The 5 Most Ridiculously Unfair Kids Game Shows
cracked.com — Who doesn't like to watch children fail at things? It builds character in them and it makes us laugh, which is why it inspired a whole era of kid-based game shows in the late 80s and early 90s.

- moblin7, on 07/27/2008, -2/+291What about Legends of the Hidden Temple?
- AsSubtleAsABrik, on 07/27/2008, -2/+111Putting that damn monkey together did not look hard at all. They just filtered through the kids with some sort of idiot test, ensuring only the stupidest ones had the opportunity to play.
- Fhwqhgads, on 07/27/2008, -1/+31I think many game shows do that.
Why don't those Jeopardy people go on one of the other, more easy shows out there? Much more money to be won. - carls021, on 07/28/2008, -1/+5What about Wild and Crazy Kids with Cuba Gooding Jr's brother
- TVarmy, on 07/28/2008, -6/+7Jeopardy has more prestigue. Saying, "I won $70,000 over the course of 3 Jeopardy games!" sounds like something a genius would say. Winning $125,000 on "Who Wants to Be A Millionaire?" doesn't take as much skill.
- Futsuriai, on 07/28/2008, -1/+27@TVarmy
Yeah... on the other hand "I won $125k" sounds better than "I won $75k"... - bluezinc, on 07/28/2008, -1/+18"***** SILVER MONKEY!! JUST PUT IT'S HEAD ON!! COME ON!!!" - 10 year old me
- Kzoo, on 07/28/2008, -3/+2Could be. I think there's a personality component too. Some games seem to require one to be willing to be enthusiastically happy over whatever happens (and act correspondingly idiotic).
- Fhwqhgads, on 07/28/2008, -0/+4@TVarmy:
If you chose to win a lousy 70k over three games when you could have won a million on ONE game, then you can't really call yourself a "genius".
- Fhwqhgads, on 07/27/2008, -1/+31I think many game shows do that.
- inv1ctus, on 07/28/2008, -0/+43The only thing that made that show unfair was those damn temple people that were sometimes in the pit... or sometimes not. What the hell is that?
- AgentD, on 07/28/2008, -0/+35those guys scared the ***** out of me when i was little
- mV0G7, on 07/28/2008, -0/+36watching kids getting freaked out by the temple guards was priceless
- zenthax, on 07/28/2008, -0/+6hahaha that was just awesome, and they also scared me when i was little
- Dr00pieS, on 07/28/2008, -0/+13That entire show was great. From the first challenge across the little swamp/pool thing, the giant talking face statue and the damn temple course.
That show is easily in the top 3 of favorite shows when I was a kid. - TVarmy, on 07/28/2008, -0/+14I wouldn't go down without a fight. They could take that token out of my cold, dead hands.
- Oea420, on 07/28/2008, -1/+11The coice is yours, and yours alone.. good luck
- bluezinc, on 07/28/2008, -0/+5I liked how the rules were that once the temple guy got you, he'd take your token away, but some kids just shoved the temple guy away and ran with the token and they just went with it.
- MissElle, on 07/28/2008, -0/+48That game astonished me. It was on for a decent amount of time, but every single goddamned kid would get on there and not know how the 3 piece monkey goes together.
Or they'd forget how to sit in the chair and hit buttons.
HONESTLY. - scubachef11, on 07/28/2008, -0/+17Reading your comment gave me a Nickelodeon flashback.
- PunkFenixJT, on 07/28/2008, -0/+45Things I'll always remember about Legends of the Hidden Temple:
1) Stay out of the forest if at all possible, it ALWAYS seemed to have an evil haunted tree.
2) 3 Piece monkey statues are apparently harder than they look..- SreyaNotfilc, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1I've always dreaded kids going that way through the temple. I can only imagine what the felt like when they are rushing through the temple and some tribal-wearing man jumps out of no where and grapples them. I'm sure many have crapped their pants! Like the great William Cosby saying "First you say it... then you do it".
- cubuffs155, on 07/28/2008, -1/+2There was always a Temple Guard in the first suit of armor they chose also.
- MooKie89, on 07/28/2008, -0/+9All i have to saw is that those damn temple guards scared the crap out of me! If i was a little kid, there was no way i was going to jump in a maze where guys would jump out and grab me. Screw that! And the prize was always something like a lifetime supply of whistle pops...YEAH!!!
- MostNutsEver, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1The prize was always something awesome, like going to Space Camp. Which of course absolutely no one ever won, because the maze was damned near impossible, except for the few times they decided to keep the easiest path "unlocked" and not make you go through every single room, and then have your partner come in as you are buried in the furthest side from the entrance with only a half a pendant of life left. Insanely hard.
- tendonut, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1No, it was always a Daewoo VCR or some other extremely ***** electronics device. Even when I was 12 I was like "I don't want that *****. Give me a real brand name"
- TVarmy, on 07/28/2008, -0/+17Why isn't it a Wii game yet? Seriously, our generation wants to play it more than ever.
- mV0G7, on 07/28/2008, -0/+42Gotta love the prize for the two stupid-ass teams not getting past the ***** moat in the first round.
Host: "But you're not going home empty handed! Olmec tell them what they've won..."
Olmec: "You'vewondelcious GOBSTOPPERS from WILLY WONKA!"- joegibes, on 07/28/2008, -0/+5"stupid ass-teams"

