- solidwhetstone, on 08/25/2008, -26/+6This will bring the iphone into the video game market full force. Look out PSP!
ALSO- in before people start complaining about how it looks. If you read the caption you'll see that this is just a cast of the final product.- ferrariman60, on 08/27/2008, -2/+13You ARE joking, right? I hope so.
- nmnnotmyname, on 08/27/2008, -3/+5There's no way you just typed that and then clicked the submit button.
Nobody could be that dumb.
- alexcroox, on 08/25/2008, -19/+51surely this defeats the point of a touch screen device...
- LennyX, on 08/26/2008, -3/+40I'd say it enhances it. The problem with emulators on the iPhone/iPod Touch has been that the buttons are usually watermarked over the screen and you have no feel of where the buttons are and slip off them too easily. Annoying.
- normalkid, on 08/26/2008, -1/+10yep. for the most part virtual buttons and pads are terrible for gameplay.
- RgyaGramShad, on 08/28/2008, -2/+8and only being able to press two buttons at once really messes you up in some games
- zdiggler, on 08/27/2008, -1/+2LOL.. Steve Job might quit apple again after he see more buttons on his phone.
- nmnnotmyname, on 08/27/2008, -1/+16I'd say it complements the touch screen. Reminds me of the DS, which I'm actually running a tracker on right now... Touchscreen is useful and so are the buttons. (Yeah, I know, A tracker isn't a good example for gaming...)
- Shenaniganz08, on 08/27/2008, -1/+7true but nothing beats a good d-pad for sidescrollers
- keviniskool, on 08/27/2008, -2/+9It doesn't and stop calling me Shirley.
- Culero, on 08/27/2008, -6/+2I'd say so. And don't call me Surely.
- MScrip, on 08/27/2008, -0/+5But now you can enjoy games on the iPhone's gorgeous 3.5in screen and not stick your fingers all over it.
- linagee, on 08/27/2008, -1/+2A touch screen is not good enough to play 99% of the games out there. Stupid apple.
- Justin6512, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1I agree, this would be reversing the whole point of the iPhone's innovation. Think of all the money apple spent perfecting their touch screen technology. They wanted to create a phone first with media and internet functionality built in that would go un-matched. They never said that they were designing the next big hand held gaming console.
- LennyX, on 08/26/2008, -3/+40I'd say it enhances it. The problem with emulators on the iPhone/iPod Touch has been that the buttons are usually watermarked over the screen and you have no feel of where the buttons are and slip off them too easily. Annoying.
- Evilblobs, on 08/26/2008, -13/+5Well it cant work much worse than an accelerometer [which makes a gamepad look like a precision controller].
- Archaic1, on 08/26/2008, -18/+39Now all it needs is a lower case "i" at the start of it's name, some brightly coloured advertising and a stupidly high price tag and it'll be ready to ship!
- JuanBSU, on 08/27/2008, -0/+11Apparently you're being buried for the truth...?
- robdazomba, on 08/27/2008, -5/+0No, buried for rehashing a joke that wasn't even that witty back in 2002.
- 4ntHony, on 08/27/2008, -0/+10What about the crappy indie song in the commercial?
- JayD16, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3Apple commercials are where indie songs go to die...
- Katana314, on 08/27/2008, -0/+4What about games?
Oh, wait, if it has an i in it I don't care. - mb3581, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3http://www.icontrolpad.com
- JuanBSU, on 08/27/2008, -0/+11Apparently you're being buried for the truth...?
- kevL0CK, on 08/26/2008, -1/+19if the gamepad has a built-in battery pack then i'll be very pleased.
granted, it's a touchscreen device, but why can't we have both? DS does.... technically.- JayD16, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1What do you mean technically?
- kevL0CK, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1a stylus is "ghey."
- JayD16, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1What do you mean technically?
- kronzdigg, on 08/26/2008, -11/+49yes but will it play crysis?
- Revolution101, on 08/27/2008, -12/+3***** you two of my friends died while raping this meme etc etc...
- damian7, on 08/27/2008, -4/+8***** you two of my friends died while two of your friends were raping this meme etc etc...
- KielKilla, on 08/27/2008, -1/+1NO. ***** you! Two of my friends died while your friends died while his friends died raping some meme.
- damack, on 08/27/2008, -6/+1LOL I thought that was beaten to death with the "will it play doom" thing but thats very creative use, very funny
- Revolution101, on 08/27/2008, -0/+11....you've never seen that before?
- DaffyDuck, on 08/27/2008, -2/+4will it play crysis is the new will it play doom.
- robdazomba, on 08/27/2008, -3/+0No, but your mother did last night.
- Revolution101, on 08/27/2008, -12/+3***** you two of my friends died while raping this meme etc etc...
