- mikeal321, on 09/08/2008, -5/+26that'd actually be an awesome device, cause apple tv at the moment is kinda meh...
- CDRaff, on 09/08/2008, -2/+5I am a huge fan of my AppleTV. I don't think that I need a BlueRay or a DVR/Tuner. All I really need is more codec support.
- cramd, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1then the patchstick is just what you need. I hacked my just last week, and I am now able to use it just as I thought I was going to be able to when I purchased it. I can now have a 1TB USB drive hooked up, play almost any media type, while still able to use all of the "stock" features such as rent/purchase from iTunes.
- mrsteveman1, on 09/08/2008, -1/+1For what? The direction of things is to stream from stuff like hulu or amazon, or play optical discs (which is going away but still relevant, i have 200+ dvds i can't play on ATV without playing stupid games with handbrake), download from stuff like iTunes (already supported by ATV), or watch standard, digital/analog cable or satellite.
More codecs won't help any of those. An optical drive, or a tuner would help much more.. They are trying to sell $200+ boxes in the present while living in some future where cable and satellite, and DVDs, are no longer relevant, and they certainly are for the majority of the population.
Plus, the only real paid content you can stick on an ATV are ripped dvds, itunes movies and rentals, and purchased TV shows. I'm not ***** buying TV shows, and after watching my iTunes rentals expire before i finished watching them, i won't be getting any more of those any time soon either. So the ATV is very limited to me. I do however watch my Tivo a number of hours per day, but Apple in it's infinite wisdom thinks DVRs are on the way out, and they are wrong and will continue to be wrong for another 5-6 years.

- jakem1, on 09/08/2008, -5/+2What's an Apple TV?
- mrBitch, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1Well let me tell you little jake, it's a TV see? And it's made of apples, see?
Now you know.
I'll be here until Thursday, oh and try the chowder, it's great!
- mrBitch, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1Well let me tell you little jake, it's a TV see? And it's made of apples, see?
- Urkel, on 09/08/2008, -1/+6AppleTV, in it's current form, is a waste of technology. Under the hood this is a powerful little device. It has so much potential but unfortunately it is limited to what Apple wants it to do rather than what it is capable of doing.
- MacParrot, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1I haven't bought an AppleTV as to me it seems more like a solution looking for a problem. What the AppleTV needs IMO is the following:
1. HDMI inputs. Use Front Row to switch between 3-5 HDMI inputs added to the AppleTV. Most HDTVs have between 1-3 and it can be a little crowded trying to fit all your devices. Multiple inputs (along with perhaps some component/composite inputs) would allow you to have everything connected to one source. Less mess and more tidy.
2. Full-size hard drive in the 500GB range and up. Use the AppleTV to store all your content (with an option to back it up via TimeMachine?). This nonsense about syncing back to an iTunes account (and iTunes has to be running is crazy. Stop throwing up roadblocks Apple.
3. DVD/BluRay? I'm mixed on this. I think disks are going away with all digital downloads to take over, but if there was room and it didn't price the AppleTV to almost iMac prices....maybe.
4. DVR for TV content. I think this ight be a problem with content providers though most cable systems now offer one. It would depend on what content could be stored and how long it would last.- mrsteveman1, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1You are right. And an optical drive adds very little cost and takes up very little space. Doesn't have to be blu-ray, no one has libraries of those things. I do however, have 200+ dvds i can't watch on the ATV, which severely limits it and makes me not want to add yet another box to my cabinet just to function as an extender for iTunes.
- CDRaff, on 09/08/2008, -2/+5I am a huge fan of my AppleTV. I don't think that I need a BlueRay or a DVR/Tuner. All I really need is more codec support.
- Bosox958, on 09/08/2008, -0/+35The 2.0 firmware is definitely an improvement for the Apple TV (rentals are a nice addition), but the addition of something like a DVR and more codec support could make it a must have
- RudeTurnip, on 09/08/2008, -0/+12DVR functionality is dead in the water at this point unless it will support CableCard, anything less would be half-assed and Apple isn't about to do that. Blu-ray player functionality would be nice and convenient, but Apple seems dead-set against physical media and OTA content, preferring downloads.
- vexadril, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2A blu-ray player would easily add $200 to the cost of the device. That's I think the biggest reason we'll never see it in the AppleTV.

