Horny for Ubuntu 8.10: first look at Intrepid Ibex
arstechnica.com — The first alpha release of Ubuntu 8.10, codenamed Intrepid Ibex, was made available on Saturday. This preliminary Intrepid prerelease includes updated packages, a new version of the Linux kernel, and an experimental new visual style.

- courtjester555, on 06/30/2008, -3/+69I encourage everyone to test this release and future Alphas in a virtualization program like VirtualBox.
Alpha 1 on Distrowatch: http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=04969
.iso file (shouldn't be too much strain on the servers): http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/intrepid/alpha- ...
.torrent file (try to use this instead of direct download): http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/intrepid/alpha- ...
Virtualbox: http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads (sudo apt-get install virtualbox)
Keep in mind that there is no Live CD; this is a text-based installer like the "alternate" releases. Future Alphas should be available as Live CDs.- cawpin, on 06/30/2008, -0/+6Ubuntu's servers sure aren't loaded. I'm getting it at 2 MB/s, should be done in 6 minutes.
- Disease, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Well it is only an Alpha. Just wait for the final release.
- thtroyer, on 06/30/2008, -1/+18I would think that testing on real hardware is more useful, especially in finding bugs for hardware detection.
Testing in a VM would certainly catch software bugs -- usually problems in how the package was compiled/configured. - glinsvad, on 06/30/2008, -0/+5Full list of blueprints for Intrepid:
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/+ ...- Stroggoth, on 06/30/2008, -1/+2You mean Brownprints. Talk about a horrible color scheme! While it can be changed, you don't want people to immediately change it every time they install. Disgusting!
- iJessicaRabbit, on 06/30/2008, -3/+1Will do :) Downloading right now... I'm very excited!!!
- aidave, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Why isn't fixing Suspend/Resume a priority for Ubuntu?
You would think with Netbook they would care about this issue. Alot of future Ubuntu users are going to be in for an ugly surprise when they find their notebooks only resume 50% of the time.- dorkdork777, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/most_popular_ever/
That's the most popular idea on Ubuntu's official brainstorm site, as voted by over 5,000 people. They've got to be doing something about it.

- HoratioHellpop, on 06/30/2008, -9/+1and after testing, keep it in a VM, where it should be. Buggified sloppy-ass OS that it is.
- TheWindBlows, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3Yes i do keep windows in a virtual machine.
- rpgmaker, on 06/30/2008, -2/+7That new look sucks.
- Enendar, on 07/01/2008, -0/+2Junk the whole brown thing all together and go with colors people like as default.
- bangmalley, on 08/30/2008, -0/+1just tried it using virtualbox. 1st run (after install) will give some error, just restart virtualbox, and should be fine on 2nd run.
- cawpin, on 06/30/2008, -0/+6Ubuntu's servers sure aren't loaded. I'm getting it at 2 MB/s, should be done in 6 minutes.
- ArthurSucks, on 06/30/2008, -30/+16I like the new dark theme. I hope this is close to what the final theme will look like.
- cak3, on 06/30/2008, -9/+53I hope not, looks like poo
- ToadLeg, on 06/30/2008, -5/+21What is this obsession with excrement? There are a lot of things that are brown that are not *****, like wood. The theme looks like wood to me, and looks nice. I'm tired of themes that are bright, or even completely white, that are blinding, especially at night.
What if we didn't like blue themes because mold is blue? Or didn't like green themes because vomit can be green? Or didn't like red themes because blood is red? This is simply nonsense, and is the equivalent of looking at an ink blot test and saying "Why did you just draw my mother vaginally inserting a cactus while my sister rubs a fish on her nipple, you sick freak?"
(and no, a comment I made 4 posts back has nothing to do with this) - LeviTheSmith, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3Whats brown and sticky?
A stick!
- Sabretou, on 06/30/2008, -1/+6You've got to be kidding me.
- springo, on 06/30/2008, -1/+8It's too dark. It's harder to read white over brown than black over white...
Besides, I prefer a palette with silver, green or blue over a palette with orange and brown, but I guess that will never be Ubuntu's default choice.