- blakespot, on 08/26/2008, -7/+8This control pad + the iPhone's integrated (unique) controls make for the ideal mobile game platform. Can't wait to get my hands on an attachable pad.
- benologist, on 08/27/2008, -1/+2I don't think so. If you didn't need to lug around an accessory to play games then it would.
Apple and Sony need to team up for an iPhone/PSP combo.
- benologist, on 08/27/2008, -1/+2I don't think so. If you didn't need to lug around an accessory to play games then it would.
- Sunscreen, on 08/26/2008, -15/+9I want my iPhone to be PRODUCTIVE, not an gaming device. I'll stick to my PSP ;)
- breakaway, on 08/27/2008, -2/+7What are you doing with an iPhone then? Go buy a blackberry.
- bippitybop1, on 08/27/2008, -8/+2I would murder to get a portable version of warhawk on my iphone
- waynehoggett, on 08/27/2008, -1/+3Don't you mean a portable version of Warhawk on your PSP? FFS
- bippitybop1, on 08/27/2008, -2/+2no dude that's a picture of an iphone
- waynehoggett, on 08/27/2008, -1/+3Don't you mean a portable version of Warhawk on your PSP? FFS
- RgyaGramShad, on 08/28/2008, -4/+2please let this work for the NES emulator…
too bad if i bought one of these, i'd have to take off my case every time i wanted to play mario… - ronnsprocket, on 08/27/2008, -1/+69i designed a controller out of cardboard...
http://flickr.com/photos/43474966@N00/sets/7215759 ...- rootnik, on 08/27/2008, -0/+12Outstanding work!
- solidus636, on 08/27/2008, -0/+5That's ***** awesome!
- AzureRise, on 08/27/2008, -0/+5That's pretty badass!
- bradleyland, on 08/27/2008, -0/+5Can you make these in quantity?
- RedS0x, on 08/27/2008, -0/+4Cube Runner is amazing.
- ronnsprocket, on 08/27/2008, -0/+9I guess I could? Would anyone buy these?
- solidus636, on 08/27/2008, -0/+5Hells yes!
- Nouman6, on 08/27/2008, -4/+7Yea, no thanks. The battery life is already low enough. (yes I am aware similar devices have worse battery life, no need to get anal)
Unless someone is smart enough to make these devices actually contain their own battery, I don't see much playing time.- kefkaantakrist, on 08/27/2008, -0/+0That's a brilliant idea. Make it like a Mophie... it's a controller, and it adds battery life! Woohoo!
- Br3ach, on 08/27/2008, -1/+4Awesome idea, though there would have to be a serious turnaround in game development for iPhones to make it worth it over getting a PSP or a DS.
- Tahiri, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2iPhone will never be a valid competitor to PSP/DS due to the cost/contract and battery life
- PilotHead, on 08/27/2008, -1/+1Plus u don't have to play MONTHLY to own PSP/DS
- XxtraLarGe, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1You don't have to pay monthly to own an iPod Touch either...
- PilotHead, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1let's not forget the lack of speakers on an iPod Touch either....
- Armor1901, on 08/27/2008, -4/+8Am I the only one here that has zero interst in this gamepad thing for the iPhone? I like mine just the way it is, thank you.
- imacmike, on 08/27/2008, -6/+2WANT.
Reminds me a lot of my Tapwave Zodiac in terms of form factor. Up until the iPhone, that was my favorite thing I had in my pocket.- Tahiri, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2I own one of those, my iPhone replaced it as my PDA
- SirLoinChop, on 08/27/2008, -8/+7if you weren't a big enough loser already...
- rootnik, on 08/27/2008, -7/+3I know this sounds crazy, but this is making me consider getting an iphone. If the specs are good enough to support a decent amount of emulation, I'm game.
- lead2thehead, on 08/27/2008, -6/+0Hopefully the production version won't look like it was made with a hammer and chisel.
- Shenaniganz08, on 08/27/2008, -5/+1wow today is the first day ive realize that Digg is about 1 day behind in terms of Iphone stories
( refer to wikipanion thread as well ) - p3rsius, on 08/27/2008, -6/+1we need something that connects to a device that reacts with adult videos
- WestonP, on 08/27/2008, -6/+2I can see the use for some types of games, but I'm more interested in games (and apps) that innovate enough to make good use of the multi-touch screen and/or accelerometers. Apple has provided a foundation for building some pretty interesting things.
- Leehro, on 08/27/2008, -4/+4Apple won't support it in the SDK, leaving developers to implement their support. Even if they do, Apple won't let them help each other with APIs/drivers either (Effing NDA). I'd be really surprised if the App Store approved a game that needed this, so I figure it will wither and die.
