- greggish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Soon all linux distros will be a live cd/dvd by default.
- berwiki, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1No they won't. They might have a Live "Installer", but there is too much performance gained from a local install. Not to mention, people generally change existing files/directories.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Not nessarily.. The desktop Linux's will probably be, but quite a lot will remain text-based installers, simply so you can install it on old machines easily. Also, for servers, theres really no point in a live-CD installer.
The current live-CD installers are still a little unreliable (Well, just "too young"), for example, my laptop screws up with the Ubuntu live CD isntaller, so I use the server install (Which is just like the pre-ubuntu-5.10 installer, a text based installer, which is very similar to the offical Debian installer) and then apt-get the stuff I need.
To be honest, I don't really see the point in the live-CD installers. I just want to install the OS, and start using it, theres no need to start doing stuff, then install, the continue. It's nice not having to download a seperate ISO to try it out, the a different one to install it, but something like a boot-time selection to choose between the live enviroment, and an installer that won't have the added (unnessairy) bloat of X and GNOME would be nice
