Caloric Restriction Comes in a Pill
blog.wired.com — Scientists have provided the strongest evidence yet that the anti-aging benefits of calorically restricted diets can be duplicated -- minus the near-starvation -- by a pill.

- sporg, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2Lots of people claim they want to live longer but old age is not for sissies. I suggest you think long and hard about what you are going to do with yourself in those extra years.
- AWBoy666, on 07/05/2008, -9/+3How does an article with 53 diggs over 2 days make it to the front page when an article with over 800 diggs in the same time period NOT make it?
http://digg.com/comedy/Woman_explained_Scientifica ...
Seriously guys......it's time to wake up and recognize that Digg censors its stories. 53 vs. 800 isn't even close!- DifferentAngle, on 07/05/2008, -1/+2Last time i made a statement like that my account got deleted.
Have fun. - Bawk, on 07/05/2008, -1/+7Because that dumb picture of women equaling time/money/problems/etc has been floating around the internet since 1997 and no one needs to see it ever again.
Stop crying.- thcobbs, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1evil... damnit
Women are the root of EVIL! And don't you forget it!
Of course, they are good for laying... but hey!
- thcobbs, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1evil... damnit
- itsthebrod, on 07/05/2008, -1/+3Seriously guy, realize that different categories also have different weights, and therefore different requirements to be promoted. Waaaaah, if you don't like the algorithm, go to another website.
- rossisdead, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3I dugg that article down for you. Hope it helps!
- Stwo, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1Great comment!
- skcoder, on 07/05/2008, -1/+1Heres another question. Why are you such a blubbering vagina? Nobody wants to see that stupid joke, everyones seen it a million times. We all know women are evil and cost money.
- Braxo, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1The woman article probably received many more 'Bury' votes and this article next to none.
- Stwo, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1Because this article is interesting and original.
- Stwo, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1Also, when Kevin diggs a story, I bet a wide cross section of digg users see it. He IS the face of digg... I wouldn't be surprised if 99% of us have him on our lists.

- NightRiderkami, on 07/05/2008, -1/+8This is what half of Americans have been waiting for their whole lives.
- thcobbs, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2And the other half just dreaming of?
- wonderchemist, on 07/05/2008, -0/+12Don't worry, with the rising cost of food Americans won't need this pill.
- sporg, on 07/05/2008, -0/+5There is no magic pill that can reproduce the effects of caloric restriction anyway. I don't know why this article states that caloric restriction is "impractical, if not dangerous, for people" that is not true. You can eat a calorie restricted diet and still maintain a perfectly healthy intake of food.
What is true is that most people lack the willpower to maintain a calorie restricted diet which requires abstaining from the vast majority of calorie laden garbage that Americans love to feast on.

- nypix, on 07/05/2008, -8/+3Yet another pill that causes the body to not absorb fats, causing greasy ***** and diarrhea.
- rossisdead, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3Read the article. Not even remotely what you're talking about.
- PhoenixFire7, on 07/05/2008, -2/+7People should really be limited to two kids per couple, or one for one, if this pill works. You think we're overpopulated now, just wait until we live to be 150 and keep having kids even after 100. This could be the best and worst thing ever invented.
- Frost9999, on 07/05/2008, -0/+6Birth rates in wealthy countries are dropping and will soon enough sink below replacement levels. So you don't need to worry.
- hara001, on 07/05/2008, -1/+0Then you will kill yourself for the common good? Stalin would be proud.
- teh_techie, on 07/05/2008, -0/+28Misleading title (straight from the source too).
It should read "The anti-aging effects of caloric restriction in a pill". This pill does not produce actual caloric restriction. They were using it on obese mice... that are fed a calorie rich diet. They were trying to keep cells from aging just like calorie restricted diets do.- GregLoire, on 07/05/2008, -0/+11High-five for being the only other person here who actually read the article. We're a dying breed.
- Frost9999, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2Not a bad article from Wired considering their dropping standards lately.
- thcobbs, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1Dropping? Over the last eight years anything that sensationalist they've printed.

