Want to get something free and help the environment too? Join Freecycle
21st-century-citizen.com — The idea is simple. If you have something you want to get rid of, it ’s better to give it to someone else that it is to dump it in a landfill. And if you need to buy something, freecycling gives you an opportunity to get it for free — which not only saves you money, it reduces your environmental impact since you consume less.

- dhadude, on 10/14/2007, -4/+15Its really good that more people are being made aware of Nature conservation.
- Samsong, on 10/15/2007, -12/+2God damn you, hippy.
- MrMidi, on 10/14/2007, -1/+1I agree, another good website for this is http://www.gigoit.org It's like freecycle without the headaches
- neochonetes, on 10/15/2007, -3/+21I think Freecycle would be especially excellent way to recycle old computers and other technology. Don't forget to totally wipe your hard drive. I would imagine that those who live in urban areas would find more in their local area network.
- ggko, on 10/14/2007, -0/+1Even if the hardware is dead you can probably find a taker. (one likely exception: monitors, though I've never really tried.)
I've offered up a number of machines, parts, and software in the past (all were Macs, don't know if that makes a difference,) and they often got pretty quick responses. Some of the people on Freecycle lists do charitable work, putting together working machines to give away. Some just want free junk to tinker with.
Though some are a little clueless (for lack of a better word.) I recently offered a dead, decade old Macintosh, (noting all its issues,) one responder wanted it to give to her son, I imagine for daily use from the sound of her response.

- dcmusicfusion, on 10/14/2007, -3/+8I couldn't agree more. Freecycle is SUCH a great idea!!!
- geezas, on 10/13/2007, -2/+3It is, but I stopped using it about half a year ago because most of the posts are about old baby clothes and other crap ;]
...anything remotely useful for me gets snatched really fast, so you have to work pretty hard for any good free stuff ;D- HHP2K, on 10/13/2007, -2/+2That's true, but every now and then when you think it's hopeless to reply, if you reply anyway you just might get it b/c the other person didn't show up. And even if not, sometimes the person gets back to you telling you it's been taken, which is nice too.
- AK10, on 10/13/2007, -1/+4Also, a "give and you shall receive" attitude will help you get the stuff you really want.
As a side note, I got my wonderful dog on Freecycle and try to give as much back in return!- geezas, on 10/13/2007, -1/+1This is a great idea, I Agree. It provides a good motive to give, not only take. Just look, there is just as many people giving something as taking.
I gave someone an old 21 inch CRT monitor some time ago, and I didn't take anything yet ;]

- carpespasm, on 10/15/2007, -1/+16the free pages on craigslist are also a killer place to get some good stuff from time to time.
- Poolshark19, on 10/14/2007, -3/+4freecycle is great, i have used it many times, getting rid of old things and getting things that are needed.
yahoo groups also has a freecycle listing, if you live in or near military towns, when we pcs to different posts, you cant always take everything. - whatthefu, on 10/14/2007, -14/+2Whoa, awesome. Digg is now a venue for advertising.
- hansonc, on 10/14/2007, -0/+5I thought that was the point of Digg... spamming your crappy blog site
- Juviana, on 10/15/2007, -1/+2It's a free service...why are you whining?
- tehrob, on 10/15/2007, -3/+19Direct link to the site: http://www.freecycle.org/
- scb0825, on 10/14/2007, -0/+1Thank you. Blog spam sucks.
- quakerorts, on 10/14/2007, -2/+7I have gotten a dresser, a printer stand, a sofa and 2 of those plastic pads that go under office chairs, and I have given away a bed, various computer items and some furniture. It's a great pleasure to see a young family pull up in my driveway in a modest car and to see the joy on their faces in getting something they really need for free!
- Zelixy, on 10/14/2007, -9/+2that is awesome... i run a GREEN social network and would like to promote freecycle.... it's http://zelixy.com... this isn't a spam .. i can put it in our featured section ... would love to help out another green organization... keep up the good fight!
- xlar54, on 10/14/2007, -12/+3Freecycle? lol no way... I paid for it, so it's not free. Craigslist or Ebay. Then, the dump. But in broken peices so no one can come along and take it out of the trash... ;)
- DeFex, on 10/14/2007, -1/+7what a mizer!
is your last name mcduck? - herrferret, on 04/03/2008, -2/+6Attitude's like yours are destroying the planet. Idiot.
