developers for this game, so the console versions will not be affected
LucasArts (PS3, X360)
Krome Studios (PS2, PSP, Wii)
n-Space (DS)
Universomo (N-Gage)
I'm not sure which developer would be working ont his version but the PS3/360 version won't be hindered by this development.- Jawsh91, on 07/17/2008, -0/+17They still develop games for N-Gage?
O.o - Kingoftherings, on 07/17/2008, -1/+4A better question would be: They're making it for N-Gage and iPhone but not PC?
Guess who's never buying another Lucas Arts game ever again. - bbear, on 07/18/2008, -1/+3PC gamers don't buy games. They download them off thepiratebay. Hence why publishers and retailers are abandoning PC gaming.
- counterplex, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2@bbear: So do console gamers. Why do you think the console modding business is so big?
- Jawsh91, on 07/17/2008, -0/+17They still develop games for N-Gage?
- counterplex, on 07/17/2008, -1/+9How about you get a PC version out mmkay LucasArts?
- IanPR, on 07/17/2008, -0/+4Or... more importantly.. finish off the last damned Monkey Island game.
Only if Ron Gilbert writes it though.
- IanPR, on 07/17/2008, -0/+4Or... more importantly.. finish off the last damned Monkey Island game.
- Calamier, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2I think you don't grasp some fundamental concepts of business :)
You roll out the products that will make the most money, between a new app for iPhone and a "perfect" version for console, the iphone app makes more money, therefore, has a higher priority.
- EvilBaby, on 07/17/2008, -0/+16There are multiple developers for this game, so the console versions will not be affected
- l800LEMMINGS, on 07/16/2008, -4/+10i really hope developers start putting their all into manipulating the hardware to its full potential and try to put out a kick ass game i've seen cute games but nothing that graphically blows me away... its supposed to be more powerful then psp or ds and i hope that we see more promising game apps in the near future
- bbqsalad, on 07/17/2008, -3/+3Unless they come out with some controller attachment or something, you wont see anything kick ass.
- RedGreen1, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2Come on! Loco Roco on the iPhone would be the definition of kick ass.
- kris33, on 07/17/2008, -1/+1What do you think about this then?
http://www.vimeo.com/1264514 - l800LEMMINGS, on 07/17/2008, -1/+1they can make a controller minus the tactile feedback and still make it not invasive to gameplay plus iphone/ipod touch has so much potential for a kick ass RTS
- Kingoftherings, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3I still don't understand how you play games at all on the thing. The screen isn't big enough to put "touch" buttons on it and still see what you're doing. So it's basically a DS with only one screen, and no buttons. What kind of games can you play then? Drawing?
- bbqsalad, on 07/17/2008, -3/+3Unless they come out with some controller attachment or something, you wont see anything kick ass.
- dalesmatrix, on 07/17/2008, -8/+17Looks pretty cool to me, I love the gesture based system for deflecting lasers and using the force to throw troopers around. Graphics look fantastic.
- dagaz, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1When I first read the headline I thought 'Way cool!', but to me all the cutscenes and wanky force throwing looks pretty boring. What was the lightsaber in his hand for? I didn't see him use it once, apart from deflecting lasers. How about a real Jedi fight at the end instead of just throwing boxes at each other.
- fraul, on 07/17/2008, -6/+30Looks awsome .. my only question is how battery is going to perform when rendering this 3D games ? It's not that fun if you have to play by an outlet.
- neferiousrich, on 07/17/2008, -0/+7Sega Game Gear anyone?
- CaptainNoPants, on 07/17/2008, -0/+4I lost tons of money on batteries for that thing.
- digitallysick, on 07/17/2008, -1/+2I remember going on field trips playing the game gear, we would carry a bag of batteries. It would just eat them up, but i swear it was before its time, color screen, and it was fun to play.
- neferiousrich, on 07/17/2008, -0/+7Sega Game Gear anyone?
- redheadguy719, on 07/17/2008, -0/+34i'm gonna have to agree that as cool as this sounds, the lack of any movement control seems kind of boring...
- Aitese, on 07/17/2008, -1/+5I think as time goes by the lack of any tactile buttons on the iPhone is going to show how limited it is as a gaming device...there are just so many genres of gaming where touching the screen will work well. A virtual control pad on the screen would negate that large display and having my finger in the way of the action all the time would start to get frustrating (and would explain my the DS has a dual screen in the frist place) it seems puzzle games and games using the accelerometer for movement will be it. I'm sure someone might come up with a solution...but this isn't it.
- Aitese, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3That was supposed to read "will NOT work well..." but hopefully people get the gist.
- jpaolini, on 07/17/2008, -3/+15Very cool indeed - but Digg will soon need it's own section for iPhone apps at this rate. We need a site that follows iPhone/App Store stuff so every app doesn't need its own front page story on Digg.
- earnjam, on 07/17/2008, -0/+5They'll slow down. Give it a couple of weeks and people will get over that new gadget smell.
- Gutterpunk, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2I remember when the same was said about the iPhone a year ago.