- joegibes, on 07/28/2008, -0/+5"stupid ass-teams"
- skippy17, on 07/28/2008, -1/+34Someone who had actually been on the show talked about going through the temple.
Apparently they took the kids through the temple beforehand and gave them a run through of all the rooms, even telling them where the temple guards are and which route to take. You would even practice each of the rooms beforehand. Anyone who wasn't able to beat the temple was pretty much an idiot.- tendonut, on 07/28/2008, -0/+5Wow, my head just exploded from all the people who were much dumber then I thought.
- kidathinnes, on 07/28/2008, -0/+4And I never saw anybody beat it. So what does that mean?
- WheezyMustafa, on 07/28/2008, -1/+25I was always afraid when I was a kid that those 'amazon' guys in the temple raped the kids when they took them away.
- tendonut, on 07/28/2008, -1/+3No you weren't.
- An800lbGorilla, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1Yeah, but I had a friend. Him and the 'amazon' guys Got. It. On.

Worst attempt ever at the shrine of the silver monkey.- An800lbGorilla, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1I almost pissed myself laughing at the commenting by the host.
- Rach1251, on 07/28/2008, -0/+4I always planned to run away from the temple guards, because of course I thought I was going to get on the show one day. I saw ONE kid do that. He was awesome.
- jeebodon, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2Hah I remember watching one time and the host kept getting mad at the kid running the final maze.
"Hit the button Kyle....hit the BUTTON...you gotta PUSH THE BUTTON!"
Something like that, wish I could find the tape I had... - CarStan, on 07/28/2008, -1/+4http://olmecguide.ytmnd.com/
thats all there is to say about this show- Archer007, on 07/28/2008, -2/+2WTF is that CSS-based text shadowing??
- tendonut, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2I came in here specifically to ask about that game show. Was there ever a way to avoid those people hiding in the trees and in the walls? It was like...if they didn't want to give away a prize, just stick one tree dude per contestant and you've got a guaranteed loser. I got so angry when I was little watching that. Such a ***** scam. There was nothing you could do about it. The first person NEVER made it all the way through because eventually, you'd run into a guard. No skill involved.
- XHashmeerX, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2I think there were only about 5 or 6 full out wins in the entire show's running.
- bamababe753, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1Seriously, I rarely saw ANYONE come out of the temple. The shrine of the silver monkey was cheap.
- iamkid, on 07/30/2008, -1/+0that show was horrible...the kids must have had 1 minute to get through that giant piece of ***** temple, and half the time, it was probably rigged to not be solvable
- AsSubtleAsABrik, on 07/27/2008, -2/+111Putting that damn monkey together did not look hard at all. They just filtered through the kids with some sort of idiot test, ensuring only the stupidest ones had the opportunity to play.
- Mabx86, on 07/27/2008, -1/+52The kids looked miserable on that slop machine and legends of the hidden temple definitely should be on there, the final stage was near impossible
- 801NvizioN, on 07/28/2008, -0/+19Who cares how hard it was.
They won a trip to *****' space camp.- spkrcity, on 07/28/2008, -0/+10And some British Knights.
- 801NvizioN, on 07/28/2008, -0/+19Not just any British Knights, BK RATCH TECH.
- 801NvizioN, on 07/28/2008, -0/+19Who cares how hard it was.
- NeoCortex, on 07/27/2008, -2/+108...with a belt.
- Radica1Faith, on 07/28/2008, -0/+5Whats wrong with getting whipped with a belt? Thats what I got from 5 to 10. And I turned out okay. I think.