- teamgwho, on 10/14/2007, -0/+2bear in mind that when you need something, you could've had it for free via freecycle if you weren't such a selfish dick. so you're paying cash for stuff you could have for free. or is that idea lost on you?
- claireskitten, on 10/14/2007, -0/+1I think you're missing the point of offering the items for free in the first place...
- DeFex, on 10/14/2007, -1/+7what a mizer!
- DeFex, on 10/15/2007, -2/+17wal*mart must hate this. even old stuff is better than most of the crap they sell and its free!
- bingobongony, on 10/14/2007, -7/+2I know...the iPods they sell at Walmart are NOTHING like the iPods at other stores. And the Aquafresh toothpaste at Walmart is made with much more inferior ingreditents that the Aquafresh at the supermarket.
- triplehelix, on 10/14/2007, -0/+3lets talk furniture, even a modest stool.
- hansonc, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2yeah but you have to compare it to comparable furniture... like say Ikea
- bingobongony, on 10/13/2007, -1/+0A modeest stool bought at Walmart will be just as good as a modest stool bought at Target, Sears, Ikea, etc. for the same price. Walmart never claimed to be a furniture store.
- MacPrince, on 10/14/2007, -0/+2Toothpaste? I guess it depends on whether it was made in China or not.
Mmmmm...antifreeze!
- triplehelix, on 10/14/2007, -0/+3lets talk furniture, even a modest stool.

- TheZorch, on 10/14/2007, -3/+2I'm a member of the College Park, MA Freecycle group and I got a FREE 21" Sun Microsystems monitor from someone in Arlington, VA on Craigslist.org. Both are equally awesome!
- webcite1, on 10/14/2007, -9/+1Free cycle is run by little groups! If you comment on things said by other group members that offend you..... they kick you out! Party-line bull *****!
- moocow1452, on 10/14/2007, -5/+3Find another group then.
- webcite1, on 10/14/2007, -5/+1They all play their little party line games! That is the point I'm trying to make! NCC,DE is the worst that I have dealt with! Save the dead girl crap on every posting! Jerry Springer *****!
- moocow1452, on 10/14/2007, -5/+3Find another group then.
- HHP2K, on 10/15/2007, -4/+7I've been a part of this for a long time and you do get a lot of great things off of it and you get an opportunity to get rid of the things you don't need in a good way. I've met a lot of great people and had some very interesting conversations with them :) It's networking, as well - you help these people out, and they can help you out. It's one of the best grassroots movements I've ever seen.
- ArrakisDune, on 10/15/2007, -1/+19Even non-working items are good to put on free-cycle.
Last year we had a broken vacuum that was going in the bin. By chance, I put it online. Turns out the guy who collected it also had a non-working, same model. With both of them he was able to combine the parts and get a working one.
Saves money and helps the environment. Just cant loose!- hansonc, on 10/14/2007, -1/+4but can you tighten?
- logiksan, on 10/14/2007, -2/+9I furnished quite a few rooms at my old house with freecycle stuff. Granted, nothing matched, but I'm a dude, so as long as it had a surface to sit on and another to place my beer, it was fine with me.
Viva la freecycle - hansonc, on 10/14/2007, -2/+4burred for not linking to the freecycle.org site instead of another ***** useless blog post
- Richandler, on 10/14/2007, -8/+3It's called Goodwill it's a store and it's been around forever, same with the Salvation Army. The idea has been around well before all this environmental crap.
- PhuzzyDay, on 10/14/2007, -1/+4No, actually, it's called Freecycle.. because no money is involved. You are only out the trouble it takes to arrange pickups.
- purzzzell, on 10/14/2007, -0/+2Don't even got to do that - for anything smaller than furniture, i throw it in a bag or box and leave it on the front step with someone's name on it.
- teamgwho, on 10/14/2007, -2/+3jagoff. it's not like salvation army or goodwill. withn freecycle you stay home, post about it, and whoever wants it comes to you. thats not how it works with gopodwill or freecycle. also9 if you want something, it's free. goodwill and salvation army you pay.
and what does the environment have to do with it? since when does wanting to seeing something useful be used by someone who has a need for it equate with crap?
***** off - ggko, on 10/14/2007, -0/+1I might be mistaken, but Goodwill no longer accepts computer donations. Either disposal issues or Microsoft sending a team of lawyers to say Goodwill needs to buy a new Windows license for each machine they sell, wether or not it includes the original install discs.
