iPod Shuffle now "world's smallest MP3 player"
engadget.com — Apple has finally upgraded the extremely popular shuffle.

- BadassCheese, on 10/12/2007, -61/+17I thought the shuffle was regarded as a flop? Or am I mistaken.
- atdigg, on 10/12/2007, -49/+9it probably was, but this one is really nice.
- jimmys, on 10/12/2007, -8/+54ummm... Apple sold 10 million
- SoCalDissident, on 10/12/2007, -9/+31It looks ok, but I've got a pair of headphones w/ a built-in mp3 player; I think they'd count as smaller. Or the oakley mp3 sunglasses (which were a flop). Or the mobiblu. For $80, there are smaller and/or better mp3 players out there IMHO
- rm999, on 10/12/2007, -12/+29http://mi.oakley.com/site/media/cache/42a714b6c01b4.png_0_0_0.jpg
This thing was a failure? noooo... - josho, on 10/12/2007, -6/+26No, the iPod shuffle captured over 58% of the flash-based MP3 player market pretty shortly after launch -- not exactly a failure.
- Fett101, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17I'm sorry that people can't tell sarcasm when they see it, rm999
- fyre2012, on 10/12/2007, -10/+21Ok, I love Apple. I really do. I have a macbook pro, I admin a small network of Apple workstations, (along side a gentoo datacenter), it works, it's bug free and I never have any problems with them.
That being said, for the love of The Internet, can we see something OTHER than apple on the front page? There needs to be a way to customize your own front page to remove or give preferance to certain topics. This is getting out of hand. The past 2 weeks, the front page has been consistantly 50% Apple stories. I love the hype, but there has GOT to be something ELSE happening on The Internet besides what Steve Jobs had for brekfast, or how snazzy this iPod looks.
./rant. - ggko, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13"Or the mobiblu" [is smaller]
Which mobiblu are you talking about? Surely not the cube? The spec page on the new Shuffle measures it at 1.07"x1.62"x0.41", or 0.71 cubic inches, and that's including the air between the clip and player.
My Mobiblu Cube now feels bloated. - threepio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I bought a shuffle for my father - he's a complete luddite.
He's using an MP3 player now. I'll be picking up one of these just for the hell of it. For $80 I can't really pass it up. - Abatrour, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6@ggko
Atleast you can see what song your listening too :P
The Apple website says the shuffle can store on average 240 songs. Imagine having to listen to every song for 10 seconds just to find out if thats the song you want to listen to.
Dont get me wrong, I dont hate Apple, I mainly love Itunes because if helps bands get their music out there without screwing them over like the labels do. - Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6I have an oldschool shuffle, and I really like my shuffle.
... I also got it for free. Maybe that's why I like it. The person who gave it to me was going to throw it out after buying a video ipod, but then realized I would use it. It's a really nice device, and I didn't have to blow any cash. I dig that. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"There needs to be a way to customize your own front page to remove or give preferance to certain topics. This is getting out of hand."
I agree completely, but, there already is a way to customize your front page.

Thats about as negative as you can come when complaining about too much hype (without being dugg down), among the mac loving digg community. - Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Wow, looks like you could accidentally inhale the thing...
- aristotle0dude, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2"Atleast you can see what song your listening too"
Why do you need to "see" the song that you are listening to? Can't you tell what it is by listening to it?
I have a regular iPod video but I also have a shuffle and I can see the appeal of them for people to go jogging with. If you are jogging, you are not going to be looking at the screen even if there was one. - Mike89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2aristotle0dude:
It's helpful if you're discovering new music and listening to lots of discographies.. forcedly on shuffle, if you have the shuffle, I guess. It's nice to know the name of the new song you're hearing for the first time - mrsticks1982, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2yuVYBgMu0
old, but funny!
- mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -31/+24Am I mistaken or was it the mobiblu that was the worlds smallest MP3 player. And they now have 1 and 2 gig models.
http://www.i4u.com/article2801.html
Furthermore Ipods don't count as MP3 players, they are DRM hoes.- raz3000, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11The old shuffle looked so awful, though I am not impressed by this new design either. I wish they'd just dumo it and provide a 1GB Nano at that price.
- isage, on 10/12/2007, -17/+5Yes, mc7winkie, you are correct. See my digg for a comparison: http://digg.com/gadgets/2nd_Gen_iPod_Shuffle_vs_mobiBLU_Cube_mobiBlue_still_smallest_MP3_player
- Oakes, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18@raz3000
Why do people keep saying this? The shuffle doesn't need a screen - it ***** shuffles your songs. You may not like the concept, but apparently 10 million people do. - nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5@ isage
Thanks for linking to a page on digg that clearly isn't getting to the front page so that you can get some attention.
Wouldn't it be horrible if you just linked to the website with the article? Yes. That would be too awful for us. - Oakes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15BTW, the MobiBlu is 24mm^3. The shuffle is 12.25mm^3. It is literally half the size.
- ImTheDarkcyde, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13"Furthermore Ipods don't count as MP3 players"
they play mp3s, that kind of makes them an 'mp3 player', drm or not. - aer0sense, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Thats what I thought about the "cube mp3 player" being the smallest. But I guess either this is smaller or that Apple havent done their marketing research.
In reference to: http://www.i4u.com/article2801.html - jkronz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Ahh, the shuffle *is* smaller by volume. Thus making it the smallest MP3 player.
- emorphien, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7the mobublu cube is the smallest completely capable mp3 player with a screen, and FM tuner and so on and so forth... pretty impressive gadget. I'd buy one over the shuffle.
- KayinNasaki, on 10/12/2007, -13/+7@Oakes
Or perhaps 10,000,000 people didn't know any better. Well, less then that. Theres always the mindless Apple worshippers. - ggko, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9"I'd buy one [mobiblu cube] over the shuffle."
I have a cube, the tuner has trouble picking up some stations I try to tune into (nevermind that I don't care much for the FM station offerings around here.) The firmware goes corrupt after a couple weeks of regular use.
Yes, there is software to reset it, but for Windows only (despite their Mac compatibility claim.) And the latest version of the firmware update has bad a host of problems by some accounts. For myself, it can't even locate to Cube to update it. So until I find an older version of the update software I have a $90 paperweight (hell, I doubt it's heavy enough to even be a paperweight.)
Still want to buy one?
Look up any forum discussing the Cube, for all the iPod/Apple-sucks-horror-stories, you'll find the same for the Cube. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4you don't realize how small it really is until steve jobs takes it out and clips it onto his pants pocket. when he did that at the keynote it looked incredibly tiny.
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4new shuffle is 1/10th of a inch smaller than the mobiblu DAH-1500(comparing volume)...
but the mobiblu also has a oled display, SRS WOW, FM Radio Receiver and Recorder, and a voice recorder
i bet if they had a version without oled display, it would be smaller than new shuffle - skywake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Am I the only person who thinks that smaller != better?
sure its smaller. but it gets to the point where youve gone to far.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRt3Yaups1c
who cares about the size. We have been able to get the things fitting in our pocket for ages... what more do you want? (*cuddles Creative MuVo*... its ok.. the big Apple isnt going to make me buy something else) see what you have done! my MuVo is crying.... shame on you Apple... shame... - mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"Furthermore Ipods don't count as MP3 players, they are DRM hoes."
But... they... still... play... MP3's...
- Atlantics, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3I don't know about calling the Shuffle extremely popular.
- UnseenLlama, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22When you sell 10 million of anything, I think you can say it's at least somewhat popular.
- ggko, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Maybe it was just a million people who bought a Shuffle, ran into a serious problem, shook their first, "damn you Apple! I'll give you one more chance and that's it!" and bought another shuffle ... nine times.
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you have a problem with your iPod, which is far from rare, Apple is excellent about replacing it.