- cak3, on 06/30/2008, -9/+53I hope not, looks like poo
- adderx99, on 06/30/2008, -17/+17Instructions on how to install the theme in Hardy Heron 8.04:
http://blog.alexrybicki.com/2008/06/how-to-install ...- farfromperfectx, on 06/30/2008, -4/+19Why?
- handheldchimp, on 06/30/2008, -4/+21Because then you could call it Horny Heron!
- xike, on 06/30/2008, -5/+23I happily drink all the Ubuntu kool-aid except when it comes to the theme. I'd have to be really drunk to think this looks good.
- zwaldowski, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1It's also brand new and kinda cobbled together in an afternoon. I do hope they provide a version of the theme in light and orange, though.
- AzureRise, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2You can just customize your own theme. You can completely change the look of your system in 2 minutes. Right down to the color everything is, the way windows look, and all the icons. Ubuntu is extremely customizable.
- tehjarvis, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3AzureRise, everyone know how customizable it is, and how easy it is to make it look good. The point is that it wouldn't take very long for the ubuntu devs to make or just choose a theme that didn't look like a diseased tiger dick.
- Theli, on 06/30/2008, -1/+5Didn't seem to work so well. The window decorators and the GNOME panels became gray. And using #FFFFFF white text on dark sewage background was a really bad idea. Quite frankly, I can't find a single positive thing to say about it.
- AzureRise, on 06/30/2008, -2/+3Customize the theme, it's simple and fast. It's not like the theme is the most important thing.
- sarixe, on 06/30/2008, -1/+1me, i use clearlooks
- srg13, on 06/30/2008, -5/+39I don't really like the theme - I'm perfectly happy with Clearlooks Classic (with a light grey background colour instead of the slightly beige grey), with Tango icons, and a black window border theme running on Emerald. Then I make the panels into one at the top, and add in AWN at the bottom.
This, with a nice background, looks awesome- Konstantino, on 06/30/2008, -1/+5I'm sure you can change it to the old style if you want in the system preferences.
- glinsvad, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2Old style meets blue:
sudo apt-get install blubuntu-theme
- glinsvad, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2Old style meets blue:
- Don_Gero, on 06/30/2008, -7/+7"I don't like the theme, but I'm happy with my fully personalized one."
Good for you, dumbass.- srg13, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3Nice how you just jumped to a random personal attack for no reason...
- enterneo, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1screenshot please...
- Konstantino, on 06/30/2008, -1/+5I'm sure you can change it to the old style if you want in the system preferences.
- Erfus, on 06/30/2008, -27/+167Who wants to look at brown all day? I really dislike Ubuntu's graphical direction in general.
- vibrokatana, on 06/30/2008, -21/+52...And it takes all of 2 seconds to change.
- xike, on 06/30/2008, -0/+54First impressions are a pretty big deal. I wish they chose colors that would be more widely accepted.
- neFariou5, on 06/30/2008, -1/+11unless you use a livecd
- Schmich, on 06/30/2008, -0/+13So why don't they change the default one to something more desirable? The brown is not a good environment to work in and when it comes to pure taste I think it's quite repelling.
- deadlikeoscar, on 06/30/2008, -7/+13Heck, changing it is part of the fun.
- chrisfnet, on 06/30/2008, -1/+36True, it's easy to change. But, I thought an aim was to get new users.. users coming from Windows and OS X. They want to see the pretty.
- punkcat, on 06/30/2008, -3/+6new users really? i lost all interest when i saw that brown.
- Disease, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3Exactly...
- kanabiis, on 06/30/2008, -4/+1If you really want pink and blue and purple, stick with the Mattel OS's its obvious that what you need is not a computer, but an appliance that checks your email and logs into MySpace.
- Twee, on 07/01/2008, -2/+1Mac OS X is not a Mattel OS. How else would you explain the vast number of FOSS ports to OS X?
- punkcat, on 06/30/2008, -3/+6new users really? i lost all interest when i saw that brown.