It could be great for emulators under jailbreak, but it's just one more accessory you don't want to bring along. I had a BenQ G250 gamepad for an old iPAQ, and that was about the most useless thing ever. Even with emulators and great game ports. - Wangeye, on 08/27/2008, -11/+3I WANT AN IPHONE CUZ IT'S TRENDY.
- Psygnosis, on 08/27/2008, -1/+2cool, maybe something like this could add an external speaker and mic for the touch.
- gl77, on 08/27/2008, -5/+4wow. the iphone was so "innovative" with their touch screens. now with these you're just going backwards.
- Tahiri, on 08/27/2008, -1/+1Um, removing tactile response is going backwards.
Putting it back in (via this controller) is catching up. - krustytroll, on 08/27/2008, -2/+2if you ask me it's actually going forward with this move. apple is probably trying to compete in the handheld gaming market such as the psp and ds. with this new gaming controller add-on, more game developers will be willing to add games to the iphone, thus bigger marketshare for the iphone gaming.
- krustytroll, on 08/27/2008, -1/+2i forgot to add, recently sony announced the new psp-3000 which would have voip capability. they are obviously trying to dive into each other's marketshare.
- Tahiri, on 08/27/2008, -1/+1Um, removing tactile response is going backwards.
- gearhead364, on 08/27/2008, -2/+1good old rapid prototyping
- anyone4apint, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3It seems that I am in the minority for not wanting to bolt any crap onto my phone and actually just use it as a phone. I will stick to my DS for a mobile gaming fix.
- mwalker05, on 08/27/2008, -1/+3if you want a touchscreen device that has buttons, get a ds. they acutally make good games for those.
- krustytroll, on 08/27/2008, -1/+1next thing on apple's to-do list is to probably upgrade the iphone's vibration to resemble sony's dualshock force-feedback. though i think it's present in some games already.
- Lounger540, on 08/27/2008, -3/+3Most of the above comments are just completely dumb.
1) Yes, buttons on a touch device. It's being targeted towards jailbroken apps and emulators. They're the only apps that can even communicate with the serial port. And emulators run games that were designed for BUTTONS.
2) I highly doubt this will eat any extra battery that you could even measure.
3) It's ugly because it's a ***** prototype.
I think I'm done with digg. It's become filled with idiots.- PilotHead, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1it's not diggers fault
it's a combination of stupid uninformed gamers and apple fanboys, creating an unholy creature, which Apple has manage to mass produce.
Too horrible to live, to rare to die
- PilotHead, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1it's not diggers fault
- mogebier, on 08/27/2008, -7/+1That is the gayest thing I have ever seen.
IT'S A ***** PHONE!!!! - roessnakhan, on 08/28/2008, -0/+10It kind of makes me sad that my iPhone has more games on it than my mac can.
- XxtraLarGe, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1While technically not true, I know where you're coming from. One thing to consider though is that to develop any software for the iPhone you have to have a Mac & program using Cocoa & OpenGL ES. I think this will actually lead to more developers thinking to themselves "Hey, maybe I should start making Mac games too!"
- artkiver, on 08/27/2008, -1/+3I would rather have an iphone add on QWERTY keyboard.
- NaziHatinChimp, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1Needs two Joypads. You could make better controls with 2 shoulder buttons and 2 joysticks than you could from 6 buttons and one joystick.
- mynameistux, on 08/27/2008, -7/+5buried for iPhone
iAm sick of iT
and down iGo- Archaic1, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2Why did you click on this article then?
- jaycalgary, on 08/27/2008, -1/+0How fast does quake 3 load on the iphone?
- tomis, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1This will only take off if there's a common interface for apps to communicate with external input devices like pads/keyboards/whatever. So far, there isn't. So it's useless until then. No, jailbroken apps don't count.
- MacTyler, on 08/27/2008, -2/+2Not a mockup just a copy of an existing handhelds design.
http://www.zodiacresource.com/Tapwave2.0/About.php - LastDitchHero, on 08/27/2008, -0/+0Maybe these will be as successful as the Pippin
- PilotHead, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2it's already the size of a Sega GameGear now
Just give it up, im not going to turn my screen to the joint where i can barely see it and try using my thumbs at the same time. - beerbarron, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3Its interesting that theres a lot of comments shunning the idea :-s but when the phone first had games everyone was like omg need buttons!
- Electricpigdigg, on 08/27/2008, -0/+2So it seems the answer to making the iPhone more game friendly is to turn it into a PSP....
- Echomote, on 08/31/2008, -0/+1iControlpad is jailbreak only, appstore games wont be able to use it.
- rubored, on 09/01/2008, -0/+1Oooo, an SNES is ALWAYS a good amount of SNES!
