- AmyVernon, on 10/11/2008, -1/+25Maybe this is Mother Nature's way of telling us we shouldn't build on hillsides.
Mother Nature's a bitch.- DeskFlyer, on 10/11/2008, -6/+6This type of story is akin to people who keep building homes in fire/tornado/hurricane/major earthquake zones and wonder why their pads keep getting destroyed. Do I feel sorry for them? Nope. It's like people think the environment, which established itself millions, if not billions of years ago, should somehow be subordinate to them or something. If nature wrecks your *****, tough luck. Do I own a house in Salina Kansas instead of Milwaukee Wisconsin? No. Why? You take a guess.
- siszam, on 10/11/2008, -3/+4Please tell me one place where you are absolutely safe from natural disasters. You can't.
A brief search on Milwaukee shows:
Heatwave moralities
Severe snow and ice events
Tornadoes
Hail
High wind events
Floods - rainierbeer, on 10/11/2008, -4/+2million if not billions of of years ago... oregon didn't ever exist a 30 million years ago. let alone a billion.

- Velocity14, on 10/11/2008, -1/+16Dear Portland,
I love you dearly with your beautiful autumn weather (rain and shine), your wonderfully quirky atmosphere, and your bountiful supply of adventures right outside the door...
...but you gotta stop with the landslides. Consider it, 'kay? - manzplan, on 10/11/2008, -2/+17build on an hill... expect gravity..
what is 911 supposed to do? lol- Croecop, on 10/11/2008, -5/+6lol omg wtf lawlz
Shut the ***** up - netdroid9, on 10/11/2008, -1/+10Gravity is clearly a threat to the american way of life, we should track it down, throw it in guantanamo and throw away the key.
- Reziarfg, on 10/11/2008, -1/+6I think, with a strong, patriotic will. The United States can overcome this menace.
May the war on gravity begin! And anyone who says otherwise hates America. - roebeet, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1My friends, I can fix this - I've worked on dealing with gravity all my life. "That one" wants to sit down and talk with gravity, but that is dangerous, my friends. I won't stop until we have a clear victory against gravity.
(Palin in the background) "And let me tell ya', I don't like the sound of Obama pallin' around with gravity, don't ya' know?"

- nascentia, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4Wow...that's actually the full transcript, ha. That's awesome.
- siszam, on 10/11/2008, -1/+3That's okay. 9/ll changed everything.
- 471776, on 10/11/2008, -0/+49/2? Are you using roman numerals? Why "II" instead of "11"?
- GawtMilk, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1One of those "in the building" calls reminds me of the guy who was inside the South Tower, on the phone with 911, up until it fell down. Kevin Cosgrove was his name. It's always scary to hear / see the event happening from the close up perspective. We often see a landslide and the after effects, but hearing it in person is that much scarier.
- shagg187, on 10/11/2008, -0/+15You mean 911...
- SilverSpoon, on 10/11/2008, -1/+3lol, towards the end I felt like I was watching the onion with some of the interviews.
- GordonFree, on 10/11/2008, -1/+2"I get stock!"
- seltaeb4, on 10/11/2008, -1/+3The call are coming from inside the house! Arrrrgh!