- PhuzzyDay, on 10/14/2007, -1/+4No, actually, it's called Freecycle.. because no money is involved. You are only out the trouble it takes to arrange pickups.
- dahamsta, on 10/14/2007, -1/+7Read the Controversies section on Wikipedia before you jump on the bandwagon. The idea is great, the organisation behind it is downright nasty.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Freecycle_Network
(My Yahoo Group was threatened by Freecycle "bosses". I told them to go screw themselves.)
adam- webcite1, on 10/14/2007, -0/+2Same ***** yet another state! Been there! People running the site can and do say what they want! If you diss them they kick you off the site!
- PhuzzyDay, on 10/14/2007, -1/+2Yep- I am in Canada, and I have been involved for a while too. Got a nice vacuum cleaner and 'free-cycled' a vintage keyboard. It's amazing how stuff that may seem pointless can be used by someone. It's a real win-win setup.
Then you have the people posting 'Wanted' items. Sometimes it's great comedy! I've seen people looking for free cars. - soulsolution, on 10/14/2007, -2/+3I've been a 'freecycler' for quite some time now. I have collected and given away a few items. Yes, I agree it's a great concept and a right step towards environment-conservation.
However, the problem with FreeCycle is the way it works. It is tied to Yahoo! Groups and every time someone lists an item an email is sent to you. This results in a cluttered inbox. (Well, of course, I have a rule set up - but still). Instead, it would be great if a regular store-front like website is setup. Users could list their item in predefined categories, upload pics and stuff. Something like what CL does, but in a more refined way. That'd be cool. I understand this requires revenue - for maintenance/operation, but I guess that is trivial.- silentdragoon, on 10/14/2007, -1/+2You can set it to send emails in 3 different ways -- one by one, daily, or not at all. I learned this on the very page on which you register. I agree that a ***** of emails would be awful, but something can be done about it!
- dzknmd1, on 10/14/2007, -0/+0Go to www.Gigoit.org - this site is exactly what you have described.
- HanSolo69, on 10/13/2007, -2/+2oh, i get it, you mean like the "Free" section on Craigslist?
- purzzzell, on 10/13/2007, -1/+0Kinda, but this is an e-mail network, and begging on it isn't discouraged (as long as you don't do it excessively, or use language in regard to financial "need" such as "can't afford")
- teamgwho, on 10/14/2007, -0/+2no, nothing at all like the "free" section on craigslist.
- TC10284, on 10/13/2007, -1/+0I've been a member for a while now. I haven't personally picked up/listed many items, but my family has and it works wonderful!
- webcite1, on 10/14/2007, -1/+2Stop being lazy and take your unwanted junk to the Salvation Army or Goodwill! They will even pick it up at you house! That creates jobs for disabled people and serves a purpose! Local Freecycle Sites are driven by free style little kingdoms that will kick you out if you don't bow to their "Party" line!
- purzzzell, on 10/13/2007, -1/+1My girlfriend mods the local one - we give and get diff. stuff all the time.
Better than tossing :)- webcite1, on 10/14/2007, -3/+1Rape at your front door just might happen! Anyone from anywhere showing up for a whatever! Get it?
- webcite1, on 10/14/2007, -2/+2Freecycle will flood your e-mail in-box with all types of ***** along with spam and Religious Rags! Whom ever runs the local site.....runs you!
- teamgwho, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1*****. I mean I suppose that could happen, but it would be against freecycle rules to do so, and since its non profit as a whole and the local list moderators definately get nothing, whats the point? I say you havent a clue wtf you're talking about. or its spam that came from someone who trolled the list somehow, but it's not due to their sale of their member list.
- webcite1, on 10/14/2007, -1/+1Go on and join dick breath...see what happens when you even touch at the local power holder's turff!
- teamgwho, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1*****. - darlyn, on 10/14/2007, -0/+3Damn, I can't seem to find a free iPhone.
- PhuzzyDay, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1Soon it'll be the BEST place to get the new Britney Spears album!
- coffee200am, on 10/14/2007, -2/+2The Salvation Army stores are great places to get used stuff too and they help the homeless and less fortunate.
http://www.salvationarmyusa.org/usn/www_usn.nsf - peweman, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1I am really like this idea!....get stuff for free and feel good about it too!
