Ubuntu 8.10 Has a Brand New Wallpaper
news.softpedia.com — Here's another sneak peak at an alternative to the Intrepid Ibex wallpaper:
- 1046 diggs
- digg it
- munikho, on 10/11/2008, -22/+11can they please use the original from rico? this just looks like spilled water on a dirty floor...
- spikeb, on 10/11/2008, -5/+31i think it is stunningly beautiful. bout damn time.
- gyrfalcon, on 10/12/2008, -1/+1Looks like crap... OpenSuse at least has a semi-professional wallpaper.
Then again who cares. Just get rid of the wallpaper and use a flat background.
- xeic, on 10/11/2008, -3/+41The bests Ubuntu wallpapers are in: /usr/share/pixmaps/backgrounds/cosmos
Hellix nebula FTW!!- RedS0x, on 10/12/2008, -0/+5Ooooh I didn't know about that...nice.
- rpgmaker, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2The new version are going to be great also. So much better than the past LTS release (just try out the beta to see for yourself)
- utdiscant, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2I use these wallpapers of Lorenz-attractors which I made myself. They are released under Creative Commons, so feel free to use them.
http://www.dyberemening.dk/blog/?p=360
- christopherRB, on 10/11/2008, -8/+21at first, I thought it was a guy with a big nose.
- al3xman, on 10/12/2008, -0/+5I thought it was Freddy Krueger.
- azazel00, on 10/12/2008, -0/+3I honestly though an Ibex was some sort of angry chipmunk with horns. Turns out it is a goat with horns.
Who knew? - bradmoreland, on 10/12/2008, -0/+0ubuntu.il?
- compacho, on 10/11/2008, -5/+24Getting better, but not great.
- ambiescent, on 10/12/2008, -3/+0Here is that artwork as it was *intended* to look like by the artist.
http://www.behance.net/Gallery/Intrepid-Ibex/13289 ... - ambiescent, on 10/12/2008, -0/+3Oops. http://www.behance.net/Gallery/Intrepid-Ibex/13289 ...
- abbathdoom, on 10/12/2008, -5/+3It kinda sums up Ubuntu that they took a really nice piece of artwork and photoshoped it to be more like a brown piece of dirt. Great.
The original is far better. - Mejogid, on 10/12/2008, -0/+4The original is better as a piece of art, but good art does not a good wallpaper make. A default wallpaper can't be too colourful or it becomes unnecessarily distracting (although plenty of people disregard that with wallpapers they chose).
- gyrfalcon, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1"The original is better as a piece of art, but good art does not a good wallpaper make."
Second verse same as the first.... You're 100% correct, and I think this is a very poor wallpaper choice.
- gyrfalcon, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1"The original is better as a piece of art, but good art does not a good wallpaper make."
- theodenking, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2You're telling me. A couple of weeks a go we were being told to look forward to an whole new modern theme and now we're supposed to get excited about a new wallpaper?
- ambiescent, on 10/12/2008, -3/+0Here is that artwork as it was *intended* to look like by the artist.
- enlligghtenment, on 10/11/2008, -5/+9I like it.... but I like better the dark one
- Midnitte, on 10/12/2008, -0/+0Same here, totally just set the dark one to my Vista's background. :x
- Phoenixheart, on 10/11/2008, -3/+7No!!! Leave the best for last!!!
- simpleboy, on 10/11/2008, -3/+25http://www.quicktweaks.com/2008/10/05/the-wallpape ... has already covered the probable wallpapers that could make their ways to Ubuntu 8.10 final
- Vadi0, on 10/11/2008, -2/+18yes yes yes the dots are gone
- Tenoq, on 10/12/2008, -0/+5More DOTS.
- fatas, on 10/12/2008, -5/+21So this was the big major "Theme Upgrade" they were working on
- huff51, on 10/12/2008, -2/+8i believe it is called a wallpaper
- mynameistux, on 10/12/2008, -3/+18he probably comes from a windows family, where the only theme related thing that has more than 3 options, IS the wallpaper.
- AntzNZ, on 10/12/2008, -8/+3Really, you didn't know you could install a lot of visual styles with windows?
- mynameistux, on 10/12/2008, -2/+7nope, well, I assumed you could if you ***** around with the registery, and installed a bunch of extra programs.
- TeacherOfHeroes, on 10/12/2008, -1/+6You can install a lot of visual styles in windows, but you have to replace uxtheme.dll with a cracked version that doesn't mandate that all themes be digitally signed by microsoft. This is why you have to use something that either
* performs an in-memory patch every time the dll is loaded (styleXP, i think windowblinds does this now, too)
* replaces the dll directly (UXTheme Multi-Patcher - windows will make a fuss about it being replaced with an unclean, heathen version, but you can ignore it)
Either way, its a lot more work than just going to the appearances dialogue and clicking on a new theme...
- AaronMT, on 10/12/2008, -2/+11Hoping for a surprise of the new theme revealed on day of release.
- Culyt, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1Unlikely, that isn't the way opensource works. Otherwise they risk a theme that crashes on specific hardware and stuff (the current intrepid theme already glitches on me and its only a slight mod of human).
I think we will see a kick ass theme next release, along with a whole load of new features from things such as the next xorg.

