25 Reasons You Might Be A Hardcore Graphic/Web Designer
cg-files.com — I came up with this list of signs that you might be a hardcore designer. A lot of these signs can overlap other professions too. From my experience, the following list contains mostly truths, mixed in with a little humor.
- 974 diggs
- digg it
- nobodyfamous28, on 10/26/2007, -3/+30You’ve learned your lesson and stopped using the word “final” in any file name when saving.
so true!! lol- ravamp3, on 10/21/2007, -4/+2i still do it and i don't know why....
- tmoore44, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2same here
- pabloD, on 10/21/2007, -0/+17I still do, because anything after a final is billed separately.
- webRat, on 10/21/2007, -1/+4What happens after _finalfinal?
- Enochyang, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1haha. this should be teh #1 reason.
- soupnrc, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1I'm guilty of more than one of these. I'm not really a designer by trade... more of a hobby... Either way, still pretty smooth.
- ravamp3, on 10/21/2007, -4/+2i still do it and i don't know why....
- graviplana, on 10/19/2007, -0/+25Sigh, this list is completely true. I can relate. Dugg up. Favorite. Thanks. But the poster should've made a Comic Sans reference, IMO. :)
- jdmcadam, on 10/17/2007, -0/+10Like how as soon as anyone uses Comic Sans, your opinion of them and their product/service drops though the floor?
- CaponeX, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1Hmm, pretty much. Yeah. (See: http://www.designobserver.com/archives/016321.html ...
- billymonster, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4or papyrus, most overused font ever.
- hypermint, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2LMAO papyrus..good times
- Fluffiness, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1Papyrus is the ***** bain of my existance. I'm constantly throwing temper tantrums when I see it.
- texpundit, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1Hell, the only ones that didn't completely apply to me are 4 and 21. I can actually touch type 80wpm and I'd much rather go out drinking that sit home and piddle in photoshop.
Maybe that second part comes from also being a musician. *shrugs*
- jdmcadam, on 10/17/2007, -0/+10Like how as soon as anyone uses Comic Sans, your opinion of them and their product/service drops though the floor?
- dicerandom, on 10/20/2007, -2/+35For someone who claims to know about "hardcore graphic/web designer[s]" this guy has a pretty horrific site design.
- SvenGeiss, on 10/16/2007, -1/+6haha. true..
- LoveWidescreen, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4No one ever said that "hardcore" and "talented" were synonymous. ;)
- honeymustardn, on 10/17/2007, -10/+4This list is incredibly old. I'm sure I read this when I first visited Digg like a year or so ago.
- GaffleSnipe, on 10/26/2007, -0/+3Yeah, I wrote that article on BittBox.com around six months ago.
http://www.bittbox.com/rants/25-reasons-you-might- ...
and the copycat site's contact page is missing. . . hmmm. .- ronnsprocket, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1bittbox ftw! i knew i read it somewhere
- GaffleSnipe, on 10/26/2007, -0/+3Yeah, I wrote that article on BittBox.com around six months ago.
- littleorfnannie, on 10/18/2007, -7/+7Buried for already being dugg before.
- evanbooth, on 10/26/2007, -0/+71400x330concept_11b_final_newfont3_LATEST-6_!!!USETHISONE!!!_2.psd
- smaisch, on 10/18/2007, -0/+9Oh how I remember those days. I have resorted to using the Greek alphabet as well.
- RadicalEdward, on 10/19/2007, -1/+11I consider bathroom breaks and sleeping interruptions too.
- kogeki, on 10/17/2007, -0/+5And phone calls. These interruptions also apply when I am playing a video games. It really sucks when the outside world interrupts you.
- WaterMedia, on 10/19/2007, -0/+10Jesus - there is a whole world of people like me out there. HELLO FRIENDS.
- KevenM, on 10/16/2007, -1/+4Fun read, even if it doesn't apply to you.
- jacksyi, on 10/17/2007, -0/+7Sometimes an old story or list should be resubmitted, for those who didn't catch it that last time.
