- GoldenChaos, on 06/09/2008, -25/+15I can't get over the cheapness of a plastic back. I loved the aluminum because it represented something that Apple always stood for - quality build and construction. When you hold an Apple device, it feels rock-solid. Even the Air feels like it could survive a fifty foot fall. A plastic back cheapens the unit - not to mention gives it the opportunity for millions of HORRIBLY ugly fingerprints now both on the front AND back of the device - and makes me feel as though it'll get completely scratched up just by gently putting it on a table.
Plastic is really soft. I'd believe that the back would break, or at least scratch, very easily. My fingernails will probably be able to put deep creases in the plastic... but I hope not. A sharper object most certainly could, such as a knife, which it wouldn't have been able to do when the back was aluminum.
When am I going to take a knife to my iPhone? Never, of course, but it doesn't change the fact that a five foot drop for the iPhone 3G now means a gigantic crack in your iPhone's back, as opposed to a more reasonable and less cost-critical dent.- britblogger, on 06/09/2008, -6/+6***** whining, always someone whining. surely the offset of the brushed aluminum back to reduce cost wasn't enough for you, or the introduction of 3G.
jesus. - TSSaloic, on 06/09/2008, -1/+19The metal backing also blocked radio signals in version 1.0. The all plastic back is likely the same plastic that iPhone 1.0 had at the bottom, which was durable but still allowed communication to the towers. Also the GPS antenna might need more room than the small strip would allow for.
- gimmeslack12, on 06/09/2008, -3/+21How many times have you thought "That new Apple product looks cheap". And changed your mind once you had one in front of you? I'm sure its as elegant as always.
- senatorpjt, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2Yeah, remember that if you look at an iphone now, the bottom quarter of the back is already black plastic. It doesn't have to be the same soft crap they used on the nano. The bottom of mine is barely scratched.
- roberto_deneero, on 06/10/2008, -1/+6How bout you work on that dexterity sonny? I haven't ever dropped a mobile phone. Hold it like a man and you don't have to worry about damaging it whatsoever. Grasp it like the pansy you are and you better buy two while you're in line.
- GliTCH82, on 06/11/2008, -1/+1Well, us real men with big manly hands and fingers can't always finesse our iPhones out of our pockets like Miss Prissy-Fingers over here. It's an iPhone, everyone knows what it looks like, quit showing that ***** off and put a jimmy-hat on it. Also, steer clear of areas with jagged rocks.
- jabberwolf, on 06/10/2008, -5/+6So basically:
Its finally up to par with other 3G phones
Its cheaper (a good thing)
It's made with plastic instead (not good thing). Sorry OTHER phones have a aluminum backing.
It has ASSISTED GPS ( meaning no independent GPS)
And that took all of a year????
That's what I call LACK of innovation!- gimmeslack12, on 06/10/2008, -1/+3Find whatever dumb thing to nitpick apart, but you really have to consider that the 2.0 software has really been the big development here. You ever consider that the new hardware has been ready to go, but needed the software with it? I don't mind people arguing over Apple's products but for godsakes THINK before spouting off about the obvious issues. Apple is smart they have a plan.
- sadilak, on 06/10/2008, -2/+0so what the heck is Assisted GPS??. Is it akin to Virtual CD Drive?
- 1platypus, on 06/10/2008, -0/+0Assisted GPS was created to enhance GPS performance. jabberwolf doesn't know what he is talking about.

- zenrhe, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1I like hte fact theres a major price drop, and if that means a plastic back, i'm all for it.
- britblogger, on 06/09/2008, -6/+6***** whining, always someone whining. surely the offset of the brushed aluminum back to reduce cost wasn't enough for you, or the introduction of 3G.
- kemuelste, on 06/09/2008, -6/+20now i can get it.
- rpgmaker, on 06/10/2008, -3/+6In my country a 1st gen iPhone will do just fine and now they will be more than affordable on ebay (US$150 or less). Good things will come for those who wait :D, I might end up with the US$200 3G tho.
And to think that I'm not even a fan of the touch technology or the iPhone itself but a phone + mp3 player + 3G + one of the best internet experience on the market (if not the best according to some critics) for US$200 its a pretty good deal to me. Good work Apple, thanks for providing good competition, Nokia and RIM really need it, especially Nokia if they keep with those high prices on the N series.- omniatlas, on 06/10/2008, -0/+8No, the prices of 1G iphones will now jack up because theres no way to get an iPhone now WITHOUT signing a contract.
A step backwards in my opinion.- cthellis, on 06/10/2008, -3/+1Not really. You can always pay the cancellation penalty, which will pretty much make it the same price. (You may even be able to jank things in-between. AT&T probably has specific rules about the iPhone, but they got better about their contracts and early termination/cancellation restrictions and costs.)
- Myztry, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2That should be interesting in Australia as Telco's are required under Australian law to allow the consumer the unlock the phone (with break costs).
They announced (on WinTV - Nine National News) tonight that 3G iPhone will be released in about a month, through Optus and Vodaphone. They made no mention of our largest provider Telstra although showed a phone with the logo on the display.
Soon enough we'll see how that unwinds. Nearly all mobile phones in Australia are 3G so it's not the breakthrough it may be in some other places. - synyster, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2wrong, in UK you can buy a pay as you go iPhone, which is you buy a iPhone and a sim card with out any money in it, but you will need to top up if you want to use it.
- omniatlas, on 06/10/2008, -0/+8No, the prices of 1G iphones will now jack up because theres no way to get an iPhone now WITHOUT signing a contract.
- DocHoliday22, on 06/10/2008, -3/+1After a whole year Apple produced iPhone 2, with the only major difference being the A-GPS and 3G that the existing iPhone can't do. Everything else just feels the same as the original.
- Lewiji, on 06/10/2008, -1/+4Improved battery life too. As someone who accesses the web a LOT on the iPhone, especially for business, I'll be upgrading for the 3G alone.
- DocHoliday22, on 06/10/2008, -1/+1You'll be also aquiring yourself a 2 year long contract, an extra £40 p/a, with a mediocre 1.8mbps 3G transfer which is like twice the speed of the existing one, the total cost of ownership of the iPhone will be over 1.5 k for the two years for the phone and contract PLUS you can't unlock the phone as all activation will be done in Apple stores or AT&T stores... I'll wait.
- Lewiji, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1I live in the UK. The contract isn't *****.