- arjie, on 06/30/2008, -0/+6You know, personally I stuck with the orange-brown when I installed it but the theme should come in three or four colours so changing it is a simple switch in the Appearance dialog box.
Yes, I know you can fiddle around and get the result by changing different window borders and icons and stuff but I mean just different colours. In the previous release, though there was a tab for colours, Human did not support changing them. That's wrong in two ways: first, the purpose isn't accomplished. Second, it's frustrating to switch to a colours tab that's all greyed out.
As someone who loves the rest of the distribution, I hope they've changed this.- Syphon8, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1The theme does come in different colours... There's a blue and purple version IIRC, and you can just alter the colour.
- Twee, on 07/01/2008, -1/+1WTF is IIRC? A new chat client for theme engines?
- dacheetah, on 07/01/2008, -0/+4What the ***** is WTF?
(If I Recall Correctly, IIRC is a common acronym for something.)
- longboarder543, on 06/30/2008, -1/+9It looks like an Ibex took a big dump on the old clearlooks theme.
- wigren, on 06/30/2008, -2/+1I actually like the theme, but I couldn't help but Digg that.
- Hangly, on 06/30/2008, -0/+10Yes. We have reached the limits of what brown can teach us.

- audiologic, on 06/30/2008, -15/+9All these "sexy" computers and products are getting to me. The words horny and sexy are meant for humans.
- flangepiece, on 06/30/2008, -3/+14don't tell me you've never considered humping your computer, you freak.
- audiologic, on 06/30/2008, -9/+1Thanks for the name calling.
Oh well. Have a good day. - flangepiece, on 06/30/2008, -0/+8Hey audiologic, no offense meant, and I'd hoped that the ludicrous nature of my reply would have suggested to you that I wasn't being serious.
But come on, when that hard drive light is winking at you suggestively, don't you at least get a semi on? - audiologic, on 06/30/2008, -3/+5Hey, it's cool. I know you weren't being serious.
Unemployment = bad morning = insecurity = take everything seriously & irrationally :)
As far as the lights, mmm...I'll think about it. - AndreGerber, on 06/30/2008, -4/+1flangepiece was joking...right?
- audiologic, on 06/30/2008, -9/+1Thanks for the name calling.

- svensksvamp, on 06/30/2008, -20/+4Looks nice. Would be cool if you could change the brown color to what ever you'd like.
- Sabretou, on 06/30/2008, -2/+9...
I see you've never come close to Linux before. - Grjemo, on 06/30/2008, -0/+7Guys, don't digg him down. Educate him. You *CAN* change the colours.
- Calibur, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1LOL .. he commented just to comment... oh wait ... *****!
- Sabretou, on 06/30/2008, -2/+9...
- scabbers, on 06/30/2008, -20/+8Did Microsoft pay them to make it brown?
- bratterscain, on 06/30/2008, -14/+80The scheme only makes it look like darker poop. And out of any color that can make me more productive, ***** brown is probably the worst color. Sorry, can't digg it, Ubuntu. I like contrast, not a dull boring monotone desktop. I know it's changeable but this, I'm sure, doesn't attract some newcomers who don't know. At least Vista and the new KDE, by default, have a decent color scheme and both of which I use. Gnome, for me, is just too simplistic and has less config options.
- srg13, on 06/30/2008, -2/+6"Gnome, for me, is just too simplistic and has less config options."
Have you used it? It's actually not bad - I never feel constricted by the options it has...
And by the way, this isn't Gnome's default theme - Clearlooks is, and that is quite a bit nicer than this. This is just an early draft (at least I hope it's a draft) of Ubuntu's default theme.- rlbond86, on 06/30/2008, -2/+1Really? Because I find it ridiculous that you can't even change the menus without an external program. Nautilus is a piece of ***** compared to Konqueror, and the GTK file navigation dialog boxes are just annoying to use in general. No thanks, I will stick to KDE.
