- johnred, on 12/22/2007, -1/+24Stepwise was a great site that really helped out the Mac dev community. This is really unfortunate. Rixstep is a total *****.
- reepax, on 12/22/2007, -30/+3mac dev community? mac users can barely handle turning their computers on and off
- happyseamonster, on 12/22/2007, -2/+15We don't have to reboot and when we do it so fast we miss it. Die troll.
- reepax, on 12/22/2007, -10/+3Hi, I am a linux user. I believe we invented the uptime competitions. Thanks.
- jcaino, on 12/22/2007, -0/+3reepax, we all owe it to similar *nix roots, which were developed with similar mindsets and views on the way operating systems should function. windows kinda did that with the *nix roots, but not the same views...and well, it has had an effect in the long run.
- Lyph5, on 12/22/2007, -1/+10jcaino, BSD is where OS X is rooted. And BSD will ALWAYS be superior to Linux.
- BlueStarr, on 12/22/2007, -1/+5You!?! You haven't invented *****.

- NSResponder, on 12/22/2007, -2/+6He's rather obnoxious on developer mailing lists, too.

- Zorlen, on 12/22/2007, -1/+8Hopefully the community will help Stepwise to protect its copyright and shame/destroy Rixstep. This nut needs to go.
- NSResponder, on 12/22/2007, -2/+6The Mac community would be far better off it Rick Downes would sod off and specialize in Windows development, that's for sure.
-jcr - fkr3, on 12/22/2007, -6/+1Why? Is Rixstep doing anything that Weblogs Inc, Gawker Media and all the other "pro" blogs aren't doing? Taking someone else's work and putting your ads around it is a pseudo-acceptable behaviour in the blogosphere now.
- NSResponder, on 12/22/2007, -2/+6The Mac community would be far better off it Rick Downes would sod off and specialize in Windows development, that's for sure.
- rickcarson, on 12/22/2007, -3/+13The removal of his own site in response will achieve what? Not only is the reaction entirely disproportionate to the offense (MacWorld 1998 for cripes sake! Was there even OS X back then?) but I went over to the rixstep site to try to find the offending material to see what the big deal is, and it is so poorly organised that I couldn't find whatever it was.
Moreover, even if the Mac developer community did have a mass uprising, what are we supposed to do about it? How are _we_ supposed to enforce _his_ copyright? That is so backwards it beggars the imagination. No, the appropriate response is to fire off some legal mumbo-jumbo to whoever is hosting rixstep, and make vague DMCA allegations and get the bozos site pulled faster than Clinton can zip up. If you're really upset, then you fill out a change of owner form (1pwnzorU.pdf from ICANN).
In the past when I've seen someone pull their site for similar small infractions, they have usually been thinking about giving up for a while, and are just looking for any excuse to blame it on someone else.- NSResponder, on 12/22/2007, -2/+6The issue is that Rick Downes is 1) using material he doesn't own, and 2) misrepresenting Scott's views on the matter. This isn't a small infraction, it's a copyright violation which he refuses to remedy.
-jcr - anamanaman, on 12/22/2007, -5/+3I think you hit the nail on the head. Stepwise has been pretty low activity lately. Not too many people interested in WebObjects any more, and theres not really that much Cocoa stuff on it.
He's just using this as a dumb excuse to take the site down- tyrione, on 12/22/2007, -0/+4Sott works for Apple now. Stepwise is a site he continues for the Development Community, at large.

- mleh, on 12/22/2007, -1/+7I believe Rixstep also stole the Darwin 'Come In - It's Open' icon and is using it on his rather hokey Rix* "applications".
- totorototoro, on 12/22/2007, -0/+7no one takes Rixstep seriously anyways, come on. Its a parody site for everyone in the mac community, isn't it? :p
- monkeyrun, on 12/22/2007, -0/+5I used to go to Stepwise a lot. And I never heard of that Rixstep site.
- anamanaman, on 12/22/2007, -11/+4What a ***** baby
- streak, on 12/22/2007, -2/+10Rixstep is a turd.
- dualaudi, on 12/22/2007, -9/+4OMG! from 1999? Reminds me of a prince song...
I think I'll pull my site down and complain that waybackmachine.org has stolen my information and reposted it w/o my permission...
If anything have sir rix a lot reference where he got the material... - dualaudi, on 12/22/2007, -10/+2Also, better get someone on this http://209.85.173.104/search?q=cache:S-pzN3jXyxQJ: ...
i don't think google asked for permission to repost this.- Lyph5, on 12/22/2007, -0/+5There is a difference between a cache and re-posting it as original content.
The fact that you made two posts and still don't understand that.. well, that's the reason the good conversation happens at slashdot.- NSResponder, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1Down's didn't just copy it. He's also misrepresenting Scott's position.

