New Radiohead Video is Shot with Lasers, Not Cameras
gizmodo.com — Radiohead, never ones to shy away from trying new things, has shot its new video for "House of Cards" without using cameras at all. Whaa? Yes, they've used two fancy new technologies called Geometric Informatics and Velodyne Lidar. To shoot it using lasers and stuff. Let's break it down here.

- caniglia22, on 07/11/2008, -4/+184I remember hearing about a music television channel a long long time ago... I heard they had all kinds of different music videos. I also heard they had a show called Beavis and Butthead. If only it were true... I might actually watch it.

- Zalyster, on 07/11/2008, -0/+6Even still, FUSE was still good until it got so many ***** reality shows and movies, and basically became MTV.

5. Woodstock
6. The voice of the youth - Clark3934, on 07/11/2008, -3/+13Strangely enough, "Video Killed the Radio Star" was the first music video to ever air on MTV back in 1981.

- TheMachine1, on 07/11/2008, -2/+44The scumbags at Viacom have made sure you can not watch a music video on TV.
- krahzee, on 07/11/2008, -4/+23Blame Viacom all you want, but they switched MTV, VH1 and others away from straight videos to other crap because of ratings.
When reality shows were constantly killing ratings wise vs. blocks of videos, it becomes hard to argue against more non-music programming. Hell, given the production cost of most shows vs. being handed relatively free programming (a small fee for airing a song, but no cost in shooting the video at all) they must really have seen a stark contrast in ad dollars to make this financially viable.
If the viewers had supported by watching more of the video segments of the day, along with the specialized shows like Yo! MTV Raps and Headbangers Ball, the push would have not been made to go to other stuff. Even MTV2, which was launched to pacify people who were upset that videos were gone from MTV, is now mostly crap in an attempt to bring it higher ratings.
To me the problem televised videos is that there is no sense of urgency to tune in. Unlike a weekly TV show, or a baseball game, for example, videos running all of the time became something to put on when nothing else was on as opposed to something that you had to watch live or miss. MTV always aired the same play list, so if the video was new, chances are you would catch it again and again anyway. Now with the internet, it becomes even more problematic for channels like MTV to put that sense of urgency into it since pretty much any video is easily available on demand thanks to youtube. - ayeroxor, on 07/11/2008, -2/+18*****. If I open a Japanese steakhouse, I'm not going to start selling biscuits and gravy even there are people that like them, because god dammit, I'm a ***** Japanese steakhouse and I'm going to honor by clientele by not watering down myself to try to please everyone. I may not make as much money, but I will get a more devoted clientele and that will be a greater reward in the long run.
- RationalXubrnce, on 07/11/2008, -0/+6 Yeah but when MTV 2 isn't even showing videos anymore don't you think thats a problem?
- mateo60, on 07/12/2008, -1/+2As much as I hate Viacom and MTV, if there were enough people who wanted to watch music videos, they would show them. They even gave music videos a second chance with MTV2, but alas, nobody watched. Instead they watched crappy reality shows. It's a shame.
- bwdd, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2I'd watch the music videos if they weren't all kanye west.
- krahzee, on 07/12/2008, -1/+1@ayeroxor
ayeroxor, it's not *****, it's economics. Sure, if you opened a Japanese steak house you could choose to stay that if you wanted. You would be willing to forgo greater profits by not expanding your menu, and that is your right.
However you missed one little factor in your comparison: You would have no boss to answer to in your steakhouse. As long as you paid your bills on time, the bank and all of your vendors could care less what you made in profits so long as they got their money.
MTV, on the other hand is owned by a parent company, controlled by a board of directors. Do you think some 60 something board member gives a ***** about the artistic integrity of MTV, or do you think they want as much money out of it as possible (Through higher ratings)?
Of course they want the money. So they will lean on the head of the Channel to deliver results that lead higher ad revenue that they can then tout to the shareholders, who elect them.
Now put yourself in the position of the guy programming MTV, who is under constant pressure to deliver results.
On hand you can move to more shows , producing higher ratings, making your bosses happy, and possibly getting promoted.
On the other, you can stick to your guns and air mostly videos, watch ratings slide off as viewers outgrow MTV (or get too busy to watch it as much as they used to) and the novelty of it wears off costing you not only any chance of promotion, but quite possibly your employment as well.
What would you do?

