Try This Experiment While Sitting at Your Desk
i262.photobucket.com — A funny little brain trick which actually works. Try it!
- 3872 diggs
- digg it
- keshavkhera, on 01/28/2008, -7/+65Man, This is weird!!
- NaziHatinChimp, on 01/28/2008, -3/+5Try doing each index finger on each hand in different clockwise or counter clockwise motions.
- heypetray, on 01/28/2008, -2/+22Prepare yourself for the inevitable "This is lame, I did it on my first try!!!1" posts...
- Cruzifix, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1I'm kinda amazed that so many people on Digg can do this...
I have used this trick to get free beers many times in bars, by betting people they couldn't do it, and well, so far nobody could do it, even instrument players!
I think that people here are just doing it once.
You have to continue to make circles with your right hand and with your right foot continue to make circles in
the opposite direction...
Can you guys then still do it?
If so, YOU GUYS ARE FREAKS!- vol872791, on 01/31/2008, -0/+1I guess I'm a freak...
- Cruzifix, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1I'm kinda amazed that so many people on Digg can do this...
- DarkDx, on 01/29/2008, -3/+21This is lame, I did it on my first try!!!1
- 15thPD, on 01/29/2008, -11/+4This is lame, I did it on my first try!!!1
- connorwilson, on 01/29/2008, -19/+5C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER?
- koicho, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1Wow! Same comment different diggs!
- 15thPD, on 01/29/2008, -11/+4This is lame, I did it on my first try!!!1
- heypetray, on 01/28/2008, -2/+22Prepare yourself for the inevitable "This is lame, I did it on my first try!!!1" posts...
- Myonosken, on 01/28/2008, -2/+69Perhaps having good limb independence affects this? I play drums and guitar which may explain why I didn't change direction.
- DeathRay2K, on 01/28/2008, -1/+23I didn't either and I also play the drums...
- Rozenrot, on 01/28/2008, -1/+18I play drums too, I can also do this easily, Figures.
- unreg, on 01/28/2008, -1/+79I spank the monkey a lot, worked for me
- Calloused, on 01/29/2008, -3/+11Me too. But oddly, it only works if I have my left thumb up my @%$
- CabesMojo, on 01/28/2008, -0/+20I don't play the drums, but I beat the hell out of my desk like I do when a good song comes on my ipod in my office, and I had no problem with this.
- Recuso, on 01/29/2008, -0/+28So you're the annoying person who keeps pounding on his desk indiscriminately, aha!
- phauna, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2Juggler here, I can also do it.
- rspeed, on 01/28/2008, -0/+10This might be key. Another drummer who had no difficulty doing it.
- SLYK, on 01/28/2008, -3/+2play bass/guitar and i switched..
- Myonosken, on 01/29/2008, -6/+7Guitar doesn't really require feet independence.
- SLYK, on 01/29/2008, -1/+6You mentioned guitar....
- HBNDonut, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2Unless you use loads of crazy distortion and effects pedals...
- Myonosken, on 01/29/2008, -6/+7Guitar doesn't really require feet independence.
- mortigon, on 01/28/2008, -0/+107I ate Subway today AND stayed at a Holiday Inn... I still couldn't do it.
- RubberBinder, on 01/29/2008, -4/+4well played sir, well played
- PirateMLifnen, on 01/29/2008, -0/+32Shoulda' had a V8.
- trunkster, on 01/28/2008, -0/+37I don't play the drums or any instrument.. when I first started drawing the six I felt something a little weird but I didn't change directions with my foot. Maybe I'm good at the drums now...
- RedS0x, on 01/28/2008, -0/+1I play guitar, but I don't have any pedals...but I did do it.
- someuser90, on 01/29/2008, -3/+1I can jerk off with either hand, which meant I could do this ez pz, and much faster than any of yous, so nah
- iperalta, on 01/29/2008, -1/+0so can i...do it with both hands...haha...
- LennyX, on 01/29/2008, -0/+7I use my feet.
- vuke69, on 01/29/2008, -0/+14I use LennyX's feet too.
- prol, on 01/29/2008, -4/+1I used to play drums. Took me 3 tries.
- norcalscan, on 01/29/2008, -2/+3jazz percussionist here (one step above "drummer" but not as high as a jazz flutist) and I didn't change direction.