- BrettFromTibet, on 09/08/2008, -20/+5As long as it's locked-in to iTunes, AppleTV is gonna suck....
- RudeTurnip, on 09/08/2008, -6/+8You can buy an AppleTV, never spend another dime on it and use it to its full potential. - TheBigKlosowski, on 09/08/2008, -0/+6I'd really like to see a subscription TV / Movie service with this. I don't have cable, and Satellite is a pain in my building. I just want to watch a few shows, but the price Apple charges per show is outrageous! I'm seriously considering ditching my AppleTV in favor of the XBOX with the Netflix stream.
- vexadril, on 09/08/2008, -2/+2I'm sorry to hear that your TV only has one video input. That must be a pain in the ass to have to choose one and only one device to connect to your TV.
- TheBigKlosowski, on 09/08/2008, -0/+0It's just an issue of clutter. Why do I need multiple boxes that do the same thing? If an XBOX or PS3 can stream movies from the PC, plus music, and has an unlimited subscription to Netflix, what do I need the AppleTV for? It's just taking up space at that point.
- mrBitch, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1RE: " Satellite is a pain in my building. "

- RudeTurnip, on 09/08/2008, -3/+1No-one cares about marginal codecs. h.264 is an open standard and the way video is going. It doesn't have gigE, but honestly, I'm streaming hi-def content at home using 802.11g and the device supports up to 802.11n iirc.
- jakem1, on 09/08/2008, -1/+3How is MKV a marginal codec? There's a hell of a lot more MKV stuff out there than there is h.264.
- jannefoo, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2MKV != codec FYI
- Dalhectar, on 09/08/2008, -1/+3A streaming device doesn't need Gige. Popcorn hour and XBMC get along fine without it.
But a streaming video device that needs to be hacked just for divx support is not a streaming video device, but a ball & chain. When the next generation of video comes out, you'll never have official support for it. Hell, it can't support today's or yesterday's formats.

- mrBitch, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1@jakem1 RE: " Just get a Media Center PC. Why settle for some crippled, proprietary Apple solution. "
Proprietary Apple solution?
The Media Center PC is hardware OPEN, but software CLOSED and crippled by proprietary Microsoft DRM, WMA, and crappy WMV.
The Mac Mini is hardware CLOSED and proprietary but is software OPEN and has NO DRM built into the OS.
If you're still confused about all of this, think of OS X as a commercial, 3rd party supported "Linux" distro, but it's based on NeXT and BSD Unix. - mrBitch, on 01/02/2009, -0/+1RE: "Proprietary Apple solution?

- profJohn, on 09/08/2008, -0/+3I own an Apple TV, and I like it well enough, but everything I've seen so far tells me that Apple just isn't putting much priority or resources into developing it.
- diggB, on 09/08/2008, -1/+3I hope that if it does have DVR functionality that works with digital cable, that Apple has a solution WITHOUT using the dreaded CableCARDS. If you've every dealt with using CableCARDS (such as with a Tivo HD/Series 3), then you will appreciate what a serious pain they are to install. I mean three Time Warner visits, six hours later, kinda of pain.
- RudeTurnip, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2Unfortunately, CableCard is the only way to go for practical and functional digital service in the US (as un-practical and un-functional as CableCard may be).
- yardie, on 09/08/2008, -1/+0yes, if there is anything Apple should emulate it's the ***** of fail in Vista Media Center.*
All though there is nothing inherently wrong in VMC the constant screwing around they are getting from Cablelabs makes me wonder why they even bother with the DVR in it. - archer75, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1They would have no choice. They would not be allowed to tune all the cable channels you want without a cable card.
- vexadril, on 09/08/2008, -1/+2I used to use a Windows Media Center as my TV, and when the cable guy came out with a CableCARD in hand, he had no idea how to install it! So I ended up just using analog cable until I ditched the media center (and cable television service) completely for an AppleTV+Mac Mini setup.

- tr909, on 09/08/2008, -1/+3You can't say 'no one'. I have one as one of my inputs to my system. It works great as an iTunes server for different zones. And in the rare occasion I rent a movie, it's there with HD rentals (although it needs more content). Sorry but you gotta admit MS is getting this one while Apple just doesn't.- vexadril, on 09/08/2008, -4/+4I disagree that MS is "getting it". - EntropyFan, on 09/08/2008, -0/+3That isn't the fault of MS though. It squarely rests on the shoulders of the cable company, as they can't, make that won't, create a cableCARD that works with any computer.
And it is intentional. They hope if they make so ***** hard to use, people will stick with their DVR and equipment.
I like MediaCenter, and I love GB-PVR, but the song and dance you need to go through to have cable (or satellite) work reliably is stupid. And HD? Even worse.

