Gene Found That Limits Alcohol Risk
guardian.co.uk — As many as one in four have a much-reduced risk of developing alcohol-related cancer thanks to their genetic make-up, scientists have discovered. Researchers have identified two genes that quickly flush alcohol out of the system, thus reducing its carcinogenic effect

i've only been drunk once, but now I've got a license to become Daniel Plainview. - ligyron, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2Can we get this in liquid form?
- robszol, on 07/20/2008, -0/+7Thanks ancestors, for taking a hit for me!
- dantidote, on 07/20/2008, -1/+24I honestly had no idea there were alcohol related cancers.
- nbx909, on 07/20/2008, -4/+2where is the surgeons general warning for cancer then!??!
- dacodanelson, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4That's not unusual. Most people also don't realize that alcohol is also a sugar. The cancer is usually caused not by the alcohol being inherently dangerous, but rather because it is acidic and slowly corrodes certain parts of the body (throat, mouth, stomach, liver). The more you need to replace cells the more chance you have to get one that is abnormal, ie. cancerous.
There are other ways to get cancer from alcohol, but this is apparently the most common with very very heavy drinkers.- kd1s, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Define heavy drinker. Once in a while I might have 4 or 5 beers but my maybe once a week habit is 2.
That said, the alcohol industry would never want this info to get out.

- whahaa, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3well, that sounds like as good a reason as any to grab another beer from the fridge. brb.
- Br3ach, on 07/20/2008, -0/+12Great, something else that will surely give me cancer, how could alcohol betray me so
- Jeeper14136, on 07/20/2008, -0/+5I'll drink to that
- echelonist, on 07/20/2008, -10/+1Guy1: Want a beer man ?
Guy2: No, I try to stop because I know I'm at risk.
Guy1: Ok, then.. Want a Gene-Hack-man ?
Guy2: ... You're offering me a genetic therapy or a bad word play based on an actor name ?
Guy1: BOTH !
Guy2: ........................ Pass me the beer. -_-
/ uh.. please DONT digg this !!- zip000, on 07/20/2008, -1/+1Done.

- sockpuppets, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1People made fun of me for rubbing pepperoni all over myself every morning. I even questioned it myself when my mom's poodle would mount up because of the scent.
I'm glad I persevered.

- TheCash, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1Well there's some gene therapy I'd be happy to sign up for. Now make it in liquid form for the perfect chaser.
- kmattso, on 07/20/2008, -2/+1Im bredy sher i don hav tha jeen...*hic
- msk275, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1I definitely was told by my middle school teacher that alcohol doesn't cause cancer.. and I believe him. 'Course, he died of liver cancer not too long ago.. But still.. no connection! I won't believe it!

- billizm, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2Now they just need to market an over the counter home tester to see if you have the gene. I know I would buy it. Or even a simple lab check.
- b8man99, on 07/20/2008, -2/+3This article brought to you by the alcohol spin bureau - the same people who brought you the classics: drinking wine everyday is good for you, drinking keeps families together, beer is a better re-hydrating drink than re-hydration drinks and of course, the ongoing project, cannabis will turn you insane so you'd better stick to booze instead.
- Hincapie, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1awesome.
- Beylan, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Does this gene make you vomit and lose consciousness, then wake up the next morning naked in the bed of your neighbors pickup truck with a terrible headache?
If so, I think I have this gene! - hakkola, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Appeareantly this gene is found in 31% of Finns, and 49% of Native Americans. As a Finn I like my odds. I'm surprised it isn't higher though.