- gtownplaya, on 06/09/2008, -12/+3Frig that!
I live in a rural town, in Canada, and my area is not covered by Rogers or Fido.
What the hell!
Apple lost a sale.- littlemarcho, on 06/09/2008, -4/+14And yet gained about 1 billion!
- gtownplaya, on 06/09/2008, -5/+2Well, still, i'm sure i'm not the only one who would buy one.
Looks bad on their business I think. - ShinRaTDR, on 06/09/2008, -1/+4If anything, this will make Bell step their game up, you should be happy.
- gtownplaya, on 06/10/2008, -1/+1Thats what i'm hoping.
- Verdanic, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1APPARENTLY Telus is going to go 4G (can't remember where I heard that) next year (they skipped over 3G). I'm with them now and will be until my contract ends in this time next year, so I'd love for them to pick up the iPhone.
- gtownplaya, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1That would be amazing.
Thanks for that info.
so a 3G phone is still compatible with 4G network?
(sorry i'm not big on knowledge about the whole phone business)
- gtownplaya, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1That would be amazing.

- eighto2, on 06/09/2008, -7/+71Does it record video at least????
- TSSaloic, on 06/09/2008, -4/+63Maybe with a 3rd party app.
- synyster, on 06/10/2008, -0/+4there is a video recording app on installer.app atm( but it doesn't record sounds :(
- Skahara, on 06/10/2008, -2/+12It doesn't.
- jabberwolf, on 06/10/2008, -29/+22Nope
And for Business?? Nothing connecting to MS Exchange. Where was that promise Kept?
And Stereo Bluetooth?
Nope
So basically:
Its finally up to par with other 3G phones
Its cheaper (a good thing)
It's made with plastic instead (not good thing)
It has ASSISTED GPS ( meaning no independent GPS)
And that took all of a year????
That's what I call LACK of innovation!- nroose, on 06/10/2008, -3/+21Did you watch the pres?
It does support MS Exchange. - fugazied, on 06/10/2008, -2/+6I didn't see mention of assisted GPS, the other geographical plotters (wifi, mobile towers) are alternatives for when you can't access GPS for whatever reason.
- diggingaround, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1i.e. very crappy and cheap GPS receivers like the one built in your new iPhone... I'm just wondering why real GPS devices don't need assistance of cell phone towers, you know like the one people use in their cars. I wish that iPhone has WAAS instead of crappy cell phone triangulation technology ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waas ).
- jmreid, on 06/10/2008, -2/+15I think you should read about A-GPS. It's not a bad thing:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AGPS
And you are so wrong about Exchange support:
http://www.apple.com/iphone/enterprise/- diggingaround, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1Cheap GPS = A-GPS
Real GPS = GPS + WAAS http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waas
- diggingaround, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1Cheap GPS = A-GPS
- sadilak, on 06/10/2008, -3/+4Read about Assisted GPS . It is alright, but definitely, Apple could have done better than that. A dinky little blackberry pearl (The newer ones) has built in GPS( full fledged) while the iPhone does not. There must be a reason why Apple did not include full fledged GPS ( I hope it is not a hardware issue). I think Gen 1 owners should wait for the next iteration of iPhone.
On the other hand, the Average Joe or Jane do not know what the heck is A2DP or stereo bluetooth and they would not miss it a bit (They will be more than happy with the ear hurting white earphones).
Nor would they care about a plastic behind or Assisted GPS. Infact, they would hardly use the Assisted GPS option since they might already have a Garmin Nuvi or a Tom Tom or a Mio GPS device
- synyster, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2to be fair a full fledged GPS will require more battery, computing power and programming.
- barnett25, on 06/10/2008, -0/+3I don't want my phone taking the 30sec-2 minutes to acquire satellites like my tomtom. I'll take the A-GPS thanks.
- sadilak, on 06/10/2008, -0/+0 I do agree about the Assisted GPS part. In the case of the iPhone, it is better than regular GPS. But I am not sure if AT&T deserves extra money. Remember, the old 16 GB iPhone cost only $499 + No 2 year contract.
The current phone is $299 + ($10 x 24) + 2 year contract. THe $10 reflects the $30 plan(for New IPhone subscribers). Also remember that your phone is not insured (atleast I did not see that word anywhere). So Steve Jobs expects me to pay more just to get the GPS?? I dont think so. He should have atleast given us MMS or Video recording
- trixdawabbit, on 06/10/2008, -0/+5Assisted GPS is a good thing and is better than independent GPS, read the wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assisted_GPS
"it simply makes positioning faster and more accurate, but is not required."
- nroose, on 06/10/2008, -3/+21Did you watch the pres?
- posty, on 06/10/2008, -0/+8Yes it does, but it looks like with only a third party app.
http://www.ushow.com/
looks vapourware for now, but it looks like its done by the same guys who were hacking the iphone to begin with, if anyones seen that test app.
but I do like the ability to edit the compression settings and stuff. - ATLien74, on 06/10/2008, -2/+14yeah WTF? integrate iphone video recording with youtube and you've got a revolution. instant broadcasting. nobody could ever hide ***** again!
maybe that scares some people.
hmmm.- tinoproductions, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2There is an application that does that already, its called "VideoRecorder", available at your nearest installer.app centre. You can email the video or send it straight to YouTube. very nice!
- synyster, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1i bet it take years to send it via edge network
- alibanana, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1How exactly is that revolutionary? Other phones have offered that functionality for a very long time.
- ATLien74, on 06/24/2008, -0/+1Which phone records video and will let you upload to youtube directly from your phone?
- jabberwolf, on 06/10/2008, -2/+1It works with EXCHANGE via a 3rd party app OR iMAP
NOTHING has changed, and NO it does not work with exchange's native active sync.
Thus businesses will NOT open up the IMAP port as they did not want to before and DO NOT NOW!
WTF this is retarded - I'm being buried for stating FACTS!- r3zonance, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1It works with Exchange using ActiveSync, the ONLY officially supported way (ergo the only way enterprise will do so) and coincidentally, it's the ONLY way the Windows Mobile works with Exchange also.
- r3zonance, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1It works with Exchange using ActiveSync, the ONLY officially supported way (ergo the only way enterprise will do so) and coincidentally, it's the ONLY way the Windows Mobile works with Exchange also.

