How I got banned from Digg.

cjmillisock.com — 15,000 votes in less than 24 hours, and then I got banned. Here's how/why. Also, a backup of what captivated you Diggers for 15 hours straight before it got deleted.

Until something is concretely said or done, it's just going to be a virtual game of tag until someone eventually gives up. And I seriously doubt the Digg community will be the first to blink.

      How I got banned from Digg
      It all started last night. I'm reading my RSS feeds and I come across an article on Digg.

      Spread this number. Now.
      *******(Edited out by LordBen I don't want to be banned others have posted the number). It's the HD-DVD processing key you can use to decrypt and play most HD-DVD movies in Linux. Movie studios are going ballistic over this leak, so Digg the story up and make it reach the front page.

      Are you serious? That's awesome! Somebody found a key that allows Linux users watch HD-DVDs! Naturally, I wanted to find out more, so I clicked the link. Much to my dismay, that story had been deleted from Digg already. Why is this story gone? Who deleted it? How dare they?! They can't censor that kind of stuff can they? I go back to my Google Reader, copy and paste the entire thing into a new story, and resubmit it.

      I went to sleep, and didn't think much about what I had done.

      Until morning.

      Upon reading my RSS feeds again, and come across MY story, on the front page of Digg!



      I click the link and there's over 15,000 votes! I felt like a hero reading all the comments that people were writing. Comments like:

      * It's times like these when all I can say is: I love digg.
      * OMG THIS DAY IS BEAUTIFUL!!! I WANT TO HUG MY FELLOW GEEKS!!!!

      Other comments say that Digg itself was down for 10 minutes because of the rate this story was getting dugg. People were getting 404s when trying to reach Digg. Even Duggmirror went down.

      So I'm reading the comments, and every once in a while I'd refresh the page a few times to see how high the digg count would climb. And then it happened. First, the comments all disappeared, and then the story itself disappeared. And then, my digg account disappeared. My account is no longer valid.

      There you have it folks, if you submit a story that Digg needs to censor, your account too will be deleted.

      But wait. There's more.

      My friend Chris Haley was smart enough to save the entire page at almost the height of its fame. At 15,492 Diggs, HERE IS THE FULL ARTICLE IN ALL ITS GLORY. All the comments are there. You can even expand the hidden comments. Thanks Chris!

      Digg has censored us!

      Digg has decided to squelch out all dissent about their policy of censorship by deleting most of the threads about it, and burying the rest.

      Digg wants users less active in the community to go about their day as if nothing was happening, wondering what the hell is up with these random numbers everyone is posting all over.

      Don’t sit idle! Digg was built by the users, the same users they are trying to silence, not for spreading a number, but for questioning censorship and dissent. Don’t let discussion continue until digg either addresses this issue and creates a new social contract with the users, or bans each and every one of us.

And until I see a court notice saying you must take down articles with the number well then that means your activly censoring it digg and thats not right. I agree if you get a court order saying it must go down then take it down, but don't just give in like you are currently.

    I think i'll make something with the number 5 as its decryption key and start suing anyone who uses the number 5...

    • mcduckov, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Look, most of us are just geeks/nerds/whatever who sit at our desks all day and hang out with other geeks/etc. When you hit it big like a KRose you start to move around in a different sphere. All of a sudden you want to be invited not just to a cool club but you want to be invited to an ultra-exclusive club with celebrities and wealthy billionaires. To get into that particular circle you need to "play ball" to a certain extent. How would it look if KEVIN'S WEBSITE was bending over a whole industry and railing it in the ass? Well it looks freakin GREAT if you love Linux more than your girlfriend's boobies. However it looks a little less cool if you actually want to go to parties where those CEOs will be present.

      Bear in mind that despite how much time and effort you put into digg and how many users there are it is still just Kevin's website and even if he isn't legally responsible for what is on it he sure as hell is socially responsible.

    This represents more than just HD-DVD. It represents free speech. History shows that despite every effort of any organization or government, the free flow of information will ultimately prevail. It may just be a code to most, but to me it's an advance for consumerist rights, and not getting pushed around by any business with enough money to do it.

    Now this crap. If they lose the old tech tv fan base which helped them launch this site, and there podcast? Wounder what be left?
    Still watch the show but starting to get bored with it. Use to care about Kevin's opinion on stuff. Now not so much.

They're deleting, burying, and censoring stories for containing a string of 16 hexidecimal numerals. That's waking up a lot of people to how Digg really operates. It has certainly woke me up. Now I KNOW there's funny manipulation of which stories appear on the front page.