- spyres, on 10/12/2007, -13/+6Looks like it still has non user replaceable battery. Not interested.
- defjuan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7its 80 bux, are you going to by extra batteries for an 80 dollar gadget.
- Craig1394, on 10/12/2007, -14/+4How is that thing smaller than the MobiBlu 1500i? And Apple still has no screen on the Shuffle.
- Oakes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11See both my comments above. It doesn't need a screen if it shuffle your damn songs - I honestly don't get what you people are thinking. As for MobiBlu, the shuffle is less than 13mm^3, which is almost exactly half the volume of the MobiBlu.
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4i don't know about most people, but it's just too small for me. the capacity is nice and all, but the thing is so small that it's hard to keep up with.
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7heck the nano's too small for me. And why is the headphone plug on the bottom for the nano? Seems............ stupid (can't think of any other description).
- DerekHall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Maybe you should go back to carrying a boom box on your shoulder then, coolio.
- crash331, on 10/12/2007, -20/+4flagged as inaccurate. Maybe if this was just a story about the new shuffle, I MIGHT digg it.
- rockintom99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10...It *is* a story about the new shuffle.
- followme, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16small but not as small as the ipod flea! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRt3Yaups1c haha
- INHUMANITY, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I instantly thought of that skit when I saw the picture. I knew ***** from that from skit was going to come true. It's happening! :)
- ckpcw, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I'm still using the iPod pequano.. living in the past I know..
- justinmt7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1hilarious!!
- jotux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18First choking death related to the ipod expected sometime next year.
- magicRob, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9The 2nd gen Shuffle is smaller in total volume...
MobiBlu = 24mm x 24mm x 24mm = 13,824 cubic mm
Shuffle = 41.2 x 27.3 x 10.5 mm = 11,809 cubic mm
Specs are gathered from here:
- http://www.mobibluamerica.com/dah1500.html- emorphien, on 10/12/2007, -16/+8yeah, it's smaller... still just as useless as it was before though!
The MobiBlu wins for features and at 2gb, capacity too.
- emorphien, on 10/12/2007, -16/+8yeah, it's smaller... still just as useless as it was before though!
- MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Apple is going in the wrong direction. I mean, hell, You know how easy it would be to jack that from someone!
I guess the iPod flea came true.- Qoogirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just as easy as it is to steal, it's easy to hide inside your clothes with that clip. Heck, people won't even know you HAVE one because you can keep it under your clothes.
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1I gots emo in ma pocket, and now i'm gonna rock it.
- IotaOrionis, on 10/12/2007, -21/+4I like how anyone ever saying anything negative whatsoever as it pertains to Mac or Linux gets voted down into the floor. Nice goingyou piece-of-***** fanboys.
- drunkjack, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Hell, I'm BLOCKING the haters. I love it. I do the same on the political threads to the Conspiracy Monkies.
Welcome to the killfile! - TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4No i think people are modding down people like you....theres a huge difference jackass
- IotaOrionis, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1No, they are modding down everyone you ***** moron. Chech the first poster as an example, hell check anyone who comments in a thread and doesn't say how much he wants to be ***** in the ass by the newest and more glorious invention from Apple. You'll see the same thing, *****.
- drunkjack, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Hell, I'm BLOCKING the haters. I love it. I do the same on the political threads to the Conspiracy Monkies.
- waffle_iron, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Random idea for a website:
Instead of those silly ones where people donate money so someone will film them destroying a new electronic device, I say we pay someone to swallow an iPod Shuffle. Wrap it in a condom if they want to be able to use it afterward.- dacheetah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4With a slightly modified headphone (Short cord, possibly glued into the iPod so it won't come unplugged), while on, at full volume. It would be creepy being able to hear the thing as it passes through, the intestines, etc...
I know that I sure as hell wouldn't do it, but I'd be willing to watch someone else do it. :)
- dacheetah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4With a slightly modified headphone (Short cord, possibly glued into the iPod so it won't come unplugged), while on, at full volume. It would be creepy being able to hear the thing as it passes through, the intestines, etc...
