- Random832, on 10/10/2007, -0/+32Just about every case _except_ this one needs a screwdriver holder. This one needs a holder for a spare roll of duct tape.
- Frecklefoot, on 10/10/2007, -7/+29You can tell the guy's a real Brainiac. Not only does he hate Mormons, he can't even spell it right.
- arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -15/+2Where does the mormon thing come in? I didn't see anything in the pic about it.

- quikhack, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5You got it all wrong. He's not saying mormons... he was trying to type "more mans" He's saying screw more manuals. The way he builds computers, you never need to rtfm. Little disappointed he is trying the more command instead of the less command. You know what they say... Less is More, but better.
- nimawin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4is it just me or the box says LONG LIVE LFNUX?
- arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -15/+2Where does the mormon thing come in? I didn't see anything in the pic about it.
- EbilPhish, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12That duct tape is going to attract dust or will at least leave a sticky residue, also likely to attract dust.
Be careful about using tape in a cpu case.
I once used celotape to group together molex cables (why does one plug have all of its wires separate and not in a sieve), that wasn't so bad as after a while it went brittle and flaky, but it did leave behind brown powder. I also put a little furry penguin in the case, that got dusty very quick.- TheAkolyte, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2I doubt he uses the computer, lol/
- Random832, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Lots of dust goes in and out of the case all the time - the fact that it will stick to the penguin or tape doesn't mean it's more likely to stick to the fans and stuff which are what need to be clear of dust.
And, you should have used electrical tape for the cables.
- veracon, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Long live Lfnux!
- NgrHader, on 10/10/2007, -0/+60I give it a week before the case finally catches on fire

- EarlOfLade, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Sure... It's called a "laptop"!
- s1mph0ny, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You must have pretty big feet if you can fit a 15.4" screen in your shoebox.
- EarlOfLade, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Sure... It's called a "laptop"!
- Biznack, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I used to make lots of these and have them hidden when my parents would take my "computer" so I wouldn't be on it all night long... It's far cooler when you cut holes for individual buses on the mobo. Gets quite hot no matter how you do it though.

Easily the worst typos on the Internet.- PJ2889, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2It's phonetic. When read from left to right it becomes "zero dollars."
- kingfoot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2no because "$1" means "1 dollar", but (and i do this sometimes too) when you are saying it in your head as you type it, you said like "one dollar" so you type it "1$".
- crushfan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Actually, it depends on language. But you're right for English.
- s1mph0ny, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1English US and AU. They're the only countries that use the $ sign to represent money that I know of.

- RedRummy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+27I'll get you one for £50

- s1mph0ny, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I'll sell you my dual PIII (slot!) Ml-370 that I have sitting in a cardboard box here. It's a little heavy to ship this way though.
- Jorlwind, on 10/16/2007, -1/+200Hell, if it gets the job done who am I to complain?
I just hope it has good cooling. He basically wrapped potentially hot parts in a tinderbox and sealed it with duct-tape.- RedRummy, on 10/16/2007, -1/+8its got a case fan in there too.
- NJank, on 10/16/2007, -0/+29which, without proper ventilation, will just add to the heat load... my convection oven has a fan, too.
- shavenlunatic, on 10/16/2007, -13/+1er, the fan doesn't actually "generate" any heat.. it just circulates it and spreads the heat out rather than having heat pockets
- xtmno3, on 10/16/2007, -0/+24So, all case fans are magically frictionless and 100% efficient? If not, it generates additional heat.
- s1mph0ny, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3http://www.afrotechmods.com/submitted/gCube/DCP_0802.jpg
The case fan does have a cut-out in the back. Given that he has it pointing in the right direction, it would help the case stay cooler, but probably still hot enough to be a fire hazard.
- shavenlunatic, on 10/16/2007, -13/+1er, the fan doesn't actually "generate" any heat.. it just circulates it and spreads the heat out rather than having heat pockets
- BushLin, on 11/06/2007, -0/+1Who is digging up RedRummy's comment? He's clearly talking nonsense, case fans provide ventilation! I'd also point out that the heat in your oven isn't provided by the fan, the fan distributes the heat.
- BushLin, on 11/06/2007, -0/+1Sorry RedRummy, I meant NJack and it's been dug down. Sorry for a retarded first post!
- NJank, on 10/16/2007, -0/+29which, without proper ventilation, will just add to the heat load... my convection oven has a fan, too.
- Trax91, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23Poke holes?
- rjam710, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1Well I hope it has terrible cooling; can't wait to see this go down in flames!
- SloppyJoe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Paper doesn't catch fire until around 450F the compy would die long before that.
- s1mph0ny, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm sure that depends on the humidity.
- idonthack, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No it doesn't. If core temp surpasses 450F (which it would have to do to heat paper to 450 or above) then it WILL melt. Humidity has nothing to do with it.
- davidrools, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3all water will magically vaporize at around 212 degrees F
- Szandor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9According to Bradbury, I believe it is 451F.
- shinynew, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well i guess its a good thing that even if it did get to 451F its still cardboard and probably takes a bit more.
- s1mph0ny, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm sure that depends on the humidity.
- RedRummy, on 10/16/2007, -1/+8its got a case fan in there too.