- tacotruck08, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1nope. i am bummed
- diggingaround, on 06/10/2008, -8/+4No... the device that record video is called a "Camcorder"... not telephone.
- linz, on 06/10/2008, -0/+7Thats right! And the device that plays music is called a "Walkman"...not telephone
- diggingaround, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1Actually it's called a "Portable Music Player".. ;)
"Walkman" was just one of many.. - diggingaround, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1Now seriously.. Almost 99% of smartphones out there makes very, very crappy looking video. I have digital camera.. it is designed to take pictures, and it can shoot video also.. but comparing the picture quality - video looks just horrible. Can you show me any great looking footage online, shoot with a cell phone (iPhone)? Anyone?
- diggingaround, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1Actually it's called a "Portable Music Player".. ;)
- ivantalboys, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2You mean like the N95 and N82 that record vga at 30fps?
- linz, on 06/10/2008, -0/+7Thats right! And the device that plays music is called a "Walkman"...not telephone
- SSUK, on 06/10/2008, -2/+7I'm not sure what Apple is thinking, really. It's a pretty basic feature, one that phones have had for YEARS now. What are they worried about? Can't be disk space, 8GB is plenty of room to write video files... Hell, phones with on-board 16mb can record video, ***** video, but video none-the-less.
Also, did they finally enable mass SMS/MMSing yet? (Didn't RTA, I'm in a rush.)- sadilak, on 06/10/2008, -0/+5Nope. It is still not available
- eyefork2, on 06/10/2008, -1/+5The iPhone has always had SMS (basic text messaging) but it still doesn't have MMS (multimedia messaging). How innovative!
- Mizzike, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1Yes; there are 3rd party apps out there that do this. VideoRecorder is one such program. There's another out there, but it doesn't do audio, so I uninstalled it.
- TSSaloic, on 06/09/2008, -4/+63Maybe with a 3rd party app.
- AshamedAmerican, on 06/09/2008, -8/+30I still wish it had some simple, cosmetic additions such as menu wallpaper or the ability to change icons. Without being jailbroken, that is.
- saleem, on 06/10/2008, -0/+14or cut copy paste
- B1663r, on 06/10/2008, -1/+10Or be able to send or receive pictures to and from other picture phones...
- saleem, on 06/10/2008, -0/+14or cut copy paste
- Ibox, on 06/09/2008, -4/+9is this price with contract???? anyone know yet? not that it matters I'm gunna get one anyway.
- Wailord, on 06/10/2008, -1/+11Yes, with a two year contract.
- McKoKslarge, on 06/10/2008, -1/+1330$ a month just for iphone ----not including voice plan; thats 10$ more that the iphone 1st gen;
- digitaldivinci, on 06/10/2008, -7/+4Where did you get that number? I'm not paying more per month just so I can read all of those emails no one sends me faster.
Another reason NOT to upgrade. - fugazied, on 06/10/2008, -3/+1The ONLY thing that makes me hesitate in getting an iphone is the fact that Optus in Australia has ludicrous 3g data charges. The bandwidth allowances are so low that any video usage would chew through it in a day.
- DMCer, on 06/10/2008, -0/+4Don't whine. The cheapest plan in the US is $59/month.
- digitaldivinci, on 06/10/2008, -7/+4Where did you get that number? I'm not paying more per month just so I can read all of those emails no one sends me faster.
- virtualball, on 06/10/2008, -1/+3What is it unsubsidized?
- christhechris, on 06/10/2008, -1/+2its not unsubsidized by the looks....either with carrier or not at all. This seems to be their next tactic against 'unauthorised' activations....
- MrMetal, on 06/09/2008, -9/+72I can't wait to rub it all over my skin...
Whatever, you all were thinking the same thing. Denial kills kittens.- megamod, on 06/10/2008, -1/+9put the iphone on the skin or else it gets the hose again =O