- bubba9999, on 07/11/2008, -1/+8Your feelings are incorrect. There's nothing real about MtV's delusional reality shows.
- bullhead2007, on 07/11/2008, -0/+5Reality shows have never been about reality.
The only thing that makes a "reality show" is not hiring writers or actors or a production crew.
- seanc6610, on 07/11/2008, -0/+14well i've had music hd for a little while now, it's an only HD channel that plays concerts, music videos, showcases etc 24/7. it's awesome to see actual music on music channels.
- hivoltage815, on 07/11/2008, -1/+5the selection is a tad lame though - like the same 10 artists over and over (last I checked). I enjoyed the Dave Matthews Band and Pearl Jam Storytellers in HD though.
- shanesemler, on 07/11/2008, -1/+18T.V.? What is that, isn't that something old people watch, like a nickelodeon?
Seriously though, there is a station that plays music videos, its called youtube.com.- bubba9999, on 07/11/2008, -0/+4This is true. Youtube is the new Mtv, but with much less suckage.
- srt4b, on 07/11/2008, -0/+9Less, suckage, less resolution.
- RationalXubrnce, on 07/11/2008, -1/+4 Oh you mean I can watch them in 320x240 compressed to ***** and back instead of watching in full stereo 1080i? Awesome, who could need more than that!

- djHBRD, on 07/11/2008, -0/+2Actually, on MTVU they had Radiohead's "All I Need" video between the new Lil' Wayne and Rihanna videos.
Quite the contrast in selection. - McHoffa, on 07/11/2008, -0/+2they used to play radiohead all the time in the mid 90s
- reformation, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1You seem to be under the impression that Radiohead are not one of the biggest bands in the world.
- djHBRD, on 07/11/2008, -0/+2Actually, on MTVU they had Radiohead's "All I Need" video between the new Lil' Wayne and Rihanna videos.
- whitebishop, on 07/11/2008, -0/+10There is a station in Canada called Much Music that play actual music video's. I used to think of it as a sub-standard MTV, now I think its the other way around.
- SuicideMouse, on 07/11/2008, -0/+4So true, MM is what you watch if you're into anything mainstream and watch music on tv around here.
They have music specific channels too, Much Loud, Much Vibe, etc...
I'm not a big fan but it is neat to walk around in Toronto and bump into band on their way to, or at, Much Music. (It's on the side of a popular street, walk by it on the way to my fav headshop)
MTV is so far behind Much in terms of quality, and Much isn't THAT great to begin with. - amercer, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1Watch "The Wedge". It's by far the best music-video program on Much, and on TV in general. Seriously check it out, you can find torrents as well.
- jenalcarp, on 07/12/2008, -0/+0 Much Retro & Much Loud they don't even play shows!! well they didn't when i subscribed. they are great, and doesn't MTV Canada have some sort of limitation and legally can not play Videos... how stupid is that!
- SuicideMouse, on 07/11/2008, -0/+4So true, MM is what you watch if you're into anything mainstream and watch music on tv around here.
- allothersnsused, on 07/11/2008, -2/+1I hear there is a channel called "Terrible Reality Show Television" that began showing terrible reality shows but now shows music videos. Strange... you wouldn't expect that.
- normalkid0615, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1You guys are morons
Have you ever heard of B.E.T.? They play videos.
Hint of Sarcasm - B3000, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Sure, if by videos you mean 24/7 reruns of "What's Happening!?!"
- normalkid0615, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1You guys are morons
- MatchStick, on 07/11/2008, -0/+3Fuse and VH1 sometimes show music videos... but yeah, there seems to be some kind of conspiracy to kill music all together
- manbear, on 07/11/2008, -1/+2and the face of that conspiracy is Fall Out Boy.
- thegallery, on 07/11/2008, -4/+1There isn't AND actual video to watch?
- reformation, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1AND
- agooga, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1VH1 plays a show every day at 3am called "Nocturnal State." Add Tivo to the mix and you get a decent music video fix. Unfortunately, the videos are fairly repetitive day to day, so I only Tivo it once a week or so.
- Maxo1128, on 07/11/2008, -4/+0Ummmm... isn't the whole concept of music on tv kind of an oxymoron to begin with? Admittedly, MTV used to be a lot better, but it never really justified its title.
- solistus, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1I guess this was just a setup for some MTV snark, but TFA explains that the video release was delayed till tomorrow and that all they have for now is the screenshots.