- rowjimmy, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3@rlbond86 - good for you. personally, kde is WAY too clunky & bloated for me, but then I use the terminal far more often than the menus or configuration utilities or any of that stuff (with the exception of firestarter, which i've come to love as an alternative to manually managing iptables, and the "quick-launch" icons or whatever they are called, that you can add to your panel to one-click launch pidgin, swiftweasel, terminal, or whatever). that's what's so great about [most] *nix distros, though - the fact that they give the user that choice, and the ability to tweak the hell out of anything else if no choice particularly appeals..
- srg13, on 06/30/2008, -2/+6"Gnome, for me, is just too simplistic and has less config options."
- americamatrix, on 06/30/2008, -13/+48Theme is too dark....
- flangepiece, on 06/30/2008, -9/+22Theme is not permanent. Theme can be changed.
- prophetpimp, on 06/30/2008, -2/+11MS got a lot of flack for the stupid Fisher Price Blue XP theme so even for linux that argument is legit. It you are trying to convince people to use a new OS it better look Pretty. If this is whats its gonna look like then i would rather get mint Linux.
- srg13, on 06/30/2008, -2/+7"MS got a lot of flack for the stupid Fisher Price Blue XP theme"
But that was mainly because the extent to which you could customise it was to pick one of the other two colour schemes... Unless you wanted to crack that dll that lets you install unsigned themes.
At least with Ubuntu (and most other distros), there are better looking (imho) themes included, or you can easily install any other of the hundreds available on the internet. Or you could just change the colours of this theme in the Appearance preferences.
But I do agree that this is sub par and should not be the default in the final release.
- flangepiece, on 06/30/2008, -9/+22Theme is not permanent. Theme can be changed.
- StoopidPirate, on 06/30/2008, -13/+4dugg because i like the word horny.....
the os is cool too.i guess. - BuzzFriendly, on 06/30/2008, -6/+25With all of the possibilities Ubuntu brings to the table the only thing people seem to be concerned about is the theme.
- alexforcefive, on 06/30/2008, -1/+11Well, I'm not so interested in sub-notebook optimisations or usb installation. Faster boot time will be nice, though
- Beto0707, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1Is your boot time really that slow...?
- alexforcefive, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1Not really, but it could always be faster! The only part that bugs me is the grub 1.5 section, but I think I read they'll be getting rid of that too
- iJessicaRabbit, on 06/30/2008, -0/+6Maybe a nice theme = bait to get more people to try Ubuntu? If it works then I'm all for talking about fun themes :)
- BuhSnarf, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1I think this is probably because it's the thing that sticks out like a sore thumb. These days there are such hardly any big "technological advantages" between distributions that a default theme can be a deal breaker. Let's face it, the days when using one distribution because it could do x, y or z without compiling when distribution b couldn't are gone. Now, it's who ships the most sane default options for your taste.
- silfiriel, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2you probably have a point there, but you know how it goes... first impression's the most important
- pedepy, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1problem is, it's ***** butt ugly ..
it looks like when you took win95 and dorked around the 'colors' tab of the display menu
- alexforcefive, on 06/30/2008, -1/+11Well, I'm not so interested in sub-notebook optimisations or usb installation. Faster boot time will be nice, though
- fragsta, on 06/30/2008, -6/+23Too much dark. It wouldn't be so bad if just the top and bottom bars were that colour, but everything is, and it just looks too dark and uncomfortable.
I'm gonna stick with Blubuntu: http://brentroos.com/2006/07/29/blubuntu/ - pavelmah, on 06/30/2008, -5/+20I hope this design doesn't make the final release. There wer some good concept design before the hardy release, Why don't they take inspiration from there? I really liked the gelatin concept.
http://www.linuxhaxor.net/2008/01/02/ubuntu-mockup ... - hamish, on 06/30/2008, -9/+4ahhh crap, i just installed 8.04 last night :(
- cawpin, on 06/30/2008, -0/+18This is just an Alpha release. You don't want to run it on your main machine.
- TheCorroborator, on 06/30/2008, -0/+18.04 is still the major current version, and will be for a while - this is just an early alpha release of 8.10 so don't sweat ;)
- koft, on 06/30/2008, -15/+43looks like *****.