- dearmansoor, on 07/27/2008, -1/+11Some of these shows are nice to see
- Dr00pieS, on 07/28/2008, -0/+4What was the name of the show that Omar Gooding (is that the right name?) was on with the other two people? There would be three teams and they would have all sorts of crazy challenges to do. I remember one was "which team can toilet paper the cabin the most in "X" amount of minutes?"
God, being a kid in the early 90's was great.- pilot3033, on 07/28/2008, -0/+7wild and crazy kids
That's the other thing, Nick stopped showing sports programming....
Imagine the positive impact bringing GUTS or Wild and Crazy Kids back? Encourage kids to go out and play for once instead of staying inside all day.
- pilot3033, on 07/28/2008, -0/+7wild and crazy kids
- Oea420, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2Was it Wild and Crazy Kids? That has to be it...
Edit:
yeah that was the show...
"Wild and Crazy Kids was a game show on Nickelodeon, that aired from 1990-1992, in which large teams, usually consisting entirely of children, participated in head-to-head physical challenges. It was hosted by Omar Gooding, Donnie Jeffcoat, and Annette Chavez. Chavez was replaced after a year by Jessica Gaynes. The show also aired on YTV in Canada. In 2002, a remake hosted by Mati Moralejo was aired for seven episodes."
I always remembered that show because they had some challegne where there would be hard boiled eggs and uncooked ones... learned hwo to tell them apart cause of that show at a very young age hahah - diggystardust, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1I just think it's crazy to see the "terrorist fist jab" on nick arcade 15 years ago
- Dr00pieS, on 07/28/2008, -0/+4What was the name of the show that Omar Gooding (is that the right name?) was on with the other two people? - chocobomog, on 07/27/2008, -0/+47Great, now I'm going to have Rockapella riffs stuck in my head for the rest of the day.
- newsfully, on 07/27/2008, -0/+16Hit it, Rockapella!
- rz8472, on 07/28/2008, -1/+18I'll help
Doo-wap, shoob-shoobie shoo-wap, doob doobie doo wap... - praisethelard, on 07/28/2008, -1/+4Is it just me, or did they talk about getting stoned in that song?
- ck1223, on 07/28/2008, -0/+3BOOOOOOOOWWWWW!
- Shawn4168, on 07/28/2008, -1/+2But really, is that such a bad thing?
- rocketman42, on 07/27/2008, -1/+12Why does the Fun House one sound like it is being played on a projector?
- dlrudden, on 07/27/2008, -0/+68I'm Telling was a really bizarre gameshow. And the host was a total pedo.

- bravo1995, on 07/28/2008, -0/+110I used to watch that show and think about how I'd destroy those kids.
Then my mom reminded me that I was 13 and they were 9.- Dr00pieS, on 07/28/2008, -0/+15You would have dominated!

- david76, on 07/28/2008, -2/+6Did you get stuck having to identify countries in Africa? It was so obvious whenever that happened that the US education system completely ignores Africa.
- tman84, on 07/28/2008, -2/+6USA is just the worst country isn't it. Every 8 year old should know where Peoples United Republic of Freedom Fighting of Liberia is, oh wait they changed names last week.
- FoxOrian, on 07/28/2008, -0/+9I still can't believe that show only gave kids 45 seconds to finish the map. That girl in the video was pretty fast. It's like they figured out that 45 seconds is the absolute minimum time required to solve the map. I mean, it's a handy measure to ensure the show doesn't have to spend the studios money on a free trip every episode. I mean, it WAS PBS.
But seriously, how many kids ACTUALLY won the show?
Also, at the end of the video, that kids glasses are priceless.
- HumanRecalled, on 07/28/2008, -17/+1Jack Nicholson ? that swhat the gay voice sounded like on WHERE in the World is Carmen Sandiego?