- funkdr, on 06/09/2008, -3/+38seems like a lot of the hoped features are missing??
- saleem, on 06/10/2008, -2/+24why cant i cut copy paste or mms yet? :o(
- HolyChimp, on 06/10/2008, -2/+14MMS is old news. The real question is 'why no video calling on a 3G phone?'
- nroose, on 06/10/2008, -3/+4I am guessing that Steve didn't like the user experience. If he can not provide great video, he will try to stop it. Plus, it would require an extra camera, which would make it bigger and more expensive. ***** video conferencing for a hit on size and cost was probably not worth it.
- locojones, on 06/10/2008, -1/+6Yeah those MMS are so old news that every other phone in the entire world for the last decade has had that feature.
- eyefork2, on 06/10/2008, -1/+2Almost everyone I know uses MMS instead of email for sending pictures phone to phone. Stop handing out these lame excuses for the iPhone lacking MMS and accept that it is strange for it to not have MMS yet.
- r3zonance, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2"Almost everyone I know uses MMS instead of email for sending pictures phone to phone. Stop handing out these lame excuses for the iPhone lacking MMS"
Other phones use MMS because their email experience is completely *****.
iPhone on the other hand has an awesome email experience.
I never cared for MMS, the ability to send a 176x128 video for 5 whole seconds never appealed and the picture limitations are tiny too. Hardly worth bothering for the amount they charge you.
- christhechris, on 06/10/2008, -4/+1email
- nebujal, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1this is software, and likely will be added in a later software revision on all models not just the 3g

- s4g4n, on 06/10/2008, -9/+83Pros: Its $199
Cons: It doesn't cook your dinner.- JasonPeck, on 06/10/2008, -4/+19Cons: 2 year contracts...grr
- s0ny, on 06/10/2008, -4/+12Find another sub 500$ phone that DOESNT include a 2 year contract.
- schotty, on 06/10/2008, -5/+5My Razr 2 was $449 and I did not take a contract.
- mateoberry, on 06/10/2008, -1/+6Yeah... but... it was a Razr.
- sadilak, on 06/10/2008, -1/+1While it is true that many other phones have a 2 year contract, you dont see Verizon or T Mobile selling Blackberrys without contract for a year and then suddenly changing their mind.
The 2 Year Contract plus the base package increase by $10 makes the 3G IPhone almost the same as the 2.5G phone
$299 + $240 + 2 year contract is not a good deal when compared to $499 + No Contract.
Knowing Apple and their antics, they are going to issue a hardware refresh next year and the cycle continues
- s0ny, on 06/10/2008, -4/+12Find another sub 500$ phone that DOESNT include a 2 year contract.
- wonderchemist, on 06/10/2008, -2/+9You can order pizza or other dinner for delivery from an iPhone.
- Wang, on 06/10/2008, -2/+33cons: no dock included anymore (+$29)
- rebotfc, on 06/10/2008, -3/+3Who actually used the dock?
- sadilak, on 06/10/2008, -1/+5Lots of people use the dock.
- Lewiji, on 06/10/2008, -0/+3I only use the dock for plugging speakers in as I don't have an adaptor - but that's no longer an issue.
- synyster, on 06/10/2008, -1/+3who doesn't use dock?
fixed! - Wang, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2I use the dock on a daily basis to sync and charge my iphone...most people do.
- rebotfc, on 06/10/2008, -3/+3Who actually used the dock?
- Zippo, on 06/10/2008, -1/+8No, but you can use Maps to find the nearest restaurant and use the GPS to make sure you don't get lost.
- acmethunder, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2If you want an iStove, get MacBook Pro, it keeps my coffee warm!
- yodasama, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1Well, what if you point two iPhones at each other while placing food between them, like you could with older cell phones?
BTW, Cons: Required data plan (can't I just use WiFi for free internet if I want to save some money?). Inability to store data outside of what iTunes allows without jail-breaking (and am I thinking correctly about some of what "jail-breaking" offers for the iPhone?). Anchoring the device to [crappy] software that only runs on two [crappy] OS's. And just generally over restricting how you can use your own hardware to the point that it isn't as useful as it really could or should be, especially to be any kind of true geek symbol--rather than a sign of being a tool.
- JasonPeck, on 06/10/2008, -4/+19Cons: 2 year contracts...grr
- philliesphan026, on 06/10/2008, -21/+7Buried as iPhone

- Wailord, on 06/10/2008, -11/+15The fact that no MMS or copy/paste was announced worries me...
Hell, who cares? It's the friggin' iPhone!- wonderchemist, on 06/10/2008, -11/+29Why do people still care about MMS? What does MMS get you that rich email with a photo attached doesn't?
- Twee, on 06/10/2008, -3/+14So you can send pictures to all of your friends with Moto Razrs. Honestly though, I've never used MMS and don't think I ever will.
- KMartSheriff, on 06/10/2008, -1/+9I know you were just making a point, but ***** the Razr.
- clockdist, on 06/10/2008, -6/+8I like MMS so I can easily save a photo someone MMS'ed to my iPhone without having to view it via safari!
- eyefork2, on 06/10/2008, -1/+8Not all of my friends have email, constantly check their email using their phone, or a phone that has full email support. MMS is an easy way to send them a picture, and even a lot of old phones have MMS, so I don't always have to worry about them having the most up-to-date phone. Sometimes you want to send a picture to their phone and not their email address. The fact that the iPhone doesn't have MMS still remains a mystery to me, as well as the way that people defend its lack of MMS. A lot of people use MMS all the time. Everyone I know uses MMS to quickly send pictures to eachother's phones, but there seems to be a minority on Digg that thinks that MMS is "out" and nobody uses it. That is a false belief, it is still a very popular service.
- Lewiji, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2Taking pictures of your penis to send to your friends while drunk is not a valid use of MMS.
- moleeyes, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1It's used more widely in Europe I read somewhere.

A $0.30 per message charge on your monthly bill.

