- TheWorm, on 07/10/2008, -0/+4Yeah, but no one really cares
- kurtless, on 07/10/2008, -38/+64Why take a risk when the official 2.0 is just around the corner
- popflop, on 07/10/2008, -0/+134This is straight off of Apple's website, I'd say the risk is negligible.
- Me1000, on 07/10/2008, -3/+11The risk is non-existent if anything did somehow go wrong (that you cant fix) just wait till it is official then call apple and say your update ***** up.
- loveageek, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2I did it its ***** awesome!
- aahmed753, on 07/10/2008, -8/+2It's not check the main domain.. http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net which belongs to edgesuite.net, if i understand correctly.
- drouk1556, on 07/10/2008, -0/+7Edgesuite is a media delivery system. The original content is sourced from apple.com, transferred to Akamai's Edge servers, and then delivered in a faster, more efficient manner.
- Philbert, on 07/10/2008, -5/+3If it's still not officially released yet Apple could still make some change to it, that's the risk.
- coldfusion1970, on 07/10/2008, -0/+5One day before release?
Not likely.
- robbh66, on 07/10/2008, -1/+74I took the risk and it works.
AppStore is working too- at least it did for the remote.- Firehed, on 07/10/2008, -1/+3Yep, App Store is working great. Got a few freebies, and also bought Trism for five bucks.
- digitallysick, on 07/10/2008, -0/+30Because life is fun when you take risks
- Me1000, on 07/10/2008, -0/+33because I want Super Monkey Ball NOW...
- Philbert, on 07/10/2008, -3/+1I've seen it in the app store on iTunes, but I don't know if you can actually buy it yet.
- Me1000, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3You can, I have already bought it and played it...
- newstart, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1I will wait for tomorrow. I have updated my iTune to 7.7 in the meantime and was expecting an AppStore link but its not there. Maybe it will appear tomorrow? Also if you search iTunes store for iPhone, App store, App etc. It is now listing iPhone applications along with albums with a Get App button.
- pilot3033, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1If you enable the "Applications" tab in preferences (where you might disable the "audio books" tab for instance) there is a link straight to the app store just like there is a link to the podcasts lobby in the podcast tab.
iTunes remote FTW - Philbert, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1I've enabled Applications, but when I click it I only get a blank page. The only way I've been able to get in is like this:
1) Go to your itunes store home.
2) Right click on the music link and copy the address.
3) Paste into your browser.
4) Change the id in the URL to 36. - Dokkodo, on 07/10/2008, -0/+0Bottom right in iTunes application screen - "Get More Applications"

- antiorblkflag9, on 07/10/2008, -2/+3Yeah, I just lost all of my music on my iPod trying to update before I saw it said "Not for use with iPod touches"
- scootinger, on 07/11/2008, -1/+2I don't think Apple would make it available to us poor Touch owners for free that easily....
screw you Apple.
- scootinger, on 07/11/2008, -1/+2I don't think Apple would make it available to us poor Touch owners for free that easily....
- Weaselboy, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1I installed it and it works just fine.
- bradleyland, on 07/10/2008, -1/+7I just downloaded, sync'd, option-clicked update, chose the firmware file, received an "unknown error" dialog, and am now "restoring" my phone before I can proceed. Stock phone, no mods, never jailbroken.
Proceed at your own risk.- mohrt, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1works fine. be sure to upgrade iTunes to 7.7 or you get errors.
- frascellyboy273, on 07/10/2008, -2/+1but 7.7 isnt out yet??? i checked for updates and it says 7.6.2 is the latest
- mrraven200, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1Who needs it with jailbreak? Serious question BTW, is there really anything that great 2.0 will do for an itouch?
- ravage86, on 07/10/2008, -8/+1No, 2.0 came out in June? Didn't you read the announcements several months ago?
- InorganicMatter, on 07/10/2008, -1/+2There is no risk. Do you really think this will even install if iTunes doesn't find half a dozen Apple checksums and signatures?
- war1o, on 07/10/2008, -1/+2Jumping in front of a hungry, rabid bear while mooning him and taunting him is a risk. Downloading an iPhone firmware from Apple, um... that's hardly one.
- NitrousFlare, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2Works 100% for me
Remote is an awesome application btw.
- popflop, on 07/10/2008, -0/+134This is straight off of Apple's website, I'd say the risk is negligible.
- Nitrus, on 07/10/2008, -21/+9I'll just wait for the legit one to come out.
- theliamburns1, on 07/10/2008, -3/+19..... This is from Apple's Server.
It is legit.- StandardsDT, on 07/10/2008, -1/+2He means the official release, for all's we know there could still be some problems with the one up on the server.
- aahmed753, on 07/10/2008, -4/+1It's not. check the main domain.. http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net which belongs to edgesuite.net, if i understand correctly.

