Harness a Volcano to Power Your Town
cleantechnica.com — Great Balls of Geothermal Fire! Everyone knows that volcanoes have plenty of heat to spare, and normally we prefer that they keep it to themselves. Now, with energy prices rising, some communities are starting to reconsider their rumbling neighbors.

- sustainablogger, on 07/07/2008, -0/+13I'd think Hawaii could power itself almost completely on volcano power... very cool!
- ruddy, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1thats what SHE said!
- andruslinda, on 07/07/2008, -1/+3It's an interesting solution, but how would strap the valcano and power of it, when the lava is so hot it would melt anything in its earthly way? I t destroys anything in its way of delivery.
- aki009, on 07/07/2008, -0/+5Steam. Pump water to where the ground is hot enough (but not molten) and you get steam out. Use the steam to turn turbines.
- aircool00, on 07/07/2008, -0/+15The time is now
- DrSnugglebunny, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1The mime is tau.
- FuryOfThor, on 07/07/2008, -0/+7a good investment-until it erupts.
- IglooBurner, on 07/07/2008, -1/+0Now would be a good time to buy volcano insurance.
- HaMMeReD, on 07/07/2008, -0/+0It would be cool if they could make a volcano reactor that helped alleviate volcano pressure, u know, so that it doesn't erupt. But I wouldn't want to be the guy to pop one of those zits.
- aki009, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2Not to say that geothermal power is bad (in fact, there's a geothermal power plant within a mile of where I live), but... in some cases (likely not many and almost certainly not most), wouldn't the additional cooling that's introduced for power generation purposes tend to increase the likelihood of an explosive eruption in the future by increasing the eruption pressure threshold??
- nshah, on 07/07/2008, -0/+20I tried that exact same thing in my Sim City 2000 city and then a damn alien attacked.
- noahhoward, on 07/07/2008, -1/+1Geothermal, not new, not news.
- ansatsu29, on 07/07/2008, -1/+2Volcanoes here in our country are being tapped for geothermal power. But sad to say, our government lacked the further political will that will make us independent from the good old crude oil.
- Barackalypse, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2Why do I have the feeling my tax dollars will one day pay to rebuild these towns when the volcano eats them?
- FeloniusMonkey, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1It's just money. At least the people can "duck and cover" while the lava swallows up the rest of their village.
- raybury, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2Damn, not enough geothermal power from the local volcano! Ah, wait, the power supply is increasing, yes! With more available current, the A/C kicked on, good! Why is it getting hotter in here? AHHH!!
- Multipurpose, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3I am Andrew Ryan, and I'm here to ask you a question.
- Ramble, on 07/07/2008, -1/+2...Is a man not entitled to the searing hot magma swallowing his family? No says Big Oil, it belongs underground...
- polish97, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2I thought a couple of towns in Italy tried this a long time ago, something about good farm land near the volcano's sides.
I wonder what became of those people... - idavidtang, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2If we harness the power, does that mean it won't erupt anymore?
- DrSnugglebunny, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2To hell with volcanoes! What about harnessing the heat and kinetic energy from >6 billion craps, farts, and pisses every day? That's gotta be a wonderful power source. A toilet that harvests such otherwise wasted thermal and mechanical energy before dumping it down the pipes could power.... well, something. A pinwheel at least; the world at most!
- Geister, on 07/07/2008, -1/+1MojoJoJo comes to mind.
- pezretainer, on 07/07/2008, -1/+0This was actually proposed by Robbie in the Dinosaurs episode "Power Erupts". http://www.tv.com/dinosaurs/power-erupts/episode/6 ...
Not the mama! - Mactrekr, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Yes, I hear Pierce Brosnan is all for Volcano Geothermal energy. Linda Hamilton is waffling on the subject.
- wassim2k, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Stupid title suggests one hipster can do that with $20 in parts from Home Depot.
- CoreyHalliwell, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1The We Say So corporation did this already in 1991.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dinosaurs_(TV_series) - lolcat23, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3This has been done in Iceland for a very long time. Reykjavik is the worlds largest geothermally heated city. Almost all(of not just all) of the houses are heated with water which is heated geothermally. There is so much energy in the system that even alot of our streets are heated as well(to melt snow/ice). Its a closed loop system, so first the water goes to the houses, and on its way back(while its still hot) it runs in lines under the pavement heating it up.
We have a couple of geothermal power plants as well.
Nothing new here. - Khanvalescent, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1Here in Hawaii there was a geothermal push about 15 years ago. Environmentalists (yes you read that correct), retired hippies, and portions of the Hawaiian Sovereignty movement objected for various reasons of varying validity.
- pooty2, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3Volcanoes are great vaporizers.
- timbuktu22, on 07/09/2008, -0/+0Geothermal power does indeed present enormous potential. And not just from “hotspots” like volcanoes. The simple temperature difference that occurs as you move further into the earth can be harnessed by pumping water down and catching the steam that rises up.
It may indeed take 40-50 years for the US to develop it’s full potential, but a report by the Union of Concerned Scientists estimates that 8,000 to 15,000 MW could come online in the next decade. So hopefully we’ll be seeing a lot more of geothermal power generating schemes in the near future.
The report:
