Shipping Dell-ays
NotebookReview.com — As students head back to school there might be something missing from their backpacks -- the new Dell laptop they ordered weeks ago. Shipping delays on the new Dell Inspiron and XPS line of notebooks are causing people to wait several weeks longer than they anticipated for their notebooks.

- danishh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+32Just finally got my laptop today! ordered at the end of june! 40 days for a laptop is absurd!!!
- Valnar300, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3Its absurd that people buy Dell. You pay too much and get too little in return, you could get a better computer in stores(and cheaper) or putting it together yourself. *Typing this on a Dell of course*
All that put aside, 40 days is absurd for a laptop.- questionable, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Put together a laptop?
- christophocles, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Yes it's called a barebones notebook. Search for Clevo or ASmobile (ASUS) and you should find some.
- brundlefly76, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I dont mind my desktop being a homebuilt box of parts under my desk (always has been), but I would never build a notebook.
A notebook has form factor, power profile, and specialty parts which really require a comprehensive top-down engineering design.
Building a notebook requires a lot of compromise, because you have an extremely limited range of parts to work with, vs a desktop where you can get any part easily, and sometimes even parts the vendors dont have yet
- brundlefly76, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I dont mind my desktop being a homebuilt box of parts under my desk (always has been), but I would never build a notebook.
- christophocles, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Yes it's called a barebones notebook. Search for Clevo or ASmobile (ASUS) and you should find some.
- schoate09, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Let me guess, Apple's better? Is it because, you get more return by a laptop that burns you?
- christophocles, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I agree Dell is way overpriced if you don't know how to shop for deals. I wouldn't touch dell.com with a ten-foot pole without trolling slickdeals for a week or two. If you aren't getting at least $300 off their regular retail price then you are getting ripped off. I've seen insane deals that I almost had to jump on but I decided I wanted a notebook with better specs and a cleaner look than the standard Dell POS.
- questionable, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Put together a laptop?
- cherwilco, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1you should demand a credit for every single day past the time you where originally quoted!
- Valnar300, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3Its absurd that people buy Dell. You pay too much and get too little in return, you could get a better computer in stores(and cheaper) or putting it together yourself. *Typing this on a Dell of course*
- trapizoid1, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1that is absurd
- DJMD, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20I ordered 7/1 and received it today on 8/9. These wait times are absurd.
- dmeredith, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Ordered my Inspiron 1520 on 19th July, now being told that it won't be here until 31st August, having originally been scheduled for 8th August. Of course they only told me of the delay 1 working day before it was due to be delivered!
- nihility, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I ordered a 1401 (or whatever the number is, its a 14" model though) on 7/21, was quoted as it shipping in a month, and got it within 2 weeks. I think I just got lucky, I feel bad saying good things about Dell (laptop is very nice) after reading about all of these delays. Good luck to all of you guys still waiting.
- BLACKEAGLE, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2ya 35 days to wait for my system is crazy and thats 35days they quoted I still dont have the system yet so it maybe end up being longer
- Necromas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Midnight Blue Inspiron 1520 w/ T7300, 8600M GT, 2GB RAM, 7200rpm 160GB HD
Ordered: 7/31
Est Shipping Date: 8/22 :(
Est Shipping Date for my Midnight Blue logitech cordless mouse: 9/6 (WTF!? They should have mentioned it was out of stock before I bought it!) - farelli09, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0I'm still waiting of course. I had to order ruby red...
- arshield, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2m1330 ordered 7/27, estimated shipping date 8/31
- benb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The good news (if you can call it that) is that sometimes your ship date is an overestimate. I received an email today telling my my system shipped (ordered 7/20), the est date was 8/25. Of course, those 1330 are hot items so who knows. Mine was another model.
- delldelaysucks, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0I waited 2delays for midnight blue and reordered with black. Also I despise the fact that dell isn't publicizing their mistakes or giving their excuses to why they did not see the delay coming beforehand for the dell inspiron 1400/1500/1700. They only suck up to the highend buyers, aka XPS notebooks. As a consumer I hate to be treated like this when I paid more than 1.3k for my laptop!
- dainbramage559, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I bought an xps m1330 and we are getting the same delays as you. As for what is causing the delays, Dell has been very upfront and honest about what is going on. In fact, you can go to the direct2dell site and read the blogs. They have full explanation there.
- twrife, on 10/10/2007, -6/+3i c wat u did thar. funneh.
- aaronsdropzone, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Last Thursday I ordered an XPS and once the order went through it said it'd ship 8/31. Screw that. I canceled the order.