- HyperJack, on 07/05/2008, -5/+5I read the title as:
Catholic Restriction Comes in a Pill
Now that would have been cool.
Instead i get lumbered with some article about calories! - farksucks, on 07/05/2008, -7/+2I thought they already had this "pill".. and it was called crystal meth.
- Stwo, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1That was funny. Sorry you got buried
- TomPlansMedia, on 07/05/2008, -2/+1listen up, drug companies.
- phexerian, on 07/05/2008, -2/+5Interesting Article. GSK has already bought rights to it and plans to market it in a pill. Guess what? You can already buy reservatrol in capsule form. Google "Buy reservatrol". It's just a compound that is from a grapevine. It seems to work very efficiently as an antioxidant which can help protect cells. How it affects the mitochondria to preserve cellular life should be interesting to learn about as well. I'd like to see a full spectrum report on the side effects of it. However, since it is a natural compound based from a food source that we eat and drink, or should be at least, every day I don't think it could be that bad.

-3rd Year PharmD / MBA Candidate- Fratz, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2The trouble is in deciding which brand is legitimate, as any "dietary supplement" has a good chance of being sawdust. Is there a trusted organization that tests various brands of reservatrol pills to make sure they have enough (or any) of the active ingredient? Something akin to Consumer Reports?
- Ellipsys, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1In all honesty, if you find something compounded by a member of an herbalists guild, that's probably your best bet. Herbalists who are accepted into the guild have to demonstrate an understanding of the pharmacology of herbal medicine, including safe sources and how to create a tincture or other dosing with a certain amount of standardized, active ingredient. However, this will be expensive. If you have any interest in doing such things yourself, you can find certified Organic and pure herbs in bulk and learn to do some of the basic calculations. The crap that you buy in a jar is hit or miss, and often overpriced. At very least, there are certain brands of supplements that only sell to health care professionals - those tend to be higher quality (Perque, Xymogen). Keep away from anything that's sold as a multilevel marketing scheme (ie - the doctor/nutritionist has to purchase a stock for something from X company on their own dollar, and then make a hard sell on you to recoup and make a profit).
Also, phexerian - I've heard some studies that call into question estrogenic effects of reservatrol, but I''ve not found if they are the results of the compound itself or from what it was derived.

- trollick, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3From the article:
"Resveratrol didn't extend the lives of normal mice"
WTF? Life extension is exactly the effect people hope for going on caloric restriction. And apparently it does NOT come in this pill yet.- ConfirmedCynic, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2Not, but it does seem to postpone some age-related diseases and promote increased vigor, which is a very useful thing both from the quality of life point of view and in terms of saving on medical expenses.
- h0ser, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2the title was misleading, but the actual article was better then the title indicated. I really hope this pill has success in human trials. I'd love to be able to play football with my grandpa, or being able to play football with my grandson when i'm a grandpa. Throwing hail mary's at 90, can you imagine?
- Senious, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2It may sound absolutely ludicrous, but the odds are that some of the people that are 60 today, could be some of the first people to live to be 1000 years old. Aging has been perceived is a totally natural step in life. Well new research would lead us to believe that it is not. Aging is a disease, and one that we are curing rapidly.(the figure of 1000 years is based on the idea that some other incident would have offed you after 1000 years of living like a car accident or murder/war)
Nanotechnology coupled with our imminent complete understanding of human biology within the next 15 years will literally change the course of history dramatically let alone what it means to be human. - bshock, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2Caloric Restriction is "impractical, if not dangerous, for humans?"
Possibly if you're an illiterate, compulsive idiot.
Oh, wait, I live in America. Never mind, Wired, you're right. - bipolarruledout, on 07/07/2008, -0/+0That pill is called Adderall and has been on the market quite some time.
- ajkrik, on 07/07/2008, -1/+1How do they define "caloric restriction"? What are they measuring . . . actually heat, or some substitute that comes in the form of measuring fat, or "counting" calories from food? What kinds of foods? Calories from pure sucrose could have a hugely different impact on health than those from fats or oils or protein or complex carbs. This is little more than a drug company commercial.