- theliamburns1, on 07/10/2008, -3/+19..... This is from Apple's Server.
- shaffah, on 07/10/2008, -8/+1yea, and apple says they will create a one-time media backup of the data
- Tddupre, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1yea that wont be hard to get around
/sarcasm- Firehed, on 07/10/2008, -0/+4What's to get around? It's just so re-syncing the first time afterwards is easier.
Which, for the record, did NOT work properly for me; then again, I did it from my work computer and I normally sync up at home. Oh well, at least I was able to test out the push calendars and contacts which work great.
- Firehed, on 07/10/2008, -0/+4What's to get around? It's just so re-syncing the first time afterwards is easier.
- Tddupre, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1yea that wont be hard to get around
- LumpOfCole, on 07/10/2008, -22/+15If this were a week or 2 weeks ago, it would be another story. But one day from the official release? Not worth the risk.
- theliamburns1, on 07/10/2008, -7/+36Ooooo. You scared?
- hagfish70, on 07/10/2008, -0/+6yeah tooling around with these awesome apps is sooooo dangerous.
- theliamburns1, on 07/10/2008, -7/+36Ooooo. You scared?
- walkingcrow, on 07/10/2008, -8/+15So how long for the jail break and unlock? Might not be to long.
http://www.ziphone.org/search/label/iphone%202g%20 ...- newstart, on 07/10/2008, -11/+5Why the hell do you wanna jail break now? Dont you see the jail break thing is now over since we now get Apps on the iPhone.
- br0ken1128, on 07/10/2008, -3/+14You must be joking .. you couldn't possibly have posted that and meant it, because that just makes you look like a moron..
Jail Break is over? .. what about those folks who don't use AT&T? they will need a jailbroken/unlocked 2.0 ..
What about apps that won't make it to the app store? such as SwirlyMMS which requires more than the official API provides? .. SwirlyMMS is just an example.. There are plenty of reasons to Jail Break the phone ..
And even if there were no need for it ... people would still want to do it anyway .. so it's never going to end unless Apple finds a way to permanently keep people out. - newstart, on 07/10/2008, -2/+7Ok I agree with you regarding running iPhone on non AT&T networks. For that yea Jail break is necessary. But the 2.0 firmware update atleast fixes one issue and this is of 3rd party apps. Maybe in the near future when Apple allows iPhone to be run on every GSM network with normal plans just like other phones then maybe Jailbreak wont be necessary.
- bryantthesmith, on 07/10/2008, -2/+6Apple isn't allowing every small potato developer to sell (or give away) apps on the app store. The waiting list to be accepted into the developer program is miles long. Most of the cool apps you get with Jailbreak won't be available in the app store because the developers who wrote them aren't approved by Apple. The only thing about the 2.0 upgrade that tempts me is the enterprise support, and i will most likely be able to get that without the upgrade. The Reg has a preview of the available apps on the app store at:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/07/10/iphone_app ...
Looks pretty disappointing. - br0ken1128, on 07/10/2008, -2/+1Exactly ... until the day arrives that I can use my iphone with my current carrier, and developers have more freedom to get their apps on the app store, there exists a reason to jailbreak/unlock ..
- marksands07, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3I had my iPhone jailbroken basically for a buggy twinkle and showtime video capture. I'm guessing there's a lot of people out there, like me, who doesn't care about any of those other apps. So the new 2.0 firmware + app store will keep my iPhone NOT jailbroken.
- championchap, on 07/10/2008, -2/+5Wait wait wait, if your problem is that the iPhone is on a carrier that you dont like.. or that what it provides isnt what you want.. then dont buy it!
Seriously, if you dont want to pay the contract, and you want unofficial apps that in my experience have been poorly made interface wise and actually made my iPhone feel "cheap" then buy a different phone!
I jailbroke my iPhone twice, and restored it twice.
Not worth the fuss, and some of the apps actually broke my phone.
The keyboard one for example broke my sound, nothing would play out of the iPhone speakers till i restored the phone. No thanks. - PunkRampant, on 07/10/2008, -3/+3Can't get themes from the App Store. I'll stay jailbroken so I can keep my Buuf 2.
- br0ken1128, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1I have unlimited data, unlimited texting, unlimited MMS and 1500 minutes plus free nights and weekends for 75/mo .. Plus I can use that MMS part of my plan because I have a jailbroken phone running swirlymms which will NOT be in the app store. .. if I can jailbreak I get best of both worlds.. app store and installer apps ..it's a no brainer
Sorry Championchap .. but I happen to like my iPhone .. with the features I added, on a carrier that isn't AT&T .. so I don't think I'll be taking the "don't buy it!" advice ..
I gave other reasons people would want a jailbreak ... lots of apps in installer that won't be in the app store.. including themes... get real .. this isn't a one size fits all world .. if I can make my phone work on another carrier (and it's perfectly legal!) .. I shall do it .. and enjoy my cheaper bill while all you AT&T folks pay more.
- br0ken1128, on 07/10/2008, -3/+14You must be joking .. you couldn't possibly have posted that and meant it, because that just makes you look like a moron..