- 1timeuser, on 06/30/2008, -1/+3agreed. function is great... but why they cant figure out that no one likes the brown is beyond me.
- IHaveIssues, on 06/30/2008, -2/+6I don't need all the visual bits, I just want everything to snap-to when I click it. That's why I switched to Xubuntu and I'm loving it.
- depro9, on 06/30/2008, -9/+4Oh yeah baby, look @ that interface IM SO HOT right now!
- InorganicMatter, on 06/30/2008, -11/+5They finally got rid of the default poop brown theme? No way!! Took long enough.
- YourDoom123, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1yea...they changed it to... darker *****?
- donkeySays, on 06/30/2008, -8/+2HORNY for Ubuntu?! Dirk Diggler would be a better codename, in that case.
- bigtimslim, on 06/30/2008, -2/+8from the mentioned colorizeMe scripts readme:
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Open a terminal window, and browse to the location of the desired script. (for example, 'cd /ColorizeMe-0.4/Clearlooks-Style'
2. Type the name of the install script, and add the desired color-scheme like this: './install -brave'

- Syphon8, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2Less brown.
- perfectska04, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1The instructions mentioned above are for artwork scripts unrelated to Ubuntu's official artwork or any and all shades of brown.

- salomejones, on 06/30/2008, -2/+30Its the same look! Its all the same look! Doesn't anybody notice this? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills! I INVENTED THE PIANO KEY NECKTIE!!!
- freedomknight, on 06/30/2008, -4/+6Seriously, pumpkin theme ?
- repick3, on 06/30/2008, -10/+7Least the title is honest about linux users /=
- VVho, on 06/30/2008, -4/+125Can everyone chill out about the theme please, or at least find out a bit about the process before screaming you don't like it!
The Ubuntu Art Team decided that it was necessary to TEST dark themes so we could find the BUGS to report to application developers (unlike just changing the look of the buttons, going to a dark theme requires some applications that don't 'expec' dark themes to be updated to be compatible). The idea was so that IF A USER or distrubtion wants to have a dark theme then we can make sure there aren’t any problems doing that (until recently it has been very problematic) and it will look lovely
Because the Ubuntu alphas have fairly good developer visability it was felt that running a dark theme on early alphas would be the best way to achieve this… So, if you see specific bugs, post them in Launchpad or Gnome bugzilla. If you just don’t like it, chill out and it will be different soon :)
So, in summary. This is a test. We want to have bugs reported agains _specific_ instances of things not looking right. (ie "theme is brown and ugly" is NOT useful)- booyahbitch, on 06/30/2008, -26/+2Your tactless defense of the dark Ubuntu theme is reminiscent of MAC fan bois when their beloved Apple platform is given negative feedback. Obviously people think the new theme looks like a bloody stool...get over it and get back to work on something people want or suffer the death of a million diggers!!!
- haterofps3, on 06/30/2008, -1/+13That was pointless, all he did was point out that this is an Alpha not a beta not a RC not anything other than what it is.
please stfu and gtfo - booyahbitch, on 06/30/2008, -8/+0How's about you go ***** yourself with a chainsaw?!? If I wanted to be told to stfu, I would be over on slashdot.
- marvinmatthew, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3Dude, you're saying that you don't want to be cursed at- and then you go and cuss at someone else?
Grow up.
- haterofps3, on 06/30/2008, -1/+13That was pointless, all he did was point out that this is an Alpha not a beta not a RC not anything other than what it is.
- scabbers, on 06/30/2008, -7/+11The post says: "first look"... we looked, and we didn't like it. This is what happens when blog freaks can't wait and have to start making digg stories about about 'first looks' of something that's in testing.
- prophetpimp, on 06/30/2008, -1/+32If thats the explanation then i am cool with that.
- Schmich, on 06/30/2008, -5/+3I thought changing themes was easy so couldn't they release something good looking for once (I've never like the default themes) and then have the devs set this dark theme on their own?
- HoratioHellpop, on 06/30/2008, -10/+1Test. Failed. It looks like poop ... and, going on past experience with Ubutttu .. it will work like poop.