- phronko, on 01/29/2008, -0/+10I suck at drums in Rock Band and can't do it. Theory confirmed.
- Navicerts, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Played drums, can do it.
- keenfrenzy, on 01/29/2008, -0/+0I dunno, I've played drums for 12 years, piano for 18 and guitar/bass for 10 and I still can't do it after 10+ tries. I get close, but the circle turns into more of a parabola.
- DeathRay2K, on 01/28/2008, -1/+23I didn't either and I also play the drums...
- ligyron, on 01/28/2008, -1/+91Does it work? I want to try it but I'm too lazy to lift my right foot
- AntzNZ, on 01/28/2008, -3/+43Comment abuse: While sitting at your desk, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles, now, while doing this draw the number "6" in the air with your right hand; your foot will change direction and theres nothing you can do about it.
- unreg, on 01/28/2008, -3/+7Thanks for the summary.
- DarkDx, on 01/29/2008, -1/+18SPOILERS!!!!
- fakeid781, on 01/29/2008, -1/+25which way is clockwise
- Daniel591992, on 01/29/2008, -0/+15oh god...
- MadOtaku, on 01/29/2008, -1/+4↻
edit: sorry the character is so small. If you can't see it, copy paste into a text editor; if you don't know what to do from there, you're beyond hope ;)
- unreg, on 01/28/2008, -3/+7Thanks for the summary.
- fratdaddy, on 01/28/2008, -1/+24Say "Biggie Smalls" 3 times
- iperalta, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1only works if u do it in the restroom...

- chaoswings, on 01/28/2008, -3/+17I must be abnormal I can do it no problem....
On another note why is it a pic instead of text?- Navicerts, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1would it have been dugg if it linked to am html page?
- Icyfenix, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Actually, this is a picture from a blog by the guy who was in the big lebowski. It was featured on cracked like last week.
- bitcloud, on 01/29/2008, -1/+18works even better on christian friends when you tell them to write "666" in the air....
they think they're posessed - Archeologist, on 01/29/2008, -19/+2Mirror in case the site goes down.
http://i26.tinypic.com/2rm5frc.gif- Archeologist, on 01/29/2008, -1/+1That's what I thought was going to happen.
- RoshanK, on 01/29/2008, -2/+5|WARNING| his mirror is a gif with goatse and tubgirl pics.
and Archeologist, burn in hell. plus you spelled your damn name wrong.- Archeologist, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Thank you mr obvious.
- GeorgeClayton, on 01/29/2008, -1/+1Maybe I'm really coordinated, or uncordinates, but it didn't do anythign for me, except make me look like a complete idiot.
- NaziHatinChimp, on 01/28/2008, -3/+5Try doing each index finger on each hand in different clockwise or counter clockwise motions.
- kazimierczuk, on 01/28/2008, -4/+477You can do something about it, draw the six from the inside.
- Vowieotw, on 01/28/2008, -0/+47I usually draw a 6 from the inside so at first I thought I was immune from the mind trick.
- joshuaer, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1are you left handed i make my six's the same way i found that a lot of left handed people do that?
- Vowieotw, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1no, i'm right handed. drawing 6s always seemed more comfortable when drawing from the inside
Also, I ride snowboards Goofy (right foot in front) which I'm told is unusual for right-footed people- joshuaer, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1ya it is that is why the call it goofy foot! but goofy foot snowboarders are the best!
- CorwinShiu, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1Maybe you are ambidexterous. I am also left footed (starting blocks, the right block is in front for track), but right handed for writing.
- ElbertF, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2I don't, I'm left handed too.
- Vowieotw, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1no, i'm right handed. drawing 6s always seemed more comfortable when drawing from the inside
- joshuaer, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1are you left handed i make my six's the same way i found that a lot of left handed people do that?
- bstew22, on 01/28/2008, -0/+10there's always an exception...
- irgeorge, on 01/28/2008, -0/+26Genius.
- Chrino, on 01/29/2008, -8/+3I'm not having any trouble at all. I can also draw counterclockwise circles continuously while making clockwise foot circles.
I have also mastered the art of rotating one hand away from my chest in circles and the other one towards me, rotating around the other hand (in the opposite direction). So I guess if you can do one the other is simple.- vuke69, on 01/29/2008, -0/+12"I have also mastered the art of rotating one hand away from my chest in circles and the other one towards me, rotating around the other hand (in the opposite direction)."