- TomPlansMedia, on 06/10/2008, -5/+136ha, the $600 phone i bought 9 months ago is now worth less than $200
- LaPistola, on 06/10/2008, -4/+30Nope... Its worth the same or more... you won't be able to buy one to use on other networks now. They are requiring you activate at the store.. so anyone looking to use an iphone on another network will have to get one of a finite number of 1gen iphones.
- suppah, on 06/10/2008, -10/+12200$ is the new version; yours is old, lacking features and used. i think it'll be something about 100-150$
- Appleologist, on 06/10/2008, -3/+5But how much money have you saved or made with it in that time period?
- helliottlaw, on 06/10/2008, -4/+5Just sold mine on ebay for $350 in anticipation of this announcement...I'm curious to see if going iPhone-less for a month is worth the possibility that I might make more money now than a month from now when most people realize that they can get a better phone for less money...time will tell!
- roberto_deneero, on 06/10/2008, -8/+2Why don't you cry about it? Apple forced you to buy it didn't they? There was no possible way to wait until the 2G phone arrived at a lower price. Boo freakin hoo.

- Kinnkster, on 06/10/2008, -3/+4Discount as in 100% free, yes.

- DarkDx, on 06/10/2008, -4/+2What you have to do is sell it at ebay for 300-350 (depends of the condition) unlocked, etc. BEFORE the major sheeple/population knows about this new iphone :)
- cruzer2727, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2i sold mine on ebay yesterday for $275 before the conference. Win for me. There's a sucker born every second.
- nullcodes, on 06/10/2008, -27/+21iPhone is Fail, no sale (for me at least):
Reasons?
No WVGA or WSVGA display
No front facing secondary camera for video telephony
No cut & paste
No video recording
No improved camera
And the "price drop" to $199 is fake, considering the $10 increase for data plan (adds up to $240 over 2 years).
So to me, iPhone is fail versus HTC Diamond and Sony Xperia X1 which has all the above features (except HTC Diamond has VGA not WVGA).- nakile, on 06/10/2008, -10/+5Features aren't everything. Chris Pirillo will be one of the first people to tell you that.

- Twee, on 06/10/2008, -1/+7Where is the data plan pricing listed? I haven't been able to find it anywhere thus far.
- EvilJelloMan, on 06/10/2008, -2/+8Agreed. I have an original iphone, and i love it. But as far as upgrades go, this thing is totally underwhelming. I have been accused of being an apple fanboy, but I consider this update to be pretty ho-hum.
- ploke, on 06/10/2008, -2/+3You are 100% right, and that is a good thing. Original buyers don't feel burned (we all know how mad they can get), BUT apple can also pull, literally, around another 10 million buyers.
- jakem1, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1They have to sell the first million before they can do that.
- roberto_deneero, on 06/10/2008, -2/+1Well then it just sounds like it doesn't have any additional value for you. That doesn't mean it's a bad phone.
- ploke, on 06/10/2008, -2/+3You are 100% right, and that is a good thing. Original buyers don't feel burned (we all know how mad they can get), BUT apple can also pull, literally, around another 10 million buyers.
- roberto_deneero, on 06/10/2008, -4/+4Uh, Bob, it's a phone not a camera. Your list is full of features you'll find on a camera. How many phone numbers can your digital camera store? Oh none? What a piece of *****!!
- nullcodes, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1That's why I compared it to other phones that have comparable features.
A phone with an integrated camera is what I'm looking for (and many other folks too), so my comparison was biased from that standpoint. I don't wish to carry two devices. I don't like to carry my Nikon camera around -- it's bulky; but I occasionally have an unanticipated need for a camera -- so I want a cell phone that has a decent camera. Now if you don't like that, or can't understand that you probably have something wrong with you.
- nullcodes, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1That's why I compared it to other phones that have comparable features.
- aceonline, on 06/10/2008, -2/+3I'd argue that it's the software on the iphone that overcomes its lack of features vs. these other phones though
- nakile, on 06/10/2008, -10/+5Features aren't everything. Chris Pirillo will be one of the first people to tell you that.
- yvesoft, on 06/10/2008, -8/+10Best feature: It's coming to Brazil!
- tghd, on 06/10/2008, -1/+6YAY, that probably affects about 5% of the Brazilian population. YAY!
- Dhekke, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1Make that about 1%...
I'm at the 5% top and won't be buying one for at least a couple of years...
That thing is going to be SO expensive I'll have to sell some body parts - yvesoft, on 06/12/2008, -0/+0Well, even though most people cannot afford an iPhone, I believe it's going to sell well. There is absolutely no advertisement of Apple products here, but iPods are all around the place. Even Macs are getting popular now. I actually have some friends with hacked iPhones already, and they can be easily found on the web at not very bad prices. With the right campaign and operator's subsidies, it might be a hit.

Is it just me or does the $199 price seem to be slowly increasing :)
- suppah, on 06/10/2008, -6/+2wait for a C&D letter ;)
- Diggnabbit, on 06/10/2008, -3/+4I guess so. But who uses the dock anyway? Not me. (My main computer is a laptop and I have a case on my iPhone so it doesn't fit in the dock easily.) I just use the charging cord.
- Wang, on 06/10/2008, -0/+6I'd say you are in the minority - I think most people do use the dock to sync and charge their iphone on a daily basis.
- pensel, on 06/10/2008, -0/+6And I would say a lot of people used the free dock that came with the first run of 3rd generation iPod.

- Kinnkster, on 06/10/2008, -1/+5I know. It's getting rather annoying that people seem to think the iPhone is about features.
In fact its incredibly ***** stupid. If your looking for features only you shouldn't be looking at the iPhone in the first place, and thus you shouldn't be complaining.
- Kinnkster, on 06/10/2008, -1/+5I know. It's getting rather annoying that people seem to think the iPhone is about features.
- Megad00mer, on 06/10/2008, -5/+3I wonder how hard it's gonna be to get our hands on one come 7/11. Am I gonna have to take days off from work to camp out in front of an apple store?