- sfacets, on 12/22/2007, -1/+3Let us show Rixstep a bit of Digg "love".
- objc, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1We're going to send Rixstep links to Ron Paul and that Apple whale tail chick?? ;-)
- sfacets, on 12/22/2007, -0/+2What is the domain's registrar? No records on any whois services...
- Rupan, on 12/22/2007, -1/+2Wait, there are still NeXTSTEP Developers?
- NSResponder, on 12/22/2007, -0/+2That depends on your definition. Do you mean people who are writing code for NeXTSTEP *today*, or people who can write code for NeXTSTEP?
I have a NeXTSTATION on the desk next to my Mac, which I haven't needed to use since Apple finally shipped their spreadsheet.
-jcr - streak, on 12/22/2007, -0/+3You never wondered what NS stands for in Apple's current APIs?
- SqAR, on 12/22/2007, -3/+2It means [N]eXT-[S]un and so it is OpenStep heritage
- ilgaz, on 12/23/2007, -0/+1OS X could be considered NextStep. Don't swear at NextStep because of some Internet trolls. Omni Group is a NeXT company too.
- NSResponder, on 12/22/2007, -0/+2That depends on your definition. Do you mean people who are writing code for NeXTSTEP *today*, or people who can write code for NeXTSTEP?
- MonkeyOverlord, on 12/22/2007, -0/+7Why not use the law to his advantage? Just send the hosting company a DMCA takedown notice.
- DocDEB, on 12/22/2007, -4/+2Hmmm... visited the Rixstep site and read the article. It is attributed to Scott Anguish though no link is provided to the original article (of course if it was it would now be dead). Since the Stepwise site has been taken down I can not compare what is on Rixstep to the original. Any comments on Rixstep seem to be distinguished from the article. I don't see any obvious misrepresentation. You read it and make your own conclusions and accept others' opinions as just that.
Of course it would have been better to get permission to quote and or link to the material. Also if the owner of the material objected to its use then it would be appropriate to take it down with an explanation. - Arcadian, on 12/22/2007, -4/+2The who did what to who now?
- maaaaark, on 12/22/2007, -0/+4Didn't see this posted, but such a great read (via Gruber's twitter): http://toxicsoftware.com/a-special-kind-of-idiot/
- JoeLeo, on 12/22/2007, -4/+1I think what Rixstep did was despicable.
But, I think Stepwise was dead and Scott's over reacting. - diem, on 12/29/2007, -3/+0I have to say I agree with this blog post - http://www.seanmcollins.com/blog/?p=79 . Based on research rather than knee-jerk hysteria, it makes it obvious that the use of the Stepwise content in the Rixstep article was clearly quotation and as such perfectly legal. As Mr. Anguish himself has said on John Welch's blog, this kerfuffle has been "much ado"; I wouldn't wish to mis-quote him, but I think it's safe to assume he's referring to the Shakespeare play Much Ado About Nothing yes?
As far as I can see, all the Rixstep article did was draw together what Mr. Anguish's reports already made clear, no more no less. Okay so the site author has a caustic style - do you defame a newspaper journalist just because you don't like what he says in his column? No, you just don't read it. - Stolenflipflops, on 01/23/2008, -0/+0I agree with the specualtion of this being a reason to cordially "bow out" of the market on Stepwise's part.
- rangerangel, on 05/15/2008, -1/+0I believe Rixstep also stole the Darwin 'Come In - It's Open' icon and is using it on his rather hokey Rix* "applications"
