While the exact number of extant countries depends on your political opinions, we can mostly all agree that there are roughly 200 countries out there, and all of 'em have at least one flag. You probably know a good chunk of 'em, but the odds of recognizing all of 'em are slim.
Redditor u/mostlyReadingIt charted which flags people are most and least likely to know using data from a multiple choice quiz from FlagWhiz. It's certainly not perfect data, but it does give us a rough idea of the recognizability gap between different flags.
Key findings:

The most-recognized flags are from China, Germany, India, France, Italy, South Korea, Brazil, the UK, Canada and Japan. Between 97.5 and 100 percent of participants could identify those flags.

At the bottom of the list are flags from Vanuatu and Mauritius. Between 60 and 62.5 percent of people could pick those out, but we'd bet that those numbers would crash if it wasn't a multiple-choice quiz.

Surprisingly, the United States flag doesn't fall in the most-recognizable category. It's still very high (95 to 97.5 percent), so we'll just chalk up the dip to a few other flags using similar designs.
