Change a Light Bulb, Save the World? Yes and No.
sustainablog.org — People give you this whole rap about how easy saving the planet is. Change a light bulb and save the world. Yes and no. How about we consider it a start rather than an end destination? Simran Sethi and Sarah Smarsh "look into the light": the CFL...

- DrJG, on 07/20/2008, -0/+7Absolutely, yes of course it is a beginning, or a step somewhere on the way, not the be all and so forth of ecological awareness. But it is easy, necessary and high time.
We have used them for well over a decade now and one only has to take care to use the right amount - don't use a ten watt for reading, try twenty, for example, while a low watt might be enough for low lighting for late evening quiet hours. - sustainablogger, on 07/20/2008, -0/+7Recycling CFLs (one of the downsides in terms of convenience) has gotten easier now that Home Depot's taking them back (along with IKEA)... if we just get Wal-Mart into the game...
- Bukowsky, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Starting the CFL recycling program was a very wise decision on the part of Home Depot, just because I can think of at least 6 or 7 Home Depots between here & the closest Ikea. Just think of all the people that will go there, just to drop of a few CFL's & end up buying something... like, more CFL's.
- hiPpymIck, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1ive read you shouldnt fit cfls where theyll get switched on and off a lot eg bathroom
..apparently they dont last very well- grumpyrain, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1I have CFLs in every light and lamp fitting in our unit except the bathroom 3-in-1 light/heater/fan where they physically won't fit.
We have had to replace just one; in 3.5 years, so I think I can safely debunk the 'they don't last very well' argument.

- neognostic, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1I installed dimmers on 8 of the 12 switches in my house 8 years ago when I bought my house, (I like low light levels) and CFLs don't work in them, I have installed CFLs on the other 4 switches that don't have dimmers. Hopefully I will be able to dim diodes in the near future.
