oh, and Star Wars.- Heavypettingzoo, on 10/05/2008, -1/+30Did you not get the memo? Star Trek and BSG have teamed up! ...BSG would make a good battering-ram.

- cyb3rdemon, on 10/05/2008, -16/+15Star wars is more like fantasy with spaceships than science fiction.
The Death Star is just laughable. It's like building a huge tank to blow up a huge boulder to get rid of the moss on top. A 600-ton cobalt bomb is enough to kill everything on a planet and make it uninhabitable for 50 years.- Heavypettingzoo, on 10/05/2008, -3/+20you're ruining it.
- CorneliusStump, on 10/05/2008, -5/+13yeah, but it sends a pretty powerful MESSAGE don't you think
- expert01, on 10/05/2008, -1/+20But the Death Star would make it uninhabitable forever!
- RobotKeaton, on 10/05/2008, -1/+39You know what's more awesome than a bomb? A giant, flying, world destroying laser.
- cyb3rdemon, on 10/05/2008, -2/+1Well, once the radiation becomes non-lethal, they still have a world with no life or food sources, irradiated soil, no pollinators, a destroyed infrastructure, and a nuclear winter and ozone hole. The cost of rebuilding would be so high that it's effectively a dead planet for the entire war.
- GoingPostal, on 10/05/2008, -1/+14You work in a comic book store, don't you?
- Syphon8, on 10/05/2008, -1/+3Star Trek is more like fantasy with spaceships.
Maneuvering a ship while traveling at FTL speed? Pfft. - lodeswrath, on 10/05/2008, -1/+1whats a cobalt bomb
- ptdev, on 10/05/2008, -0/+3"The doomsday machine."
"The doomsday machine? What is that?"
"A device which will destroy all human and animal life on earth."
"Cobalt thorium G has a radioactive halflife of ninety three years. If you take, say, fifty H-bombs in the hundred megaton range and jacket them with cobalt thorium G, when they are exploded they will produce a doomsday shroud. A lethal cloud of radioactivity which will encircle the earth for ninety three years!"
"I'm afraid I don't understand something. Is the Premier threatening to explode this if our planes carry out their attack?"
"No sir. It is not a thing a sane man would do. The doomsday machine is designed to to trigger itself automatically."
"But this is absolute madness, ambassador. Why should you build such a thing?"
"There are those of us who fought against it, but in the end we could not keep up with the expense involved in the arms race, the space race, and the peace race. And at the same time our people grumbled for more nylons and washing machines. Our doomsday scheme cost us just a small fraction of what we'd been spending on defense in a single year. But the deciding factor was when we learned that your country was working along similar lines, and we were afraid of a doomsday gap."
"This is preposterous. I've never approved of anything like that."
"Our source was the New York Times."
"Dr. Strangelove, do we have anything like that in the works?"
- sputnike, on 10/05/2008, -1/+14Actually the power of an Imperial Star Destroyer doesn't match that of a standard Galaxy Class Federation starship - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNxhrPaaCA4
Although to be fair, the death star on the other hand...- IdanE, on 10/05/2008, -0/+9To be fair, this is a very poor representation of this sort of conflict - an SSD carries approx. a ***** of fighters & bombers - not a handfull. In addition, it has an insane amount of firepower of its own, none of which was used.
Oh, and an SSD is much bigger than the enterprise - combatchuck, on 10/05/2008, -0/+3If we're going to be comparing the bad guys weaponry from each series... Borg Cube bitches.
- rl41, on 10/05/2008, -0/+7Remember, the ability to destroy a planet is insignificant compared to the power of the force
- IdanE, on 10/05/2008, -0/+9To be fair, this is a very poor representation of this sort of conflict - an SSD carries approx. a ***** of fighters & bombers - not a handfull. In addition, it has an insane amount of firepower of its own, none of which was used.
- Herostratos, on 10/05/2008, -5/+3Star wars would pwn star trek hard:
http://stardestroyer.net/Empire/Essays/FiveMinutes ...- Kamill85, on 10/05/2008, -1/+3^ you realize that those power-numbers for Empire's ships are taken out of the GL ass? Star Trek was meant to be as close to reality as possible. Star Wars is a fantasy movie, you can replace those ships with one Gandalf sorcerer, holding a laser stick capable of firing one bazillion^gazillion GW beam - same thing.
- Syphon8, on 10/05/2008, -1/+4What, exactly, is realistic in Star Trek?
- Observer001, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2Well, of course they're all made up, we don't -have- starships capable of FTL travel or armaments appropriate for them. The series are equally unrealistic. Maybe Star Wars is from a much further along history? Maybe the question is closer in nature to "who would win, America vs. Rome".
Now there's entities in Star Trek that'd stand a chance, no doubt. Q. The Borg, if they had the element of surprise long enough to consume a bit of Star Wars tech.
- Nitesmoke, on 10/05/2008, -1/+2This pic gets funnier each time it makes the front page.