- KeepOffMyLawn, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1It's also my birthday! Free Slurpee + an iPhone = Win.
- UMDWei, on 06/10/2008, -0/+19Now that I think about it, I'm not sure why I'm paying $20 for a data plan on the original iphone. Most of my real data usage is on wifi anyway.
I don't mind paying $30 for data on 3G, but we really should petition for unlimited texting to be included in the $30 plan.- thecheat1, on 06/10/2008, -1/+10/agree I have always thought the unlimited data should include texting.
Lets get it started and have MrBabyMan post it on Digg. - AndrewWiggin, on 06/10/2008, -1/+5Does GPS require a data plan?
/legit question- diggmaddy, on 06/10/2008, -0/+4Short answer, Yes if you want to use Google Maps.
Long answer. GPS feature by itself would not require a data plan, but since Google Maps on the iPhone streams map data (not just traffic, even maps as well) from the google servers, it would require a data plan, because you can't always be connected to a wifi connection while on the road.- AndrewWiggin, on 06/10/2008, -2/+1Thank you! I assume EGDE would be fine as a data plan right?
- subliminalurge, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1EDGE should be fine. I used GPS with Google Maps over EDGE on my old Blackjack II and found it perfectly satisfactory.
- diggmaddy, on 06/10/2008, -0/+4Short answer, Yes if you want to use Google Maps.
- thecheat1, on 06/10/2008, -1/+10/agree I have always thought the unlimited data should include texting.
- EvilJelloMan, on 06/10/2008, -2/+19My biggest question is - GPS directions?? If it doesn't do turn by turn, with voice, it's not worth the upgrade to me. Sure, the phone is 199 now, but it's an extra ten bucks a month for the data plan, so an extra 240 dollars spent over the length of your contract. Not so cheap anymore is it?
- stasis88, on 06/10/2008, -7/+0Try reading the article................................
- EvilJelloMan, on 06/10/2008, -0/+4Yeah, because the comments in the article are always sooooo accurate. I wasn't asking digg for their opinion on the thing, I want to see a hands-on experience with the gps.
- PocketWatch, on 06/10/2008, -2/+2There's bound to be a turn by turn direction 3rd party app, maybe even with voice (though I doubt that). I agree with your anger over the price drop, only to raise maintenance prices subtlety for a subsidy.
- EvilJelloMan, on 06/10/2008, -2/+1The price drop thing is even worse for people who bought the original iphone. Now it makes it harder to sell our old phones, since the new one "seems" so cheap to morons who don't understand the hidden cost of the two year contract.
- jbella, on 06/10/2008, -1/+3TechCrunch was reporting that a spokesman for TomTom said that their nav app was already running on the iPhone. You'd have to buy it as a 3rd party app, but it might be worth it
- Ch0mpr, on 06/10/2008, -6/+4if you can't afford $240 over 2 years then
a) get a better job
or
b) get a better job - nebujal, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1if you read the article it says it does turn by turn, no word on voice tho

- ATLien74, on 06/10/2008, -3/+1developers! Developers! DEVELOPERS! Pfffftttt! (shart!)
- jakem1, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1Considering that most people think that the new iPhone is less than a must have upgrade and there's a lot of excitement about the HTC Diamond and the Sony Experia I'd say that Windows Mobile will be around for a while longer yet.
- lead2thehead, on 06/10/2008, -3/+50Still no MMS? With that much processing power, you'd think it could send a text message with an f*cking picture attached. ARGH!
- superkendall, on 06/10/2008, -22/+1Here in the year 2008, we send pictures by email and not some antique protocol. With push email, you get the emails just as quick as an MMS...
- waydee, on 06/10/2008, -1/+14Not everybody has data plans enabled or wants to use sometimes expensive data just to download a picture - MMS messages are often included in free message bundles or are quite cheap to send/receive. It's an odd thing to leave out.
- eyefork2, on 06/10/2008, -0/+6I never use email to send pictures from my phone, "here in the year 2008". If I'm sending a picture phone to phone I always use MMS, it's guaranteed to get the job done and I don't have to worry about my friends bothering to check their email on their phones, if their phones even support it. I still don't understand how a product as hyped as the iPhone can not have that feature.
- lead2thehead, on 06/11/2008, -0/+0Antique protocol? You are aware that email is sent using SMTP, right?... and that SMTP has been around since the 1970s? And that when you attach a picture to an email, it has to be converted to base-64 encoded text because SMTP can only handle ASCII characters? It doesn't get any more antique than that.
- beerbarron, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1No I agree with him, whilst MMS is good, its not essential...besides there will be a million MMS app's coming for the iPhone. I'd rather be able to do live blogging or send photos directly to my flickr. For me that is more important, besides most mobile screens are tiny and crap, viewing pics on them is horrible..
- waydee, on 06/10/2008, -1/+14Not everybody has data plans enabled or wants to use sometimes expensive data just to download a picture - MMS messages are often included in free message bundles or are quite cheap to send/receive. It's an odd thing to leave out.

- Ironman11, on 06/10/2008, -1/+11I'm really hoping that AT&T will allow you to get an unlimited EDGE data plan (no 3G) for $20 for those of us who don't live in a 3G area.
- MalDON, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1I'm hoping they don't raise the price of the old data plan. That will seriously piss me off, mainly because I won't have 3g and I'm not convinced to upgrade my iphone.
- ZeroSki11, on 06/10/2008, -1/+21"We did a quick data test -- at our location we went from 104Kbps on the EDGE iPhone to 215Kbps on the 3G model. 2x ain't bad, yo."
215kbps?!?!? Is this typical of 3G on AT&T's network? I just got 738kbps on my EVDO phone.- promethean, on 06/10/2008, -6/+6You have to remember it was in the middle of an glass and metal building.