- vmcolombo, on 09/08/2008, -0/+6I just don't see this happening. Why would Apple add a BluRay player and DVR functionalities when they're selling TV shows and movies through iTunes? It seems more likely that they would simply improve the quality of HD video through iTunes.
- danielrh9, on 09/08/2008, -0/+3I've been tempted by the Apple TV in the past, but I'm just not convinced to pay over two hundred dollars for a device that only allows me to pay Apple MORE money in order to get adequate content for. - tr909, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1Yes there will be a flood of potential customers who lost their over-air analog signals. But I have a feeling that particular demographic is not going to be buying Apple products. I can see them as more of a 'what does Radio Shack have' type of crowd.
- nxusername, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1Paw, what happened to the Sex Box(TM)? It's all fuzzy and hissing at me like a snake.
- timusca, on 09/08/2008, -0/+6Since when does AppleTV not have wifi?!
- nxusername, on 09/08/2008, -0/+4Since bloggers became journalists.
- maxsunset, on 09/08/2008, -0/+3You can also currently (albiet to a limited degree) control a Apple TV with an iphone/touch.
- HOTM, on 09/08/2008, -0/+3An Apple TV is a very nice luxury. But there are so many things I would rather get before this.
- Frozo, on 09/08/2008, -2/+2Give me a break. DVR for Apple TV? What crack is this "analyst" smoking? Why would they cannibalize the sale of there downloadable TV shows? This is a pip dream and if it happens I am retiring this Digg account and re-subscribing with the new name "ImAnAsshole"
- nxusername, on 09/08/2008, -0/+3Shout out to ImAnAsshole - http://digg.com/users/ImAnAsshole
- Frozo, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1HA! Damn, I'll have to find something equally humiliating ;)
- nxusername, on 09/08/2008, -0/+3Shout out to ImAnAsshole - http://digg.com/users/ImAnAsshole
- madgamer7, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1They need to have wiimote-like pointing functionality so you can use safari on it more easily. I'm sure theres a way to get around patents on that one. A revamped Apple TV would be interesting for sure. I'd say they need to merge Apple TV with Mac Mini.. for the ultimate mini computer/media server.
- bretto, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2The more they update it the more of a chance for it to finally catch on. I bet the Apple TV 10.0 will be a huge hit.
- vexadril, on 09/08/2008, -0/+3The AppleTV already has wifi (802.11n). It always has. This fact alone shows that the author hasn't even done rudimentary research into the device's capabilities before griping about the lack of them. He also says it would be cool if you could use the iPhone or iPod Touch as a "smart remote" for the AppleTV. Ummm, dude, it's called "Remote", Apple made it, and it's a free app for the iPhone/iPod Touch on the App Store.
- nycmac247, on 09/08/2008, -1/+3I am a huge fan of appletv and think that its just not meant for the people that complain about it.
This is what I like: Have 250+ @ 2500 kbs movies ripped via handbrake to my iMac. Have gigabit ethernet throughout the house with home runs to apple TVs. Have movies streaming from iMac to to any screen in house with an AppleTV.
That's all I use it for since their rental movies are always after the movie has been out for a while... - jonshipman, on 09/08/2008, -0/+4I have a Popcorn Hour A-110. It has been excellent and greater than any AppleTV ever (because of MKV support!!! :D )
- archer75, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2A great product for sure. I just don't see why apple can't add support for more video formats and containers. Such a little thing to do too.
- archer75, on 09/08/2008, -1/+1I don't need a tuner or DVR. Though if you are going to add a tuner make it worthwhile and add two with QAM support. But what I really want is built in support for more video formats and containers.
- vexadril, on 09/08/2008, -1/+2I have a mac mini hooked up via HDMI to my HDTV. With apple's awesomely tiny bluetooth keyboard and any old bluetooth mouse, it blows the lid off AppleTV, and can do everything the author is crying for, except for blu-ray. Seriously, Leopard + Spaces seems made for the tv screen.
- zigzag801, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1I got the same exact setup also got my audio hooked up to my receiver for 5.1 surround sound, just put an 800gb external HD on it so I can backup my music and movies on that and watch them right off the hd hehe
- metapop, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1here's what i'd love to see the apple TV evolve into.
a complete media center, including amplifier, speaker outs, HDMI inputs and an output for a TV acting as a monitor. it would be the hub of your entire media setup, your TV tuner, a DVR, and there would no longer be a need for multiple remotes. you would plug your wii/ps3/xbox, or any media element into it, and it would be a choice with an icon for it on the startup menu, it would recognize what you plug into it just like your computer does. the remote would be just as simple as the current one, all the audio setup would be done as prompts on the TV screen itself- no more confusing/frustrating audio set-up, and no more remembering what video channel the wii, comcast box, ps2, or DVD player are on... it would all be very simple. no more confusion about how to access a particular device. - hamburgers, on 09/08/2008, -1/+2Why would Apple include a DVR? They want you to buy your TV shows and movies from iTunes.
- thrillho, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2Convert the lame appletv into an awesome network media player: http://awkwardtv.org/
So nice. NFS mount your file server, install the codec pack and file broswer, and voila....i love it- prisoner24601, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2I followed the link. Is there a faq? What is it? The homepage just starts with a list of articles and commentary. Is this an application/project or just a news site about the AppleTV?
Pretend you're me and have never heard of awkwardtv. The page doesn't seem to tell me anything about it.

- artistictech, on 09/08/2008, -0/+4Obligatory link to http://awkwardtv.org for those, like myself, who want to get their hands dirty and make the AppleTV a true media set-top box. I've modified mine to include USB disk support, Perian and WMV codecs, filesystem access to media files, nitoTV for DVD VIDEO_TS playback, and AFP server functionality for moving said media files to the external disk.