- Craig1394, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Additionally, The MobiBlu CAN shuffle my songs too, if I set it to do so. I don't really have anything negative to say about any of the iPods, but the MobiBlu Dah-1500i's screen and cube shape had a stronger appeal to my gadget-freak side than the iPod shuffle. I may get a video iPod eventually, but for now, the Dah-1500i is all I need, and it looks cool and sounds pretty damned good too!
- ggko, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1The Cube will shuffle only a subset of your songs for little while and then go sequential. Try it sometime.
(Did this on firmware versions 100.100.100 and 100.100.105. I don't know about the latest version since the updater can't even locate my Cube.)
- ggko, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1The Cube will shuffle only a subset of your songs for little while and then go sequential. Try it sometime.
- ceralor, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3The cube thing is smaller.
- ggko, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Read the comments above, the size thing has been disproven several times over.
- eoosoxxx, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1顶
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6the new shuffle is 1/10th of a inch smaller than the mobiblu DAH-1500(comparing volume)...
but the mobiblu also has a oled display, SRS WOW, FM Radio Receiver and Recorder, and a voice recorder
shuffle maybe the smallest... not by much... but mobiblu is the best small mp3 player - robbiedo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1My MP3 player is better than yours, and smaller. So, Nyah!
- IcerC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Smalliest mp3 player with no screen*
- valentinom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Volume is what counts when comparing devices and also major feature sets. The iPod shuffle has no display. So comparing it to the Mobiblu DAH-1500 is not reasonable:
http://www.i4u.com/article6549.html - azzageddi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've just joined a gym, and my mobile phone mp3 player is turning out to be way too big for comfortable use, so I'm looking at smaller players. The lack of a display is not a big deal to me, but I'd like the ability to delete a song while it's playing--I download a lot of free songs by new artists at random, and it's good to be able to dump them right away if they turn out not to be good, rather than waiting for the next time I connect it to my PC and trying to remember which song I didn't like.
I like my wife's Sharp MP-B200 ( http://www.i4u.com/article5739.html )--half a gig of internal memory plus a miniSD slot. Won't be long before SD cards are available with more memory than a hard-drive iPod, so this sucker won't go obsolete so quickly. - jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3liars... its not the smallest MP3 player
- royaltea, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2how cute.
- cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Apple seems to be at that point when there's only "so much" leyway they have without frightening the crap out of people. Putting an AM/FM tuner into the iPod by default means they won't have people coming to the iTunes store as often. Same thing with the DVR question. People just need to keep pounding. Apple will see the potential hardware sales and decide its better to anger a few people than to continue sitting on its hands.
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I have an iPod so I don't HAVE to listen to the radio. Fuzzy-quality ad-filled playback of songs I don't necessarily like, interrupted by annoying DJ slapstick routines? No thank you.
Radio tuner in an iPod = don't want it, don't need it.
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I have an iPod so I don't HAVE to listen to the radio. Fuzzy-quality ad-filled playback of songs I don't necessarily like, interrupted by annoying DJ slapstick routines? No thank you.
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Why is a lack of a FM tuner such a big deal? When I bought an iPod, I happily gave up the incessant noise that is FM radio with all the stations basically owned by two or three conglomerates and all playing the same Brittany SimSpears garbage.
I use the iPod mostly on my commute to work in my car and other than MAYBE listening to the local news for traffic (or NFL games if I happen to be in the car on the weekends) I have no use for a FM tuner. - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Warning: Contains Small Par-- Everything - Choking Hazard for Children Under 3.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's too fricken small!!
That thing would be WAY too easy to lose...unless Apple is counting on that!!!! /tinfoil hat - Quickbreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This immediately made me think of the omniawesome iPod invisa:
http://files.filefront.com/SteveJobsSNLmov/;5264706;;/fileinfo.html - HisTumness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No USB interface? Man, I was just about ready to buy this, too...