- centran, on 10/19/2007, -4/+24I hate number 18 the most
"You’ve had to explain to a client that a layered file wasn’t part of the deal"
Trying to get a graphic designer to give you their "raw" file is like pulling teeth.
"Can you send me the photoshop file?"..."Uh, I did it in Illustrator"..."Thats OK, send me that"..."I can send you a pdf. That way it looks correct on all formats"..."No, I really want the original file so I can pull some graphics easily from it for other projects"..."Yeah well, I did it in Quark so I doubt you have that. I can send you a tiff!"..."You just said you did it in Illustrator. 'F' you!"- DesignerScott, on 10/19/2007, -0/+17Truth is designers do it for repeat business, and so that amateur hacks don't 'F' up there work!
I always specify what exactly I'm turning over in my contracts for that reason.
So don't make us out to be liars and cheats, we're mostly just protecting our underpaid asses!- MiDri, on 10/19/2007, -0/+10Exactly! You get the finished product, if you want a slightly different version of it you come back to me -- you dont' take my work and pay some schmuck to destroy it.
- Chirp08, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2True but at the same time I working as a designer often need the original artwork of past outsourced files all the time. I'm the only graphic designer working here, than we have one guy we often outsource larger projects I don't have time for too. For consistency we constantly must contact each other for original artwork and InDesign files.
There should also be a mention of anything less than 300dpi might as well be a crayon drawing by your three year old haha.

- centran, on 10/17/2007, -3/+1It is not your "work" it is their company image. Let them F it up if they want. They will learn right quick that they suck at designing.
The thing that pisses me off is changing a small thing. What about running the same ad again but the first one had a date that needs to be changed.... another $80 down the drain to change one thing. - KSUdesigner, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4That's why you should always write up a contract specifying what type of file the client will receive in the end. I also like to include, "Working/layered documents can be made available for a nominal fee, to be determined by the designer at the time of request." This fee is usually pretty substantial too.
- DesignerScott, on 10/19/2007, -0/+17Truth is designers do it for repeat business, and so that amateur hacks don't 'F' up there work!
- liquisoft, on 10/16/2007, -1/+1I'm guilty of every single one of these except for the ticket stub thing.
- MacBrowser, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1Lie, i saw you pick up this ticket ;-)
- Jarasmen, on 10/18/2007, -1/+7"You clean your keyboard more often than you wash your car."
NEVAR! >:O - ElliotTrudeau, on 10/18/2007, -13/+1Macromedia -------> Adobe not "Design Orgasm" == lame
Buried for being gay - idesign, on 10/16/2007, -3/+3This list gives you a frightening look into my world. It's not nice in here.
- xpose, on 10/17/2007, -0/+12It would have been nice if the font to read this article wasn't so small, or at least increase the padding between bullets. Sheeeesh :)
- centran, on 10/17/2007, -0/+3I know you are trying to be funny but small font is exactly what I am dealing with for my Aunt's company. The design team does a beautiful job but the fonts are so small. I can see them. My Aunt can see them. The design team can see them. But we all have good eyes.
It is something I recognize as a flaw but my Aunt and the design team are more about making things "pretty" then functionality. Sometimes designers get too much into the "design" and there are other things to take into consideration.

- jazzmichael, on 10/17/2007, -3/+0I never though that i can be a a hardcore website designer after i read your article. Thank for sharing.
- John370, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4Hopefully, you've never thought of being a writer either...
- picsectionpleez, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2hilarious +1
- John370, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4Hopefully, you've never thought of being a writer either...
- Auto, on 10/26/2007, -0/+26FTA: "You’ve totally slaughtered a great design concept because the client thinks he/she knows best. (everyone thinks they are a designer)"
Personally, this is one thing I will not tolerate. I have dropped entire projects that were near completion because the client's girlfriend's brother thinks he knows better "because he has taken a photoshop class". I may be stubborn, and it may cost me money, but I will not allow a client to jerk me around like that. They hired me to design... if they wanted to design something themselves, they should go purchase a copy of Frontpage and have at it.- ghostz00, on 10/16/2007, -1/+4Frontpage....do they even make that anymore?