- BikerDude69, on 10/11/2008, -1/+13Dug for the richie chick admitting it is only material and all the people are OK!
- mjl5629, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4I was also impressed.
- paperclips4u, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3She seemed a bit perplexed by herself admitting it. "It's all silly material stuff, riiigggghhhttt?"
- linagee, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1"We'll just ask the bank for a new house."
- Touchdown, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1She was kind of hot in her moment of grief too.
- mjl5629, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4I was also impressed.
- audomatix, on 10/11/2008, -1/+4That is awful. I really hope they have good insurance and everyone is ok.
- mjl5629, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1oops......
- shagg187, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3It's just silly material stuff, right?
- rainierbeer, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3the home was not insured for landslides, few are. homeowners insurance doesn't cover it and in the places it is available the cost is typically quite prohibitive.
- flyingclutchman, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3What DOES homeowners insurance cover?
- yaddayaddayoda, on 10/11/2008, -0/+2Nothing. It pays for the CEO salary at AIG.
If you try to do a claim on your homeowner's insurance for anything these days (a broken window, for example) they will drop you like a hot potato.
- Muramasa007, on 10/11/2008, -1/+4Wilson must've broken his cane again...
- jrkagan, on 10/11/2008, -0/+2Ha! But I wonder how many people will actually get that reference.
- Denelson83, on 10/11/2008, -1/+1Video doesn't play for me.
- diblasio, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1Thanks for sharing, sport!
- mjl5629, on 10/11/2008, -0/+5*****' thing sucks!
- richlw, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1Play it live?
- SanAhn, on 10/11/2008, -1/+3Dugg for incomprehensible woman at 1:00.
- Dylson, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3I live in Portland. All I can say is this winter should be interesting.
- rainierbeer, on 10/11/2008, -1/+2I wouldn't worry about it, this was not rain related, there will be a story about how there was a broken pipe on the property. There simply has not been enough rain to cause this.
- Aurabolt, on 10/11/2008, -2/+39/11 != 911
- Virgule, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3indeed. 9/11 = 0.8181818181818181818181818...
:c)
- Virgule, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3indeed. 9/11 = 0.8181818181818181818181818...
- rainierbeer, on 10/11/2008, -0/+2Actually the geologists investigating this slide believe that the relatively recent rain has nothing to do with this slide because the soil on the surrounding lots has a low moisture content. The slide was likely the result of a broken/leaky water piper or sewer that saturated the soil under this home. Too bad you can buy landslide insurance.
- paperclips4u, on 10/11/2008, -1/+1This reminds me of the people that build their homes on sandbars in Florida and don't expect their house to be demolished during the first hurricane. Is there anyone out there that still thinks critically?
- AaronCo, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1Sure, the ppl that sell the sandbars. They know someone's stupid enough to buy em.

- fadingsignal, on 10/11/2008, -1/+2I like the part where the over-emotional neighbor who wasn't involved breaks down to tears and starts questioning life and materialism on camera.
- johnroth, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3It's just silly material things, right?
- HyphySoul, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1Uhh...not the right time maybe but...that first chick was kinda hot...
just saying... - vidar808, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3Mirror
http://www.kptv.com/video/17662692/index.html - hyperfujisawa, on 10/11/2008, -0/+2I live like 3blocks from this house. Helicopters were circling allllll day.
- MaxMWood, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3Their houses were made out of wood? Is that normal in the USA? (No houses in the UK are made of wood)
- yaddayaddayoda, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3On the east coast of the USA, you have a mixture of wood and brick and stone houses. In the middle part of the country, wood was scarce and expensive, so they typically used to build with stone and brick, with only a few wood houses. On the west coast, wood is inexpensive and abundant, so almost all the houses are wood. This story takes place in Oregon (on the west coast), about 20 miles from my house.
- hyperfujisawa, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3I'd say most houses in the US are made out of wood.
- yaddayaddayoda, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1I'd say you're right, except in tornado/hurricane country.
- MaxMWood, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1So im guessing wood houses dont really have any foundations of concrete, or anything at all if they can just slide down a hill?
- andreo, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1I was kinda thinking the same thing. But I have seen video and photos of houses being swept off their foundations. I would have to guess that the same thing happened here. So it's not so much the ground under it gave way but actually the ground behind the house pushed it.
- agentmedia, on 10/11/2008, -0/+2Days after home was foreclosed
- redrighthand, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1there are 7 other houses that have been evacuated on that same hillside.
- bikingshaun, on 10/11/2008, -0/+2This has got to be the first time weather.com has ever appeared on Digg!
- whoreable, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1We're not in Kansas anymore!
- DulcetTone, on 10/11/2008, -0/+0Wheeeeee!

- tawnee, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1yeah i watched the whole video, too. super lame.