- timjbart, on 10/10/2007, -2/+153Isn't that a fire hazard?
- RedRummy, on 10/10/2007, -6/+37why?
how often does you computer burst into flames?- caled, on 10/10/2007, -4/+60are we talking macbooks or dells, here?
- Disjunto, on 10/10/2007, -0/+57how often is your computer made of cardboard?

- bringmewater, on 10/10/2007, -14/+4It's a fire hazard and also going to radiate you . Metal cases are meant to stop the fire and radiation. Just not a good idea.
- richardiscool, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19Hahahahahahahahahaha.
- TheLD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8The individual components like DVD drives are shielded against radiation.
I think the main threat is static electricity - rouslan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Also don't forget about EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) and the radiation from cosmic rays which could corrupt RAM.
- Asclepius, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4What? Nobody else has a computer that runs on uranium?
- shinynew, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Alright, well when my computer catches on fire and 'radiates' me, you know where I will be looking for the water.
- usherzx, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2I may be wrong but I think the reason they don't make computers out of paper and cardboard is because it increases the potential of a fire, and who WANTS a fire?

- vastrightwing, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I assume he's added an over heat detector and/or smoke detector which will release a nearby fire extinguisher.

Who hates superheroes? It's not American. - oscarsonthepond, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I've never met a Morman (including myself) who didn't like being called a Mormon. The official title is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and according to the AP style guide (and other news outlets) the media is supposed to call it by its full name or the "LDS Church," but I've never met a single person who was offended/cared/found anything wrong with someone calling them a Mormon.

i didn't pay for my version of windows- geminitojanus, on 10/16/2007, -1/+20You paid for it even if you pirated it; Microsoft doesn't care if the few pirate their OS, you're just re-enforcing their dominance.
It'll come back to bite you in the end though; one of these days they're going to slip some crap into Windows that starts forwarding Microsoft details about your hardware, Windows Genuine Supreme Convenience Package, and when they come knocking at your door asking for a check*, it's going to be a lot harder to deny them their payout.

not oem and didn't pay a cent for it. They can slip whatever they want into it, i have windows update disabled. So good luck with them trying to slip something in- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1How clever. Windows update disabled! Why not turn off your firewall while you are at it?
- carl25, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2already done, all my ports are open as well
dmz ftw
- geminitojanus, on 10/16/2007, -1/+20You paid for it even if you pirated it; Microsoft doesn't care if the few pirate their OS, you're just re-enforcing their dominance.

- lNSTlGAT0R, on 10/10/2007, -12/+7That is a lot of work and a stupid look just to save $20... pretty lame.
- gavintlgold, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4If he wanted to be cheap, he could have just used an old case off the street like I do... ;)
- TheLD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6lNSTlGAT0R: think you are missing the point of the site

- smacksaw, on 10/17/2007, -2/+83I've always been perturbed by the Mormons irrational hate of Open Source and their constant alliances with Microsoft.
- usherzx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16I like the way you talk.
- m3t00, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Polygamy not only rhymes with monopoly they are the same ideology, one applied to computers and one to biology. Open Source must seem like what happens when Mr. Mormon leaves for work and the wives invite the milkman in for cookies.
- BritishGolgo13, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1No...no they do not rhyme...pole-ig-ah-me != mon-op-oh-lee.
- m3t00, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Only the last syllable has to rhyme to be good enough for Rock&Roll or Blues. Maybe you are into Classical or bebop Jazz. That would really raise the bar for this site.
- BritishGolgo13, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1No...no they do not rhyme...pole-ig-ah-me != mon-op-oh-lee.
- arcticsoft, on 10/10/2007, -7/+4What! Im a mormon. I love Ubuntu. And Polygamy is a joke now, mormons have not had polygamy for more than 120 years. Plus Ive been thinking of changing to muslim, 72 virgins is sounding good to me :)
- lazyeyesam, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5but sadly not as good to them...
- twinprism, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Speaking of an irrational fear of open source, couldn't the same be said of the US Government?
- Lemm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That 's because if Mormon had been Open Source, there would have been too many people filing bug reports.
- Stitzu, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21Haha, this isn't as bad as my server... doesn't even get cardboard box... just a bunch of hardware lying on the floor under my desk ;)