- harmil, on 07/10/2008, -2/+11Anyone figure out how to load this firmware from the Windows iTunes? Under MacOS, it seems you hold "Option" while pressing "Check for Update". Under Windows, there's no Option key, so I tried Alt and Ctrl to no avail... lots of combos, right-clicking, etc. Nothing.

- liquilife, on 07/10/2008, -10/+3Be careful. This solution will likely wipe out all your contacts, data and saved settings.
- theliamburns1, on 07/10/2008, -1/+9No. Wrong.
- mratomika, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1Actually. When we jailbroke my buddies phone on his Windows Machine, he did not have backups of his contacts anywhere . . . so yes I think it is possible to wipe your contacts. Mac users are just accustomed to everything being sync'd for them . . .
- sleepwalkers, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3If you use iTunes (which you probably are with an iPhone), contacts, data and settings are automatically backed up. It has nothing to do with using a Mac.
- liquilife, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Well, I stand corrected. I have 2.0 running on my iPhone via the PC. I backed up and had the option to restore my data, contacts, SMS, etc.. I will have to sync my music again but that's no big deal.

- sn0wmis3r, on 07/10/2008, -0/+7I am in the same boat as you, what I am planning to do is backup everything, and restore my phone (removing the jailbreak/unlock), upgrade to 2.0, then unlock again

- wkeown, on 07/10/2008, -1/+5Just upgraded and works fine but it erased everything. I thought it was going to prompt me to make a backup...I'm just a tad pissed.
- Maikaaru, on 07/10/2008, -0/+0I wasn't asked to create a backup either...
- mohrt, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1you always do a sync before you upgrade.

- JasonCox, on 07/10/2008, -0/+6You're not the only one who tried... :-)
I wonder if the package for the iPod Touch will be DRM'd, i.e. if one person pays for and downloads it, can it just be redistributed like any other IPSW and will it end up buried in some Support article on Apple's website like all the others? - lexph0enix, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1no problems here. been playing with it for over an hr now :)
- digitallysick, on 07/10/2008, -7/+2I know what i am doing when i get home from work! 2.0 firmware + jailbreak = my iphone on ebay tonight any takers? I will even throw in an Aliph jawbone headset
- goosegoose, on 07/10/2008, -0/+8works fine. finally aim on my iPhone. just be warned that it will take forever.. it's a restore to 2.0 . so you have to re sync your entire music again.
- joeycerone, on 07/10/2008, -4/+1worked for me! whooohooooooooooo
- Sunscreen, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1totally forgot about that!

I think my phone died.- mrowlinson, on 07/10/2008, -1/+14you need to update to version 7.7 of itunes. i was getting that error too until i upgraded
- MCA2142, on 07/10/2008, -1/+9I can't even begin to thank you.

- bradleyland, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1You know, they could have mentioned that on the page with the link to the firmware. I didn't even know 7.7 was out.
- MCA2142, on 07/10/2008, -1/+9I can't even begin to thank you.
- jjlee, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1I had the same thing... upgrade to iTunes 7.7 first.
- cj485, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1what a shame! i guess you'll HAVE to get a 3g iphone now...
- gelgels, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1Put your iPhone in recovery mode, then restore it. You should have the option to restore it from a backup. It happened to me too.