- HuskyPuzzle, on 07/10/2008, -4/+39Man, being a successful musician must be so much fun. "Let's spend an obscene amount of money hiring the most creative people in the biz and then we'll just make it all back." Seeing these guys in GG Park in SF in August and fired up for that show.
- alapoet, on 07/11/2008, -3/+202You know whats I love about Radiohead?
They never try to recreate their last album, or their last video. Always staking out new territory!- linkinpark342, on 07/11/2008, -11/+1Except when they did that song about their last album. and tried to recreate it basically (My Iron Lung)
- Nayson, on 07/11/2008, -1/+20My Iron Lung was a Radiohead song about a Radiohead song.
- dstz, on 07/11/2008, -6/+1True and false. Got to see them in live not long ago and it was great because they played like a traditional rock band (lot of older tracks too, from ok computer and even from the bends,) no fiddling around with toys like in the post kid-a era. They felt like the post-U2 band they kind of refused to be, but are. And they rocked the place (well, as far as possible, that is.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0bhQaPU08U- Iztikeit, on 07/11/2008, -0/+8U2 pales in comparison with Radiohead
- EVogel, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2Radiohead doesn't sound like other bands.
Bands try to sound like Radiohead.
Sorry, Radiohead destroys all.
- sodade, on 07/11/2008, -3/+2I kinda agree, but would it have been so bad for them to continue to develop the themes that spawned OK Computer? I would have been happier with an OKC2 + OKC3 before breaking into the new with KidA. To take that further, I would have appreciated a couple more songs along the lines of Idioteque.
To use another example, Led Zep I had some amazing interpretations of blues in rock style. From there, Zep went all over the map, but towards the end, they took that same concept to a much higher level with the masterpiece "Since I've Been Loving You." Ironically, it was on the most progressive album they ever did (Presence).
I am looking forward to Radiohead's "Since I've Been Loving You" moment. I hope I'm not waiting for nothing. - lazlonger, on 07/11/2008, -2/+1nonsense. they are great don't get me wrong, BUT the do make every album twice....though as was said above, every other time (roughly) they are super innovative...
oh and Since I've Been Loving You is on Zepp III dude....third album, having that "moment" you wanted nearly right out of the box. - warriorscot, on 07/11/2008, -1/+1Im not sure I don't always like everything radiohead does I feel a couple of the albums have been hit and miss especially the latest one. There is something to be said about finding a sound and sticking to it and making it great.
- funzo, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1i'd say they're more into experimenting with new sounds than trying not to recreate their last sound
- darkchild82, on 07/11/2008, -2/+35I LOVE this song, it's my favourite track. Heck, I LOVE this album!
- floppyparty, on 07/11/2008, -3/+3I have listened to In Rainbows a lot, but not this song now that I think of it. I'll go back and listen to it on the way home from work. Have you listened to the scotch mist live version of In Rainbows?
- kidathinnes, on 07/11/2008, -8/+2My least favorite on the album. BTW I love the album and radiohead, but don't digg this track.
- alarmist, on 07/11/2008, -0/+2this song is a grower
i found it a little boring at first but now i love it and especially thom's vocal melody part...ooooooo oooooooooooo - kidathinnes, on 07/11/2008, -1/+1haha of course the digg downs...
I find this song very boring and repetitive. I'm seeing radiohead a couple times on this next tour and I will give HoC another chance before the shows. - TheKarmaPolice, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1maybe it's just the avatar speaking, but i agree. i think it's the most boring track on the album. it's still a great tune, but i prefer the original from 2005. i saw them at bristow and they played it as the closer. it was nice, but i would rather have ended with street spirit, exit music, or motion picture soundtrack.
- alarmist, on 07/11/2008, -0/+2this song is a grower
- niwaje, on 07/11/2008, -0/+3I absolutely agree with you. Love the album and love this song even more.
- Myonosken, on 07/11/2008, -0/+2Great song....Not a great set closer though. So glad we got Idioteque.
- sClubDevin, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2Weird Fishes/Arpeggi wins hands down as the best track on the album. I really really really wish that radiohead wasn't so big so i could see them in a more intimate venue. I missed them when they came to Maryland. :/
- IronGoldfish, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1I'm torn as to my favorite track from the In Rainbows sessions. 'Down Is The New Up' is pretty great, but I absolutely love House Of Cards and Reckoner. Can't wait to see them in Vancouver!

