ipodhacking.com — From the same developers that brought you the iPod Classic to iPod Video hack, comes it's successor. It's been in development for well over 1 month, and is ready for it's public appearance.

        • ashwin100, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2Err, 5.5G comes in 30GB and 80GB sizes. You can tell by using Shakermaker's suggestion, if you have the "Search" function in the Music menu then you have a 5.5G, if you don't, you have a 5G.
      • MarrowMan, on 12/20/2007, -0/+18There are a few differences, but if the question is how to determine the difference by looking at one, then the way to tell would be from Johnny Depp and Red Hot Chili Peppers on the box, or the "Search" function showing up under "Music" on the device itself (if you don't have the box).

        One other subtle way to tell is to look at the Settings->Brightness control. If it has a midpoint line on the indicator, then it's a "5.5G", otherwise it's a 5G. However, that's probably the least obvious way to check, and the presence of the "Search" menu item is a far more obvious thing to look for.

        The model number will also determine this, but most people might not remember that off-hand.

      Morel of the story is to be careful and make sure which one you have before you screw around with it. I thought I had a 5.5G because it said on their site that only 5.5G's could play iPod games and I bought one recently which worked on mine. But all 5G iPods also work with iPod games.

      There is a tool called ipodpatcher on the rockbox website which is multi-platform and allows flashing any iPod < Classic excluding the iPod nano 2G due to the encryption on its firmware.

      As for battery life, I think it goes down slightly. Listening to one 12-track CD at around 2/5ths volume took up around 20% of the battery, but my battery life has sucked since I bought the thing.

    1. Before plugging your iPod into your computer, you must set the main menu settings. This is because the background used for the hack has these icons implemented, and if you do not have this exact configuration, your main menu will either malfunction or take you to the wrong menus.

    * Extras
    * Settings
    2. Plug iPod into computer, and open iPodWizard.
    3. Load the firmware binary. Please, LOAD THE CORRECT FIRMWARE.
    4. Click "Write to iPod".
    5. When writing is done, click "Eject", but DO NOT UNPLUG YOUR IPOD.
    6. Your iPod will reboot. When it has successfully rebooted, your computer will redetected. Eject it again. Now you may unplug.
    7. Enjoy your iPod.
    8. If you would like to load extras, see the readme.txt in the Extras folder for specific directions.

      I had a 5g ipod 30gig and switched to the itouch 8gig. I found myself cleaning up my library and i still have plenty of space on the ipod to put things i actually listen to. I love the touch interface and the multitude of other features it offers me like wi-fi.
