Turn your Mac Mini into an AppleTV
jonandnic.com — I've collected some media, pulled it together with some AppleScripts and compiled some instructions to make your Mini look and feel like an AppleTV. Not a full software solution like some others are working on, but I think it looks pretty slick!

- jonwise80, on 10/12/2007, -14/+17Sorry this looks like blog spam, but I had no other way to publish except for comments in an unrelated story. Hope this helps some people!
- spinchange, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27You blog is so clearly not spam, my friend. This is a neat little hack that's 10 times more productive than downloading a cracked AppleTV Kernel and messing around with that. It's frustrating to me that a lot of ppl's blog sub's are labeled as "blogspam" around here, almost totally out-of-hand. I think that is an over-used and misunderstood term.

- avihappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+43Blog-Spam is when you simply
1. Find a cool link.
2. Put the link on your blog and maybe say a thing or two
3. Put Ads
4. Submit it to Digg
5. ???
6. PROFIT!!
When you make something original (like this), it is NOT Blog Spam.

- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10turn your Xbox into an Apple TV http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=583541
- jerbroc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Best thing I ever did was install XBMC on my xbox. Now i use it every day. Cool skin
- schoate09, on 10/12/2007, -25/+1Turn your $599 piece of crap into the functionallity of a $299 piece of *****.
- postaldave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5blogspam is a one liner with a link to a real site for the so purpose of pimping ones own site.
you however had content(lacking in most of the web these days) therefor you have not "blogspammed." - kd7onc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7My friend Jon and I never thought that this would make to the front page. His poor little dell server in the closet is getting hammered. I posted a mirror to help him out and it includes the file!

- nrfx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I dont get it. how hard is it to launch frontrow?
Now show me how to turn my appletv into a mac mini and then you'd have something... - jonwise80, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Not hard at all, it's just a script.
I haven't got an AppleTV, but from what I've read, it seems to be just a really lightweight Mac. I can't imagine it'll be long before the people on the Internets have it booting a normal version of OS X. I'm personally wondering if anyone's tried hooking a keyboard up and entering the Open Firmware on boot, to get it start-up from a network drive...- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Intel[Open Firmware] == false
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Fine then, how about Ubuntu with LMC on an Apple TV?
- Kale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Cool! Thanks. I just spent last weekend adding all the quicktime hacks so I can watch my backed-up DVDs in FrontRow on the TV. It's so sweet to be able to watch any episode of Futurama without hassling with the DVDs. I may give this a shot when I get home.
- DooM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Ok great - but how about someone finding a way to turn my AppleTV into a Mac Mini so I can get a computer for half-price instead of AppleTV for twice as much..? :)
- btgoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah well.... sure... expect the hard stuff first... sheesh.... can't please some people....
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not to mention your 'half-priced' Mac would include HDMI and component video ports, something not available on the mini at any price.
- hls1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3not a big deal. HDMI is basically DVI + audio. i have my mini hooked up to my tv with a DVI to HDMI cable (no conversion necessary).
- rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1My PPC Mac Mini does not have IR input, so I guess I am out of luck...
My idea at the moment is try to use iTheater + Wiimote, I hope it really works as promised.- rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1PS: Or maybe I could try Remote Buddy + Wiimote?
- drakino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can grab an IR sensor plus some software to use the Apple Remote on a PowerPC mac here: http://twistedmelon.com/
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can also use this great thing called Salling Clicker. I don't want to sound like I'm spamming, but I really do like it, as long as you have bluetooth, and a bluetooth enabled phone, you probably can control it through your phone. One less thing to lose.
- mi2ca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17How to teach a $599 device to act like a $299 device.
- xioner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8There are actually a lot of benefits to using a Mini.
Personally, I use my 20-inch iMac to watch everything (since I grew up with small-screen TVs, 20 inches of high quality goodness is good enough for me). I eventually want to get a Mini and a TV though.
Why a Mini?
Replaces DVD player. Can run emulators for SNES and N64. Can rip my DVDs or download iTunes (and other) content. You can add a wireless keyboard and mouse for computing or gaming (Freespace 2 on a big TV would be awesome).
If you have a Mini, or can afford one, I think that is the best option.
- xioner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8There are actually a lot of benefits to using a Mini.
- adinb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'll be impressed when someone gets backrow running on a mac mini and conversely, when someone gets the OS X GUI running on the AppleTV.
- tsunamisteve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'll be impressed if someone can give me a nice, easy, free download that enables the USB port on my Apple TV. All problems solved.
- thijzer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0The next version of frontrow might as well look like the theme used in apple TV.
- teradome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The next version of Front Row *better* look like Apple TV:
* Actual use of metadata, like movie descriptions and TV "cover art"
* Proper sorting of TV Shows (a long, long standing bug)
* New/Not New highlighting of TV Shows (Front Row only supports Podcasts)
And much more -- Front Row has been the ignored stepchild for too long.

- connorcimowsky, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Does someone have an alternate DL link please?
- connorcimowsky, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1EDIT: Nvmnd, found a mirror
- aquax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I can't get the screen saver to work :(
- senseigmg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Its using front row, so the AppleTV screensaver won't be on there.
- cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1People just need to be careful. Apple TV has a few enhancements aimed at protecting your screen. It flips the album art when viewing a CD. Unless frontrow 1.0 has this (and decent screen saving precautions are taken), I'd be a little leery about burn-in. Just FYI.
- rheaume, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Turn your Mac Mini into an AppleTV... with a marker and some tape
- noctum17, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3ENOUGH with the Apple TV posts! Seems like ever other damn article on digg is about Apple TV.
- galou, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1hey ian you should do this
- websterphreaky, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1You Apple Kool-Aid Drinkers need to get a life. The kind of obsessiveness displayed here on AppleTV (which D-Link, Linksys and others had years ago) and then wasting time as ONE WISE poster noted "making a $599 (Apple) device to act like a $299 device." should be spent finding a date...... with a female, not your Made in China Mac.
- jonwise80, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Um...websterphreaky? Did you even follow the link to my website? I'm married (to a female -- and a pretty beautiful one at that), have an active and busy ministry life and career, and have an adorable baby boy. Seems to me that it's people like you who need a life, and that I'm doing just fine.
- kmccormi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Can I try this on my powerbook? Or is it pointless? Why only for a Mac Mini? Can someone explain please ... thanks in advance.
- jonwise80, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Your PowerBook is technically cable of running FrontRow, but its been disabled by Apple so that they can sell you a MacBook instead. Download the FrontRow Enabler from the Internets, and buy yourself a little KeySpan remote, and you'll be all set to run this on your PowerBook/G4/iMac/eMac...
- abalith, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Well... Seems to be vain for me...