- netneutrality, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Then thank you for that. I've occasionally wanted to use dark themes on Windows, even jet black. But *always* there are tons of bits that insist on using black as the text color for window elements and you can't bloody read them.
- booyahbitch, on 06/30/2008, -26/+2Your tactless defense of the dark Ubuntu theme is reminiscent of MAC fan bois when their beloved Apple platform is given negative feedback. - chetanthaker, on 06/30/2008, -15/+9I bet 5 bucks on Ubuntu 9.04 be codenamed Jackass Jackrabbit
- Lollerskater, on 06/30/2008, -1/+3"Jazzy Jackrabbit", 's all I'm saying.
- iJessicaRabbit, on 06/30/2008, -1/+2lol that would be awesome.
- trackerbishop, on 06/30/2008, -18/+2what a waste of a release. ive used ubuntu since feisty and if you want ubuntu to look good you have to dl different themes and switch the font to microsoft's default font, their theme is just ugly.
ubuntu's other flaws:
-failed business model. users want out of the box functionality, otherwise you wont make a dent in MS' hold.
-stubborn developers who wont bind task manager/system monitor to ctrl+alt+delete
-wireless never seems to work right. i had an inspiron 6400 and a dell broadcom 1390 wifi card and it worked perfect in hardy heron but not feisty, then i upgraded to a vostro 1500 with the same wifi card and i had to use crappy ndiswrapper which really SUCKS.
-ubuntu doesn't have urquan masters or startup manager installed by default, you have to add them yourself.
-ubuntu hardy came with firefox beta and you couldnt get adblock or google toolbar.- Loonatickle, on 06/30/2008, -2/+1This is just a MS lover troll. If you really used Ubuntu (or any linux distro) since Feisty you wouldn't be making these complaints.
- trackerbishop, on 06/30/2008, -3/+1i have hardy heron on my vostro right now and xp as a dual boot w/ grub so dont give me any of that. why not try replying to my points? Take a basic data/business modeling class and you'll learn that the user expects things to work out of the box, if you want to hit the mainstream you have to dumb things down and simplify as much as possible. if im trying to write a paper, do research, or run my business, i dont have the TIME or interest in learning how to sudo apt-get xxxxxxxx.
i dont want to be building kernels or finding funky workarounds to get my scanner or mp3 player to work.
So, Canonical - rather than changing the shade of brown every 6 months, work on getting better driver support and making your OS more functional. Do what the user wants, not what your arrogant developers want. - Ramble, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Right, because who wants working wireless?

- raublekick, on 06/30/2008, -2/+1A waste of a release based on your distaste for the theme? Oh ok. Personally I don't like the theme either, but it's easy to change and I don't really like ANY distros' default theme.
You other points...?
-For me it is OOB functionality. For a lot of people this is true. You reveal why it isn't for you...
-Not that big of a deal for most people. Easy to do, and plenty of other options (put it as a shortcut on the panel, add the system monitor applet, use GnomeDo to open it, etc...)
-Broadcom is a troublesome chipset. If it wasn't working for you, why did you buy the same thing again? Dell offers Intel wireless chipsets that work well. Initially not knowing about Broadcom problems is a reasonable complaint. But buying it again? That's your problem.
-Most people will never need startup manager, and why are you complaining about a game not being installed by default?- trackerbishop, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1-most people need dualboot to switch to and from xp. its very valuable. in feisty, ubuntu wanted you to go and make changes manually by editing the script files. it gets old, FAST.
- like i said ebfore - broadcom worked perfectly for me with the inspiron 6400 but when i got a vostro it didnt work. you wouldev thought since dell sells ubuntu they would have worked work canonical a bit more?
- shouldnt ubuntu be doing a bit more LITTLE things to woo xp users? put the damn trashcan on the desktop, dont make me go into gedit or whatever to do it, or look it up on google. i dont even remember how i did it, its been so long.

- afallucco, on 06/30/2008, -7/+16Make the theme glossy...