star trek wins, star wars is just lame, the aliens suck, why does c3p0 translate everything into english and everyone understands that, why dont both aliens just speak friggin english? - MrM4nager, on 10/05/2008, -0/+56It's really not a fair fight. But I mean, a one man fighter did take out an entire space station. They would never design their defenses to fight off a one man fighter.
- ironhide, on 10/05/2008, -1/+210Lame, it's obviously a Galaxy class starship.

http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Borg_cube
http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Sovereign_class - expert01, on 10/05/2008, -0/+39Sovereign Class
16 phaser arrays
4 forward torpedo launchers
6 aft torpedo launchers, firing both photon and quantum torpedoes
ISII
Octuple barbette turbolaser cannons (8)
Additional turbolaser cannons and batteries (60)
Ion cannons (20)
Phylon Q7 tractor beam projectors (10)
TIE Fighter Squadron
Not to mention size, .6km for the sovereign and 1.6km for the ISII (and the ISII has a lot more bulk as well).
I would pit an ISII against a borg cube, however (2.25km^3). - IndigoMoss, on 10/05/2008, -1/+32@expert01

- greywolfexcel, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2you win
- MosaicM, on 10/05/2008, -1/+11No, it wouldn't. Star Destroyers as someone else has mentioned go far SLOWER than any warp capable vessel. And of course the ST ships could always use the picard maneuver: Immediately accelerate to warp 9, come out of warp and immediately launch all weapons at the vessel. The Star Destroyer would never see this coming. While the Enterprise could easily just go back into warp before the SD can even launch it's fighters.
ALSO: Lasers (Or turbo lasers) do NOTHING against standard federation shielding. As was said in numerous Star Trek episodes.
And don't get me started on how the Borg would totally ***** up any Star Wars vessel. Death star or not.- Fygee, on 10/05/2008, -0/+6Kudos for pointing this out to all the Star Wars heads. It's not even a fair fight. The Enterprise D would own the ***** out of any Star Wars vessel.
- Syphon8, on 10/05/2008, -0/+6And yet, a Jedi would ***** up the enterprise.

No question.- whahaa, on 10/05/2008, -6/+12if you're talking style, then that's a matter of opinion and can't really be disputed.
but if we're talking about a fight, then it's the enterprise hands down. nothing the star destroyer has would even weaken the enterprise's deflector shields. phasers are exponentially more powerful than lasers, and even a single photon torpedo would be more than enough to explode a destroyer to bits.- expert01, on 10/05/2008, -0/+7Why is it that a turbolaser blast can do major damage on a city, whereas a phaser at regular power just makes consoles explode?
- wautrey, on 10/05/2008, -0/+5You've obviously never seen the many, many episodes of ToS where Kirk used the Enterprise's phasers on ***** GROUND TARGETS from orbit have you? He put an entire city to sleep by setting them on stun.

- rheaume, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2That was my arch nemesis for a new Trek series I was dreaming about, far into the future. main ship on the series would be a war ship, the universe would be in constant flux, lots of terrorism, massive battles; in space, on the ground, and even in hallways of ships, grenades, rapid fire weapons. It could do well on the tube I think :)