- ngmcs8203, on 07/17/2008, -3/+7Ehhh... I already downloaded that sweet lightsaber from the Apps Store. I'll just play the console version of this game as I swing my iLightsaber.
- matriculated, on 07/17/2008, -1/+12It really looks good but it's just a gesture based minigame wrapped up in very nice graphics. I guess if you don't have a DS this'll will be cool.
- lsumed, on 07/17/2008, -3/+5I have a qyestion for iPhone owners. Is 16GB enough space for all of these apps, plus music, pics, etc.? I haven't bought one yet.
- andydude117, on 07/17/2008, -1/+9Apps don't take up much space at all, and it depends on how much music/pictures you have. I found that the 8GB is perfect for me.
- SlpingInsomniac, on 07/17/2008, -2/+1Are you kidding? I went from a 30 GB iPod to an 8 GB iPod Touch, and it's rather frustrating.
- TannerC, on 07/17/2008, -0/+4It's plenty of space.
- jayjay80, on 07/17/2008, -3/+816GB should be enough for everybody
- rayraym0fucka, on 07/17/2008, -0/+7640k :p
- fanclerks, on 07/17/2008, -0/+9You can say that for yourself... but there are always people who could use more space. I had to create a playlist specifically for the iPhone to sync to so I could slim down the amount of stuff that got synced up. Otherwise my entire iPhone would be nothing but music.
- repmekevets, on 07/17/2008, -1/+1pardon? i have 92gb of music.. it would be nice if it could all fit on an iphone.
- rednaxela825, on 07/17/2008, -9/+1Theres also a 32GB version.
- stubear, on 07/17/2008, -1/+1Only the iPod Touch has a 32GB version available. Why Apple doesn't allow SIM cards or other ways to add memory, even if it's just for photos, music, or other user based files that might change on a whim, saving the main memory for apps, etc., is beyond me.
- bbqsalad, on 07/17/2008, -2/+1stubear: its called thinking different, outside the box, it just works.
- totorototoro, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2So far, yes. But the Apps Store has only started, so who knows what huge programs lurk out there :p
I moved up from an 8G iPhone, and its pretty nice having the extra storage. - lsumed, on 07/17/2008, -1/+3Cool. Thanks for the responses.
- whyufail, on 07/17/2008, -8/+2"I haven't bought one yet."
Don't - digitallysick, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1I still have a 4gb (original iphone from launch day) i don't keep a lot of music on it, since i already have an ipod. So far i have plenty of space. If you have the money to spend , might as well go 8 gb though
- Starlach, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2No it's not enough. You need more. Always!!
- andydude117, on 07/17/2008, -1/+9Apps don't take up much space at all, and it depends on how much music/pictures you have. I found that the 8GB is perfect for me.
- spritom, on 07/17/2008, -2/+5It looks cool on the geeky scale, but it doesn't look all that entertaining of a game. Maybe they'll be able to cash in on the Apple customer=Star Wars Geek thing...
- whyufail, on 07/17/2008, -2/+2Apple customers are attracted to shiny expensive things. They just need to make sure to add lots of particle effects, gloss, and slap a $300 price tag on it and call it "premium"
- r2builder, on 07/17/2008, -4/+14The guy holding the camera sounds like a total dick. There I said it.
- whyufail, on 07/17/2008, -3/+4Side effect of holding an iPhone
- aladrin, on 07/17/2008, -1/+28It doesn't use the accelerometer for gameplay. It only uses it to rotate the screen. -yawn-
- nothin2g, on 07/17/2008, -5/+7The video loads like brick *****.