- seraph582, on 06/30/2008, -1/+4ugh no - that's hideous looking! I assume you mean like Mac? ick!
- baalzebub, on 06/30/2008, -13/+4ubuntu sure does NOT make me horny, it makes me appreciate distros like Slackware...
- Hypersapien, on 06/30/2008, -1/+10I guess 'Iguana' was too obvious
- clonek, on 06/30/2008, -9/+9That theme looks hideous to say the least.
- dennisnajee, on 06/30/2008, -3/+11Anything that helps move us away from Microsoft is a wonderful thing. Thank God for open source.
- GreenDots, on 06/30/2008, -10/+5Buried because I have ATI.
Old theme, new theme. Who cares if it doesn't work.- Loonatickle, on 06/30/2008, -6/+3Stop buying ATI cards if they don't have adequate linux drivers. Or buy them, bury linux-related topics, and complain.

If it isn't supported already, it should be. ATI may be the video card to have :) - earthforce1, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3I ditched ATI cards about a year ago for this very reason, (NVidia cards just worked out of the box, ATI was hit & miss) but now that their hardware specs are fully open, I expect the the pendulum to swing back to ATI. I would like to put more pressure on NVidia to do the same, so we can make full use of their cards 3D capabilities.
Note to NVidia:
We don't need your trade secrets, just documented hardware please! - billynomates1, on 06/30/2008, -1/+2Have you tried Envy? It's in the repositories.
- Ademan, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Why's he getting dugg down? I've been declaring the dangers of envy for a long time, but the creator worked directly with the ubuntu team to fix the things it tended to break, i still wouldn't recommend it unless the restricted driver manager isn't working for you, but it's supposed to be quite good now.
- HubbertWins, on 06/30/2008, -11/+6Ugly ass color scheme.
- Rudegar, on 06/30/2008, -6/+2cool
but agree that theme looks like something i grew up in in the 70's :S
but that could be changed so no biggy - bionh, on 06/30/2008, -3/+1preliminary prerelease eh?
- MMaster23, on 06/30/2008, -12/+13WOW .. talk about fugly..
And people laughed at the Zune brown .. at least that had a little bit of class (just a tiny little bit).
This is just plain old fugly - krisscofield, on 06/30/2008, -7/+6Experimental visual style? It's the same Ubuntu wallpaper with grey windows. You can do that in Appearance. Yeah, so experimental.
- leejarratt, on 06/30/2008, -3/+0You must be color blind.
- John6000, on 06/30/2008, -2/+1When I clicked onto this article I was expecting a change from the brown and orange turd colours : but nope..
- truspect0r, on 06/30/2008, -17/+11WTF is wrong with their eyes? No wonder ubuntu's going down the drain.
- seandfeeney, on 06/30/2008, -12/+8Oh god that looks ugly... Thank god for the ease of theme changing.
- ThinkDave, on 06/30/2008, -8/+3Ugggggllllyyyy... that is all.
What on earth are they thinking. - MrViklund, on 06/30/2008, -7/+7Who cares. it's all about the hype with Ubuntu... And it comes in brown! Huuh!
- ronyu02, on 06/30/2008, -2/+3They took the ibex photo right off Wikipedia. How do I know? I had to look up what an ibex is.
- richbl, on 06/30/2008, -8/+4Hmmm... looks like Ibex dung...
- charlesray, on 06/30/2008, -10/+7It looks like poop.
- 4DFX, on 06/30/2008, -9/+4Anyone made a Brainstorm idea telling them to dump the ugly colors yet?
- Amiga501, on 06/30/2008, -5/+5Not gonna happen. That would be like suggesting Gimp use a name not reminiscent of a leather fetish faggit from Pulp Fiction. Some open source software is driven mostly by ego, in this case Mark Shuttlecock's love of all things doo-doo brown.
- mindracer, on 06/30/2008, -5/+4They can leave the theme whatever color they want, as long as they fix dual monitor support so we dont have to go fiddle in the config files to get it working...
- 3leggedHorse, on 06/30/2008, -4/+1Wandering Wildebeest.
