- AshamedAmerican, on 07/06/2008, -5/+5How exactly? Thin trace paper taped over the tablet, then just run the stylus over it?
- evil-doer, on 07/06/2008, -2/+12wacoms (i dont know if all of them are like this) have a clear plastic on the top that you can put pictures UNDER to trace.
- AshamedAmerican, on 07/06/2008, -1/+4Ah ok gotcha, thanks.
- Caalro, on 07/06/2008, -3/+11That is not true.
When he zooms into different parts of the painting, or moves around, he would have to have a new 'picture' of what he is tracing over because what he is drawing on will have changed. The use of blurs and soft brushes alone disprove that he is a 'tracer'.
Face the facts, some people goto school and learn how to draw / use a wacom / do this stuff for a living EVERY DAY. I'm sure he practiced the initial layout a few times to get it working, but after that, all skill.

On to relevance.. I truly am in awe at what people can do within Photoshop to create something from nothing so elegantly.. The process of painting something with a simple brush and color tool in Photoshop will most probably be something I will never master in my lifetime. Not to mention the fact that this seems to be much like what many artist can accomplish on canvass, which has been around for far longer than any PC based artistic program.
Whoever created this should take pride in their ability. :)- jb0nd38372, on 07/06/2008, -10/+119I tried to keep you from getting burried. I think on some days, at certian times with certian articles users get bury happy. I applaude your effort to make a valid comment on the post in question.

Artists have some very odd layering techniques to come up with a final product. Have you ever seen the artists that use layered spray painting techniques to come up with vibrant and detailed art? Here in Vancouver they have been hanging around a popular area downtown doing it right on the spot.. I could never figure out how they could perceive the final product of layered spraying!
Some things are best left to the ones able to do them. It should be this mentality everywhere but in politics.. Look at Bush :[ - silfiriel, on 07/06/2008, -7/+2yes i have, artists that use canvas and brushes and sprays are much more diferent that photoshop masters. I still don't buy the video...

- RomanThommassen, on 07/06/2008, -25/+4Congrats on the second dugg comment
- Radan, on 07/06/2008, -2/+33Though, what I find very frustration is how painting with the use of a wacom tablet instead of a regular canvas, isn't considered as "art" among the masses, simply because "one just pressed a button on the computer to create it".
While it is indeed possible to create a lot of things simply by using premade brushes, but real painting, like this and even more, art where the artist fully uses the potential of Photoshop, is in my opinion at least, as good if not better than most of the crap that "real" artists sell for thousands of euros.
Now, I know that I most likely wasted my time here, since this comment will most likely get buried to oblivion like the rest, which is a shame as I think denominator started a rather interesting thread here.- denominator, on 07/06/2008, -2/+9I have never truly been exposed to today's current art scene, so I would have no idea whether or not digital art mediums such as Photoshop are widely accepted.. But I must have to agree with you with what you implied, which is how art should be valued as what it is attempting to realize as opposed to how it is actually created..
If Dali's 'Persistence of Memory' (the melting clocks painting) was drawn with a pencil, brush, sculpture or in our case, a digital art program, I'd still enjoy it for the message it brings to me.
link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Persistence_of_Me ...
No, you didn't waste your time :p - Wadajoobadude, on 07/06/2008, -0/+8On art being so expensive:
While I understand many pieces of art are way overpriced, there is a flip-side to the debate.
Making art is super expensive. Seriously, I just do stenciling on large canvas and It comes out to almost $100. It's on cheap canvas too. If you start using top of the line materials, and you are trying to make a living off of art, things are going to start being expensive. - aywwts4, on 07/06/2008, -1/+2In the amount I and I'm sure other art lovers appreciate art, Digital or Analog makes no difference. In the way Art Collectors price and value a piece of art, a digital print can be duplicated flawlessly infinitely with all clones being of equal authenticity, severely devaluing the dollar value of a piece.
- Nysul, on 07/07/2008, -1/+3I'm no art critic, but the appeal of art to me (other than famous paintings) is the individualization of each piece. If something can just be massed produced digitally why spend money when I could just pick up something online for $25.
- ghostoftomjoad, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2As someone who dabbles in art i can tell you that digital art cannot replace the substance and complexity of a non-digital medium like oil paint. There is a deep love of the physicality of it by art appreciators, and that is why digital art isn't regarded as highly. Not to say this guy isn't talented--he's very good and he's just doing something different. But there definitely is a reason for "real artist crap" to be worth more
- denominator, on 07/06/2008, -2/+9I have never truly been exposed to today's current art scene, so I would have no idea whether or not digital art mediums such as Photoshop are widely accepted.. - MrSidnet, on 07/06/2008, -2/+18Gotta love the "Learn how to paint by seeing"! After watching the vid, I feel no more enabled to paint this than before.
- solidcube, on 07/06/2008, -6/+5it's really much easier to make art in PShop than on canvas. There are processes for each. When you learn the process, you can do pretty much whatever you want, and the challenge enters the realm of composition and imagination.
This guy's process is strange. He appears to use small brush painting and blurs. While this method may produce superior 3-dimensionality (haven't tried it) it also seems a bit redundant because the blurs eliminate detail. He might be better off laying in larger areas before the blurs, and then erasing out of the blur layers to produce detail...- Drakoola, on 07/07/2008, -1/+2This is true, if you watch Nico Di Mattia almost everything he draws remains in the final, at least much more than this artist. I don't know how long this guy has been painting, but I would hazard a guess that Nico may have a bit more practice than him.
Here's him doing Optimus Prime, you can find more at his website in the description.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gDl4UTxioQ&feature ... - solidcube, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1This guy's technique also seems to end up with a interesting dimensionality, like around the eyes. Still seems like a longish road to take to get there.