- serpentor, on 06/10/2008, -1/+14Agreed! 215kbps is abysmally piss poor for "3G", what a letdown..
- slaypiece, on 06/10/2008, -3/+1I get 700+kbps on my Blackjack in the LA metro area on ATT's 3G network, so I'd imagine that this could have been due to the local cell(s) being overloaded from all the conference traffic...?
- CLShortFuse, on 06/10/2008, -1/+11I get 1500kbps (the cap AT&T sets) from my AT&T Tilt. Don't flaunt your 1/2 speed EVDO CDMA phone at me.

- senatorpjt, on 06/10/2008, -8/+6Wow, they fixed the old headphone port that doesn't work with regular headphones. Sure, you can buy an "adapter", which is basically a two inch extension cord, but that's stupid when they could have just made it fit a normal headphone.
Also, it says it's twice as fast - and it's unbearably ***** slow now, twice as fast as unbearably slow is still unbearably slow. If I'm out with people and I need to look something up, I usually load up Wikipedia off the bookmarks, set the phone aside, then check it a couple minutes later, type in the search, then let it sit a couple minutes. Being twice as fast as that isn't going to change anything. I'd rather have the extra $10/month.- parksgm, on 06/10/2008, -3/+0Hmm...then something is horribly wrong with the coverage in your area. As awesome as push email sans exchange is, I feel like most users just wanna take the best photos that the stock 2MP cam can take, and that 'requires' a flash and a mirror- superkendall, on 06/10/2008, -12/+4Hi there, phone user here, wants a phone. If you want a camera, buy a CAMERA.
- waydee, on 06/10/2008, -0/+9If the iPhone cant even match the capabilities of practically every other 3g handset on the market these days (that is by including a real camera and flash) - like Sony Ericsson and Nokia offerings then what hope does it have? Why not include it?

- daines88, on 06/10/2008, -2/+30Why the ***** must Apple insist on taking more and more accessories out of each product refresh?!?! This time it's the dock... next time it will be the power adapter, mark my words.
//rant- robdazomba, on 06/10/2008, -1/+7Next time it'll be the phone.
- Breezy6, on 06/10/2008, -5/+0wooooo they are just getting cheaper and better!!
- teknikk7, on 06/10/2008, -2/+3you poor bastard don't deserve an iPhone.
- EwMo, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1That's what HE said.
- AndrewWiggin, on 06/10/2008, -3/+3Anyone know if GPS is available without a data plan?
Please no flames.- nroose, on 06/10/2008, -0/+5No point really. It is not like it has the feature of telling you your lat and lon coordinates. The only reason to have the GPS is to show where you are on a map, which requires data.
- cr4wl3r, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1To buy iPhone 3G @ 199 you have to buy a data plan contract that ATT says qualifies. So in short; Yes.
- NeutrixX, on 06/10/2008, -5/+0Thank you Apple! Waiting for July 15th release for Canada!

- teknikk7, on 06/10/2008, -11/+6This is so ***** lame of Apple. Instead of Apple marketing themselves as having niche high end products, they dump this POS $200 phone on the market. They are ignoring all the people who paid $500-$600 making the first phone a success. Instead of rewarding us by bringing the features we want, 32GB-64GB, Video Conferencing, MMS, Copy/Paste etc... Instead of making an extraordinary phone even more extraordinary, they give us more of the same. They had the opportunity to once again leap frog the competition by bring higher capacity's and video conferencing, what they have done is put us into the same category as the low end masses touting there Razors and Envy's. I hope Apple stock takes a big *****. Now every one and there mom is going to have one........Boring. Thats like Apple taking there high end computers and selling them for $499 like Dell, it just wouldn't be the same.
- homeslice57, on 06/10/2008, -3/+5So you're mad because Apple improved the iPhone and lowered the price?
Something about that doesn't make sense.- teknikk7, on 06/10/2008, -0/+7Improved? Because they gave us features that have been out for over a year on most other phones?
What about the features that we have been asking for?
2MP camera? Nokia has had 5MP for the last 2 years!
Cut and Paste? Cmon
MMS??
Hopefulls that would have set the iPhone apart from the rest of the industry:
Front camera.
Video.
Flash support for safari.- jbella, on 06/10/2008, -1/+42MP camera...
Sure it would be nice to have a 5MP camera.. but you really need a bigger and more expensive lens to properly support a 5MP sensor. If you put in a 5MP sensor with the same lens that iPhone has, it would have even worse low-light performance. Look at the nokia n95.. it has a nice 5MP camera, but it's HUGE. This is a trade off that Apple has decided to make. I think it's a pretty reasonable one to make since I really don't need my phone to replace my nice digital camera.
Cut and Paste
Yes. this is needed, and there is no excuse for Apple to have put this one off for so long. Having said that.. I'm certain it's in the works.. and it's a software upgrade.
MMS
Really? MMS? You can't be serious.
Front Camera
Sure I suppose that would have been nice.
Video
My guess is this is another software thing. There is no reason why the camera on the phone can't do video. A 3rd party app may even be able to provide this. - MrStu, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2Front Camera? People use those? I've owned 3 3g handsets, all with front cameras, and the most I've done is look at it and say "oh look, a camera on the front". Apart from that it's useless.
- jbella, on 06/10/2008, -1/+42MP camera...
- jbella, on 06/10/2008, -1/+1He's mad because Apple didn't implement the features that HE cares about the most. Of course it's true that no matter what Apple releases there will be people to complain about it. It's always fun to see what "obvious" feature Apple is guilty of ignoring. I even saw one post that faulted apple for not including a programmable IR port so that they can replace their remote controls. I am not kidding.
Unfortunately, you can't do anything about feature counters. There will always be people who don't really care how well features are implemented, they just want them all.- BerenTW, on 06/10/2008, -0/+3sorry to burst your bubble teknikk7 but i have had video conferencing on my mobile for coming on 3 years now. It wouldn't set apple appart. Its in the catchup basket along with all the other missing features.
- teknikk7, on 06/10/2008, -0/+7Improved? Because they gave us features that have been out for over a year on most other phones?
- smpx, on 06/10/2008, -0/+3So you're mad because you're not special anymore?
That actually makes perfect sense.
*fixed - Anditsonfire, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1You need to start thinking of the iPhone as a phone/mp3 player/web browser/gps device, and less as a signaling device for how cool you are...
- homeslice57, on 06/10/2008, -3/+5So you're mad because Apple improved the iPhone and lowered the price?
- kaiquan, on 06/10/2008, -5/+0when is it coming to singapore?!! it's a bit on the big size for handphones though as compared to other models by other companies. but who cares?! a 3.5 inch screen.. man tt's gonna be stunning! That's why apple rocks!
- locojones, on 06/10/2008, -0/+4Why is someone in Singapore excited about this backwaters phone? You guys in SE Asia have phones that do 4-way video conferencing while watching live satellite television. Why would you want a phone that can't even do MMS?
- kaiquan, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1hmm technology that exists but doesn't work at all cause there's no market for such services here. MMS has been around for years but usage is really low here, if ur not aware. video conferencing while watching live satellite television?? i think ur living in the future dude. mobile television is still in its infancy the latest handsets that first support that kind of service has been out for only weeks. perhaps ur thinking of japan, but even then, the number of working services and applications out of the total on their phones is really puny still. so why can't i be excited about the iphone?