- Nightenglow, on 10/05/2008, -1/+185Those Star Trek ships need SEAT BELTS!! like every episode they are getting knock out of their chairs, you'd think they would come factory
- klowngoblin, on 10/05/2008, -5/+22no, they have inertial dampeners just like on stargate atlantis (starwars doesnt have seat belts either)
at least startrek has an excuse for not having them- MrM4nager, on 10/05/2008, -1/+52WRONG! In Episode four when the Falcon is taking off from Mos Isley, you definitely see Obi Won, Luke, and the droids strapping themselves in right before C-3PO states how he forgot how much he hates space travel
- WarnerK, on 10/05/2008, -0/+47^^Dugg not for being right, but for knowing Star Wars so well that you can recall them buckling their seat belts.
- klowngoblin, on 10/05/2008, -9/+3yeah your right, i can kinda remember now, but you only proved that starwars is inferior becuase their smaller attack craft cant manuver as fast since it would kill the pilot where as in startrek and atlantis they can make crazy high G banks and turns.
- eridius, on 10/05/2008, -0/+10klowngoblin, you have no idea what you're talking about. Star Wars has inertial dampeners too.
- LucasVB, on 10/05/2008, -1/+10The Federation is a lot more underfunded than you think. Those Redshirts, ex life prisioners, are paid with conditional freedom. The phasers? 20 year old tech.

- klowngoblin, on 10/05/2008, -2/+6what is a light saber going to do against a torpedo again?
also the torpedoes on startwars are just explosives i think
the torpedoes on startrek are matter-antimatter reactions (much more powerful)
then you have quantum torpedoes which harness their power from ZPE- sandwichkid45, on 10/05/2008, -1/+3once again... i couldn't hear your nerdy anti-matter/ matter reaction argument over the sound of your dick screaming in loneliness.

- PrometheusBorn, on 10/05/2008, -0/+56Oh please, that is not a Constitution class starship, my friend.
That's a GALAXY class starship. May not have the gunpower, but could run circles around the Imperial II.- klowngoblin, on 10/05/2008, -1/+6true, Warp 9 is 1516 times the speed of light, stardestroyers can only go 0.5 past light speed?
warp is an exponential scale, warp 1 is light speed, warp 2 is like 10 times the speed of light- appleofdischord, on 10/05/2008, -1/+7Your math fu is weak.
If warp 2 is 10x warp 1, and it's exponential, then Warp 9 is 1 billion times the speed of light. - klowngoblin, on 10/05/2008, -0/+4sorry warp 2 is 8 times
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warp_drive - Logicexe, on 10/05/2008, -1/+5Kinda hard to have a galaxy wide civilization when your fastest ships can only go 1.5 C. Whatever Han was talking about with his "point 5 past light speed" he couldn't have meant 1.5 C.
- Foofoofoofoobar, on 10/05/2008, -0/+5Or it could mean a really small galaxy. They never said how big the Star Wars galaxy was.
- Logicexe, on 10/05/2008, -0/+4It could be a small galaxy compared to the milky way, but to zip around the galaxy like they do in Star Wars at 1.5 C would require a galaxy no larger than a several light days. Did you actually watch any of the Star Wars movies? There are millions of inhabited systems. They could not all possibly fit in an area not much larger than our solar system.
- DeusMachina, on 10/05/2008, -1/+11What Han meant was that the falcon could go 0.5 past light speed in normal space... However Star Wars did have hyperspace whereby they could travel from one end of galaxy to other in a few days iirc.
Ok, I'll go find that girl now. - PrometheusBorn, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2@Deus
My comment was implying that the Enterprise would be WAY more maneuverable in fire fight. The Destroyer is likely to crash into the Death Star trying to steer its way around the Enterprise.
Hyperspace travel does no good in that kind of up close battle.
Oh god, I think a zit just appeared on my face from my teenage nerdiness coming through. - reduxien, on 10/05/2008, -0/+2NERDS!!!
- Logicexe, on 10/06/2008, -0/+2PrometheusBorn, when was the last time anyone in Star Trek actually used wapr during a space battle? Sure all true geeks may know of the Picard maneuver, but how often is anything remotely like that ever used? Heck, apparently fooling around with your warp drives during a battle is rare enough that it warrants naming a maneuver out of the guy who did it. Why don't Trek ships routinely zip around each other making passes at warp speed?
- appleofdischord, on 10/05/2008, -1/+7Your math fu is weak.
- MosaicM, on 10/05/2008, -0/+4Yes but star wars ships use Turbo Lasers, which are basically just bigger lasers. While Star Trek Ships use Phasers, which are vastly different weapons. I remember in one episode of Next gen that a ship mounted with lasers was coming to fight the enterprise (because they wanted their daughter back or some ***** like that) and Worf basically laughed at them. Lasers do NOTHING against standard Federation shielding.