- webcite1, on 10/14/2007, -4/+1Go on! Put your name, Email address, phone number and home address online and see what happens via freecycle! Dumb *****!
- atbnet, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1You aren't supposed to put that information in the posting. You only give it to the person that you are giving the item to or they give you theirs if you are picking something up. You can also arrange to meet someplace if you don't want them showing up to your house.
- teamgwho, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1where do you jackasses get your information?
Names are generally not given in a posting.
Telephone #s? rarely
address? Sometimes folks may say XYZ item is outside on the street at 123 Main St, Anytown. Generally thats not the case. all info is given between the person offering the items and the person asking for them. - Juviana, on 10/14/2007, -0/+0Who's the dumb one? Posting personal information on the freecycle network is strongly discouraged. Most people meet somewhere neutral to exchange things if it is convenient...
- webcite1, on 10/14/2007, -0/+1Some freecycle sites do it to you Without one knowing that up front!
- joelm2400, on 10/14/2007, -3/+1This is a great group of people. I just recently received a great free couch.

- MrsButtersworth, on 10/14/2007, -3/+1Any reason why its in French?
- webcite1, on 10/14/2007, -4/+1Freecycle will even tell what you can or can not post based on their own local agenda! After you post an item! Real sick ***** there! I want to see Freecycle shut down and items sent to Goodwill or the Salvation Army!
- teamgwho, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1dumbass, every chapter gets to set its own rules. don't like the groups rules? start your own then or STFU. freecycle is WAY better then the salvation army because if you're selling a) people come to you b) you don't have to leave your house c) it'll get used by people who really want it, whereas wqho knows if it'll just sit in the warehouse at SA for a while. If you're getting something then a) you know it's what you want b) ITS FREE! Salvation Army it is not free c) you can actually make friends doing this. I've gotten to know neighbors and people in my area who I've freecycled with.
- webcite1, on 10/14/2007, -2/+1Another ***** Cult!

- fuelcarddotorg, on 10/14/2007, -0/+4Freecycle is crappy because its run off of yahoo groups. I refuse to use it for that reason
- atbnet, on 10/14/2007, -1/+1Freecycle is great. I've gotten rid of a number of large items that would have been hard to throw away and it saved someone else money because they didn't have to buy it anymore.
- chingy1788, on 10/14/2007, -1/+2if you don't want it anymore sell it on ebay
if it doesn't sell on ebay put it on freecycle
if no one wants it on freecycle chuck it out
any one giving away N64, PS1, SNES, NES, GameBoy gear? (bored in Australia, with a math test tomorrow) - FeelMyApathy, on 10/14/2007, -1/+0In the year or two I've been using FreeCycle, I've gotten several computers, a motorcycle (yes, a motorcycle; an older fixer-upper, but complete), some great old radios (I sort of collect them, got a 1946 portable and a nice 1942 console), a Robosapien, and countless other things. I've also found good homes for appliances, furniture and baby items. Crappy link but dug for the goodness that is FreeCycle
- webcite1, on 10/14/2007, -1/+1Rape at your front door just might happen! Anyone from anywhere showing up for a whatever! Get it? Freecycle is just another cult!
- haeroine, on 10/15/2007, -0/+0Um, it's possible to meet and turn the item over not at home. But you have a point...most rapists belong to cults. For sure.
- cfuse, on 10/14/2007, -1/+2Know the beast. Yes, freecycle is a good thing, however, the 'free' in the title is a potent retard magnet - think the worst of ebay times ten. Be prepared.
- jkramlich, on 10/14/2007, -0/+1I am a former freecycle and craigslist user. I didn't like the drawbacks to both sites so I created my own; http://www.gigoit.org and in case you think I'm spamming, I don't make money off this site. The expenses are paid out of my own pocket because I believe in it. Unlike freecycle and craigslist, we allow you to give feedback on members and keep track of what is actually available versus what has already been picked up. We also do not moderate postings directly. Moderation is done by the users of the site. We also offer RSS feeds, Google Gadgets a Facebook app and a couple other cool tools.
I would appreciate any feedback you guys have. We are just starting out and plan to add many new features as time permits.- haeroine, on 10/15/2007, -0/+0That sounds great; the problem with craigslist is people are so flakey!
- newways, on 10/14/2007, -0/+0FreeCycle makes a whole lot a sense and I appreciate the work that they do.