DELL Boxes ironically make great PC cases, flat panel display boxes are just big enough for your system.
FedEx has some nice 'PC cases' for free too...- rootstyle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I once saw a hobo sleeping in a Dell server box on Bay street, downtown Toronto. It surely made my day. There is no doubt in my mind that the box provided shelter longer than the server provided uptime.

- orvtech, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1humm yes, software raid, but remember that you will be limited to the USB speed, so there is no sence to put a raid 0 on it, also i dont see how you would set up a raid 5 1+0 or 0+1 ? a usb hup? i dont know how reliable would that be. so i think if you really need your data safe you could setup a raid1 array.

- Spuy767, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2I helped a guy build a cardboard computer once, this one is positively hideous by comparison. If I'd have knows I could get on Digg's front page by doing something so mundane, I'd have posted pics of it years ago.
- freddobbs, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3As I've always said, it's all about who you know on Digg.com and nothing about the quality of the news you have. If this lamo picture can be popular on Digg, my theory is proven.
- bovester, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Uhhh you, sir, are retarded. This is ***** hilarious.
If you don't think so, then you really don't belong here.- chrismgtis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It is not your responsibility or business who belongs here and it is our own business whether or not we think anything is funny. Maybe you should leave, since you think it's your job to tell us when we should or shouldn't be here?
- shuffle2, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2...I think bovester just proved fred's point....
- rootstyle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Whats really sad (and I'm prepared to get buried) is that this is apparently news. I remember when *kids* did this for their linux boxen nearly 10 years ago, and it was only mildly funny then.
- loudintl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I agree. Who hasn't made a ***** cardboard box mod anyway? Is it because LINUX is in the title?

- spidoman, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Or any other religion? :P
- aintitso, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1They are 80-90% Republican. That's reason enough. Aside from that, they are obnoxious as hell and believe in ludicrous, demonstrably false things like native Americans being descendants of Jews. My wife is an ex-Mormon, thank heaven for that!
- oscarsonthepond, on 10/10/2007, -0/+480-90% - talk about demonstratably false. Tell that to Harry Reid or to Jim Matheson, whom Utah elected to Congress. Or better yet tell it to Berkeley Bunker, Martha Hughes Cannon, Larry EchoHawk, Eni F.H. Faleomavaega, Ralph Harding, Grant Hill, David S. King, William H. King, Elbert Duncan Thomas, Stewart Udall, or Tom Udall just to name a few Mormon Democrat politicians.
Also, last time I checked it didn't say anywhere in Mormon scripture that Native-Americans have the same DNA as Jews. In fact the Book of Mormon explicitly teaches that there were people in the Americas long before any Jews came here. I hope you find joy in attempting to tear down a religion you know nothing about. - domomike, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3You got owned, you intolerant idiot.

- shellacked, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Wow. It makes me sad that people still think like this in 2007.
It's rare that I can say this about an entire class of people but I swear this is true: Every Mormon that I've worked with has been hard working, dedicated, honest, and without the slightest shred of indecency. They've also all treated me with the same respect that they treat each other, despite the fact that I'm a beer-swilling foul mouthed atheist.
Obviously I haven't met every Mormon on the planet but based on the ones I've met, there's nothing to hate- clackerd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0agreed. i grew up with mormon friends, and despite their family being sickingly "normal," they are for the most part good people. it is just like the south park episode - you can either concentrate on all the weird things they once believed in, or you can take them at face value for what they are - usually good people with a penchant for spreading the word of joseph smith and jesus at 9:30 in the morning on saturdays.
* although my mormon friends came up with some seriously deviant practical jokes that were truly impressive, if not sinful, on a few occasions.
- clackerd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0agreed. i grew up with mormon friends, and despite their family being sickingly "normal," they are for the most part good people. it is just like the south park episode - you can either concentrate on all the weird things they once believed in, or you can take them at face value for what they are - usually good people with a penchant for spreading the word of joseph smith and jesus at 9:30 in the morning on saturdays.