Dude, are you a masturbation savant or something? - allisonmd, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Nope. Just a liar.
- vuke69, on 01/29/2008, -0/+12"I have also mastered the art of rotating one hand away from my chest in circles and the other one towards me, rotating around the other hand (in the opposite direction)."
- stackered, on 01/29/2008, -0/+11Just don't try to draw a 7. It'll be the end of mankind.
- Rikm, on 01/29/2008, -0/+4Try drawing a C then or a G, or do you write those from the middle too?
I'm left handed. I can do this with my left side but not right, interesting. - evanct, on 01/29/2008, -1/+0yeah, that works, but only because when you draw the 6 from the inside both your foot and your finger are doing a clockwise motion.
that's why it's better to just say "move your foot in a clockwise circle and move your finger in a counter-clockwise circle." don't know why they both with the "draw a 6" thing. - fusion5, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1This is one of those tests that makes us feel better about ourselves for achieving the seemingly impossible! :)
- Vowieotw, on 01/28/2008, -0/+47I usually draw a 6 from the inside so at first I thought I was immune from the mind trick.
- brjohnson789, on 01/28/2008, -15/+524I tried it a bunch and got fired. That's cause I drive a forklift, and I stapped some dude w/ it accidetally. Thanks digg!
- smithil, on 01/28/2008, -0/+45you should have carved him into a figure 6.
- joshuastarr, on 01/28/2008, -0/+30So that's what you're doing now, Scott Stapp. Driving a forklift. Righteous!
- twiztidsinz, on 01/28/2008, -3/+5I lol'd
Dugg for being one of the few who will remember Scott "I'm A Huge Douchebag and ran away from FRED DURST of all people" Stapp- HunterSeeker42, on 01/28/2008, -3/+3Hey, you got to give Creed credit -- they are at least better than Limp Bizkit and maybe even Nickelback.
- vuke69, on 01/29/2008, -1/+2Creed sucks.
- twiztidsinz, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Both WERE better than what they became.
But Stapp just sucked all around
- jjremy, on 01/28/2008, -0/+3That's REALLY not saying very much.
- Klinky, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Stapp is too busy assaulting his wife with fruit genitialia...
"Stapp has since been ordered not to come into contact with his wife or enter their home in western Boca Raton, FL[3] except to use the "recording studio." This restriction was placed as a condition of his release from the Palm Beach County Jail for allegedly assaulting his wife by throwing a bottle of Orangina within inches of her face.[4]"
- HunterSeeker42, on 01/28/2008, -3/+3Hey, you got to give Creed credit -- they are at least better than Limp Bizkit and maybe even Nickelback.
- rspeed, on 01/28/2008, -1/+3Man I hate Creed. They headlined a music festival I went to once.
- twiztidsinz, on 01/28/2008, -3/+5I lol'd
- yohnkrb, on 01/28/2008, -2/+206Forget the whole 6 thing. You were driving a forklift while surfing Digg?
- ivanisavich, on 01/28/2008, -11/+5Lol...exactly what I was about to ask :O
- benguild, on 01/28/2008, -5/+4***** yeah. You have never done that?!
- ClavinJ, on 01/29/2008, -11/+2no ***** sucker
- Cobbmachine, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2I do it all the time. *forklift simulator XII* That counts right?
- Istrancis, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Ever played Shenmue? Oh yeah!
"Time for our daily warm up race. On your marks, get set... almost time to go."
Wow, that seems so familiar six years later!
- Istrancis, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Ever played Shenmue? Oh yeah!
- ivanisavich, on 01/28/2008, -11/+5Lol...exactly what I was about to ask :O
- theangrybaby, on 01/28/2008, -0/+57Damn those forklifts and their wireless internet capabilities! *Shakes fist in the air*
- Narcism, on 01/28/2008, -1/+54I use a laptop while driving a forklift too!
- shawn1122, on 01/28/2008, -0/+54You two should hook up.
- AcidBurnz, on 01/28/2008, -0/+36And start your own forklift driving firm, since you're both jobless now :D
- shawn1122, on 01/28/2008, -0/+54You two should hook up.
- mrdiggdude, on 01/29/2008, -22/+2you idiot, how do you drive a forklift without a right foot, most modern ones stop pretty quickly after you take your foot off the accelerater
- elementfire, on 01/29/2008, -0/+20If you run after the joke, you might still catch it. It went that-a-way. --->
- mmortal03, on 01/29/2008, -0/+14You have a desk on your forklift?