- LostOverThere, on 10/12/2008, -2/+25*Slaps Forehead*
Does anyone think this article just plain sucks? I mean really, the author didn't even seem to know the original dark theme was for testing and he acted like canonical hiring designers a rumour. It's been announced on Kwwii's (Canonical Employee) and Mark's blog for god sake. - morphir, on 10/12/2008, -5/+81digging a wallpaper? Come on!!
- daddymcguire, on 10/12/2008, -1/+60It has Ubuntu in the title
- lordtyros, on 10/12/2008, -2/+14What? The guy in the fifteen hundred dollar suit is going to digg responsibly? Come on!!
- astrobela, on 10/12/2008, -0/+24Better than Palin stories.
- 1longtime, on 10/12/2008, -3/+3I think there's an operating system under there somewhere, but I can't tell from this article.
- skyshock1, on 10/12/2008, -3/+2It's better than artichokes w/ Basil and Lemon.
/facepalm
- rileyhallwood, on 10/12/2008, -12/+10surprised to see this isn't an Onion article.
- cloak419, on 10/12/2008, -15/+23***** smeared on a wall?
- DeuceDiggalow, on 10/12/2008, -4/+5lol!
- nicenerd, on 10/12/2008, -1/+1Indeed it is.
- vandersarJr, on 10/12/2008, -2/+7Looks like a movie poster for the sequel to se7en.
- mynameistux, on 10/12/2008, -0/+5ei8ht?
- grav3k33p3r, on 10/12/2008, -1/+14I actually liked the last wallpaper. At first glance, I thought it was a bird and I looked ibex on wikipedia, and it is apparently a goat.
- Wackoman, on 10/12/2008, -0/+7i think it should have been called Insolent Iguana myself.
- RubberBinder, on 10/12/2008, -0/+7I prefer Illegal Immigrant.
- pHreaksYcle, on 10/12/2008, -1/+2That is an animal.

- pogoyoyo, on 10/12/2008, -13/+15Oh god..
brown again?- mynameistux, on 10/12/2008, -2/+9jesus, just change it, brown is a great colour, if not missused, where you think *****, I think coffee.
- Lewie, on 10/12/2008, -1/+9Or trees/wood. Soil/earth. Animal fur. There's lots of brown in nature.
- evanct, on 10/12/2008, -0/+5that's exactly the point. brown is a nature color. computer software is about as far-removed from nature as you can get.
- Lewie, on 10/12/2008, -0/+5You've got a point there. But people do love their nature wallpapers. And Ubuntu seems pretty dedicated to its theme. To each his own I guess.

LINUX? - dhughes, on 10/12/2008, -1/+8@pogoyogo People are born everyday, it takes time to grow up and learn about things.
- mynameistux, on 10/12/2008, -2/+7no reason to flame, and its a kernel, not an OS
- rudeboyskunk, on 10/12/2008, -2/+14absolutely nothing