- SirNoobius, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5that's why I am getting an ASUS U3
- Mattman9876, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0i orderd mine july 13 and they said it would ship a week later and then they said it was gunna be shipped 2morrow and know they tell me it wont ship until august 16
- cactus476, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I work as a Desktop Support Technician, under student support, at a major university. I hate new laptops. Every model has different drivers, preloaded AV(s) and hidden software I have to remove, grrr.
- roberto_deneero, on 10/10/2007, -16/+2Buy a Mac. No spyware installed.
- eecan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Can't you read? He fixes OTHER peoples' laptops.
- Verugan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Stop ordering from Home & Home Office department and you won't have that problem. We order everything through Small Business and I don't have to uninstall anything.
- cactus476, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I work on student's laptops, they buy them, not me. So every single laptop that comes in is a different manufacturer and model.
- roberto_deneero, on 10/10/2007, -16/+2Buy a Mac. No spyware installed.
- Light11, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8still waiting for asus eee
- wafflez, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1I ordered a video card from them and it took dell a week and a half to ship a PREMANUFACTURED 8800gts, luckily, dhl was fast and the package came the day after dell shipped it out.
- Bob042, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1... You can order just video cards from Dell? Or rather, you would order a video card from Dell? Why?
- wafflez, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1yes, because they had the cheapest 8800gts 640mb price by $30 + free shipping.
frick, I clicked the wrong reply button, this is directed at Bob042
- ScienceDoc, on 10/10/2007, -12/+1You should not buy a Dell. Dell is a big supporter of the neocons, and Micheal Dell and W go way back.
- Gee1004, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Dell sucks
- dragoneye, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I was all angry when mine took 25 days to arrive, now I see all these people with longer wait times and I realized that I was at least somewhat lucky, and smart for very soon after they were announced.
- a10waveracer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I find this really funny (in a bad way) because there was a similar problem to this at the end of May for Lenovo and a lot of the people canceled their order and went to Dell... and are now having to wait even longer. Oh well--I love my T61!
- SanTe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I work in desktop support for my company and we have been experiencing order delays with Dell all summer because the whole industry is reportedly struggling through an LCD shortage. We're getting our Dell desktop systems in a reasonable amount of time but the 19" LCD monitors ordered with them have been arriving roughly 2-3 weeks behind. I imagine this same LCD shortage is what Lenovo is/was going through. That being said, the last batch of five Thinkpad T60s we ordered arrived pretty quickly...
- roberto_deneero, on 10/10/2007, -8/+2Dell should do the right thing and just give the shareholders their money back and close up shop.
- JuyLe, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Still waiting for the "My macbook took 2 days to arrive". Common guys !
- yoursh, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16Dude, your getting a Dell............eventually........

- smurf22, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5I bought my mac two days ago and it came today, buy a mac, and get a copy of windows. ;)
- majortom1981, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2YEs it is bad that there is a delay but that serves people right for buying a laptop like this when its just announced. especially ones that are bound to be popular.
If you call they WILL give you a $100 credit. You have to complain though.- Monk22, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1how does it "serve them right" for paying for a product that was announced?
- Trixrox, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I ordered my dell inspiron 1520 the 29th of July and got mine august 3rd. With standard DHL ground shipping, it went from TN to OH in one day. It was basically overnighted.
- BetterThanYou, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0i ordered my xps July 7th....the estimated ship date is August 28th...plus 3 days for shipping...
just 56 days to build a laptop! wow! - TJ11240, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Happened to me. I ordered a week ago and then they told me it was to be pushed back after I leave for college. A lot of good that does me.
- TwoThirteen, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0Dugg for the name.
- mrDug, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6So most of you don't know a lot about Dell. The reason it takes so long is because Dell doesn't sell you a built machine... they build yours. When you place an order they order in your parts (and the parts for the other thousand people) that day. When they receive all your parts, they then build your machine. This is why Dell can stay with the times. While other companies sell you yesterdays parts, Dell sells you today's parts... it'll just take some time getting to you. The manufacturer and the thousands of orders is whats holding up the process, not Dell.
- Necromas, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Other manufacturers with the same level of custumizability options, or simply Dells in the past have never had shipping times this long.
- Petrarch1603, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2interesting theory, but that still doesnt explain why Dell is not ready for school starting. This is an annual event and predictable every year. Dell is sloppy in not adequately preparing.
- eecan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Not a theory. A fact.
- dmeredith, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I can live with the delay if told about it at the start. What I can't live with it being told one date, and when I get to it and become excited about the imminent delivery to be emailed that it's going to be another month. If they'd told me it would be the end of August when I ordered it I could either order it and wait or get one from elsewhere if I needed it earlier. You cannot tell me that they only knew it would be delayed 2 days before the delivery was scheduled (which was 3 weeks after the order date, which I didn't have a problem with at the time).