- PabloMac, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3Most of my clients prefer Publisher.
- centran, on 10/17/2007, -1/+2I hate Microsoft as much as the next guy but I have got to tell you; Publisher is pretty damn good.
For simple things(large blocks of text with some graphics) I use it all the time. This allows other people to edit it easily who are used to word processors. It is quick and fast.
That being said, for more complicated things it becomes annoying to completely useless.
- centran, on 10/17/2007, -1/+2I hate Microsoft as much as the next guy but I have got to tell you; Publisher is pretty damn good.
- KSUdesigner, on 10/16/2007, -1/+5Unfortunately most of us depend on the paychecks we receive from our clients and can't really afford to tell our clients where they can shove their ideas. I personally believe that the difference between a good designer and a great designer lies within this sitaution. A good designer will tell the client to piss off, but a great designer will incorporate their client's ideas in an aesthetically pleasing way that doesn't entirely compromise their original design.
- monospaced, on 10/17/2007, -1/+2You guys are WEB designers. This article is really aimed at graphic designers.
- Keyser_Soze, on 10/19/2007, -0/+19"You’ve intentionally overbid a project because you can sniff out a bad client from a mile away."
THIS IS THE ONE
Man, I did this on the last job and still got it. Oh, and I should have went higher, client was a nightmare. - rephil513, on 10/17/2007, -1/+8An asterisk goes by 16.) "You’ve totally slaughtered a great design concept because the client thinks he/she knows best. (everyone thinks they are a designer)"---should include---"the client opted for a clipart variation from their Word image folder...."
- centran, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3haha.. clipart. All though I should not laugh cause I use it for small things like sign up sheets that are in house and only out for a week at most.
I have to wonder, is using clipart even legal to use for commercial purposes?- monospaced, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2you, my friend, are not a designer
- centran, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1nah, I am not a professional designer. I do design and can do a decent job; so I am in a designer in that sense but it is not what I do for a living.
I am also lazy and then stuff like clipart happens. Hey, there is a point and some projects where you have to decide how much mental energy you are going to put into it. Things like sign-up sheets do not deserve much of my time.
- centran, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1nah, I am not a professional designer. I do design and can do a decent job; so I am in a designer in that sense but it is not what I do for a living.

- smz414, on 10/17/2007, -1/+2ROFL some of these are true, don't know whether to laugh at myself or with myself...
- monospaced, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1SOME are true? If you really do practice professional design in a high-paced firm, they are all very true, especially the one about meals being interruptions.
- S1lkySm00th, on 10/16/2007, -1/+6You can use keyboard shortcuts at light speed, blindfolded, but you can’t type a paragraph of text without staring at the keyboard.
Classic.- decompyler, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4I personally don't get this one. Is there some sort correlation of the inability to touch type if you have design skills?
- ronin691, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3People that think in pictures don't type ( that's thinking in characters ) - "Charlie don't surf!"
- decompyler, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4I personally don't get this one. Is there some sort correlation of the inability to touch type if you have design skills?
- mikehill33, on 10/26/2007, -1/+23you name all_your_files_with_underscores.
- ravamp3, on 10/18/2007, -0/+1026. You've pushed Photoshops ram capacity to 80% hoping 200mb files save faster.....but, nothing happens.
- gasin, on 10/19/2007, -0/+11Buried for the list is way old. For someone who claims to be a designer, this dude surly does a good job copy and pasting other people's stuff.
So much for originality!- smaisch, on 10/18/2007, -1/+8You missed the irony in your statement. Most designs are recycled, just like the article. :P
- chubbybunny, on 10/16/2007, -0/+5Did that rollover noise scare the ***** out of anyone else? I moused over it the first time really quickly (not noticing I had) and it made me jump-- I thought my monitor was going to explode.
Arrrggggg sound on websites :(- karipatila, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1So that sound did come from a rollover... That reminds me to thank Thomas Fuchs for including mp3s for sound effects in scriptaculous 1.8.