- Qtip42, on 06/10/2008, -0/+6I dunno, this seems like a step backwards for Apple. Especially the way they're dealing with AT&T and letting people purchase it. Seems like they're doing the best to eliminate the gray market. Good luck with that....heh.
- znicket, on 06/10/2008, -2/+3200 usd and now global. That is going to sell a *****.
- Baycal, on 06/10/2008, -2/+1Does anyone know what happens if you are still in the middle of a contract with another phone? (Not an iphone)
Does AT&T just reset your 2 years? or does it just add on? or what?- bsonline, on 06/10/2008, -2/+1The current rumor is that ANYONE can purchase one as long as they are willing to sign a new 2 year. So, basically, yes... they just reset your 2 year agreement. Hopefully they will do it again next year when the 3rd gen iPhone comes out.
- HumanRecall, on 06/10/2008, -7/+2BUT is it COMING TO CANADA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And if so to WHOM ? ROGERS ! ALLIENT ? BELL CANADA ! TELUS ?
WHAT FEATURES CAN I USE ?
FUUCcckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk!- jmreid, on 06/10/2008, -1/+1Woah. Calm down. Why not look at the Canadian site?
http://www.apple.ca - smpx, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1Fido and Rogers.
Rogers has 3G. Chances are the prices will be around 299 give or take a 2 year contract (I know apple says the prices will be worldwide, but most apple products take a 30% raise when brought up North due to taxes and greedy ***** corporations.)
- jmreid, on 06/10/2008, -1/+1Woah. Calm down. Why not look at the Canadian site?
- itchyknee, on 06/10/2008, -5/+0Will it run Quicktime?
- jmreid, on 06/10/2008, -0/+3You mean, will it play video files?
The answer is yes.
- jmreid, on 06/10/2008, -0/+3You mean, will it play video files?
- teamlouish, on 06/10/2008, -1/+2I hope this sets even higher standards for other phone manufacturers. They set the bar pretty high with the previous model, then on this one completely dropping the price. Im glad to see other manufacturers trying to make similar devices (touch, full web browsing, etc)... but you have to admit, Apple takes the cake on its interface. I've never seen a device (any device, not just phone) that has such a smooth, slick interface. Even all the GPS devices out there.. its like they forgot to higher a designer to help make the interface good looking. every screen on the iPhone is beautiful. I thought it was funny when I saw that screen shot of Tom Tom's software running on the iPhone, (though it certainly could of been a super imposed image), anyone notice how out of every application for the iPhone, that the "pros" in the GPS market make the ugliest software. All these other phones Ive seen come out trying to compete with the iphone, the interface/gui suck. Ive seen similar touch devices demo'd (by someone from their own company) who seem to have to try to touch the screen multiple times before it responds, try to swipe the screen to go the next screen, but they have to swipe it like 3 times before it responds, like they have to push really hard to get it to work.... or when they scroll down a list of names like in their contacts, how it doesn't smoothly come to a stop like the iphone. Everything about the iphone is just so slick and perfect (im not referring to what its missing, i.e. copy and paste, im referring to what it does do). I really hope now that its at $200 people who dont appreciate how amazing the device is, will buy one and see the light. Good GPS devices cost a few hundred. Good video players cost hundreds, there isnt a device out there that can do full web browsing unless you buy an eee pc, another couple hundred. The iPhone has so many things it does so perfectly, and now for only $200, I just dont see why anyone wouldn't buy one (aside from it being on att). I felt the world would be a better place if everyone had an iphone, at that was at the $599 price.
- tremmel33, on 06/10/2008, -1/+0I have to totally agree! Sure the phone doesn't have EVERYTHING, but it is still a great phone. Especially for the iPhone being their first one (phone) in production. When they released this phone we saw a huge scramble by other companies to create their touchscreen phone. This phone is truly a great product and I think they will continue to update it and make it even better.
