CERN's Large Hadron Collider Going 'Colder than Outer Space'
dailygalaxy.com — A vast physics experiment located underneath the line that separates France & Switzerland, the Large Hadron Collider has become one of the coolest places in the Universe... literally. The Large Hadron Collider is entering the final stages of being lowered to a temperature of 1.9 Kelvin (-271C; -456F). Which is colder than deep space.

- chewy5000, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1it does?
- Murdats, on 07/23/2008, -0/+7yes we all know people keep reading it as hardon, we dont need to be told in EVERY story.
- mattgilberg, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1I've come to two conclusions after reading that comment. It is either A) You've been living in a nutshell for the past 13 years seeing as how it was approved for construction in 1995 or B) That was a really ***** joke.
- tunapez, on 07/23/2008, -2/+12Anyone got Vegas' odds on black hole creation/annihilation of earth ? I'm tempted to take the long odds, but collection looks iffy if I were to win.
Dugg for 1.9K, brrrr.- jer2eydevil88, on 07/23/2008, -0/+9I was actually able to tour the Cern last year when I visited my sister who was working at the Wolrd Health Organization in Geneva Switzerland.
All this news about the facility may make me get off my butt and share the pictures I took of it and all its inner workings during the final stages of construction.

- proficient, on 07/23/2008, -10/+1In after hard-on.
- dylio, on 07/23/2008, -5/+4So what is it going to do? Freeze us to death or suck us in a black hole?
- Myonosken, on 07/23/2008, -2/+4Neither. lrn 2 science

- Archer007, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Would be interesting to see if anyone named Freeman had been assigned. Not to mention checking their inventory for crowbars. Hey, you never know.
- rileyhallwood, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2so stoked they're doing this. if everyone is so afraid to do big things like this that could be very dangerous, we'll never unlock the full potential of the world we're living in.
- colosis, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3obviously you havent seen my wife's eyes when shes mad
- shutupdangit, on 07/23/2008, -2/+7So, hey, is it cool if I stick these beers in it to chill?
- mattgilberg, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Meh, even if it does kill us all, at least it will be quick and painless.
- ursername180, on 07/23/2008, -0/+5Being crushed to a singularity sure is painless!
- lamiaconfitor, on 07/23/2008, -13/+1Oh no! Something 'lower' then absolute zero! We are all doomed! That means we are all frozen all ready!

...idiots.- drsnooks, on 07/23/2008, -1/+4deep space is not at absolute zero, the microwave background (believed to be left over from the big bang) puts it at about 2.7K.

Absolute zero is, by definition, the complete absence of heat energy - and therefore physically unobtainable.

Thats fine, keep digging me down Physics has nothing to do with anything as complicated as physics.

- PsYchOsIs, on 07/23/2008, -1/+3Well it COULD explain why it was cold over here the other day...
Maybe not. This place is cold already.

- innocentsinner, on 07/23/2008, -1/+5At least it's used correctly. When it's used incorrectly, it literally makes my head spin.
- medfreak, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2Your head literally spins, and you are still alive?

- Ninjin, on 07/23/2008, -5/+1Outer Space varies a lot in temperature. I understand that they mean deep interstellar space, but there's a lot of other things it's colder than too. Like ice cream, or air conditioners or North Dakota in the Summer.

Hint: Empty space has no temperature. - Totz83, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2http://www.phys.ncku.edu.tw/~astrolab/mirrors/apod ...
Why does it remind me of Goatse? =( - neftaly, on 07/23/2008, -2/+1This was already old news many femtoseconds ago. Buried.
- cutright, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3Kudos for them saying Kelvin instead of degrees Kelvin.

or, more likely: http://xkcd.com/401/ - Ch3mn3rd, on 07/26/2008, -0/+0I'd have to say the only thing cooler than creating some rogue black holes would be if the LHC altered the quarks in some protons and created some strange matter (which would in turn change the entire world into strange matter).
Gotta love theoretical physics.