You will be awkward and incompetent in any universe, real or imaginary. - michaelrsa, on 07/28/2008, -1/+78I tell yeah, kids today have their game shows to easy. These were the good old times when a game show was not about having a fun time but about crushing kid's hopes and dreams with arbitrary obstacles beyond their control to show them what life is like. Building character, that's what they were about and what we need to go back to

- SreyaNotfilc, on 07/28/2008, -2/+0I have a few times, but it was on the United States map. Ugh, I've always dreaded the South American and Asian map.
- ownwonnow, on 07/28/2008, -0/+5South America has 13 countries. I think you're thinking of Africa which has 53.
The whole point of the bit on CS is that the girl obviously knew the countries, but didn't have enough time to finish the map between the ridiculous 45 second limit and the *****, wobbly props. - SreyaNotfilc, on 07/28/2008, -0/+0Yah, it might have been Africa. Then again, the only map I really knew (well, barely) was the US map. The other countries were... foreign to me.

- GordonV, on 07/28/2008, -2/+19For Nick Arcade: Most of the kids playing the video games were really bad @ them also. (This is a plain old TV to Console to Wired Controller set up.)
They pre-screen the good players from the bad players and record the bad sessions. Mainly because it's a faster work day for them.- spkrcity, on 07/28/2008, -0/+13Don't know why you're being buried. Its true. I remember one of the games was Sonic. No one ever did the little burn-out move or any of the other moves that would come easy to a true gamer. If you can't wrangle a few rings, you have no business being on a video game based game show.
When they asked the kids what their hobbies were, it was never gaming. It was shopping, horseback riding, baseball, reading.
ONCE they had this long-haired guy who said his favorite hobby was video games. He tore it up on Ghost Rider, but failed at the final challenge.- SreyaNotfilc, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1....stinkin' green screen stage. I remember a kid was too short to collect coins above his head. - Spindash54, on 07/28/2008, -0/+9I'm hoping someone in digg can remember this gameshow from PBS. It aired either before or after Carmen Sandiago. I can't remember the name for the life of me, but it had a sci-fi theme with lots of silver and rock. One of the challenges involved one kid feeling his way through a cavern blind with his partner giving him directions to open the door.
- xiaozanghou, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2Could it possibly be Secrets of the Cryptkeeper's Haunted House? It's the only children's game show I remember that was paired with Carmen Sandiego. That little rotting skull puppet was a staple of my childhood.

Here is a list of a ton of shows from PBS, maybe it is in there somewhere. - grimeygutter, on 07/28/2008, -0/+3How about this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masters_of_the_Maze
"The maze had three sections: the Mirror Maze, the Honeycomb Maze, and the Chamber of Knowledge. The person that answered the questions in the first part of the game was also the one responsible for running through the maze, with their team partner guiding them through the maze by moving a giant joystick. This device controlled a computerized voice telling the contestant which direction to go, and triggered rumble devices on the outfit the runner wore as an additional directional aid. The joystick also had a button that controlled the runner's laser which was used in various parts of the game."
Its not credited to PBS though. - JayFive, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2I couldn't remember the name either, but went ahead and searched around... Hopefully i'm thinking of the same thing, because I found what I was looking for. It's called Masters of the Maze... enjoy the nostalgia, and thanks for reminding me about the show

- Dr00pieS, on 07/28/2008, -0/+15I know what you mean. It seems like back then the people that made these children's shows actually gave a ***** about the product they were putting on television. The worst part is, that's one of the easier ones they did, before instead of just saying "Carmen went to brazil!" he would actually give a hint before just telling them the ***** answer "This country's largest export is Coffee and Soybeans! CARMEN WENT TO BRAZIL!"
The other ***** thing is look how long it takes for the light to go on the pole, kid has to wait like 2 seconds before seeing if she got it right.
I saw 1 kid win ever. - MrZaiko, on 07/28/2008, -4/+2I remember Fun House. At the end the had to swim and look for a treasure chest.

Ran for years and only a handful of people managed to win, it was a pretty epic experience as a kid watching a team play through the dungeon (which may have taken 2-3 episodes to do as it was quite long) only to get unfairly butchered at the last hurdle. - REBELinBLUE, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2Knightmare was awesome and insanely impossible