- bacchus1313, on 07/11/2008, -11/+3Um, why do they call Thom Yorke the "Female Lead"? I mean I know he has a high voice and often sings falsetto, but seriously?
quote:
"and was used to render the performances of Radiohead's Thom Yorke, the female lead, and several partygoers"- Asvetic, on 07/11/2008, -0/+11It's 2 people... Thom Yorke and the Female Lead... plus a bunch of partygoers.
- dilbertsd, on 07/11/2008, -3/+2"performances of Radiohead's Thom Yorke, the female lead, and several partygoers. "
I read that sentence as a list of 3 subjects.....but if I'd heard the song it'd be very obvious as to what they meant - eonblu, on 07/11/2008, -0/+6"The Geometric Informatics scanning system employs structured light to capture detailed 3D images at close proximity, and was used to render the performances of Radiohead's Thom Yorke, the female lead, and several partygoers."
I believe they meant that there was a female lead acting in the video in addition to Yorke.- Nicksname1, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1Yes im sure the video has Thom Yorke singing, then tells the story that goes along with the lyrics. Where a husband and wife go to a swingers party and.... put their keys in the bowl...and then the female kisses her husband goodbye....and it crumbles their marriage like a house of cards. Should be good. Great Song!
- bacchus1313, on 07/11/2008, -3/+2My point is that there should be grammatical disambiguation.
- fwib, on 07/11/2008, -1/+1but you know that Thom Yorke is not a female. No disambiguation necessary.

- kawaiirobo, on 07/11/2008, -0/+4I agree with Terminal, but in my opinion the Parinoid Android video is the best, it's by far the strangest. Just adding that in if your rummaging through youtube for radio head videos.

- inkswamp, on 07/11/2008, -1/+9I was seriously starting to think I was the only one who knew about these guys. This song is amazing and I've been pushing TV on the Radio on everyone I know. It surprises me that they're not more popular.
- floppyparty, on 07/11/2008, -0/+4Where are you from?
- exomni, on 07/11/2008, -8/+1Huh? TV on the Radio was RIDICULOUSLY popular the year they released Return to Cookie Mountain. Seriously, people wouldn't shut up about them.
Most annoying were the ***** who seemed to think they had somehow discovered some exceptional band and wouldn't shut up about them to me, even though I had heard OK Calculator years before all the dumbass Pitchfork followers ever heard of them.
"I was seriously starting to think I was the only one who knew about these guys."
Yep, you're exactly one of the ***** I'm talking about. No, you are not the only one. You can stop feeling special. - Borgesandme, on 07/11/2008, -0/+2They are pretty popular at this point. But ecxomni doesn't have to be a douche about it. OK Calculator was not very good anyway, so the fact that you knew about it back then doesn't mean anything.
Why does everyone hate Pitchfork now? Maybe their late with alot of music but I would want people to take their advice over say MTV or SPIN magazine. You shouldn't be pissed people come to good music later than you, you should just be happy they came to g)ood music
Not to mention I think Pitchfork was one of the first the break this very story (Radiohead+lasers) - rustyrobot, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1They are definitely a band you want to see live too. Incredible show.
exomni = prick
- dlinkwit27, on 07/11/2008, -0/+7Yea, but that video was shot regularly and the effects added. The Radiohead video looks like that because of the way it was shot. Nevertheless, awesome song, awesome band, Mr. Grieves (from the same album) rocks as well.
- jojothemonkey, on 07/11/2008, -0/+4Mr. Grieves is interesting, at least it's not a straight up cover of the pixies song.
- exomni, on 07/11/2008, -6/+2"Hey, let's do The Pixies, but in a southern gospel style."
Use someone else's lyrics, and just mimic a complete style entirely. That way we don't actually have to be creative in any way! Hooray! Let's contribute absolute nothing! We'll be heralded by kids who don't know any better as an "awesome band"!
Meh. TV On the Radio sucks. Hipsters who think TV On the Radio are significant in the slightest suck even more. - ath1337, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1Covering a Pixie's song acapella style was actually pretty cool...
You suck
- krnldmp, on 07/11/2008, -16/+1What a ridiculous waste of powerful technology. You really can't see nothin.
- xekko, on 07/11/2008, -1/+4I know, looks like fun doesn't it? Respect to Radiohead.
- krnldmp, on 07/11/2008, -4/+2Whatever. There's a whole music genre called "low-fi", where everything is recorded with ***** of distortion and terrible resolution. Some people think its art, others actually think it sounds cool. Personally, I can't imagine watching a band play through a scanning point source radiator when I can see thousands of times more information with ambient light and a cheap camera.
- 4rp4n3t, on 07/11/2008, -4/+1Well, a boring douchebag with no sense of fun or entertainment could say the same thing of Digg...
- floppyparty, on 07/11/2008, -1/+2Haha, maybe Radiohead has spent too much time in America. That's all we are about baby.