- dinobot, on 01/29/2008, -0/+12StaplerFahrer Klaus?
- DiddyWolf, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Darn, someone beat me to it.
- getisboy, on 01/29/2008, -4/+2you read digg on your forklift?
- jdhoover, on 01/29/2008, -2/+7Scary - has digg ever been sued for workplace injuries?
- kristenmunson, on 01/28/2008, -3/+17Love it. That is totally weird but it is right on!
- AmazingAndrex, on 01/28/2008, -0/+8Didn't work for me after I started concentrating.
- PleaseJustDie, on 01/28/2008, -0/+7I failed the first try but my second try I could keep my right foot going right while I made a 6 in the air with my right hand.
- soniasimone, on 01/28/2008, -13/+6hee hee, freaky!
- Kanidia, on 01/29/2008, -3/+2Wow "hee hee, freaky" gets dugg down, and "Totally FREAKY!" gets dugg up. Seriously, some people need to honestly reflect on why they are digging up and down someone's comment, and not just look at the number of diggs, and follow the trend. And seriously, don't digg every comment you can find, there is no point. Some comments are just better left alone, if you don't have an honest opinion.
- FoxOrian, on 01/29/2008, -0/+4I get the mental image of you sitting in a corner trying this all day with a big :D smile on your face, going "hee hee" every time your foot reverses direction.
Scary, man.
- levitron, on 01/28/2008, -4/+36Dammit!
- rentmitchum, on 01/29/2008, -1/+1Also, son of a bitch!
- BrettFromTibet, on 01/28/2008, -7/+10Totally FREAKY!
- HPMNick, on 02/01/2008, -0/+0The only way to get this to work is to do the motion at the right time. If you pick the right point, it will feel totally natural, and you will just be able to do it.
- Monkeydew06, on 02/01/2008, -0/+1That's what she said!
Dang it.. I'ma get dug down for this.
- Monkeydew06, on 02/01/2008, -0/+1That's what she said!
- HPMNick, on 02/01/2008, -0/+0The only way to get this to work is to do the motion at the right time. If you pick the right point, it will feel totally natural, and you will just be able to do it.
- homerowedasdf, on 01/28/2008, -16/+278didnt work for me
- Insuperabilis, on 01/28/2008, -4/+26Well depending on how you draw 6, it wouldn't work. Most people draw 6 starting from the top and then going all the way down and making a counterclockwise circle. But, if you draw a 6 by starting at the middle and making a clockwise circle and then going up, the direction would match the direction your foot is making and thus you would be able to draw that 6 and move your leg clockwise at the same time.
- pyro789x, on 01/28/2008, -0/+29I started at the top and went counter-clockwise with the 6, as you suggested. It still didn't do anything for me.
- bstew22, on 01/28/2008, -1/+5thanks bill nye
- ORMEs, on 01/28/2008, -2/+0http://excusemebill.ytmnd.com/
- mclewell, on 01/28/2008, -0/+2this is also true for me.
- Orbitrix, on 01/28/2008, -2/+3im a drummer and have extremely good coordination in hands and legs, often doing dis-similar motions with them.. perhaps this is why it hasnt worked for me?
- bobbydiamondz, on 01/29/2008, -0/+4Didn't work for me either. I play piano. Maybe the hand & foot dissociation involved with playing some musical instruments has something to do with it.
- Phatt138, on 01/29/2008, -0/+5I think you're probably right, bobby. I'm a guitarist and it didn't work for me either, and as you said, probably has something to do with training your hands and feet to act independently.
- anotherjeff, on 01/29/2008, -1/+7And i play the triangle and it didn't work for me either.
- Barryke, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1Doesn't work for me either.
YAY! I'm slightly more unique than most of you. Same goes for every minority, i know, i know.
- airwalkery2k, on 01/28/2008, -4/+8I think I managed to do the impossible. But now my foot really hurts.
- MasterGrief, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Half of you are burying him for being better than you--the other half are digging him for hurting himself.
Balance has been attained!- MasterGrief, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Balance lost :(
- MasterGrief, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Half of you are burying him for being better than you--the other half are digging him for hurting himself.