- graviplana, on 10/26/2007, -0/+13"400x330concept_11b_final_newfont3_LATEST-6_!!!USETHISONE!!!_2.psd"
AfterawhileIjuststoppedevenusingunderscoresunlessitgoesoutviaemail:) I've actually named a file "...USETHISONE.*" haha.- ronin691, on 10/26/2007, -0/+9400x330concept_11b_final_newfont3_LATEST-6_!!!USETHISONE!!!_2_NO_SRSLY_THIS_IS THE_LAST_ONE.psd
- tanvir69d0n, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2"You can use keyboard shortcuts at light speed, blindfolded, but you can’t type a paragraph of text without staring at the keyboard."
I thought I am the only one... - HouseFan, on 10/18/2007, -1/+8"Hey, look at me! I use Photoshop. I'm a designer!!"
You find that a lot on the web.- mikehill33, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2just use the < blink > tag instead.
- solid12345, on 10/18/2007, -1/+2Ain't that the truth. True designers use Illustrator and Indesign/Quark as primary tools and photoshop as an accessory.
- monospaced, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2100% True. Designers use Photoshop for color-correcting images, or creating digital comps and ***** jpegs for clients.
- lookbehindu, on 10/17/2007, -0/+5You’ve had “Software Nightmares,” when you’ve been working way too much.
getting attacked by brushes, command lines, text, numbers, and others in my nightmares are always a sign to me that i should add a "pain and suffering" tax into projects. - loosebooty, on 10/17/2007, -1/+2This list is genius.
- cakeeating, on 10/17/2007, -0/+5The original, made popular 184 days ago (barely 6 months - are you kidding me?!), with 4 times as many Diggs and from a much, much nicer website that publishes great original content and free vectors and stuff - not some ad-riddle piece of crap copy/pasting robo-blog: http://digg.com/design/25_Reasons_You_Might_Be_A_H ...
- cakeeating, on 10/26/2007, -0/+5link got screwed up - here it is: http://tinyurl.com/24krz5
- HeavyWave, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2I must say that my eyes hurt after reading that. I mean font color and background are too bad for eyes.
- plachenko, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2Well, I have to give the author credit... they listed the "Soruce" of the ORIGINAL LIST at the bottom of the website... you know, the list that "they" came up with...
- GaffleSnipe, on 10/26/2007, -0/+3Yeah, it's still copyright infringement even if you list the source because they copied my entire article. Oh, and they edited the first paragraph a bit to fit their site. Their contact page has gone missing. . I can't even email them even though I'm pretty pissed right now.
- dustedotnet, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2http://www.bittbox.com/rants/25-reasons-you-might- ...
- archivist, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1actually, a lot of great designers don't have a huge font collection. sometimes, they only use a few font families... and one of them: "HELVETICA"
- solid12345, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1Helvetica is the result of the peak of human evolution, all projects should use Helvetica, it is your god font.
- monospaced, on 10/21/2007, -1/+2Helvetica Neue
- britno03, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1Helvetica is a cop out font, it should die a slow and painful death! I hate it almost as much as I hate comic sans, and that's ALOT!
- tigerpaper, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1or microsoft's bastard helvetica: Arial
- solid12345, on 10/17/2007, -2/+0If any of you designers want a laugh checkout this project on someone's portfolio site
http://lorrencargill.com/images/exploration_suppor ...
Recognize that photo anywhere windows users? - Appleologist, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2not very compliant for a "hardcore web designer"...
http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww ... - zszaiss, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1dustedotnet has it right - and the original article was also dugg: http://digg.com/design/25_Reasons_You_Might_Be_A_H ...
Not only is this article poorly attributed to the original, but it also cuts out the a couple sentences so it can start with "I came up with this list..." - which the author clearly didn't. Burying for unoriginal, improperly attributed content... - Forgotten, on 10/26/2007, -0/+2Buried for copying another's original and taking credit.
- rmayo87, on 10/26/2007, -0/+2ditto