- SquigglyP, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1I believe he's contrasting Radiohead's music with their lyrics. I may be wrong. I don't listen to a lot of Radiohead, so these lyrics (I assume they are lyrics) I don't remember.
- JBabin3xB, on 07/11/2008, -4/+11frikin lazerz
- spazoidspam, on 07/11/2008, -2/+8Seems to me that this technology could be very useful in autonomous vehicles. They could use these scanning lasers to create a 3D map of the world around them, and use that 3D map to determine obstacle avoidance and everything. Seems like it would be much easier then trying to use image recognition software.
- edvas, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1Indeedy do:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simultaneous_localiza ... - jefferygomer, on 07/11/2008, -0/+2The company I work for actually uses this technology. After the laser survey of an area with a lot of obstacles, we figure out how to transport large equipment around those obstacles to get to the location required.
- krnldmp, on 07/11/2008, -2/+2That's actually one of the uses it is being developed for. The best current technology uses it in Addition to normal cameras to increase the total available information for digital scene processing. The idea of just using the lasers to record a music video is a kind of art where you fritter away the power of a new technology to produce an odd effect that ultimately reduces the amount of information conveyed. Doing stuff like this is a very low artform.
- jimmiss, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1"Very low artform"
You're reading too much into it. Think "Hey I saw this laser thing that looks really cool. I don't know how it works buts lets use it in a video" then "okay"
You have to admit, tech aside, it looks cool.
- jimmiss, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1"Very low artform"
- onlyclave, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1www.velodyne.com/lidar
It is. - jimmiss, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1That's exactly what they use it for. It's what is called LADAR essentially. Still to expensive for us damn hobbyists though.
- TechMike, on 07/11/2008, -1/+1jimmis, this is LIDAR, not LADAR.
LADAR is simply imaging laser reflection from a solid object.
LIDAR (Laser Induced Differential Absorption Radar) on the other hand, uses lasers to create differential optics. LIDAR is better for producing 3-d visualizations of detected objects, since it uses shorter-wavelength light sources, which lets it produce finer detail in the images.
- TechMike, on 07/11/2008, -1/+1jimmis, this is LIDAR, not LADAR.
- daeus, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1are you a futurist or something
- nathanww, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1"Seems like it would be much easier then trying to use image recognition software."
Yes and no.
These things usually have a limited range(which means limited speed for vehicles), and usually a limited framerate. Rangefinders(which this is a kind of) can also be "blind" to certain kinds of objects that don't reflect light/ultrasound well(while a visual approach can still detect these)
Mapping is also only half the battle--you then have to actually figure out how to analyze the location data that you get(i.e.a car can safely drive over a small pothole but not another car)

- SeaweedWater, on 07/11/2008, -12/+1I love Radiohead, been a huge fan for years, but theyre getting a little full of themselves, I just saw them at the Roskilde Festival and there were these two huge screens they couldve used so that people that werent super close to the stage could enjoy their set, but they used these 6 stationary cameras so that everyone was staring at a microphone for half the show whenever Thom Yorke wasnt singing.
Again, I love Radiohead, but even Neil Young isnt so full of himself as to take 2 big, giant screens visibilty from 100% of his set to maybe 40%. The crowd just sorta had this 'Hey, Radiohead's playing, I wish I could see it' feel.
And lasers are cool.- jakem1, on 07/11/2008, -0/+5I just saw them here in London and really liked the screens as they were almost used as mood lighting rather than as TV screens. Much less distracting than having them blown up on great big screens.
Also, they used the screens in a similar way when I last saw them in 2003 so I don't think you can say that they are now getting full of themselves.
Finally, the cameras weren't just pointed at Thom's microphone. They were divided up so that each member of the band was filmed at the same time.
It's also worth noting that the main lighting that they're currently using is LED based so it doesn't use too much power. It also allows them to create some amazing effects on stage.- SeaweedWater, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1I did dig the effects of the screen, and I'm sure it would work in some cases, I'm just not so sure that a venue with 70k tickets bought would be the correct venue to bust the screens out on,
They were the only act (besides Chemical Brothers) that did something different with the screens.I'm just saying..

- ChayD, on 07/11/2008, -0/+5LIDAR is hardly a new technology, although previously it was just single point capture for doing things like seeing how far away

- 12D3, on 07/11/2008, -1/+8Gotta love Radiohead. There is nothing better than watching a band evolve as they push for the Art in music rather than the money. Due to the glut of terrible bands in the MTV era, we often forget of music as an art form, and I'm glad Radiohead keeps reminding us by pushing the envelope with their interesting albums/videos.

Article states ". . . was used to render the performances of Radiohead's Thom Yorke, the female lead, and several partygoers." The use of the comma is not being used to describe Thom Yorke, but was indicating that "female lead" and "several partygoers" are two other entities that were rendered.