- hungryJonJon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I absolutely hate the new shuffle. I bought my 1st gen 1 gig shuffle when it was announced and have loved it. Now there's a friggin DOCK ??? What a piece of garbage. Built in USB is really really handy.
- justinjus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Uh, did you watch the apple presentation? If I remember correctly, the 2nd gen shuffle has its own docking station that has a usb interface.
http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/sep_2006/event/index.html - hungryJonJon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@justinjus: like you said, a DOCK with USB. The 1st gen shuffle has a BUILT IN USB port, you don't have to carry around a stupid dock. It lets you use it as a flash drive to copy files anytime you have your shuffle. 2nd gen shuffle makes that useless.
- feelinit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I really think small is beautiful. Sizeasy have put up a comparison with a box of matches and a credit card at http://www.sizeasy.com/page/featured to get a really accurate idea of exactly how small this thing is.
- dandyhighwayman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not everyone is pleased:
http://www.marilyncarolyn.com/2006/09/local-paperboy-latest-victim-of-apples_13.html - cprimous, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1No standard built-in usb port is lame.
Now, you have to carry around a sync cable or dock.
Previous shuffle was way more practical and small enough. IMHO.- olivierk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Shuffle is an iPod (ie: Music player), it's not a USB Memory stick. The first generation allowed you to do both but the memory stick part was just a bonus.
The smaller the shuffle the better. Most people who use a Shuffle most likely use it in the Gym and while running. In this case, you are not constantly skipping or interacting with it (or you better start concentrating on your workout :-).
Love it. I secretly hope my 512 Shuffle gets caught between 2 15lb weights so I have an excuse to buy the new one.
- olivierk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Shuffle is an iPod (ie: Music player), it's not a USB Memory stick. The first generation allowed you to do both but the memory stick part was just a bonus.
- coopetition, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Looks awesome!
Apple kicks ass! - withears, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I have the original shuffle which I got for free for signing up for a Charles Schwab credit card.
First thing I did was buy a Griffin Tune cap (http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/tunecaps/) so I could put it on the back of my shirt collar and hide my earbud cord in my shirt. Works great. With the built-in clip, I really like this new Shuffle design. I didn't think I'd buy another Shuffle but I'm now re-thinking this. (Give my old one to my daughter)
People are funny with the lack of screen though. You put 240 songs you like on there and let it go. It's like the worlds greatest radio station. - ronhawker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Love it for size and clip. I use my shuffle mostly on my motorcycle for listening to tunes while I ride both commuting and on longer rides. Works great! This is even better because it is smaller AND has a built-in clip that I can attach it to my tank bag. I have several mix loads for my shuffle that I load through my laptop in a few minutes. Change every few days or so. No, I don't need to know what is playing as I LOADED IT! Even the 512 shuffle had plenty of songs for most rides.
I also have a bluetooth player with removable sd but still find the plugged in shuffle better so far.- joe18, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Dude! You ride you bike while listening to music? How reckless of you...
- smartmlp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I like how everyone just has to have a screen, like its some kind of life or death issue. The reason why a lot of things are not smaller then that are is because of the screen! No doubt, if this had a screen it would be twice its size, and even then you wouldn’t be able to make out what the text is. The great part about all this is a low-cost small ipod that /actually/ works *gasp* great without a screen, I mean it shuffles your songs!
- JCGV, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I actually use my 20 GB mp3-player (no Apple) without looking on the screen. 15 GB of songs and random play-all, works perfect for me. If I don't like the songs he picked just press next.
- PopeRatzo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Question: How'm I supposed to find the song I want? You mean I have to just scan through a couple of hundred tunes to find what I'm looking for? For 80 bucks, they could have put a little display on this thing. SanDisk managed to do it.
- Greattastic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1It's got the word "shuffle" in the title. You turn it on and it gives you a random song. Try enjoying your music collection rather than one song. Dumbass.
