No, ATI drivers for Linux SUCK. Buy NVIDIA instead, "the way it was meant to be played" - kolofon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Ubuntu the negro.
- DiGiTaLFX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Shame its not at the same site/has the same look. Must say the old guide was prettier!
- steved3298, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Finally, I've been having to give my friends the old ubuntuguide link, thankfully most things are the same between 5.04 and 5.10 but this is still good news. +digg
- FuManchu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks for the heads-up on the new guide!
- echonovember, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"linux sucks.

---in reality, this is the only piece keeping me from diving in altogether. - burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"call me back when it supports my SD card reader "out of the box""
Seriously? I think if it has any semblance of normality, it should auto-mount... at least under Ubuntu. I know Mine does. IF not, pick up another $20 one. I can almost guarantee it'll work.
"distro X sucks.

Goooo Distro Z"
What an excellent comment. I love it. (not sarcastic) - burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0^^^ "I know Mine does. IF not, ..."

The unofficial guide hasn't gone anywhere and it's still there, at http://ubuntuguide.org/ - iteachgeeks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm diggin' this. I have been looking for a way to stream my mp3s from my linux box and then I noticed this: http://easylinux.info/wiki/Ubuntu#Streaming_Media_Server. Gnump3d is awsome!
- loveandrockets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When I first installed Ubuntu 3 months ago, I was impressed, however it has a ways to go regarding installing new software. I tried to install firefox 1.5 and searched on google. I got many results but only 1 page had correct instructions. (Many had instructions that just didn't work and it was driving me crazy--I would consider myself an intermediate user. I can write simple scripts and execute them.) And I had to find that page through a bunch of other sites. Typical user would have given up. Hopefully this will address the problem.
- cmsj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ubuntuguide is *not* a good resource because it explains almost nothing.
The vast majority of the questions are covered in the official wiki at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ and generally by http://help.ubuntu.com.
And remember, if you get stuck, drop by ubuntuforums.org or #ubuntu on Freenode and ask for help :) - Ssullivan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@loveandrockets
Installing firefox 1.5 on linux couldn't be easier...just unpack the firefox 1.5 tarball and run the file titled "firefox". - macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nice, ubuntuguide.org was quite helpful in the beginning - during the warty days
- bsoric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That'd be right... as soon as I switch distros...
- Anchoret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As much as the cloying conceptual sanctimony of the "Ubuntu" thing repulses me, it's probably the least-awful major Linux distro. Unfortunately, in keeping with the day-late-and-a-dollar-short Linux spirit, this page finally shows up about ninety days before the next release renders it obsolete.
And, yes, the disorganization of the semi-official online support documentation is irritating. - Phobia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great to hear there is an updated version.
- AttroPheed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice. I'm typing this in ubuntu. And I'm not wearing pants.
- jessejoedotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What's wrong with http://ubuntuguide.squarecows.com/doku.php ?
- chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Unfortunately, in keeping with the day-late-and-a-dollar-short Linux spirit..."
Ah yes, Linux, where even though it has a better filesystem, kernel, and other technological advancements above and beyond Windows, all your Windows boxes have the latest and greatest software before Linux does.
It frustrates me sometimes, avoiding doing anything over-the-top to get some new program to run in Linux, unfortunately, whether it be apt or rpm or another - Linux usually lags, and as such, I keep a single Windows box for games, and testing latest software.
I hate doing anything in Linux that is beyond what a moderate user should be expected to do. It is a waste of time. Download, decompress, build, and begin dependency tracing is not something even a particularly savvy computer user should be expected to do in as much as it is often necessary with Linux.
Thus, I don't bother. I keep my Linux boxes updated.... as updated as various sources (again, RPM and Apt) tend to be, and as such - I always eagerly await the features that have hit my Windows box to officially or semi-officially make it over to the various major distro's and popular repos.
"this page finally shows up about ninety days before the next release renders it obsolete.""
Is anyone running Flight to begin writing the guide for Drake, or does it *have* to wait until it goes gold?
Seems to me, if one runs all the pre-releases, and writes the guide as they go along - not much would need changing (and indeed, one could read the changelog for a good idea where to look for things that might need changing or updating). - watuzi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How do I print all this stuff in one step? I can use my printer at work.
- orvs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0*) see "Printable version" in Toolbox [ http://easylinux.info/index.php?title=Ubuntu&printable=yes ]
*) Whats wrong with ubuntuguide at squarecows?
Well the guy hwo maintains it is no where to be found... If anyone has any suggestion it can not be added to the guide. At EasyLinux.info there is someone "to talk to"
*) And ofcourse we must thank Chua for creating the original Ubuntuguide.org, but that has not been updated for a while.
*) easylinux.info is not a good guide because it doesn't explain anything?
Maybe that is the problem with guides today, no one gives just the answer that "just works" - Anchoret, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0) "Unfortunately, in keeping with the day-late-and-a-dollar-short Linux spirit..."

Don't forget stable drivers that only get done after the devices are obsolete!
There's an answer, of course...and only one answer: MONEY. Get Google
to pledge a billion US dollars to get Linux finally up to speed and not only
will you have a real OS worthy of the name, but all those raggedy Linux
programmers will look like this:

Seriously though it's nice to see this updated the old one helped me out a lot when I first made the switch.