- pyro789x, on 01/28/2008, -0/+9I've also just drawn clockwise circles with my hand while drawing a 6 with my foot.
- bitterjack, on 01/29/2008, -0/+0wow. that's pretty awesome.. I trained awhile to override the former effect with ease.. but drawing 6's with my food is damn hard.
- boxybrzown, on 01/28/2008, -0/+18You're a Replicant. Sorry.
- Daggity, on 01/29/2008, -0/+6But all these photos!
- Katana314, on 01/29/2008, -0/+3The photos, the memories...they're someone else's.
- NorrisTwithman, on 01/29/2008, -0/+3I'm sorry, but we're forced to retire you.
- MindTrigger, on 01/28/2008, -1/+12Didn't work for me either. I had no problem. I happen to have extreme hand-eye coordination from decades of gaming though, so I probably don't count.
- AmICoolNow, on 01/29/2008, -0/+3It's hand-foot coordination, not hand-eye.
- lolwutpear, on 01/29/2008, -0/+6You think decades of gaming is unusual? Welcome to Digg.
- stephant, on 01/29/2008, -0/+3I wonder if it has something to do with being right or left handed. I'm left handed (well, I write left handed) and I had no trouble at all doing it. Are you folks that could do it easily left handed as well?
- hellotyler, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Good theory, i'm left handed and this was a synch.
- fhornplayer, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1I'm right handed and did it easily, with all variations.
- Skor459, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Trying it with my left foot, this happened to me since I'm right handed. I had trouble circling in the first place without hand motions since my ankle was cracking and skipping, but I guess it works for your non-dominant hand most.
- s0nicfreak, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1I'm ambidextrous... if I "write" the 6 with my right hand my foot turns the other way, if I write it with my left it doesn't.
- LuxFX, on 01/29/2008, -0/+12It took a little concentration, but I was able to override the effect. Certainly not in the realm of "there's nothing you can do about it"
- TBorachio, on 01/29/2008, -3/+0There's nothing you can do about it, lets just leave it at that shall we?
- Animan351, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Didn't work for me either, I'm a lefty so I tried it with my right side, left side, and cross and could do all no prob.
Must be the superiority of the left handedness, were just better at everything :) - lp66, on 01/29/2008, -0/+5Yeah, I play the organ and it's no problem. I'd think if you play drums you'd be fine, too.
- DewKnight, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Tried drawing from the top and middle. Didn't happen for me. Right handed
- nabilanwar, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2man, i wanted this to work, wuddahell.
- Hangly, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2I my foot doesn't change direction when I do it on my right side, but it does when I do it on the left side.
Does that mean I'm left-handed and didn't know it?- xboxandtrumpet, on 01/29/2008, -0/+0No,you are left footed
- project3005, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2Yeah, it seems that if you've ever been involved with an instrument or activity that required independent movement of your two hands (and/or feet), this is unlikely to work for you.
I play the guitar and the sensation feels similar to strumming a song, you've got the side with the simpler task operating almost by itself. - sjm20k, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1yeah doesn't work for me either for some reason - i play the guitar, but i don't see how that has anything to do w/ hand-foot link
- Kanidia, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2This doesn't work for me. I play piano, for those who really want to know. Then again, I have always been able to draw circles with my left hand and squares with the other, etc.
- playaj20008, on 01/29/2008, -0/+3I think it only works for the dominant side. I'm left handed and I can do the above easily, but if I attempt the same with my left foot and arm all hell breaks loose.
- fred13snow, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1I remember it used to work a couple years back. But I got it first try this time... Must be what all those calculus classes are for!
- alexandermiller, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1Doesn't work for me at all. I play piano/guitar, but I really dont think that has anything to do with it...

It's a lot like trying to rotate your two arms in opposite directions. It can happen, but it takes some practice.

- noctem314, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1I think you're missing the point. The challenge is in drawing counter-clockwise with your hand while clockwise with your foot. They just said "draw a 6" to make it easy to understand. So basically you're just not really attempting it.

- darkane, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2I know it's hard to understand for somebody that strictly buries stories out of spite and anger because their parents didn't hug them enough when they were young, but there's this button that says 'digg' relatively close to the one that says 'bury'. When lots and lots of people hit the 'digg' button, the story becomes 'popular'. Then the story is automatically placed on the front page of the website. I know, it's pretty unbelievable, right? But it's totally true!