- DeFex, on 07/17/2008, -2/+6not ultimate anything its just a game, and it looks kind of crap as well.
- bluerei, on 07/17/2008, -9/+8HEY LUCAS ARTS-
How about making a PC version which will make you a lot more money before you make one for a FREAKIN' CELLPHONE. You going to port a version for my toaster too? PORT IT TO PC. - theutopian, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1I really wish developers wouldn't focus on using the accelerometer so much. It's just a gimmick that cool and all but really, who wants to sit on the train or bus turing their phone in a million directions? Just put some touch controls on the screen please.
- Anevilweasel, on 07/17/2008, -1/+2Actually, Aurora Feint: The Beginning is an excellent game that uses the accelrometer in a useful and fun way without it just being gimmicky. Think outside the box...
- ftx437, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Looks ok..but it reminds me of that old dragons lair in the gameplay it will probably kill the battery life..
- totorototoro, on 07/17/2008, -0/+5For some reason, Darth Vader looks more like Dark Helmet in that vid-whats up wif the giant head?
- revjustin2, on 07/17/2008, -1/+9This back-story on this one is pretty interesting. Empire fashion was rapidly changing as old Republic style was being replaced by the sleeker, more generally evil Empire flair. There was, however, a slightly awkward period where larger helmets were becoming in vogue amongst the more elite wielders of the Dark Side of the Force. The higher up the food chain you were, the more you could afford larger and larger helmets. Boba Fett, for example, was seen at many cantinas with your standard "fishbowl" sized helmet. Darth Vader, on the other hand, got to a point where he had to enslave three Ewoks to help him walk around. Thankfully, the trend ended and most helmet-wearing people of the empire went back to the more practical styles of yore.

- fatb0b, on 07/17/2008, -0/+7This game would be a lot cooler if it was space dog fighting with a cockpit view and steering by moving the iPhone. Wing Commander FTW!
- RadicalEdward, on 07/17/2008, -1/+8I think they should port the old pod racer game. That would do great on the iphone.
- Rudegar, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1then rather wipeout
- etx313, on 07/17/2008, -1/+5"The accelerometer is only used to switch gameplay from landscape to portrait at any time."
Ugh, ok. Useless. Also, this game looks awful. More generic iphone crap... - Chairboy, on 07/17/2008, -0/+19The bar for 'Ultimate' has rarely been set so low.
- P373Y, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1cough vista cough

"Yah, you know starwars?
...
walks away- bbqsalad, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Those chicks suck tho so who cares? Cool girls would be like "***** yeah I know starwars, wanna screw? let me buy you a beer and we can go back to my place and make sex and then sleep and in the morning I will cook you breakfast and we can screw again and watch starwars"
- janu5, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1daydreaming much?
Though that would be awesome.
It took me 3 yrs to get my fiance to watch even the actually good starwarses. And then she did not offer me a beer. Or sex for that matter.

*sigh* - NeutrixX, on 07/17/2008, -4/+4That looks pretty sweet to me.
Beautiful graphics and good gameplay.
Yet another reason to buy an iPhone for me. - airj1012, on 07/17/2008, -1/+2This also looks very lame.
- cparsons, on 07/17/2008, -1/+3They need to come up with a bluetooth controller which cradles the iphone in landscape and make some decent games. I don't ever see myself using the touch pad real time gaming.
- amenic, on 07/17/2008, -1/+2Glad to see some guys came up with looks to me as an original style of interface for gameplay on a touch screen device. I wonder if they will apply it to puzzle solving and more complex moves and such as the game progresses. Looks interesting. A little action / adventure on your phone. Yes please. Even if they don't have the depth in this title I'm sure others will build upon it. And I mean come on - how much should we really demand from a PHONE. =)
- adammharvey, on 07/17/2008, -1/+2im a mac fan but i am also a gamer, and that just looks like ass for game play. i mean common iphone your not a hand held nor a console so don't try to be.
- Kenzan, on 07/17/2008, -1/+16That's no phone....It's a Game-station!
- jktress, on 07/17/2008, -1/+2I've said it before, and I'll say it again. If you're going to make point and click adventure games for the iPhone...MAKE MONKEY ISLAND! Leave games like this to the consoles...
- davepascoe, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2the iPhone will probably be like the Wii: 99% of developers look at the user base, see dollar signs and shovel lots of gimmicky crap. 1% will produce genuinely good games that use the tech properly.
- Paigelil, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1That's why I have a treo :D Scummvm + Palm + Monkey Island = me not doing work
- Shatfacedpanda, on 07/17/2008, -0/+4Looks cheesy, same movements over and over.
- CountBrass, on 07/17/2008, -3/+1I think it looks like a fake.
Lots of suspiciously static shots. Genuinely awful control scheme and awful animation.
Sorry but that's just *not* Lucasarts. - surferjoemaui, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2@ cparsons ,How about something that looks like a ps2 controller but with an iphone dock in the center and big battery built into the base?
- unAntimatter, on 07/17/2008, -0/+0Ya sure, how about you just buy a PSP? all you fan boys like to tout that only poor people don't like the iPhone(because they can't afford it), what's a few more of daddy's dollars?
Lugging around a psp would be no different than lugging around a PS controller.- surferjoemaui, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1maybe I have one? but it seems to be missing a phone, a camera, GPS, email, a web browser, a accelerometer, an ipod...