- ethana2, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2If Ubuntu can look really good this time around, Dell's offerings will start hijacking some serious Apple market share.
- brettalton, on 10/12/2008, -0/+4What is Ubuntu?
Ubuntu is an operating system like Windows or Mac OS X. It is free for download and comes with programs such as OpenOffice.org and Mozilla Firefox. It comes out with major releases every six months, is virus and spyware free and is completely customizable.
The core of Ubuntu, Linux, is programmed by companies such as IBM, Intel, Google, Hewlett-Packard, Oracle, Red Hat and Novell; not-for-profit organizations such as the Linux Foundation; and individuals like you and me. Although all these companies program Linux, none of them actually own it, meaning it can be used by anyone, for free, for almost any purpose.
Software created for Linux is programmed by companies such as Sun Microsystems (OpenOffice.org, Java) and Mozilla (Firefox, Thunderbird) and not-for-profit organizations - such as the Free Software Foundation, GNOME, KDE - that program software such as Pidgin, GIMP, Rhythmbox, Amarok, Inkscape, Scirbus, GnuCash, etc.
You can download Ubuntu, for free, from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
- pogoyoyo, on 10/12/2008, -13/+4its an operating system n00b
- helloothere, on 10/12/2008, -10/+5It's so ugly! It looks nothing like a goat, and it's way too intense for a regular user. I really hope this doesn't make it to the final release.
- demonred, on 10/12/2008, -0/+15Yeah, it really is too intense for the average Linux user. A majority of them have no idea what art is and would rather look at some glowy 3D thing than something that has some artistic merit. Excuse me for being cynical, but comments like these are really starting to piss me off. You have no idea what graphic design is, and apparently, you don't even know what a goat looks like. Congrats.
- chewbie, on 10/12/2008, -1/+2stop calling it art! Just because the brown + grunge look is the new "it" doesn't mean that everyone should adopt and like it. I prefer wallpapers that are a lot simpler myself, not overcrowded, distracting, stains of slob
- revslaughter, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1A...wallpaper is too intense for the regular user?

- Wackoman, on 10/12/2008, -4/+7too bad my 8.10 ***** itself yesterday or I would be able to see it.

- mynameistux, on 10/12/2008, -0/+8works for me.
- Tenoq, on 10/12/2008, -0/+6Don't worry, Vista doesn't do surround sound for me either. (Bring back DirectSound, kthx).
- pHreaksYcle, on 10/12/2008, -1/+3I heard about that mouse and keyboard thing. WTF is that all about, anyone know?
- chewbie, on 10/12/2008, -0/+3no idea. Touchpad works here + when I plug in my wireless mouse I can use that instantly too. Using 8.10 beta
- Wackoman, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2I was using keyboard and mouse for a few weeks prior to them locking up. Appearantly its something to do with compiz.
- pHreaksYcle, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1God, stuff like that makes me sad.
- pogoyoyo, on 10/12/2008, -4/+6i gave up on ubuntu cuz it wouldnt give out 5.1 surround sound...
- rudeboyskunk, on 10/12/2008, -7/+26To be honest, I kinda like it. I liked the default wallpaper for Hardy Heron. This is in the same vein, and I'd like to see more.
Go ahead, digg me down.- mynameistux, on 10/12/2008, -0/+5why, your comment was good.
- TremorX, on 10/12/2008, -1/+19Ubuntu has new wallpaper EVERY DAY if you change it!!!

- Anton2006, on 10/12/2008, -0/+9If I use this wallpaper on my windows PC, is that cheating ?
- mynameistux, on 10/12/2008, -0/+4I would do that, if I had to use windows/
- ethana2, on 10/12/2008, -0/+3Absolutely not. Free advertising.

- cdigioia, on 10/12/2008, -8/+6Well, I hate to bring on a bury-fest, but I'm seemingly in the minority: To me, this looks like a screaming zombie, painted in feces on a dirty bathroom floor.
Whatever, it's just a ***** wallpaper. - kris33, on 10/12/2008, -1/+2What the heck? It looks like he is being tortured or something. Why is he screaming?
- MadOgre, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2Conflict Diamonds.

Maybe I should write up some Digg articles of my own....He look i have Diarrhea and have discovered a NEW COLOR Woooooo Coooool.
Even if the wallpaper was Cool in a major way its still not news, Now if it added some cool new feature sure then it would count as news, but news this aint. - tikibaloni, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2alt one is sick

- BlackJacket, on 10/12/2008, -0/+5This actually IS what I expected when I saw Ubuntu 8.10 and wallpaper in the heading. I think its strange how people get excited over this stuff. I don't know too many people that use the default wallpaper that comes with their operating system anyway.
Its okay, I guess. But its not anything to be excited about and certainly shouldn't be a top story. It might not even make the final cut.. Actually, the community is slipping a bit with stories like this. I'd rather read Mac Fanboys go on about aluminum macbooks.- dannybuntu, on 10/12/2008, -0/+3Well said, I for one like the hardy heron theme so I was expecting the intrepid theme. Why? Because evrything ubuntu just keeps getting better. :)