- BurgerPunch, on 07/10/2008, -2/+1can already get band for free if you jailbreak 1.1.4

- mratomika, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Just upgraded to 2.0 and just added NetNewsWire . . . I just went into iPhone / RSS Nirvana!
- JasonCox, on 07/10/2008, -0/+4If you're on Windows, unplug your iPhone and plug it back in, if it's like the iPod, Windows should then install the Apple Recovery (iBoot) Driver and then you can restore it to the last good firmware from iTunes.
(Edit: I'm not kidding it's called 'iBoot') - reeldigitalpro, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Just updated mine! Worked perfectly, I'll be holding off on the 3g for sure.
- phrozen755, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1well...mine gave me some "error code (5)" thing, nuked it, had to install 1.4 again (removed all my crap), did that..lets see how this goes
- phrozen755, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1update: no beans...keep getting " The iPhone "iPhone" could not be updated. An unknown error occured (5) "
oh well...I'll have to wait for tomorrow - phrozen755, on 07/10/2008, -0/+4*edit* updated my itunes to 7.7, problem solved!

- kizzyle0508, on 07/10/2008, -1/+2i got monkeys in balls a whole 24 hours before most people
and it was so worth it- bbqsalad, on 07/10/2008, -0/+6Better go see a doctor.
- graddatadda, on 07/10/2008, -1/+8any word on Touch? Will we just have to wait less than 24 hours now?
- DelMonte, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1The update for the touch should be available tomorrow (July 11th)
But with the Appstore online and reading tons of accounts of people having fun with 2.0 on their iPhone I just couldn't wait and downloaded the iPod touch Firmware 2.0 (5A345) from "somewhere" on the internet. It's not that I didn't want to pay the $9.95, I'll do it when the official update is available.- Avian00, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1You mind sharing where you found it?
- DelMonte, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1The update for the touch should be available tomorrow (July 11th)
- CIAVT, on 07/10/2008, -1/+4First sync after the update takes ages, just a heads up.
- cozinator, on 07/10/2008, -1/+3I bet Apple does this on purpose, knowing the hardcore users will test it and make sure there aren't catastrophic bugs.
- etx313, on 07/10/2008, -2/+4Since this is the largest concentration of Apple / Iphone fan boys I know perhaps you guys can answer a question. My clients keep asking for iphone apps for their business. How can I get a new 3g version without a service contract, just for development? I need to work on these applications people want, that serve no real purpose and are basically just useless turds with my clients logo so that they can tell everyone they had a iphone application first.
- knickboy87, on 07/10/2008, -0/+6You can buy one for $599 for 8GB with no contract
- jaredmauch, on 07/10/2008, -1/+4buy an ipod touch instead. you can do app development there and with the sdk without a service contract.
- dinkola, on 07/10/2008, -0/+8If its just for development ... go to http://developer.apple.com/ and download the development enviroment. It comes with a virtual iPhone which you can deploy your applications to. You dont need an iPhone to create iPhone applications. Though I think the development enviroment (xcode & iphone sdk) is free, you need a Mac to run it.
- CMiYC, on 07/10/2008, -0/+8Download the SDK and use the iPhone simulator.
- sonofman1984, on 07/10/2008, -0/+5Very cool. You have to try out the lightsaber app. It makes lightsaber sounds as you swing around your iPhone...looking like an idiot. I'm going to film a video of myself doing it...ala "Star Wars Kid".
- br0ken1128, on 07/10/2008, -1/+2that's up there? .. wow I had that installed on my phone months ago ... makes me wonder how many of the old apps will end up in the store
- gcman94, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1Link?
- Virgule, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1http://themacbox.co.uk/phonesaber/
- gcman94, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1Nah I meant of you doing the star wars kid w/this app.
- sonofman1984, on 07/10/2008, -0/+6Exchange is working flawlessly as well. I didn't even need to call IT to get it up and running. I just used the webmail information.
- hagfish70, on 07/10/2008, -0/+5*****, there goes my job security... Damn apple and their simplicity!
- amneosis, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Hi sonofman - are you on a business contract? does Over The Air exchange emails/ contacts all work with just the webmail login? I'm very keen to find out, cheers.
- hotcoffeeburns, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1works great for me