- eyeburn12, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1ordered a m1330 on 6/30 and it got delayed to 8/15 from 7/19 initially
I found it outrageous to wait so long for a notebook so i cancelled it and ordered a macbook pro instead.
My MBP came on the same day I ordered it.- petard, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Yeah I bought a ruby red 1520 on July 5 but it was delayed till August 28 so I canceled and ordered a Macbook Pro and it came the day BEFORE I ordered it! AMAZING!
- Urusai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9That's nothing, I was walking around once thinking about maybe visiting apple.com to view their product lineup when a guy runs up and gives me a brand new MacBook Pro in a box, winks at me, and says "We'll bill you. Steve says 'Hi!'".
- David201, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0damn. my 1520 is supposed to be shipped tomorrow which would barely get it in on time as is, but if they delay it anymore i'm *****. damn it.
- Dagarik, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0Awwwww poor babies.
- Greg2b, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Dude this sucks because I order mine about a week ago, and I was hoping to get it before school started.
I know they "custom" make it. But still it can't be that hard to get a computer to put in an alternative part and have it shipped, I guess their just getting lazy over there....- tiberone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"I guess their just getting lazy over there...."
looks like your getting lazy over there....
- tiberone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"I guess their just getting lazy over there...."
- fiftycents, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I ordered a dell laptop and GOT it one week later. Same happened for my friend.
- wir3dal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1According to a Dell account manager I talked to there is an "industry-wide shortage of LCD screens". I have an estimated 4 week wait time for my laptop but who knows. Not sure about other hardware but that could be the reason for most/all laptop delays.
- RapeApe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Only good thing about this is you can bitch @ Dell if you're looking for a deal and don't really care about the shipping date.
- DigablePlanet, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I work at CDW...Dell is a horrible organization.
- Damhna, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I am currently working with a 22 day lead time (They are actually doing it a little quicker than that but that is the official word) for latitudes with a WXGA+ .
WXGA (no Plus) has a 14 day lead time.
Usually we enjoy a maximum of 2 days for all gear. It's not just consumers feeling this pain.
When called to task my rep cited an industry wide shortage on screen components and linked to this: http://www.electronicsweekly.com/Articles/2007/07/10/41785/large+lcd+panel+market+growing+faster+than+expected.htm- SanTe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Digg Damhna up. We're seeing the exact same thing at my company. The 19" LCDs (1280x1024) we've ordered throughout this summer have all arrived 2-3 weeks after the desktop PCs that were on the same order. I initially thought it was an LCD shortage in general, but the last batch of Thinkpad T60s we ordered (1024x768 LCDs) arrived pretty quickly.
This makes sense if you look around. The market has been absolutely flooded this spring/summer with larger LCD screens both for computers and for televisions. They probably can't build them all fast enough to meet demand...

- Mooky555, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I'm typing this from my blue lidded Inspiron 1420.... it came 2 weeks earlier then estimated time for me. lol
- kurtwinter, on 10/10/2007, -5/+3Should have bought a Mac. FLAME ON!!!!
- christophocles, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0LOL I ordered 80 lbs worth of speakers from Dell (with free shipping) and got them in under 5 days. Sucks for you guys
- eecan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1It's an LCD panel issue, thats why :P
- freakguy54321, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0wtf. how the hell did you guys get your mac so quick!!! WTF ive been waiting like 2 weeks!
- cherwilco, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1I ran to ultimate electronics in phoenix and had to wait a whole 15 friggin minutes in line and THEN I had to wait 1 whole day for MY lazy ass to assemble all the damn parts into the computer I am typing this on today!!! THE OUTRAGE!!!! and all this because I was "teased" by the temptation that this comp would be cheaper than a comparable dell machine. geesh was it really worth it? Oh yeah it was LOL
- BobTurtle, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Ha ha ha. This is the most pitiful troll attempt that I have ever witnessed.
- mikesly, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Dude! You DIDN'T GET A DELL Yet?!
- NenDaiKi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2For the record, the US Dell locations only assemble desktop PCs. The laptops are assembled in China and go to Dell shipping. Any component shortages are handled out east.
- impissed, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Nice play on words, *****.
- DuFace, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I love how the Digg user base switches sides from loving Dell (Ubuntu support), to hating Dell (Delays). That being said, these waits are a bit ridiculous.
- numba1xclusive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Lenovo ftw. I love my Thinkpad T60
- UObean, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I got my 1420N yesterday, less than a week after I ordered it. Although their parition tables were annoying, I'm pretty happy with the system and the fast delivery.
